Secure erase HD that's failing S.M.A.R.T.

Hi all.  Unfortunately my 2TB Western Digital HD that I had my user folder is in the process of failing, reporting S.M.A.R.T. issues.  Fortunately, I had a clone of the drive and it is under warranty from WD, who has already sent me a replacement.  The issue is, I would like to wipe the drive absolutely clean before sending it back to WD.  But Disk Utility and Drive Genius 3 are both unable to make much progress.
Does anyone know of another utility that may be able to work it's way through the drive's failings to be able to wipe the data?  I have used things like DiskWarrior in the past, but don't have a Mountain Lion compatible version and frankly don't even remain whether it would have secure erase functionality.
Thank you for any help!

If Disk Utility and Drive genius cannot write to the drive to over-write the data, it is so far gone that hackers will not be able to get the data off either.
Disk Warrior operates almost exclusively on the directory, and has no data wiping or data saving abilities.
I think that drive is really bad off, and your data are never coming off it in readable form.
If it contains Military secrets, forget the warranty and destroy it with a Hammer.

Hello cor-el, thanks for your reply. I changed my settings for downloads to desktop and it has appeared on there. When I double click I am asked which program I want to open file. I click firefox and another box "opening install" says I have chosen to open the file which is an application and do I want to save it. This is the only real option so I press save file. I get a box saying this is an executable file which may contain viruses - do you want to run. I press ok and the final box showing C drive file name and desktop appears stating application not found.
This happens the same whenever I try to install.
To my untrained eye the application is not being recognised as an application and I cannot work out how to get it to do that.
My plugin is still showing as out of date.
Is there anything you could suggest. Thanks for your time.

  • Secure Erase Free Space

    Secure Erase Free Space Failed
Secure Erase Free Space failed with the error:
    Couldn't create temporary file.
Hello, I own a 15" Macbook Pro 2011 Late model but I recently replaced the hard drive with SSD and upgraded the memory to 16gb. It was working fine for about 4 months and now sometime it freezes while browsing or even opening an application. I had to restart the macbook and sometime I would get a white screen. I was able to get by the white screen by restarting constantly. I am afraid to shut this macbook down and end up with a white screen. While I got through the white screen, I was able to use the disk utility and got this message when I was cleaning up free space. My SSD has 431.82 GB free of 478.89 GB. Can anyone tell me where do I locate the temporary file or is there something else I need to fix? Please let me know. Thank you.
    Vincent

    I understands that.
But heres what Im talking about

  • Disk Utility Error - Secure Erase Free Space failure

I have encountered a problem which I can't solve: I've used the secure erase feature to wipe unused parts of the disk before without problem. Now I get the following error message each time I try to use Disk Utility to do so:
    "Secure Erase Free Space failed
Secure Erase Free Space failed with the error:
    Could not create temporary file"
I tried it with the hard disk on the computer, my external backup disk, and a USB thumb drive. Same error message in each case.
If anyone knows the solution I would appreciate the help. I've scoured these fora and the internet to no avail.
    Thanks.

Tried booting from another hard drive and running Disk Utility Repair Disk? follow up with Disk Warrior after that.
I would just do a full volume clone, reinitialize, and restore.

  • What happens after: "Erase data after ten failed passcode attempts"  ?

What happens after data is erased from the iPhone after ten passcode attempts?
Is it the same thing as Settings->General->Erase all content and settings ?
Does the iPhone essentially becomes a permanent brick, or does the iPhone appear as a fresh device that just awaits reactivating?
    Thanks~!

All the user data on your phone is encrypted. When 10 failed attempt occur, the phone just securely erases the encryption key (overwrites it multiple times), then reboots. Without the encryption key present, even though all the data is still there, it cannot be decrypted and read anymore. Its just a load of random bits, and useless. The phone will just go through it's 'factory default' setup and quick format the flash ready to be used again as if it was a completely blank brand-new phone. At no point during any of this process is the system partition (the area that stores ios4) touched, so there is no danger of the phone being "bricked".
And even if the system partition was erased, you could still restore the phone using DFU mode. It's quite difficult to permanently brick an iPhone, you can recover from most problems.

