SECURE file-sharing to one individual

I am an accountant, and in the past we always were able to use the Acrobat.com file-sharing system to SECURELY share files containing sensitive information to one person, without making them public for anyone with the link to see.  Is that no longer possible now that Acrobat is using the cloud to share files?

oof.  THANKS a ton for this.
so just so i understand - currently the drag and drop (or CTRL+V) option from withing iTunes brings the /file/ "into" the app on the phone in some way - so that you can access that file once you open the app.
alternatively i can put files in dropbox and access these from my the dropbox (of skybox or whatever) APP on my iPhone is another method to get files so that my iPhone can access them (when i have wifi access or a cell phone connection) - however not all Apps on my phone are going to be able to open a file from dropbox is that right?
i mean, i have an app on my phone that i need to use but the only way they have to access the file right now is if i EMAIL it to myself and then find the email and then click on the attachment and then it asks me if i want to open it in this app.
i guess some apps will work like this if i open the file from dropbox? and some will require me to load or paste them into the hinky iTunes interface?
can you help me with what Documents5 will do for me in the context of the above methods? will it get me some simplified workflow?
right now getting into iTunes is not ideal since this means i have to MOVE THE FILES to my MBP in the first place so that i can drag and drop them into itunes and then i have to manually sycn my phone - major pain in my opinion.
i mean, it's 2014 - shouldn't i have an icon on my desktop that i can drop files to and have them show up and /work/ from an icon or app on my iphone - full stop no exceptions?

  • Best Practice For Secure File Sharing?

I'm a newbie to both OX X Server and File Sharing protocols, so please excuse my ignorance...
My client would like to share folders in the most secure way possible; I was considering that what might be the best way would be for them to VPN into the server and then view the files through the VPN tunnel; my only issue with this is that I have no idea how to open up File Sharing to ONLY allow users who are connecting from the VPN (i.e. from inside of the internal network)... I don't see any options in Server Admin to restrict users in that way....
I'm not afraid of the command line, FYI, I just don't know if this is:
    1. Possible!
And 2. The best way to ensure secure AND encrypted file sharing via the server...
    Thanks for any suggestions!

my only issue with this is that I have no idea how to open up File Sharing to ONLY allow users who are connecting from the VPN
Simple - don't expose your server to the outside world.
As long as you're running on a NAT network behind some firewall or router that's filtering traffic, no external traffic can get to your server unless you setup port forwarding - this is the method used to run, say, a public web server where you tell the router/firewall to allow incoming traffic on port 80 to get to your server.
If you don't setup any port forwarding, no external traffic can get in.
There are additional steps you can take - such as running the software firewall built into Mac OS X to tell it to only accept network connections from the local network, but that's not necessary in most cases.
And 2. The best way to ensure secure AND encrypted file sharing via the server...
VPN should take care of most of your concerns - at least as far as the file server is concerned. I'd be more worried about what happens to the files once they leave the network - for example have you ensured that the remote user's local system is sufficiently secured so that no one can get the documents off his machine once they're downloaded?

  • File Sharing Only One-Way Now Since Soft Crash

    Greetings!
Several months ago my 1.25 10.4.11 eMac suffered not a physical hard drive crash but some kind of software crash that scrambled directories. Disk Warrior made the system functional again, save an occasional prefs or cookie glitch caused by a .plist file or cookie file's permissions having been re-set by the crash as "no access" or "no read-write" or even no admin or system or user name access at all (such that Safari wouldn't take new cookies since the crash date) which I fix by re-setting read-write to my user name access and admin as secondary access.
I mention this because since the crash it seems that File Sharing on my eMac side is corrupted. I use ethernet to link my eMac with my 900mHz 10.4.11 iBook and prior the crash I could open each other's HD icon on another's desktop without a problem, but now I can only access my iBook's HD icon on my eMac but not the other way around. Actually my eMac's HD icon does appear on my iBook's desktop before the connection's broken after a few seconds, and my eMac's Sharing panel suddenly "ghosts" the Personal File Sharing listing and states "Personal File Sharing Is Turning On" when it's actually broken off.
I've done the works from changing locations to wearing Onyx and Dusk Utility out trying to remedy this but no go. I highly suspect that some critical file sharing files in my eMac may've had their permissions turned off like other .plist files were, but if so, I don't know which files are File Sharing related to check this out if indeed they're responsible. If anyone can point these out for me it might be half the battle won.
    Any assistance would be welcome!
    James Greenidge

