Secure deletion of hard drive on ibook?

I am thinking of selling my ibook and upgrading to a G5. I would like to know beforehand if there is a surefire method of deleting the hard drive of the ibook.

Launch Software Restore in your Utilities folder. It will take you through the process. If that won't allow you a complete Erase and Install, startup from the system disc and do one (an Erase and Install) and then reinstall all of the other software that came with your iBook.

  • How to delete the hard drive

I've finally bought a new IMac and need to delete the hard drive on my Power Mac G5. How do I erase it so that I can be comfortable sending the computer to the recycler?
    Thanx.

    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Can I recover data from a reformatted hard drive?  I did not do a back up prior to talking to Apple Support and the guy having me delete the hard drive and start anew.  My bad but is all lost??

Can I recover data from a reformatted hard drive?  I did not complete a back up prior to talking to Apple Support and the guy having me delete the hard drive (10.5.8) and start anew (10.6.3).  My bad but is all lost?? Years of very important information....

You will need to purchase reovery sofware such as such as FileSalvage
    http://subrosasoft.com/software/filesalvage
You can download a demo copy that will tell you what it can recover
If you want to recover that you must pay for the software then
When you do the recovery, you will need another disk drive to receive the recovered files
Having install a new operating system on the disk after the retformat is going to gradually reduce the amount of data that this software will be able to recover for you

Hi, Michelle. Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Have you tried resetting the SMC? The SMC (System Management Controller) has control over the charging function, so resetting it may help.

  • If I completely fill my hard drive 500Gb how time machine will keep working having 1Tb of total space, I mean I have to delete mu hard drive but how I keep my previous information on time machine and keep using to with new information?

If I completely fill my hard drive 500Gb how time machine will keep working having 1Tb of total space [externak hard drive], I mean I have to delete my hard drive but how I keep my previous information on time machine and keep using it with new information?

Time Machine does not provide archival storage.
If you delete a file from your disk it will eventually be deleted from your TM backup without any notice to you.
You need a second external disk to use for archival storage.
You also need a third disk for backups of the second disk.

  • How can I securely erase my hard drive and reinstall OS X Mountain Lion?

Hi, I am selling my MacBook and I was wondering if there's a way I can securely erase my hard drive, (... 7 pass, 35 pass) using these steps: http://www.mactip.net/how-to-securely-wipe-your-mac-hard-drive-before-selling-it /
and also reinstall OS X Mountain Lion afterwards.
    Thanks in advance. 

Boot into recovery mode by holding the command and r keys down during boot. Bring up Disk Utility and do the security erase you want to do. When done, choose to download Mountain Lion.

  • Help I deleted my hard drive!!

Today, I was planning on restoring my mac to factory settings. I had accidently deleted my hard drive. When I tried to restart my computer, there was no data, all there was was a blinking folder with a question mark. I immediately tried internet recovery but it had given me an error. I'm not worried about lost data. I just want to know if there is anyway to re-download my hard drive without paying any money. HELP ASAP!!

If you do not have an external drive backup, your only hope to make the Mac boot again is if you had Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks installed.  If so, you can restart and hold the Command and Option and R keys, then from the Utilities drop down menu, choose Install Mac OS X.
Your personal content and data are lost if there is not an external drive backup.

  • Colour differences & LR not deleting from hard drive

    Hi,
I am running a Dell Dimension 1100, a NEC MultiSync 70 monitor, Xp SP 2 home, Olympus Master 2 and a full version of Lightroom 1.0,Photoshop CS2, and use a Olympus E-500 DSLR.
I have a slight issue with how Lightroom shows the colours of my pictures when i am comparing Olympus Master 2 v. Lightroom 1.0. Most pictures its hard to tell the difference without going back and forth constantly, but when i look at my pictures of flowers or landscapes, my pictures look so much more vibrant in Olympus Master compared to Lightroom. Is this a settings issue? or perhaps something else?
    Also.....
when deleting pictures from Lightroom, it asks me if i wish to delete from the hard drive or just remove from Lightroom, when i choose delete from hard drive, after it says its done, if i go look at the folder its still there :/.
any help would be apprieciated, I am a novice dslr user and still learning how to use the softwares out there

