Secure clean up after editing password file

I would like to create my own password file using a spreadsheet editor (NeoOffice in my case).
My intent is to store the result on writeable CD or DVD (and for convenience possibly a USB flash drive and/or printed hardcopy).
I know that the act of viewing/editing any such digital media creates images of it in memory and possibly on my main drive (in temp files and swap files) ... and perhaps other hardware where scratch copies are stored when applications work on data (or the OS moves data around as part of its normal resource balancing activity) .
I would like to know if it is possible to fully and confidently clean up any lingering copies (or partial copies) of data that an application has used after the application has terminated.
I am not looking for a different overall method for creating and controlling my password database. Specifically, I am not looking for a utility that would allow me to 'securely' store the database on my computer using keychain technology, 3rd party password management apps or similar methods that leave the password database on my computer in a form that controls access.
I prefer the more conservative approach of storing my password database completely offline in non-volatile, unencrypted form ... but nevertheless having the convenience of accessing it electronically when I need it.
So what I'm asking for is general knowledge about how to maintain secure control over data accessed by an application running on Tiger

I don't think you need to worry if it's stored on external media, but if you're worried about temp/cache/swap files, then get Applejack...
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack
Then do steps 3 & 5.

  • Metadata in Bridge CS3 lost after editing NEF file in Capture NX2

Entered keywords and metadata in Bridge CS3, edited NEF file in Capture NX2 and then all metadata in Bridge got lost even if I did not edit any metadata in Capture.
Original Bridge metadata are still saved in XMP file but Bridge does not show them nor can search or sort photos by them.
Is it a Bridge bug or is it connected with any settings?
    Win XP, Bridge CS3 2.1.1.9, Capture NX2 2.2.0, Nikon D300
Will appreciate any help, thanks a lot.

First I renamed photos in Bridge - sidecar XMP files were created with the new filename already, added some keywords and metadata in Bridge. Edited photo in Capture but not changed the name again - the result was the Bridge does not show edited metadata and keywords anymore even all those info are still saved in sidecar XMP file. Capture apparently does not change XPM in any way.
It looks like all the problems are connected with renaming files in Bridge before editing them in Capture as if Bridge cannot read XMP after Capture added its own info in NEF file.

If the files have a permissions password, you need to know it, and remove security, before you can edit the files. That is correct.

  • How to kill secure erase after turning on File Vault?

I turned on file vault on my MacBook with OS 10.6.4 and selected the secure erase option for the resulting empty space. The File Vault encryption process completed fairly quickly, but the secure erase has carried on for 48 hours and I'm just at 26% complete as per the security pane of System Preferences.
I'd like to stop the secure erase process. It seems like overkill, and as this computer (and the hard disk) are 4+ years old, I'm thinking the wear and tear on the drive is more than is necessary.
I've tried killing the secure erase process ("sudo kill -9 ...") but the process re-spawns.
My question: is there a safe way to stop the secure erase process after turning on File Vault? (I am fully backed up with Time Machine if that makes any difference.)

Ah-HA! OK, I've fixed the problem the right way now instead of the ugly method of renaming secure_erase, which was admittedly a hack until I had more time to look at things.
The queue for secure_erase is stored in /var/db/fvsecureerase.jobs/ - you need to cd into that directory and look for the files there, and remove them. By deleting the numbered job, you will remove it from the secure_erase queue.
HOWEVER, please look at the files first and then manually delete the file path listed, otherwise you will leave those to-be-destroyed files UNDELETED. This is probably NOT what you want. What happens is that secure_erase moves the "original" files into a new directory (in my case the file was named /Users/jtodd.10307331336706142097) and then secure_erase does it's magic on that directory and wipes out each file in a tedious, secure way. If you made a mistake and don't want to wait the 20 days for it to finish the tedious method, you can just "rm" it the old fashioned way. I typically pipe "yes" into the "rm -R" command since there are a lot of strange permissions things that rm asks about and I would otherwise spend an hour hitting "y" on every file about which it uncertain - hooray for UNIX pipes! For instance, this is a what I did (again, as root):
    sh-3.2# cd /var/db/fvsecureerase.jobs
    sh-3.2# ls -lsa
    total 8
    0 drwx------ 3 root admin 102 Nov 12 11:44 .
    0 drwxr-xr-x 51 root wheel 1734 Nov 12 11:44 ..
    8 -rw-r--r--@ 1 root admin 33 Nov 10 13:53 501
    sh-3.2# cat 501
    /Users/jtodd.10307331336706142097
    sh-3.2# rm 501
    sh-3.2# yes|rm -R /Users/jtodd.10307331336706142097

  • In Bridge- Edited CR2 Files(JPG/TIF) Are Not Lining Up next to CR2 File

I had this problem once before and the forum got it fixed. I now cannot find that "discussion"
After editing a file in Bridge and saving in Bridge as a TIF or JPG, When it places the file back in Bridge it appears not next to the CR2 file but at the end of the folder. You may notice that all is correct in the images above the outlined problem.
    Thanks!

