Section Numbering in Header

On a master page, I need the section number and section title to show in a header. I am setting up a template for a multi-section document and making the transition from Word to InDesign templates has been a bit of a leap.
I created a text variable for my Heading 1 style and used it in my header to show the title of the section. For the number, all I could think of was that I needed use a section marker character in the header and had to specify it manually in the Section Marker box in my Numbering & Sections options window.
(1) Is this the only/best way of accomplishing this task?
and while we're talking about the window...
(2) Is entering the Section Prefix manually the only/best way of getting the section number to show in my footer page numbers?

I’m interested in answers to this problem too, and pleased that two of the “top minds” of this forum are on the case...
I’ve had to deal with a similar problem while typesetting Shakespeare plays. Basically, I need a running header on every page that displays the act number and scene number. And it must all go into a single document (rather than an InDesign “book”).
My own “solution” to this problem seems so clunky I hesitate to mention it. I use GREP to add numbers (using invisible character styles) to almost every line. One invisible number is the act number, the other is the scene number. The running header grabs the first occurrences on each page of these two character styles, and displays them at the top of the page -- which is the only place where they are visible.
There simply has to be a better way. Alas, so far I’m unaware of it.
I’ll modestly admit, however, that this method isn’t as bad as it sounds. The invisible numbers add a negligible amount to the size of the document, and it only took about ten minutes to add them to Hamlet, a l-o-n-g play.
But tell me: what is the better way?

  • Question about section numbering in InDesign CS3

How do I use section numbering (1-1, 2-1, etc.) throughout a book document? I have a Current Page Number at bottom center of each Master page and want to include the Chapter Number and a hyphen before the Current Page Number. I want to start numbering over with each chapter. Also, I would like to find out how to use a running header of the Chapter name in the Master Pages. Thank you.

There is a distinction between chapter and section numbers. Also, Book can have a special meaning, so let's see if we can clear up some stuff here, first.
Is this a single document which you are dividing into logical chapters by uing sections in Pages panel Numbering and Section Options, or an InDesign Book, which is a collection of individual documents, each of which might be one of your chapters, and each of which might also contain multiple sections. An individual document can contain many sections, each of which may have a prefix and a section marker, both of which are accessible for use in numbering pages, but an individual document can have only one chapter number.

  • Changing section numbers depending on order

I work on a lot of documents that have numbered sections. These sections are headed by "Section Title: Section Number" on the initial page and "Section Title: Section Description" on subsequent pages of that section. My problem is that frequently the names of the sections change as well as the order that they're in.
I set up custom text variables for the section titles. That seems to work well enough. I can go in and change the variable which changes all instances of it in that section. My bigger problem is that whenever a section get reordered I have to go in and manually update all the section numbers.
Is there a solution to this? Thanks in advance.

Does the section number appear on the document page somewhere, like in a heading? You'd normally pick up smething like that using a Running Head type variable, which can be set to pick up either a paragraph style (so it grabs an entire paragraph) or a character style (limited text). You can apply character style that is nothing but a name, with no acutal attributes, to selected text to make it work in the variable, if you need to.
You also have the choice of first on page or last on page. If there is no text on the page with the style, ID looks backwards through the document until it finds the first instance to use.

  • Book Chapter and Section Numbering

    Hi,
I've been through the tutorials and cannot seem to find a solution to my problem. Maybe I'm missing something simple here. Basically, I'm writing a book and want each chapter in a separate document with contiguous section numbering. e.g.
    Document 1.
    Chapter 1
       Section 1.1
           Section 1.1.1
           Section 1.1.2
                Section 1.1.2.1
       Section 1.2
           Section 1.2.1
           Section 1.2.2
    Document 2.
    Chapter 2
       Section 2.1
           Section 2.1.1
           Section 2.1.2
                Section 2.1.2.1
       Section 2.2
           Section 2.2.1
           Section 2.2.2
If I define the Chapter as a Section heading with a level 1 hierarchy and each sub-section with level 2, 3, 4, etc hierarchy, the above works fine within each document, but section numbering always stays at 1 in each document and doesn't increment when I make the book i.e all chapters remain at Chapter 1 within each document.
If I use the Chapter text variable, chapter numbering updates, but the section numbering isn't linked to the chapter number e.g. Section 2.1 in document 2 now becomes Section 0.1, since there is now no level 1 Section heading defined.
    Please help,
    Thanks.