Are you shooting images in raw or jpeg mode?
I assume that Olympus Master 2 is the raw processing software bundled with your camera. If so, then you are asking why Olympus software renders pictures differently than Lr. This question has been asked (and answered) many times but it boils down to the fact that the Olympus default rendering could be far different than that chosen by Lr. Also, Olympus may embed proprietary information in the raw image useful to Master 2 but entirely unknown to Lr.
If you want Lr to operate more like Master 2, then create a Lr preset (with the appropriate adjustments -- likely a saturation boost), then apply this preset when importing.
Finally, the camera raw engine (ACR) used by Lr is noted for producing images more muted than that produced by software bundled with cameras. In my opinion this is a good thing since the default rendering that many cameras produce is not at all natural. But the powerful Lr develop module allows me to create any interpretation I choose. Including a head spinning contrast and saturation boost.

Safari was accidentally deleted from hard drive. no trace of it anywhere. How do I get it back Do I have to reload Leopard or can I get from Apple Support page as an update

You don't need to reinstall Leopard.
You can reinstall Safari from here >  Safari 5.0.6 for Leopard

  • I somehow deleted my hard drive.  Is there any way to fix this other than buying a new computer?

I somehow deleted my hard drive.  Is there any way to fix this other than buying a new computer?

    Sure.
If your hard drive is still physically working, simply restore it from your computer's backup.

  • I deleted my bootcamp via DU and then deleted the hard drive by using the terminal. My BOOTCAMP is still there and now my fusion drive is separated from the SSD portion and I have no idea how to fix it.

First off I have a 3tb fusion drive.
I created a 200gb bootcamp, I tried deleting the bootcamp because I thought I messed it up and googled how to delete a mac partition which told me to use Disk Utility, did that and then erased it and somehow it got locked and wouldn't let me do anything to any partition on my hard drive (everything was greyed out)
After looking up and googling for hours I found a post saying the only way to fix it would be to go into CMD+R and go into the terminal window and type out disklist and then find the first UUID number and do something along the lines of disklist delete (UUID) i forget the exact formula. I did this, and then I had 3 separate untitled hard drives.
One in the size of 1.9gb on in 800gb and one in 121.3gb (which is the SSD), I put my time machine backup onto the 1.9gb untitled and now my computer is booting slowly (because it's no longer running off of the SSD and the original bootcamp is still there.
To be honest I am absolutely confused on what else to do!
Is there anyway I can fix this?

How do I go about deleting and then re-adding the hard drives? Completely lost on how to make it back to being a 3gb fusion drive.
Thank you for all your help, I honestly really appreciate it.
I followed your instructions and got the following

  • Delete my hard drive

    Hi.
I am about to sell my Imac G4.
What is the best way to securely delete all my personnel information and files from the hard drive.

    Hello,
Save all your data to disc/external hard disk/another computer.
Only once all your data is safe:
Boot from the OS X Install disc that came with your iMac.
Go to the menu bar and choose "+Disk Utility+".
Select "+Macintosh HD+" in the left hand pane.
    Click on the "Erase" tab.
    Click "+Security Options+"
Choose Zero all Data (use 7-pass or 35-pass if you have classified or critical financial data - these are a lot more secure but take a long time).
The hard drive is now blank. Exit Disk Utility.
Proceed with the installation of OS X.
    cheers

  • Replacing Hard Drive on iBook 14"...?

I was just at the genius bar and they said that the hard drive is toast. so the options are to send it to apple to replace the internal hard drive (estimated price from the genius bar was $280), or to replace it myself and purchase a hard disk.
Does anyone know how to gain access to the hard disk, if it is easy or hard, what type of disk is used, and if it is advisable to attempt to do it myself (i have built PCs, and am familiar with hardware configuration).
    Thanks!
    ben