HELP!! Don't Know why images are blurred. They were sized for web and no bigger than allowed size.

Have received some advice but not the correct fix.
All machines in question work fine with these settings: View>Sort>Ascending Order> Manually
The machine in question worked like this until yesterday. Now it will only sort like this: View>Sort>Ascending Order>By Filename
This was not the fix I received initially on this forum years ago.

  • Adobe pro 8: how to make an existing secure encrptyed form unfillable after editing

    Hello,
    as the discussion topic says.
adobe pro 8: how to make an existing secure encrptyed form unfillable after editing?  Is it even possible to do in adobe pro 8?
For work there's a secure and encrptyed form.  I want to write in the form and save it so it will be unfillable / uneditable.
this form is not created by myself, and already secure and encrypted.
I am aware that in other recent adobe pro versions on how to do this, since they have a " save as a copy" function in the file menu. (adobe 8 doesnt have)
I've also tried printing as a PDF, but due to encryption of the form, that doesn't come out great.
Upgrading to a recent version of adobe pro is not an option.
I've also tried exporting as a picture files and then recombinding them to a pdf.  I dont like this method and find it time consuming.
If possible please inform me of a way to solve this problem , step by step with adobe pro 8's features.
    or
show me the equivalent method to how recent versions "save a copy" of a secure encrypted form on adobe pro 8.
Thanks in advance for reading this thread and helping.

Well after you use save a copy, and the security is disabled, you could then re enable security features and disable editing of the form.
EDIT: I just tested , with a PDF is in secure mode, even using a "save a copy" feature wouldn't work.
Would finding a program to desecure the pdf be a possible option?
Or is there a way to copy the form (with all it's editable fields) and paste it as an unsecure pdf?
You would then be able to make new security features.
thanks for replying and viewing this problem.

  • LR hangs when after editing .tif image try to edit .NEF file

LR CC Trial hang ups after:
    Open LR CC
Edit .tif file created by PS CC trial
Go back to the grid of thumbnails
    Edit (try) a .NEF
I am working with a catalog ex LR 5.4
This is the four time in a row that happens this. Both photos are "normal" files (neither smart preview nor virtual copy).
As a side observation. The CC application starter shows "0 days remaining"!! Which is not possible because LR CC was released few days ago. However, in the LR screen shot above, it says "29 days left..."
I have tried disabling my antivirus software (ESET Smart Security v8) without success.
    Solved!
PS CC hang up and during restarting it told me it was because a Graphic Card error, and it has disabled it. I have disabled the Graphic Card, also in LR, and I am not having problems so far.

    Hi,
Next time you encounter similar problem, please check that that the space bar is not stuck. Also verify that hand tool is active even if any other tool is selected.
Space bar is a shortcut for Hand tool any time with any tool active.
    Hope this solves your problem.
    Thanks,

  • After editing a project, my imported files disappear.

After editing a project, my imported files disappear.  White page with yellow triangle alert.  Instructions say I need to relink my files, but I can't find that option anywhere.  Version 10.0.  Using OS X 10.9.2

Can I share and export from the 10.1.1 Trial?  My son downloaded the original for me under his apple id, I don't know what his password was so I can't upgrade.  He was killed a couple years ago so I don't have anyway to recover it.  But I'm working on a project that I need to get out right away.  Figured I'd try the new version before I buy it.  I clicked to upload to youtube, but can't tell if it's doing anything or not.

  • How to sync two excel files, the content is the same in both files after edit.

I have two excel files, which are data and edit by multi users, how can I sync the master files to the copy files after edit?
Is this operation required VBA? marco?

