Secure wireless connections

Hello, all!
What should I do to avoid sniffers from scanning my network? Any advices and comments are welcomed! Thanks.

The TKIP solution is actually part of a framework called Wi-Fi Protected Access or WPA. It is an interim fix for WEP which is easily compromised. The WPA solution uses existing technologies like 802.1x and TKIP. It is meant for existing access points currently running the insecure WEP and have upgradable firmware which can then be used for WPA. With WPA, you can place your APs on the internal LAN.
The VPN solution is a very good alternative where you place your APs on the outside of the LAN. Users then have to connect via some kind of VPN client to reach the internal LAN.
The easiest and most secure solution will be 802.11i but this requires specific hardware that most current APs on the market lack. It uses AES-CCMP instead of TKIP. This IEEE standard has not been ratified yet as far as I know.
Since you are asking in a Cisco forum - currently, the Cisco APs that support WPA are the ones running IOS like the 350, 1100 and 1200. Otherwise, you can use VPN.
Check wi-fi.com and google for above terms and you will find lots of resources including on Cisco's documentation site.
I have not personally tried the VPN solution but WPA works great for me on a 350.

I have an older Linksys BEFW11s4 I want to have a secured wireless connection and I don't know how to do it. When I see my wireless connection, it says unsecured.

  • Secure Wireless Connection

I have been thinking about getting the iPhone ever since it came out and I guess I was wondering if anyone could answer whether or not it can connect to secure wireless connections that require a password. I am a college student and we have wireless throughout campus but it requires my student id and password to be typed in if it were used on a computer. Thanks for any information.

I have the same problem. I can easily access wireless networks everywhere except at work (a college also). Our system requires both a user name and password. Laptops easily access the network but I can't log on with my iphone. It is a real bummer because our campus has thick old brick buildings and edge will not penetrate them meaning that I am dead in the water without wireless. BTW network wireless at the college is the only thing that I don't have working flawlessly on the iphone. I had two of out best IT guys mess with my iphone for a couple of hours and they said that unless apple gives a fix that allow for both a user name and pass work when logging in that they can't help me. ANYONE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE?

  • How to secure wireless connection with additional laptop and ipod touch.

    Hello,
We are new to Mac and struggling with internet security.
We have a wireless internet dongle that connects into a USB port and some days our ipod touch can connect other days it cant, I am never prompted for a password to connect.  This morning we were setting up a new laptop for our daughter and it found our wireless network and informed us it was unsecured. So we assume anyone within range is utilising our wireless connection.
If I turn on firewalls it shuts off everything, if we look at airport we get even more confused.
Is there a simple way to resolve this so our internet connection is for our house only and new devises that try to connect need to enter a password.
    Thank you for your help!

  • HT1595 Apple tv and a secure wireless connection

My daughters wireless connection at her college requires a username to login (a netid). How can I configure the apple tv to use such a network?

When your daughter contacts the IT Dept at her school, she will need to provide the MAC address. Settings, General, Network
Right above the Signal Strength bars you will see a set of letters and numbers.
That is a hardcoded specific address of the device which is unique to it. Each network device has such an address (your smart phone, network printer, modem, your laptop, ...)
If the school allows they will enter the MAC address into their list of allowed devices to bypass the login screen.

  • Have problems sending mail from a secure wireless connection. but ok from starbucks

I have several clients here at my marina all using different email providers and they all seem to have problems sending out mail from my secure wireless. They can recieve mail no problem. Now here is where it get weird. I added my gmail account to one of the problem iphones and same thing was happening, when i go to send out an email from my account on their phone it gets stuck trying to send mail. I compaired server setting on my phone to his and everything was that same, even turned off his server from fairpoint(the email he uses) and kept my gmail one and still couldnt send mail from his phone but worked fine on mine. Apple set up this individuals iphone/ipad so it make me think they did something when he had the accounts added. Any thoughts?

  • WPA/WPA2 secured wireless connection fails for two minurtes for every hour of use.

    Hello.
I have a brand new ThinkPad T500 2055-A16 with Windows Vista Business. I have a WiFi connection problem. It is not a signal strength problem, as it doesn't work even if I place the computer right next to the access point with no other wireless equipment near by.
None of my other computers experience this problem. I even bought another ThinkPad T500 2055-A16 at the same time as this one, and that does not have the problem either. The problem is when I connect to a network using WPA2-PSK or WPA-PSK. The connection works fine for half an hour, an hour or two hours, but then without warning, the connection is lost and it is not possible to reconnect for half a minute, a minute or two minutes. The exact times vary. When I switch the network to use WEP or no encryption, everything works fine. But I don't like to use no encryption and I cannot use WEP because I have other computers in my home which does not support WEP.
I had this problem right from the beginning the first time I used the computer. I have tried many things like disabling power management or IPv6 and other things suggested by my ISP, but it did not change anything, so I switched them back to their default value. I have also tried to update the driver for the Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN card, but that didn't help the problem. The problem became slightly less annoying when I uninstalled Access Connections, because Vista would then reconnect as soon as it could, whereas I in Access Connections would have to continuously press the connect button until it succeeded. But the problem is still a real pain.
Some pieces from the Windows Event Viewer, which I think looks interesting (these occur regularly at exactly the same timestamps as when the connection is lost):
     Profile match: Success
     Pre-Association: Success
     Association: Success
     Security and Authentication: Fail
    0x00048005 and 0x0003800b
    Result of diagnosis: Problem found
Issue referred to: L2Sec Helper Class
I also see the following message on my access point's log, which also occur at exactly the times when the connection is lost:
    1x:00216b4d7ee6:logout
(The number match the MAC address of my computer)
The only other message which is logged on my Access Point when all log options are enabled is "Time initialized by NTP server".
How can I solve this problem so that I can have undisrupted wireless Internet access?