  • Out of curiosity: Will Activation Lock still work after an iPhone auto-erases on the 10th failed passcode attempt?

Believe me, I'm no chicken when it comes to security. Using a combination of a strong alphanumeric passcode laced with non-Latin homoglyphs, Activation Lock (which Find My iPhone automatically enables), a disabled Siri when the phone is locked, a disabled Control Center when the phone is locked (both of those are security risks due to Airplane Mode), and Data Protection (erase phone after 10 failed passcode attempts), there's no doubt someone other than me is going to have a real hard time trying to use my device...
... Or so it seems. I've been digging through the Apple support articles to find out what exactly Activation Lock does, and I noticed that if someone goes into Settings -> General -> Reset -> Erase All Content and Settings and erases the device in a seemingly authorized manner, Activation Lock gets disabled with it. However, if someone else tries to erase it, or if it's erased remotely, then it will still display the Activation Lock message and require login with the username and passcode used to log in initially. Here's the real issue, though: Not one of those articles mentions what happens when you have Data Protection enabled and Data Protection happens to get set off by a thief attempting to brute force one's passcode, and how nicely Activation Lock plays with it. Does anyone else have that information, just in case?

While I have yet to confirm this with Apple, my understanding is that the auto-erase wil leave the Activation Lock intact. AL wouldn't be of much use if a thief could get around it by just entering in the wrong passcode multiple times. You'll forgive me though, I trust, if I don't try to test this with my own device.
    Regards.

  • X301 Secure Erase with new BIOS

    Hi there,
I switched to an Intel X18-M SSD on my X301 some time ago. I noticed that the new BIOS was released with Secure Erase functionality some time ago. As I was going to rebuild my laptop today, I thought I would give it a go. Turns out that this was a mistake. The utility failed on the Intel SSD necessitating a reboot after running for six hours. After the reboot, it turns out that the utility has set a hard drive password on the disk (there was not one before). As I have no way to know what password it has set, I am effectively locked out of my drive and it's a brick to all intents and purposes.
Does anyone (Lenovo in particular) know what password is set during the running of the Secure Erase functionality of the latest BIOS? My only alternative is to find out if there is a default master password from Intel. Since in principle, this should be blank, I believe that I am scuppered unless someone in Lenovo can tell me what password they set using the utility.
    Thanks in advance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Andy,
    From the instructions at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-68369:
    Turn off the computer.
    Turn on the computer.
While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
Select the Security menu of the BIOS Setup Utility menu.
Select the Solid State Drive menu. The following message is displayed. Erase the Solid State Drive in the HDD bay [Enter]
    Press Enter key.
Hitting Enter key makes showing next caution message and confirmation.
Yes confirmation shows next confirmation message.
If a harddisk password was set, a password prompt appears. Type the correct password.
Further process will start after entering the harddisk password.
Press F3 key several times to exit the BIOS Setup Utility.
As I did not have a HDD password set, I did not see step 9.
The utility is intended to perform a secure erase of a SSD using the ATA command set. In order to achieve this, it must first set a password on the drive (which is why it requires the user tell it the pwd if none has been set - see the end of this post for detailed documentation of this requirement).
In normal operation, the password would be cleared at completion of the operation. Because the operation failed however, the password is currently still there. Since I do not know what it is, I have been locked out of the (very expensive) drive.
In other tools which perform a secure erase (such as HDDERASE.EXE), the password which is set is documented for situations like this. This is not a security issue, rather it is one of following the correct process as laid down by the ATA standard.
It may well be that Lenovo has used a randomly generated password, in which case they have bricked my drive. If not, and a 'default' password is in use, then there is a means to recover the drive if they would document it. Since this is not a security issue, it really shouldn't be a problem. Furthermore, since the password was set without my consent, the security issue is mine since the utility has effectively executed a denial of service on me.
See here for details of the ATA secure erase protocols to understand how the password is used:
    https://ata.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/ATA_Secure_Erase
The relevant section which explains why the Lenovo utility does this is:
"To successfully issue an ATA Security Erase command you need to first set a user password."
This is what the utility has done and by not subsequently removing it, has denied me access to my drive.
    Cheers.

