Secure Backup Questions

Hi Experts,
We need a solution to backup 200+ Oracle server to a network drive (or multiple network drives as the case may be)
I have been tasked with finding a solution, so far Secure Backup seems to be the ideal product, but I have a few questions.
1. We require the backup to happen to a network disk, not a tape drive, I understand that we can use Virtual Tape Libraries to emulate a tape drive, are there any limitation to this and what VTL would you suggest?
2. Can we do incremental backups? If so is there a differential process that must run before the backup can occur? Some of the databases we need to backup are larger than 1 TB.
4. I'm struggling to get a quote out of Oracle, how much in USD can we expect to pay per server? a rough Ideas would help me make a decision about whether the project is viable or not.
Thanks very much for you help.
Regards,
Gregory Alexander

Oracle Secure Backup is licensing per physical tape drive. This is a single component licensing model which is very different that most other products which price per server, advanced feature etc.
As noted earlier in the thread, you can utilize a VTL to obtain disk like performance for file system and the Oracle database. You could also utilize the Flash Recovery Area as a unified disk backup location for the Oracle database using RMAN and then OSB can backup the Flash Recovery Area to tape.

  • Oracle Secure Backup 10.3.0.3.0 in Windows 2003 with IBM Tape Not Working

    Hi,
I am currently implementing Oracle Secure Backup. My environment is this:
OS: Windows Server 2003 (32Bit) for all servers
    Database: Oracle Database 11.2.0.1.0
    Tape Library: IBM-ULT 3580-TD4
I will have to configure 2 machines to work with OSB: server01 and server02.
    Server01:
This serves as the client, admin, mediaserver
    Server02:
This will serve as the client, admin
When I log in to Server01, in the device manager, I can see the Tape Drives (no warnings, no questions marks) so I think it's good.
When I log in to Server02, in the device manager, there are no Tape Drives seen. Is is ok or shall i configure the IBM Tape drives to be also accessible since this is just the client, admin host?
Also I have noticed that when I installed the OSB in Server02 (client, admin), when I am on the SCSI Devices, i dont see any tape device (since its not in the device manager). Because of this i cannot start OSB Services and cannot add this host to the mediaserver.
Also, I am having issues Configuring the Library and the devices. I have read the official documentation completely but i think its very general and it does not present the detailed step-by-step process in installing and configuring OSB.
When I issued: lsdev -lvg in the mediaserver , I can read an error: Warning: bus info unknown or drive not installed.
Help is very much appreciated. Thanks a lot guys!

I have resolved the issue. Ill close this thread. :))

  • RMAN to Disk (shared mounted file system) then secure backup to Tape

    Hi
This is a little away from the norm and I am new to Oracle secure Backup.
We have several databases on physically separate servers, all backup to a central disk (a ZFS shared file-system).
We have a media server also with the same mounted file-system so it can see all of the RMAN backups there.
Secure backup is installed on the media server and is configured as such.
The question I have is I need to backup the file system to tape where all the RMAN backups live, I have configured the data set but I get file permission errors for each of the RMAN backup files in the directory.
I have tried to change these permissions but to no avail (assuming it is just a read write access change that is needed - but this may be a problem in the long run). What is the general process for backup of already created RMAN backups sat in a shared area? I know its not the norm to do to disk then to tape backups but can this be done? I would have installed Secure backup client on each server and managed the whole backup through secure backup but this is not possible I must do the to tape from the file system, any advise and guidance on this would be much appreciated.
    Kind regards
    Vicky

You can easily accomplish a very streamlined D2D2T strategy! RMAN backup to disk...then backup that disk to tape via RMAN and OSB. Upon restore, RMAN will restore from best media disk or tape based on where files are located.

  • Checkpoints in Oracle Secure backup....

    hi!
My question is that does Oracle Secure backup has "checkpoint " option...???.
Basically when we are backing very large databases so any error could accoured so we should define "checkpoint" so in case of some network or any other error , we can restart that backup from last checkpoint.
    Please .....reply .....

The following policies exists under operations
    obtool lsp operations .....
    fullbackupcheckpointfrequency 8 GB [default]
    incrbackupcheckpointfrequency 2 GB [default]
I'm not clear if this is just for Filesystem backups though, or if it works for RMAN too.

  • Oracle Secure Backup datasets Rman backup

    Hi all,
I want use the scheduler on OSB, to  launch a shell script to backup a database by rman.
I made a test, and the backup executed well. I created a dataset, like that:
    include host hostn01
    include path /u01/app/oracle/dummy
    after backup "/u01/app/oracle/admin/scripts/rman/full_db.sh"
    Script full_db.sh as:
    su - oracle -c "/u01/app/oracle/admin/scripts/rman/level0_db_tape.sh"
The script above invoke the rman backup full, and finish without any errors.
My question. It is possible to have a dataset without the include path for a dummy dir? like that or similar?
    include host hostn01
    "/u01/app/oracle/admin/scripts/rman/full_db.sh"
    The OSB version is 10.4.3
    Cumps,

    Hi
You can use RMAN for Backup and Restore using Oracle Secure Backup. But the following has to met before the implementation.
    1. RMAN must connect through pre-authorised user
    2. pre-authorised OSB user's OSB class must have database backup and restore rights
    3. OSB user permissions must match those of Oracle Instance.
    Please check all the above....
    Thanks

  • Is SECURE BACKUP a good alternative to Veritas Netbackup ?