    Hello Eugene,
Thank you for the response. I actually ended up defining the Chapter as a level 1 section in Bullets and Numbering, but made it a new list called Section which is continuous across documents in the book.
This works great. Everytime a new chapter is added, numbering needs to be updated in the book panel.

  • Chapter-section numbering

Hi - having strange issue with Chapter and section numbering (not page numbers). For example, Chapeter 1, then a 1 -1, 1 - 2,etc. Working in CS5 on Win7 platform.
In the Bullets and Numbering section of the style sheet for Chapter Head:
    List type: Numbers
    List: [Default] Level: 1
    Numbering style: Format - 1,2,3,4,
    Number: Chapter ^#:^t
    Character Style: None
Mode: Start At: Continue From Previous Numbers
    for the Section Sub-head:
    List type: Numbers
    List: [Default] Level: 2
    Numbering style: Format - 1,2,3,4,
    Number: Chapter ^H - ^#:^t
    Character Style: None
Mode: Start At: Continue From Previouse Numbers
Restart Numbers at This Level is checked.
For some reason, the Cpater numbering jumped over Chapt 5 to 6. I rechecked the doc several times, no chapter 5 being applied anywhere. Then my Sections got messed up....and now Chapter 1 shows Sections 6 -1, 6 -2, etc.
I know I could convert these to text, but what a pain.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

I may have answered this myself:
The subhead section should have used a number code thusly: ^1 - ^#.^t , where the ^1
indicates the sirst level (Chapter Head).
    Wow - a little confusing....

  • Chapter/Section Numbers with extra "."

    All,
First, thanks in advance for any help. I have an issue in which all my Chapter and section numbers have an extra "." placed after the last number. Therefore instead of looking like this:
    1           Chapter Tiile
    1.1        Primary Heading
    1.2        Different Primary Heading
    1.2.1     Tertiary Heading
    it looks like this:
    1.           Chapter Tiile
    1.1.        Primary Heading
    1.2.        Different Primary Heading
    1.2.1.     Tertiary Heading
Does anyone know what is going on here?
    Best,
    Mark

    Hi everyone,
Actually, I just figured out what the issue was.  Essentially in the Bullets and Numbering options of the Paragraph Style we had entered the following in the 'Number' Field of the Number Style options:
    " ^1.^2.^t "
    rather than:
    " ^1.^2^t "
Once I got rid of the red dot shown in the first example, everything was fine. Thanks!

  • Section numbers awry

CS3, ID5.  Document has two chapters.  When I added second chapter to doc, I created new section.  In Pages panel, there's a black triangle visible over page 1 of the whole doc (i.e., at start of chap 1), and also on the page that starts chap 2.
Problem is that the RH, which contains Chapter number, has chapter 1 for all pages.  I had expected it to pick up the number 2 for the chapter number in the second section.
In the Pages panel, when I hover over the first triangle, the message says "Start of 1"  but when I hover over the second, it says "Start of Sect 1."  So clearly something is different.  But I'm not seeing what:  what's causing the difference in section information, and why are all my pages in both sections flagged as chapter 1?
When I double click on the first triangle, hoping to edit it, here's what I see.  What's my mistake?

Chapter numbers are different from Section numbers. A single document can have only one chapter number, but multiple doc can all have the same chapter number if you like (so that you can break up a long chapter in a book into logical sections for editing).
You should either use a section marker or prefix, or create a running head variable keyed to a paragraph style applied to the chapter number heading on the page.