    Hi,
Your request could be done via VBA code. Here are two ideas.
    One:
Syncing the data from master file to the copy file without opening copy file. Sample code
Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)
    If Target.Count > 1 Then Exit Sub
Dim cnn As Object, SQL$, s$
    Select Case True
    Case Target.Value = ""
    s = "null"
    Case IsDate(Target.Value)
    s = "#" & Target.Value & "#"
    Case IsNumeric(Target.Value)
    s = Target.Value
    Case Else
    s = "'" & Target.Value & "'"
    End Select
    Set cnn = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
    cnn.Open "provider=microsoft.jet.oledb.4.0;extended properties='excel 8.0;hdr=no';data source=" & ThisWorkbook.Path & "\test folder\Book2.xls"
    SQL = "update [Sheet1$" & Target.Address(0, 0) & ":" & Target.Address(0, 0) & "] set f1=" & s
    cnn.Execute (SQL)
    cnn.Close
    Set cnn = Nothing
    End Sub
    Two:
Saving the master file as copy file before closing. Reference:

  • In iphoto, how do i save a photo after editing, in the same or higher file size, it's saves in a lower size

in iphoto, how do i save a photo after editing, in the same or higher file size, it's saves in a lower size

It's rather more complicated that this.
iPhoto is a lossless editor. You don't lose any quality on your shot in iPhoto.
The file size you see reported is the size of your iPhoto Preview: this is what gets used if you access the data via a media browser. It's a "good-enough-for-most-uses" version of the shot. Email it, upload to websites, use it in Presentation, Word processing file etc
If you want to set the quality yourself then Export the photo using the File -> Export command.
You can choose to export to Jpeg, Tiff or png. Tiff is lossless but the file sizes are up to 10 times larger. Jpeg allows you to choose different qualities: High, Medium or low. The difference is the amount of compression involved. High quality means very little compression. It's not unusual for photos exported at this setting to have a larger file size than the original.
Which setting you choose depends on the use you intend. Further editing, printing then high is important. Sending to Facebook? Well low will do just fine there as they're going to trash the file anyway.
But the key point: the file size only becomes an issue when you export.
    Regards
    TD

  • What is the next step after editing or triming a video ? What type of file format to save and what to do after that ?

what is the next step after editing or triming a video?
what type of file format should be save and what to do after that?

In the early days of digital video editing, an export render could take hours!  Not many applications are as hard on system resources as video editing, and rendering the final edit is probably the most system intense action of all.
Head on over to the Premiere Pro Hardware forum to see what sort of computer hardware the pros use for NLE (non linear editing), or to the PPBM5 site for a better look.

  • After moving shared profiles to Windows 7/32 Pro PC, I can't access them from XP box mapped to the profile share (P:\Profiles...) after editing profiles.ini to point to the network share. I can edit files in the profile directory from XP.

Previous configuration: Shared profiles located at D:\profiles\ on PC1 (XP Pro SP3). 2nd PC (PC2 also XP Pro SP3) mapped to \\PC1\Profiles via mapped drive P: and using absolute reference in profiles.ini on PC2. Remote profiles work OK on PC2.
New PC added (PC7) to eventually replace PC1 (Windows 7/32 Pro). Profiles moved to D:\Profiles on that box. Firefox and Thunderbird work fine on PC7 with the local profiles. Profiles.ini edited on PC1 to point to the network share and will not access the remote profiles. Access permissions are set to full for everyone. I can write and edit to files in the profile directories from PC1.
I tried adding a profile with the profile manager and tried to force it to use the network share, but it still located the new profile down in the default directory ...\application data\Mozilla\Firefox\

Well, try this (I was able to fix my with these steps):
    Go Utilities > Disk Utility
Select your Startup Disk, e.g. Macintosh HD
Then, under the First Aid Tab, click Verify Disk Permissions.
If there are errors, then click repair Disk Permissions.
After it is done, restart the computer and see if your problem is resolved.
    I hope this help.

  • Error when editing HTML files - after check in

    Hi
    Version of portal = NE04SP15
I have an HTML file, and after editing and check in of such a document, Norwegian characters are represented with some strange characters.
Any idea how to solve this?
    Regards
    Kay-Arne

I have the same issue, apparently when you edit locally an HTML document that was generated with “KM HTML Editing tool” it looses some kind of attribute that makes KM to recognize it as a “KM HTML file”. So then some characters do not get rendered correctly.
If you find a solution for this issue please let me know.
Other related issue is when you transport these HTML files from one enviroment to another, again KM will not recognice its own HTML docs and then some incorrect characters may appear.

  • CS3 file will not open in CS3 after editing in CS6?!?

Pardon the exclamations but we're creative folks not techies. After editing a CS3 file in CS6 we are unable to open it in CS3. Looks like CS6 will only save back to CS4? So once edited in CS6 then I can no longer use CS3 to work with the files? Can anybody confirm this for me? We also tried to export to IDML but CS3 would not read it.

When you open an older version of InDesign file within a newer version and edit them, the older version of file is first converted using some required plugins of the newer version of InDesign and then a consolidated new file is generated including the required plugins. Now, if you try to open this newer version of file back in an older version, the older version of InDesign looks for the required plugins used to edit the file and fails because InDesign older version did not use those plugins to create your file.
Please let me know if that explanation helped understanding why this behavior occurs.
