  • Delete files on my Time Capsule

I've just bought a new MacBook Pro, and transferred all the files I need from my old mac to my new one. Now I'd like to delete all files related to my old mac from my TC, in order to get more space available for back up.
How can I delete the whole profile connected to my old MBP from my TC?

Exactly what the question's title asks.
You really ought to explain exactly what it is you want to do.
If the question is in the context of backing up your Mac using Time Machine and then having the freedom to subsequently erase the files from your Mac, the answer is most emphatically no for the reasons Bob Timmons explained. Time Machine is not an archiving utility. If you erase a file on the "source" volume, it will be erased on the backup eventually - perhaps in as little as one hour. This is by design.
If the question is in the context of using your Time Capsule to simply copy files (using the Finder, for example) so that they can be accessed by all the devices on your network, you can do that. However, if you are also using Time Machine to back up to that same volume, then the answer becomes less clear: Time Machine expects to use all the available space on the backup volume, and eventually running out of sufficient space to back up is another intentional Time Machine design consideration. Time Machine will delete old, expired backups as necessary, but when the Time Capsule eventually becomes full, you will no longer be able to copy anything to it (using the Finder), so that's not a good idea either.

  • HT201250 how do I delete files from my time capsule to make space available for backup?

I'm getting a "not enough room to complete backup" type message.  I thought timemachine cleaned up its own older backups but seems to need help.  How can I manually remove older files?

    Thanks Allan,
Help me understand what question you're referring to.  I've been through several new macs and am not sure what specifically you're speaking about.
My old mac had a partition on the drive that I do not want on the new mac, so I am concerned about doing a full restore and prefer a file by file or folder by folder. is this possible?

I was copying files to my time capsule when it crashed when it was almost finished. Now I am stuck with a light grey folder I can not delete. I would´t care if it wasn´t for the fact the folder is 1 TB size and takes up too much space. I have tried turning on and of Hiding Files in Finder and what not with no success. So, how do I delete this folder. Remember, I am not extremely familiar with technical terms.

I recommend you erase the TC.. it is the easiest and fastest solution.
In Airport utility open the disk tab and select erase.. choose quick erase.. it will take less than 1min.
Start again but copy files in small amounts.

Can I use the new Time Capsule to backup my mid 2010 Macbook Pro?
Yes, if you are asking about using Time Machine to backup the Mac.
Also can I want to free up my hard disk, can I save my photos and files on the time capsule and later access through wifi?
You are not thinking of deleting the photos and files on your Mac, are you?  If you do this, you will have no backups for those files.
Another concern is that Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point, Time Machine will automatically delete the photos and files from the Time Capsule.....you just don't know when this might occur.
In other words, only delete files from your Mac that you can afford to lose.

  • I get this message "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)" when I try and add any files to my Time Capsule

I get this message "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)" when I try and add or delete any files to my Time Capsule.  It just started happening a week ago.

I would get an external drive today and copy all your stuff off the TC.. forget trying to load more onto it. There is a good chance after 3years (A 2TB should be only about 2years tops), the disk or the TC itself is on the way out. Do it immediately. If TM is also failing to backup you need to recognise symtoms of impending doom.
Unfortunately the error messages are archane and it is hard to discover their meaning.
You also cannot verify a network drive.. you can verify the TM sparsebundle though so do that.
    A5. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Reboot the whole network from off.. certainly if you run later OS it can simply lose the drive..
If you still fail to be able to copy to the TC.. then get that external and copy off it. Tell us if you can do that.

  • Time machine file errors using Time capsule

    OK
I have been using a time capsule to backup my Intel Imac (2.8Ghz 1TB HD) for about 8 months. when it works it works but twice now I have had failures that have resulted in me having to start from scratch.
Things I have tired have been
    rebooting
Removing the latest files from the time capsule folder and retrying
removing the com.apple.timemchine.plist file from preferences
Of course all fail and my last backup (started 6-27-08) is not toast. What makes me mad is I can still access the data fine using TM but it will not continue to update. I created a folder on my TC to place the old sparse bundle in and am now currently 8gb into 1 100gb backup.
How can I avoid having to do this every 3-6 months. Is this normal or is there something unique to my system?
    thanks

this happens because you must have removed the mounted virtual volume with your filevaulted home directory from TM exclusion list. when you are logged in go to TM system preferences->options. normally, you should see your filevauled home directory on the exlcusion list. that means that the mounted virtual volume with your home directory is excluded from backups. if you remove it from the exclusion list then TM will back it up unencrypted as a separate hard drive. so if it's not on the list do the following. delete the file /library/preferences/com.apple.timemachine.plist. then go to TM system preferences and set it up again. check that the mounted home folder is on the exclusion list. then it won't be backed up anymore in the unencrypted form and the only thing that will be backed up is the encrypted sparse bundle itself.