  • Add section title to header/footer? Using Pages 5.2 (or later)

I couldn't find a way to automatically have the title of the current section in the header or footer of a document.
Potentially I am missing something, I haven't tried to do this before, but it seems like a basic function of having a TOC in the first place.

Add an image to any page in the section, then drag it where you want it to appear on each page.
Reduce the opacity using the slider in the Style pane of the Format inspector to change the object’s transparency.
Choose Arrange > Section Masters > Move Object to Section Master (from the Arrange menu at the top of your computer screen).

Easiest way with Acrobat pro, is save the Word document, then convert the document to PDF with Acrobat, rather than doing a "save as" in Word itself to PDF.
Do you have Acrobat full version or Pro?

  • Table of Contents and Section Numbering ??s

Hi, we are using CS6 and have a couple questions about trying to use automated section numbering and table of contents in a single document. We don’t do this often (actually, never used auto-TOC before), so I just want to see if I’m missing something obvious.
SECTION NUMBERING WITH SECTION INTRO PAGES
Our document (a style guide) is divided into sections. Each section begins with a section intro title page, which is basically just a blank page with the new section’s title nicely styled. We are setting up our sections as 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. And we would REALLY prefer for the page numbering to be ’1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.’, where X.0 is the section intro page.
    1) I can add the sections OK with a prefix of 1., 2., etc. But InDesign does not allow me to start the section numbering at ’0′, it must be ’1′. So my intro pages HAVE to be 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, etc. instead of 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 etc. Any creative workaround to solve this??? We really don’t want the intro pages to be X.1, as they have no content and we want the X.1 page to be the first with content on it, NOT X.2. How do people generally handle a section intro page?
    AUTO PAGE NUMBERS AND TOC
We are trying to use the automated Table of Content feature and running into an odd issue. We have page titles on top of each page in a unique paragraph style (H1). We are adding the page number at the beginning of this paragraph using ‘Type > Marker > Current Page Number’ and a unique character style. It’s working fine on the pages, showing the appropriate section numbering we setup for the document (e.g., 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, etc.).
But when we make the table of contents, the ‘page numbers’ at the beginning of the titles are coming in as absolute numbers (e.g., 7, 8 , 9, 10, 11, etc.) instead of our section numbering. I checked the General Preferences, and it is set to ‘View: Section Numbering’. And when I exported an interactive PDF, the bookmarks also add the absolute page number at the beginning of the titles as in the TOC. But if I set the TOC to include page numbers automatically, those DO display correct section numbers (they just precede or follow our titles with the incorrect numbering).
    2) Any ideas why the TOC and PDF Bookmarks would be picking up absolute numbering while the actual titles on the pages show the proper section numbering?
    THANKS!

    Peter Spier wrote:
I've never tried adding a second marker to a paragraph like that. Why not use a numbered list instead?
Just checking in here. Not sure I understand what you mean about using a numbered list. Do you mean instead of the page numbers in the titles, or instead of the Table of Contents? Not sure how either could be automated to stay in sync with adding/removing pages and creating the TOC links and bookmarks in our PDFs.
    - Is there a bug when the TOC pulls the specified title paragraphs and they have page numbers in them?
Thanks. Still trying to see if we're doing something wrong as this is the first we've played with TOC.

  • Section numbers inserted in TOC of epub output

I imported a word document into pages so I could convert to an ePub.  All was going well, and then I did another test export as ePub.  When I looked at the book on my iPad, I noticed that Section Numbers were now being inserted into the automatically generated table of contents as follows:
    Section 1
         Chapter title
    Section 2
         Chapter title
This was not happening earlier and I can't figure out what I did that might have triggered it.
What is causing this and how do I get rid of it?  Help!
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I followed your advice, and looked at a sample project - Employee Care. When I generated ePub output using this project, the output included a table of contents. However, when I specified a TOC in my project (see below), I still get the same message that the TOC file is missing. The project name doesn't contain any special characters.