    Hi msahed,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like there is an issue with your PC establishing a secure connection to the iTunes Store and the firmware update server. Try following along with the articles below, as they should resolve the issues that you described.

  • Can I use parted magic to secure erase Apple SSD?

Recently, I have bought Apple SSD128GB (Toshiba HG3 serie) to upgrade my MBP 15" early 2011. It's a second hand drive of my friend so I want to do secure erase by using Parted Magic for improving the performance as factory reset. I have heard about Parted Magic that it will do secure erase by sending ATA command to drive's controller (If I'm not wrong) but some people mentioned OS X Lion has Trim support that needs not to do secure erase. Now I don't know which ones is correct answer and can I use Parted Magic to secure erase this drive. Please give me your ideas.

I don't know, but I doubt it can be done using Disk Utility. I suggest you consult the user manual for it or see if there is a Reset option in the onscreen menues. If you don't have a manual, then you will find one at http://support.apple.com/manuals.

  • Secure link to iTunes Store failed: HELP!

I'm new to iTunes and purchased my first iPod yesterday night. The first time I plugged in my iPod to sync it, I wasn't able to. At first I had version 10 then it updated. On the previous version I was able to access the iTunes store but wasn't able to sync my iPod. I had downloaded the most recent version of iTunes (10.1) and then this problem occured.
"iTunes could not connect to the iTunes store. The network connection timed out. Please make sure that the network settings are correct and that your netowrk is connected, then try again."
I've read several different manuals and emailed Apple about it. I've tried a lot of different things to fix it.
    +-change firewall settings+
    +-redownloaded iTunes+

    +-changed proxy settings+
    +-changed permissions+

What do I do? Any information and suggestions would be very helpful.

i found a solution that worked in my case..i found it in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2284692?start=0&tstart=0 in texlark's post..i copied and pasted it here:
The Fix (& It's NOT Your Firewall)
    A. Symptoms
When you try to connect to the iTunes Store you may receive the alert message "We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occured (-9808). There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later."
    B. Resolution
Check your computer's date, time, and time zone. Set the correct date, time, and time zone if needed. If your computer's date, time, and time zone are all correct and you still see this alert message, this issue can be resolved by modifying certain settings in the Internet Options control panel:
    1) Go to the Start menu and choose Control Panel.
    2) Select Internet Options.
Note: If you are using Windows Vista you may need to select Classic View on the left before you can see Internet Options.
Note: If you are using WIndows 7 you may need to change "View by" to either Large icons or Small icons before you can see Internet Options.

  • Secure Link to itunes store failed issue

I cannot access the itunes store or even authorize my computer.  I have been working on this for months.  Done everything that Apple support emailed me and I am ready to go crazy.  My diagnostic shows secure link to itunes store failed.  Can anyone help?

    Many thanks.
With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:

    Hi msahed,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like there is an issue with your PC establishing a secure connection to the iTunes Store and the firmware update server. Try following along with the articles below, as they should resolve the issues that you described.

  • Secure link to itunes store failed computer not connected to internet tried ununininstalling everything to do with itunes no joy also error code coming up E0000225 anybody out there got any ideas

Secure link to itunes store failed, (computer not connected to internet tried uninstalling everything to do with itunes,no joy also errror code E0000225 appearing. Have turned off windows firewall and also my Bullguarg security settings. Can anybody out there please help me thanks.