    Folks,
With Oracle becoming more and more "one place - get all" company, i guess for support perspective, it will good to use or atleast start evaluating different Oracle products that are used with RDBMS
Got a question, Is Secure Backup product having all the capabilities and can it be a viable alternative to veritas netbackup ? I got the documentation and presentations. But it will be pleasing to know if somebody has already switched to secure backup from netbackup utility.

    Hi,
Our application is entirely Oracle-based, so OSB was a good fit. The solution originally had NBU as the backup technology but was very expensive (I spent several days fighting off the Symantec account manager), even after generous discounts.
My experience of Oracle RMAN interfacing with NBU was patchy, but with OSB it "worked first time" - much more seamless. After some initial device configuration issues, we are now up and running in development, and I'm looking at rolling OSB out across 80 Solaris servers, including OAS and RAC servers.
    Cheers.

  • Secure backup restore

    Hi Experts,
I have a question related to oracle secure backup restore.
Is that possible to restore only the incremental backup?
My full backup is on Sunday, all other days am taking incr backup. I want to restore my data back on Wednesday. For the same, do i need to restore Full backup and incr on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday ?
Or is there is any other option to recover a file which is available in Wednesday incremental backup?
    Thanks and Regards
    Jay

If the file was changed on the Wednesday then it would be included in the Wednesday incremental job, so if you were viewing "latest" and chose the file it would just restore that from the Wednesday backup job. It would only go back to the Full backup if the file hadn't changed so wasn't included in the incr.
You can tell the view to be "as of date" and set it to "exclusive" so you'll only see the files included in that incr job.
    Thanks

  • Licensing for Oracle Secure Backup Cloud Module

My company is looking at moving from our internal tape backup to Oracle (Cloud) Database Backup.  We have questions about costs for licensing the Oracle Secure Backup Cloud Module.  We have been using Oracle Secure Backup Express Edition and would like to know if there are additional API/License costs for using Oracle Secure Backup Cloud Module in additional to the $33/TB per month cost listed on the Oracle Cloud Database Backup page at https://cloud.oracle.com/database_backup?tabID=1394421701419.
We have spoken with 6 different sales and technical reps at Oracle and at Oracle Cloud and none have been able to provide a clear answer for this question.  We have been directed to this forum, by the staff at Oracle Cloud.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know about this tape not appearing to the OS, some other OS related documentation would help you there. This may be due to the fact that this is a removable disk storage device, rather than actual tape.
However I have checked the OSB tape support matrix and this device is not listed, so this is not supported for use with OSB.
    Thanks

  • After having replaced the iMac hard drive I no longer can make iTunes security backups from my iPhone 4S?

After having had my iMac's hard drive replaced (had a defect 1 TB Seagate) and the 10.8.2 reinstalled, I no longer can make security backups from my iPhone 4S. iTunes simply tells me that the backup cannot be saved on my computer (which it has done numerous times prior the replacement of the hard drive). Any suggestions on how to fix this?

  • Error while starting Oracle Secure Backup Service on Windows

    Hi,
I've installed an Oracle 10gR2 database, and an OSB on a Windows XP (SP2) machine, and when trying to start the service (Oracle Secure Backup Services) I got the following error :
"Unknown():Unable to load dynamic library'./php_osb.dll'-The operating system cannot run %1"
This error message pops up 2-3 times, and I cannot login to OSB web page.
My database works ok, but I cannot "test" OSB
Anyone else had the same problem? Any ideas ?
    Thanks,
    Panagiotis

Hi-- could you please describe your administrative domain?
I need to know the operating systems on each of the
clients and the OSB admin server. Also, does 'obtool' CLI
tool work? Do any of the machines act as an apache webserver
for another application? Is there any other backup service
running on any of the machines?
    thanks,
    Judy
I noticed that when re-installing the OSB without the
Administrative Server (only Media Server and Client)
I got no errors at all (but still cannot connect from
another Administratice Server to my machine)

  • How to install and configure oracle secure backup(osb-10.4.0.3.0_linux.x64) in linux

    Hello,
We are planning to install and configure Oracle Secure Backup Version 10.4 in Linux server. I had searched documents and i have not find any relevant steps to install and configure in OEL 6.2.
Can anyone please suggest me how to install and configure OSB.
    Regards,
    Anil

    Hi
Installing OSB on Oracle Linux is just the same as installing on any other supported linux and is described in Installation and Configuration guide. Just stick with the directories and procedure described in install guide and you should be fine.
For media server choose a physical host due to performance considerations. I think it is mentioned in docs somewhere.

  • Oracle RAC and Oracle Secure Backup Express

I am building a new RAC environment - 7-Nodes on Linux.
We are very interested in reviewing Oracle Secure Backup, possible Oracle Secure Backup Express.
My understanding about Oracle Secur eBackup Express is it is licensed "free" as long as you are working with a single tape drive.
Does anyone know - does this apply to RAC as well?
    Thanks

Please refer to the OSB licensing document for
specific differences between OSB-XE and OSB:
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B32520_01/doc/
    license.101/b25528/toc.htm
In general, we recommend you backup each RAC node to
insure all local files are protected which would mean
the OSB-XE edition would not be recommended since
OSB-XE is backup of one server.Thank you - I will review this.
.. and your White Papers regarding performance were just what I was looking for.