I hesitate to jump in because I am running OS 10.5.6, rather than 10.4.x ... but the a guy over in the Leopard discussions simply advised me to search the archives for a solution to my problem and the search led me here.
Sharing seems to be broken on my Mac. The finder disappears whenever I try to set 'sharing' for a folder.
The problem that James had with his machine seemed similar and I was prepared to delete the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist, as suggested by BDAqua. But I DON'T HAVE such a file !! Hmmmmm.
    There is one more thing that might be pertinent. I repaired permissions with DISK UTILITY a couple of times after each time Finder disappears and always receive the same ominous message that the following SUID files had been modified and will not be repaired;
    - System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad
    - usr/bin/setregion
    - System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner
    - System/Library/Printers/IOMs/LPRIOM.plugin/Contents/MacOS/LPRIOMHelper
I have no idea what that is all about.
    Any suggestions would be welcome.

  • File sharing on one laptop with 2 accounts

First off I wanna say that I am new and I haven't been in this forum before (so please don't flame me if this thread is in the wrong place).....
My wife and I are still getting used to our new macbook pro. We have set up seperate accounts for each other so she can keep her work info seperate from my school info.
However, I would like to be able to share files like photos and office documents and spreadsheets between us. I know there is a way we can do this, but I haven't figured it out on the apple platform just yet.
With this being said does anyone have a few nuggets of knowledge on this issue? Any bit would be appreciated

    Go to:
Apple Menu > System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing

  • File sharing only works in one direction

I have a 2011 iMac and a 2012 rMBP. File sharing is turned on on both machines, but when I try to connect to the MBP from the iMac, it refuses the connection. I've noticed that it works if I check that box for my account for Windows file sharing (the one that stores your password using a weaker hash I think) on the MBP, but I shouldn't need to do that, hence why I'm here.
It of course works absolutely fine going from MBP to iMac.
Anybody experience something similar, or have any suggestions short of reinstalling the OS?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • File sharing for mac

I need a file sharing program for mac. I tried poisoned, and another one, but they all have pc files, isn't there a mac only file sharing program, one that only shares mac files?

    AStedraDJ:
Maybe if you described what you are trying to accomplish it will be easier to direct you. Mac OS has it's own file sharing feature which enables file sharing between two macs. In OS X go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Sharing. However, if that is not what you are looking for please post back with further clarification.
    Good luck.

  • Security Question: Shared Files on a Network

Security Question from a Network Newbie
    Hi:
I recently returned from a meeting at a large city hotel. While at the meeting, I used the fancy hotel’s hard-wired connection to access the internet. Imagine my surprise when the next morning one of the others peakers mentioned to me, “I see that you were in the hotel; your computer was file shared to everyone in the hotel”!
How can this be? I have never changed default settings toallow this.
Does this mean that anyone in the hotel could have navigated to any file on my computer and accessed it?
How do I prevent this from ever happening again, yet still maintain my ability to access the internet and get work done?
    Thank you!
    OS 10.6.8

Just have Printer sharing and Bluetooth sharing checked in Sharing.
I really appreciate your advice and realize you have nothing to do with Apple's design process, but why would Apple allow others to see your computer on a network when one has a firewall turned on and "Block all incoming connections" enabled? What good does this serve in an era when everyone is so concerned about security? Why would Apple allow this?
How worried should I be: you say "they could see your System but not necessarily access your files.  Probably just the public dropbox." Is it likely that they could just get the public dropbox, or could some nefarious individual figure a way to access other files?
Is there an OEM software product that allows good secuirty on an Apple system, ie no sharing of files/access to one's computer with certainty?
    Thanks again for your advice!

  • Can you confirm a security hole in file sharing?

I have found a very annoying security hole, and I wonder if it is unique to my setup. I have my mini set up with file sharing turned on. It has 5 accounts, one administrator, rest ordinary users. My login for the administrative user on my laptop is the same as on the mini. I have not turned on "Back to my Mac."
From my laptop I navigate to the mini using either (a) the network panel in finder, (b) the local IP (afp://192.168.0.xxx), or the global IP (afp://64.xxx.xxx.xxx). (My router is set up to forward the appropriate ports to the mini's local IP). I mount the administrative user's home directory under apple file sharing. Now I have full access to these files. I DO NOT SAVE THE PASSWORD IN KEYCHAIN. All this is as it should be.
Now I eject the administrator disk.
From now on (until I reboot my laptop), I can mount that same disk without a password!
    Can someone confirm?