    Hey Cornelius,
Print out the ifixit directions as well as the screw guide ahead of time.
    Always a good idea.
I use small medicine cups one for the screws in each step. I nest them so that the last ones out and the first to go back in are on top. You can use an ice cube tray, egg carton, dixie cups etc.
I've been doing this but lately I've taken to using 3M blue painters tape to keep all the screws in the places where they came from. I just had an iBook apart and I taped all the screws for the shields in the places they came from. Made the reassembly a total no brainer. Been doing that for a while.
Be very careful pulling out leads. Hold the lead as close to the plug as possible and wiggle (the plug ) to loosen its grip. Don’t hold the wires and pull as that can damage the cable, or worse, in some instances pull the wires out of the plug.
So if you're removing the top to access the top shield so you can put in a new hard drive. You've already removed the keyboard, Airport, RAM shield and track pad cable. The only two remaining are the speaker and the power lead.
What if we tell people not to remove the power connector as the worst case scenario is ripping the connector off the board or the wires out of the plug body. It's also deep in that hole and hard to get at. The speaker not so much and should probably be removed since it will get in the way.
The wires for the power button are held to the upper case with tape. Couldn't people just remove/move the last pieces of tape to loosen the wire so the top case could be swung up out of the way and taped securely to the display with blue to prevent dropping the top case and ripping out the connector. Exactly what we're trying to prevent.
    What do you think?
Use a plastic tool (spudge) so as not to leave marks.
Here I have to put in a plug for my G/V 3 Series Master Airscrew. A black nylon propeller I got from the hobby shop ( $2.25 ). I cut it in half to get 2 spudgers (called a black stick in later service manuals).
Putting longer screws in the wrong place can perforate the circuit board.
Especially the 10mm directly below the hard drive optical cable on the bottom middle. I've actually taken to marking that with a fine Sharpie to remind myself as well as taping the correct screw in that spot. It's easy to mix up with the two 20mm screws on the back of the case.

  • How to get songs back on iTunes once uploaded to iCloud & deleted off hard drive?

I have my 10,000 song library saved on an external hard drive.  I got the subscription to help limit used space on my laptop hard drive.  I started iTunes Match with my entire library (external drive) and uploaded my entire 10,000 songs.  Once completed I deleted everything from my iTunes program & unplugged my external.
Now my computer has absolutely no songs on it and I now expected to have access to my entire 10,000 song library from the cloud.  Once restarting my computer and iTunes I opened a library of all my songs visible in iCloud with download buttons but I was unable to actually click & download any of the songs that showed.
I turned off iTunes Match from the "Store" menu and turned it back on.  Now my library is completely empty but when I check the iTunes Match tab it tells me that I have 10,000 songs in iCloud waiting for me.
How do I get my songs???????

This sounds like an issue of the local iTunes client getting confused about the location and status of the library.
To use iTunes with all Song files on an external disk is straightforward if you have instructed it to find the Song files in that location.
A good route would be to connect the external hard drive such that iTunes client can see all your Song files as normal - check that you can both play your Songs and complete an Update iTunes Match.
Assuming all is well at this point you can instruct the iTunes client to delete all Songs keeping files and not requesting iCloud deletion.  At this stage all Songs should appear with a working download indicator against them.
If you now switch off iTunes Match.  Restart the iTunes client and create a new blank local library store on your computers internal disk, then switch on iTunes Match - all Songs will now appear.  You can complete a test download, it will simply store to your new library location.  From here you have the state you wished, all Songs accessible from the iCloud - with the ability to download should you choose.

  • How to option+delete (delete from hard drive) in iTunes 12?

In all prior versions of iTunes it was possible to option+delete a single or multiple tracks, which allowed users to delete the 'physical' files from their drives, as well as from the iTunes Library.
In iTunes 12, this option has seem to have disappeared (?)
I've just updated to Yosemite (hence iTunes 12), and have changed nothing in my iTunes preferences since this post: iTunes 11.1.2 not registering new ID3 v2.4 tags (Deleting music from both library and HDD), where I had the same issue with deleting tracks from the hard drive.
Has the keyboard shortcut been removed in iTunes 12???
This is the warning dialog when 'option+deleting' a certain track: (which doesn't delete the file from the drive, but only the library)

Yes, that's how it's supposed to work. But it doesn't. Or it does only sometimes. Here's what indeed is supposed to be available when right-clicking:
Obviously I can click "delete" and it will ask me if I really want to and whether to send to trash, etc etc.
However, here's how it works with the next item down:
Sorry, I know that these are Mac screenshots, but this is the only place I found the problem described. If nothing else, let them serve as evidence that we aren't just imagining the problem.