  • I copied files to my Time Capsule prior to my IT guy setting it up. Now I can't see my files.

    Hi,
I copied all my music files to my Time Capsule prior to my IT guy setting it up wirelessly. Now I can't see my files. He has set the security up as " User accounts". I tried to set it up as "disc password". Success, I could see the files but couldn't copy them back to my computer as it came up with couldn't access the Time Capsule. Now I can't see them at all.. In windows explorer the only thing you see is ".com.apple.airport.sharepoint". How can I get my files back?

Press reset and use the TC password not disk password for security.. and leave the password of the TC at default. You should be still able to access the files..
Did you copy the files to it from windows?
Make sure you turn on the guest account to full read and write access.
Make sure windows is in home network location.. not work or public.

How can I delete everything from my Time Capsule?  Disk Utility only gives me the choices of First Aid and Restore.

How can I delete everything from my Time Capsule?
Disk Utility would be used for an internal hard drive on your Mac, or for a drive that was attached directly using USB or FireWire.
The Time Capsule is a network drive. Disk Utility cannot be used for this type of drive.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utiltiies > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
    Click the Disks icon
Click the Disks tab below the icon
    Click Erase
The "Quick Erase" option will only take a minute or so. This would be fine if you plan to keep the Time Capsule yourself.
If you plan to sell the Time Capsule, you would want to use a more secure erase, like "Zero Out", which will likely take 4-6 hours or so since everything on the drive will be replaced with zeros.

  • Thoughts regarding encryption & non-securely deleted files

Let's say you have a USB drive, non encrypted, from which you over the years have deleted a bunch of files - non-securely. Since you realize that the files are sensitive, you now choose to encrypt the drive with the right-click -> Encrypt function. Furthermore, you also set the trash can to always securely delete files from now on.
What worries me about this scenario are the old files that were deleted non-securely, before encryption: If someone would steal the drive and attempt to restore data that hasn't yet been overwritten, would those deleted files be accessible to that person? Or have the encryption effectively scrambled those old files as well?
I know that the best option is to do a 7-pass format and encrypt the drive and then move your files to it, but that isn't always an option (you might not have space to store files temporarily somewhere else, for example).
An other thing about "secure delete" which isn't really clear: Does the secure delete also overwrite previously deleted files or just the ones from the point in time when you turned on the setting?

If someone would steal the drive and attempt to restore data that hasn't yet been overwritten, would those deleted files be accessible to that person?
No. Every block on the drive will be encrypted, including free blocks.

  • How can i get files from my time capsule to my new mac?

    Hello there,
I know this topic i much discussed, but searching has not turned up a solution.
I have a new mac book pro 15 on order and want to grab my files from my time capsule.   My old mac book pro 15 (3 months old) was encrypted with file safe.  In the past i have never had good results with bringing data to a new mac from time capsules; I've tried many times for my self and family.  As a result I use the time capsule for day to day old file retrieval needs and do manual backups of my data onto externals and NAS devices for migration to new computers-tedious but it has yet to fail me.  This time, I did that with everything except a few folders of my movies and pictures.  They are now prisoner on the time capsule.
What is the best way to get files off the time capsule and does it require that my login and user name on the new mac be identical to that which was on my old mac?
(I change my user names each time i get a new mac, not specifically on purpose but i haven't paid attention to what they were when setting up a new computer.)
    any assistance is appreciated.
    Thanks

    Doggiemommie,
Copying files is not a good idea.
The "other Mac" was backed up onto Time Capsule using the Time Machine. On your new Mac you should restore the old user - rather than copy files manually.
This usually happens during the initial setup of the new computer or you can do it later using Migration Assistant.
Please note, it is possible to damage backup file on the Time Capsule when you browse it and copy files manually.
    Hope this explains.

  • Can I share the files on the time capsule for all of the macs on my network and can I access time capsule from my laptop while out of town?

I have a iMac desktop and a macbook pro.  If I purchase a time capsule, can I use it as the central location for my files for both computers?  Can I access the files on the time capsule from my macbook pro when I am out of town?

Yes, with some provisos.. it is designed as primarily a backup location for Time Machine.
Look at Pondini who has a great deal of info in his KB of all things Time Machine .. as well as Time Capsule.
    Q3 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Remote access is via BTMM and iCloud.. just look it up.
But the TC must be the main router in the network for it to work.

  • HT1178 Backed up files on a time capsule

    Hi,
My hard drive was reformatted whilst being repaired wiping all of my data. And then rebooted without re-installing my files from my Time Capsule. So how do I now re-instal my files from my last back up?
And when I re-install those files, will they merge with the documents / data that I've created since rebooting? Or do I have to back that data up first?
    Pinkafeld

Since posting this query, I've now been able to work out how to tranfer items back from Time machine.