    {quote:title=William Lloyd wrote:}This is not a security hole.{quote}
While I can understand that some may consider Kerberos automagically creating what is essentially a keychain without the users express knowledge or consent a "feature", I definitely consider it a bug and a huge security hole.
The kerberos ticket should not live longer then the user is actually connected to the machine. Currently, if the user clicks the Disconnect button the Kerberos ticket lives on and any future connections to that server will user that ticket. This is not what users (especially novice to intermediate) would expect. If the user clicks the Disconnect button, then they would expect that they are completely disconnected and any further connections to that server would require authentication. Otherwise they leave their machine wide open, hense the security hole.
The other thing that makes this so nasty is that if the OS decides not to use kerberos, for whatever reason, the behavior is different. It behaves as the user would expect. Clicking Disconnect does completely disconnect you from the server and any future connections will require authentication. So at a minimum there is a dangerous inconsistency in behavior between when the OS uses Kerberos and when it doesn't. That, at a minimum, should be fixed.

  • Why does file sharing with OS 10.8.3 fail only in one direction?

I'm having trouble getting file sharing to work in both directions.
I have a late 2012 Macmini and an early 2013 MBP, both running OS 10.8.3.
I can get my mini to connect to the MBP, access the public folders, and even share screen.
Going the other way from the MBP, the connection fails.
Taking cues from all the other discussions of the question, I have created an additional
administrator on the MBP and given him sharing only privileges on the mini. Booting in
Safe mode works fine on the MBP. And, I deleted preference lists related to sharing and security
    on both machines.
I have verified both HDs, and repaired all permissions with Disk utility.
Although the name of the mini shows up in the sidebar of the MBP, neither admin user on the MBP
succeeds in connecting to the mini. It's always the same message - check the IP, etc.
I'm wondering if I can use Time Machine to back up the one "real" home folder on the MBP,
then completely rebuild the user list on the MBP, restore the home folder from TM, and clear things up that way.
I've been fooling with this since long before the 10.8.3 update. After that update, it frequently failed in either direction
until I started in on it again this morning and got the mini-to-MBP link to work.
Any help will be very greatly appreciated!!
    Bob

    Thanks, Linc!
I can connect the mini to my wife's AirBook and share her screen.
I can connect via wired connection to a USB printer, as well as to a wireless printer
    on our network.
The firewalls on both machines are OFF.
That gave me an idea to connect the two laptops.
I can connect the AirBook to the MBP, but to share screen I must use the
    "ask permission" radio button.
I can connect the MBP to the AirBook and access wife's public folder.
Screen sharing option does not come up.
    Her firewall is also off.

  • Personal File Sharing -- How secure it is?

    Hi,
I have a hopefully easy question for you network expert:
    1) I turned on Personal File sharing.
    2) In one folder, I changed ownership & Permissions in "Others" to "Read & Write"
    3) My network is wireless with encrption turned on.
I have done some testing but since I don't have a Windoze machine to test, I am wondering: Can someone OUTSIDE my wireless network gain access into my shared folders? Is this possible?
    Thanks for any advice.

Only if you open up port 548 on your wireless router
and use NAT to direct that traffic to port 548 on
your machine. The same will be true of Windows
    sharing, just with different ports.
The moral of the story is that a hardware router will
go a long way to keeping viruses and hackers out of
    any network.
    Thanks.

  • File sharing works with one xp machine, not the other

Hi folks, I just switched over to Mac! So far so good with my new macbook. I have two identical gateway xp machines. Strange thing is, the macbook connects perfectly to one of the gateways for file and print sharing, but cannot connect to the other. In finder the name of the computer appears under "shared", but when I click on it, after attempting to connect, it says "connection" failed. For the xp machine in question, I have run the home networking "wizard" and have used trouble shooter. The computer has a unique name on the network, and the directories have been set for sharing. I've tried removing the firewall--though the firewall is instructed to permit networking. So, what can I do? Thanks everybody.

    Interesting.
On the troublesome XP box, set the permissions for your shares are set that "everyone" can read the share. (No need to give write access).
I am assuming that you are using XP Pro and staying away from "Simple File Sharing".
