SECURE BACKUP DATABASE
Hi,
We have our DB 10g R2 on Linux redhat named DBP. In order to be safe and do not lose data and be always available we envision following scenario and we ask your opinion please. Many thanks.
1-Create another DBP on another Linux machine.
2-Have a shared file system for the two linux machines.
3-Full RMAN Hot Backup of the original DBP Two times a day. The backup files would be storaged on the shared file system.
4-in case of crash we will restore DBP on seconde linux machine.
What are the advantages and disadvantages ?
Many thanks before.
Hi dear,
There can be multiple options for u, according to ur conveniance like
1) U can take cold backup every week and take only backup of archive file on daily basis till the backup date.......But if u can only recover ur database till the point u have the archive logs.
2) U can have incremental backup policy through which u can have hot as well as cold backup's .........But the problem is same like in step no 1.
3) U can create a dataguard(Standby Database) on your test server......This will be safest and foremost a best idea i feel because u will loss a very little dataonly which is present in ur log files but whole of ur database will be saved...

Oracle Secure Backup Cloud Module for Amazon S3 -
Hi,
I am currently implementing Oracle Secure Backup. My environment is this:
OS: Windows Server 2003 (32Bit) for all servers
Database: Oracle Database 11.2.0.1.0
Tape Library: IBM-ULT 3580-TD4
I will have to configure 2 machines to work with OSB: server01 and server02.
Server01:
This serves as the client, admin, mediaserver
Server02:
This will serve as the client, admin
When I log in to Server01, in the device manager, I can see the Tape Drives (no warnings, no questions marks) so I think it's good.
When I log in to Server02, in the device manager, there are no Tape Drives seen. Is is ok or shall i configure the IBM Tape drives to be also accessible since this is just the client, admin host?
Also I have noticed that when I installed the OSB in Server02 (client, admin), when I am on the SCSI Devices, i dont see any tape device (since its not in the device manager). Because of this i cannot start OSB Services and cannot add this host to the mediaserver.
Also, I am having issues Configuring the Library and the devices. I have read the official documentation completely but i think its very general and it does not present the detailed step-by-step process in installing and configuring OSB.
When I issued: lsdev -lvg in the mediaserver , I can read an error: Warning: bus info unknown or drive not installed.
Help is very much appreciated. Thanks a lot guys!I have resolved the issue. Ill close this thread. :))

Error while starting Oracle Secure Backup Service on Windows
Hi,
I've installed an Oracle 10gR2 database, and an OSB on a Windows XP (SP2) machine, and when trying to start the service (Oracle Secure Backup Services) I got the following error :
"Unknown():Unable to load dynamic library'./php_osb.dll'-The operating system cannot run %1"
This error message pops up 2-3 times, and I cannot login to OSB web page.
My database works ok, but I cannot "test" OSB
Anyone else had the same problem? Any ideas ?
Thanks,
PanagiotisHi-- could you please describe your administrative domain?
I need to know the operating systems on each of the
clients and the OSB admin server. Also, does 'obtool' CLI
tool work? Do any of the machines act as an apache webserver
for another application? Is there any other backup service
running on any of the machines?
thanks,
Judy
I noticed that when re-installing the OSB without the
Administrative Server (only Media Server and Client)
I got no errors at all (but still cannot connect from
another Administratice Server to my machine) -

Oracle Secure Backup- Error during configuration on Linux server
Dear Gurus
We are trying to configure Oracle Secure backup with the Oracle StorageTek tape library, on the Oracle Linux server for testing purposes..
We are getting the following errors when we run the command to configure "discoverdev -ic -h orasecbak":
Checking each library to associate discovered drive(s) with DTE...
Assigning DTE 1 in library ora-sec-bk_lib_2 for drive ora-sec-bk_tape_1 with serial number: HUJ4411YD9

Assigning DTE 1 in library ora-sec-bk_lib_1 for drive ora-sec-bk_tape_2 with serial number: HUJ4411YD9
Error: dte2 didn't report serial number to ora-sec-bk_lib_1 library
The tape library is connected to the server using two fiber connections..thats why the sg_map -i -x is giving output twice for the same serial number...
.we installed Oracle Secure Backup 12.1
Regards,
MisbahWhat about disk space on your database server, is that OK? How about free RAM on all the systems?
You can also check other kernel settings to see if you are running out of kernel message buffer space or shared memory.

Edited by: Muhammad.Usman on Dec 22, 2009 8:51 PMThe configuration you have described is not supported. If you want to use a VTL you will need to purchase one from a supported VTL supplier.
OSB does not provide its own VTL.