    Hi,
You could be right that the response to clicking on help is a symptom of an entirely separate issue, but nevertheless the secure link to itunes is definitely failed, and I am unable to log into Itunes on either PC.
I also noticed that even if I click on the link to create a whole new Apple ID, I cannot do that either, presumably because the secure link is not working.
After I noticed that there were weird things happening this morning, I did change my Apple ID password in the hope that this might resolve it, but it seemed to make it worse.  Now, all of my apple devices keep constantly prompting me for the apple ID password, and randomly either accepting it, or telling me it is wrong.  I know the password is correct because I can log onto the apple Manage My Apple ID screens in a web browser with it.
I was starting to think that this is an ISP issue (BT Broadband), but I have not seen anyone else posting with the same issue.  Does Apple use a different security protocol to everyone else?  I'm asking because all other secure services seem to be working fine, but anything related to apple that requires a secure connection or authentication is having issues.
I have also seen reference to making sure that Itunes is listed as an allowed program in Windows Firewall.  I cannot seem to do this because it says that my Windows firewall is being managed by McCafee.  I have checked the settings in McCafee, and it appears to me that Itunes, Bonjour, and many other apple programs have been granted "Full" access.  As said before in any case I have tried temporarily disabling the firewall and even this did not solve the problem.

  • ITunes 64-bit runs 32-bit, Secure link to iTunes Store failed, and SyncMapiInterfaceHelper_x64 crashes every time I click 'Info' tab in an iDevice.

    Hello everyone,
There are 3 issues I have, as it reads in the title.
    1) I am running iTunes on a Win7 64-bit ThinkPad, and iTunes shows up as a 32-bit application in the Task Manager, always. I tried even the complete uninstalling (after removing Bonjour, Apple Mobile Service, deleting the folders, etc.) and yet, it shows up the same way.
    2) When I run diagnostics, it says 'Secure link to iTunes Store failed'. I've tried many things from whatever I've read in the forums and nothing seems to be changing that.
    3) Every time I click the 'Info' tab on any iDevice (I tried it with a 3GS and a iPod Touch), I get a 'SyncMapiInterfaceHelper_x64 has stopped working' message thrice. I don't know the significance of thrice but it just does come.
    I hope someone helps.
    Thanks!

That one's normal. On 64-bit systems, iTunes is a mix of 32-bit and 64-bit componentry. The itunes.exe is 32-bit.
    Oh, okay. Thanks!
Could you walk us through what happens when you try to connect to the Store, please?
The issue is when I run diagnostics. I happened to run it last night while updating my 3GS to iOS 6, and there was a 3194, and a search to solve that, led me to running the diagnostic.
I was wondering how it affects me because I haven't faced any issue in downloading or browsing the AppStore. The transcript of the 'Run diagnostics', for networks is as below:

Nothing about the 3rd? It is pretty confusing as to why it appears because there don't seem any answers all over the web about it.

  • HT203163 I am not able to access to iphone updates/store; as secure link to itunes store failed. I tried to turn firewall off, reinstall itunes and other troubleshoot options but none of them works.....

I am not able to access to iphone updates/store; it displays the message under diagnostics 'secure link to itunes store failed'.
I tried to turn firewall off, reinstall itunes and other troubleshoot options but none of them works......
    Please help.

Update:  I tried the "Toshiba Recovery Wizard" after everything else either fizzled out or hung up. After going all the way thru the recovery process (up to 100%), I finally got an error message.....it didn't work. And now, when I fire up the computer, I don't even get to that menu with the recovery options....the only thing I can boot into is the screens with the various ways to run your OS (in "safe mode", "safe mode with networking", etc).
I'm not a techie, but I'm guessing at this point, the part of my hard drive that got damaged in the fall was, at the very least, the partition with the recovery data. Couple that with the fact that this cheapo Toshiba laptop didn't even come with recovery disk (or ANY kind of disk, even basic installation software!), I'm screwed: I don't see any way to get a workable computer now without some kind of disk to boot from. So NOW my concern is more about spending the $$ for a new OS and THEN finding out the hard drive has other problems too...is broken in some other way to boot.
How to check this? As I said, I did run "chkdsk" back when I could get into the recovery menu and run the fix-it programs. It didn't note any problems. Thinking of taking this opportunity to upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista (which I never liked), but I have to know that the computer is otherwise ok....how to be sure?