  • Automatic Section Numbering

Hello, just after some help with automatic section numbering in IDCS5.
What I have is a (currently) 50 page document split into about 15 sections. I would like to number the sections and pages so that they appear on each page  1.1, 1.2 1.3 etc
I've experimented with all the page numbering options but none seem to automatically update the 'section' number, I can only manually add a prefix.
The problem I have is this document will be a continually evolving thing and later on I may need to add a new section between say section 2 and 3. Is it possible to have all the following sections renumber accordingly, so 3.1 automatically becomes 4.1 and so on.
    Thanks.

In the frame where you are putting the page number marker also add the Section Marker character. It's in the same list of markers under special characters as the page number markers.

  • FM 10 Index section numbering issue

I have created an index and everything is perfect except how the section numbers have been generated. The number 10 is generating before 1-9. (Please note the reason 10 generates before 1-9 is because within the Reference page, I have switched the tags to read as follows: <$numerics><$alphabetics><$symbols>). I have also tried the <$paranumonly> tag, and that did not help. However, If <$numerics> is after <$alphabetics> and before <$symbols>, the section numbers will generate: 1, 10, 2-9.
    Here are a few examples:
    Massachusetts
    6.4.10 441
    6.4.11 442
    6.4.12 443
    6.4.13 445
    6.4.14 445
    6.4.15 446
    6.4.8 439
    6.4.9 439
    - showing that 6.4.8 and 6.4.9 should go before 6.4.10
    federal law
    10.5.5 625
    10.5.6 627
    10.5.7 628
    10.5.8 632
    1.2.11 37
    - 1.2.11 should go before 10.5.5
I have researched this for a couple days and cannot find an answer. Please help me.
    Thank you!

Emalie – I think there are some basics you haven’t got the hang of:
Square brackets in entries are optional; if they don’t exist, it’s the ordinary, non-bracketed text, that is indexed.
if you do add square brackets to the index entry, the entry is considered in two parts.
The text outside the brackets is what is printed in the index, i.e. what the reader will see.
The text in the brackets is the sort order and does not appear in the visible entry.
It’s useful if you want to index St as Saint, for example: St Paul’s Cathedral[Saint Paul] would be indexed before Stepford; or to list names in firstname-surname order, but alphabetise them by surname, such as Tony Blair[Blair T], George W. Bush[Bush G], which would make an index in which Bush follows Blair, despite the fact that George would come before Tony.
Note that you don’t need to put the whole entry inside the brackets, just enough to make sure it sorts as you wish. The content is never seen by the reader.
Now that I see more of your index, I’m prompted to ask a more fundamental question. It’s there to guide the reader, and would normally contain terms that the reader is going to look up. Are entries such as 6.4.13.445 meaningful to someone consulting your index? Forgive the interference, but do they need to be indexed at all?

  • Table section with 3 header rows pagination issue

    Hi experts.
I have a table section pagination issue. In my case the table section combines 3 header rows.
Down bellow the series of screenshots I hope they describe my example well (click on screenshots to enlarge).
    1) The data context
    2) Layout elements
Here is my issue (table header output at the end of the page but there is no data row):
As you can see on the first page there is no more place for a data row but the header still exists.
if I set keep with next flag on the pagination tab for all header rows the result will be:
Is it possible somehow to fix it?
I would like to have the header row output on the page only if a data row exists bellow the header, the footer should only output if a data row exists above.

The solutions is easy. You´d better create the corresponding DDIC objects hierarchy in the backend and then use the form to PRINT the prepared data ONLY. I mean:
    In your backend:
in a row there is a dataset (table) and a optional dataset (table) == DDIC structure with two "fields" of type "table" = row A
use this "row" to create the "outer" table == DDIC table type with row A
Then you can just drag and drop this structure in your adobe form and will have do difficult with formatting.