RMAN to Disk (shared mounted file system) then secure backup to Tape
Hi
This is a little away from the norm and I am new to Oracle secure Backup.
We have several databases on physically separate servers, all backup to a central disk (a ZFS shared file-system).
We have a media server also with the same mounted file-system so it can see all of the RMAN backups there.
Secure backup is installed on the media server and is configured as such.
The question I have is I need to backup the file system to tape where all the RMAN backups live, I have configured the data set but I get file permission errors for each of the RMAN backup files in the directory.
I have tried to change these permissions but to no avail (assuming it is just a read write access change that is needed - but this may be a problem in the long run). What is the general process for backup of already created RMAN backups sat in a shared area? I know its not the norm to do to disk then to tape backups but can this be done? I would have installed Secure backup client on each server and managed the whole backup through secure backup but this is not possible I must do the to tape from the file system, any advise and guidance on this would be much appreciated.
Kind regards
Vicky
Edited by: user10090654 on Oct 4, 2011 4:50 AMYou can easily accomplish a very streamlined D2D2T strategy! RMAN backup to disk...then backup that disk to tape via RMAN and OSB. Upon restore, RMAN will restore from best media disk or tape based on where files are located.

Checkpoints in Oracle Secure backup....
hi!
My question is that does Oracle Secure backup has "checkpoint " option...???.
Basically when we are backing very large databases so any error could accoured so we should define "checkpoint" so in case of some network or any other error , we can restart that backup from last checkpoint.
Please .....reply .....The following policies exists under operations
obtool lsp operations .....
fullbackupcheckpointfrequency 8 GB [default]
incrbackupcheckpointfrequency 2 GB [default]
I'm not clear if this is just for Filesystem backups though, or if it works for RMAN too.

Error on backup database is closed
please! help me
I have an error when I do a backup from EM
I use oracle 11g is installed on Solaris 10, if I come in remotely and directly use RMAN / target with these commands
backup device type disk tag '% TAG' database;
backup device type disk tag '% TAG' archivelog all not backed up delete all input;
does my backup, but with EM (generates the scrip with the same commands) gives the following error
"Unable to perform the backup because the database is closed."
the db is open and i try to change credentials and nothing
tnx! This is not an Oracle Secure Backup specific query. You'll get more assistance by posting this in the correct EM/RMAN forum.
Thanks

junYou can work entirely in Xcode by using the command-line tool template in C. Xcode > File > New > Project > Command-Line Tool > Next > Language: C > Next > Create.
If you do want to work on the command line, you may as well just use the "clang" program instead. The "gcc" tool is just a compatibility tool for existing scripts that are expecting the actual "gcc" program. Apple hasn't used the real "gcc" for years. (Read up on the GPLv3 for more information.)
The gcc/clang arguments are the same. The "-c" flag instructs the compiler to only compile a single .c file into a .o object file. It won't create an executable. If you are only compiling a single source file, just omit the "-c" flag and the compiler will create an executable named "a.out" that you can run by typing "./a.out". You can specify "-o <executable name>" if you want to specify a name. Once you get more than a handful of source files, using the terminal starts to become a hassle. At that point, you definitely want to start using Xcode.
I'm not sure why you would try to compile "helloworlddot1.c" and then get an error message about "filename.c". Something else is wrong.
If you are working in the Terminal, it is easiest to use the "cd" command to move into the same directory as your source files. Then you don't have to keep typing the full path.
It is hard to say what the "best" community is. There are many to choose from. -
Hi Experts,
We need a solution to backup 200+ Oracle server to a network drive (or multiple network drives as the case may be)
I have been tasked with finding a solution, so far Secure Backup seems to be the ideal product, but I have a few questions.
1. We require the backup to happen to a network disk, not a tape drive, I understand that we can use Virtual Tape Libraries to emulate a tape drive, are there any limitation to this and what VTL would you suggest?
2. Can we do incremental backups? If so is there a differential process that must run before the backup can occur? Some of the databases we need to backup are larger than 1 TB.
4. I'm struggling to get a quote out of Oracle, how much in USD can we expect to pay per server? a rough Ideas would help me make a decision about whether the project is viable or not.
Thanks very much for you help.
Regards,
Gregory AlexanderOracle Secure Backup is licensing per physical tape drive. This is a single component licensing model which is very different that most other products which price per server, advanced feature etc.
As noted earlier in the thread, you can utilize a VTL to obtain disk like performance for file system and the Oracle database. You could also utilize the Flash Recovery Area as a unified disk backup location for the Oracle database using RMAN and then OSB can backup the Flash Recovery Area to tape. -

Oracle Secure Backup datasets Rman backup
Hi all,
I want use the scheduler on OSB, to launch a shell script to backup a database by rman.
I made a test, and the backup executed well. I created a dataset, like that:
include host hostn01
include path /u01/app/oracle/dummy
after backup "/u01/app/oracle/admin/scripts/rman/full_db.sh"
Script full_db.sh as:
su - oracle -c "/u01/app/oracle/admin/scripts/rman/level0_db_tape.sh"
The script above invoke the rman backup full, and finish without any errors.
My question. It is possible to have a dataset without the include path for a dummy dir? like that or similar?
include host hostn01
"/u01/app/oracle/admin/scripts/rman/full_db.sh"
The OSB version is 10.4.3
Cumps,Hi
You can use RMAN for Backup and Restore using Oracle Secure Backup. But the following has to met before the implementation.
1. RMAN must connect through pre-authorised user
2. pre-authorised OSB user's OSB class must have database backup and restore rights
3. OSB user permissions must match those of Oracle Instance.
Please check all the above....
Thanks

is it possible to start secure Backup to tape from a script
with RMAN commands ?? Or only possible with