Edit: Actually my other ThinkPad T500 2055-A16 also fails in the same way, but my ThinkPad SL500 2746-9BG and my Medion laptops works fine, also running Vista.

  • Secure wireless connection = countless disconnects (WRT54GSv5)

Not sure what can be done here but I'm having trouble with a friend's setup. He's using a WMP54GS 1.1 card to connect to a WRT54GS v5. I've tried WEP, WAP and WAP2 - none of the security settings make a difference. They all cause slowdown, disconnects and difficulties with acquiring a connection to the router But, there are no issues when the card is connected to the router without security enabled. Latest firmware and drivers are being used. Tried to see if there is a later version of the Network Monitor app but since it's tied to the drivers the app version is still the same. I also tried installing just the drivers but that didn't help either Message Edited by andyd2k on 02-02-2008 02:26 PM

Does same thing happen with other wireless computer also? Try connecting from some wireless laptop working properly at other wireless networks, to identify the issue.

  • 10.4.11 and secure wireless connectivity

Have G3 and emac running 10.4.11.  These are capable of "WPA personal".  I realize that significant progress in wireless security has supposedly been made, but it seems that newer routers (FIOS in my case) will not allow these older macs to connect even though I am willing to keep the WPA instead of WPA2 (which my newer macs are capable of).
Is there a way to do this or should I give up?
Also, since I use the 10.4.11 macs less than the newer ones, I don't see a lock next to a WPA personal network in the airport menu of the 10.4.11 macs, even though shows up as a WPA personal network in the network pref pane.  Is it safe to assume that the lock icon was not part of 10.4.11?
I have all the macs running now on an older FIOS router, but I need to upgrade the router. I have a newer (not the newest) FIOS router that I have been swapping in/out and just can't get the older macs to join on the newer router
    Thanks

You could get another wifi router to ethernet. Attach via ethernet to your new fios router.  Note to do printer sharing and/or file sharing. all devices need to be connected to the same router. Unless, you are a networking geek and buy more expensive hardware. You can get to the internet from any router.

which modem and router model do you have.   model #?
In general you can follow this guide for Verizon Equipment
How can I change my wireless network to WPA2 or WPA encryption?
Verizon recommends using the strongest network encryption compatible with your network devices. In most cases, that is WPA2 encryption. However, you will notice some of the older devices below may not be compatible with WPA2 encryption. In those instances, WPA is the preferred encryption because it is still stronger than WEP.

  • Connecting with secure wireless

Hi, this is my 1st venture with an apple computer but I seem to have hit a wall already.
I am using a wireless G unbranded router that is secured by a 10 digit WEP passcode, it can also be set up to use WPA but I had trouble with the vista laptop that connects to the network using WPA, there is also an XP laptop which will connect using either. I believe the WEP is only 64 bit so I'll try upping it to 128 and see what happens. For information there are 3 laptops that need to connect all with different operating systems, OSX, XP & Vista.
The problem is my MBP doesn't like the secured connection, it will connect wirelessly if the connection is unsecured or it will connect via ethernet so I know it can communicate with the router.
If I secure the connection by WEP then it says connection failed or if I do it by WPA then it says connection timed out, at no time does it have trouble seeing the network.
Does anyone know what i need to do to get it working. I believe the WEP is only 64 bit so I'll try upping it to 128 and see what happens but does anyone else have any other ideas?
    Many thanks
    James

Right I am very pleased to say that I am typing this on my secured wireless connection, I could go on about how much I'm loving the laptop but I'm sure you already know.
I have noticed that when I reboot or put it to sleep that when it comes back on it won't connect again, it says that none of my prefered networks are available but when I click connect it remembers the key but states login failed. In order to connect I use the assist function then diagnostics, select airport, select my network, it then asks if my network is PPPoE or DHCP, I select DHCP, then it scans and states that the connection appears to be working correctly and I'm able to use the net.
I have to do this everytime, I have updated to the latest software available for everything but it's made no difference. Is there anything that I am doing wrong?
    Thanks again

  • E2500 constant connectivity failures when secure wireless configured

My E2500 constantly drops connectivity (wired and wireless) when secure wireless is configured through the Linksys Connect software. The problem doesn't happen if the router is left unsecured.
    Router Firmware: 3.0.00 build 6.
    ISP: Comcast cable
    Cable modem model UBEE D3.0
I use a mix of wired and wireless - the PCs are wired and the tablets and phones use wireless connections. The laptop uses wired at the desk and wireless elsewhere.
When I first got the router and used Linksys Connect to configure, the connection was moderately stable for about a week, then started dropping frequently. Recycling the modem and resetting the router to factory defaults stabilized the connection.
Today I re-ran the Linksys Connect software to configure secure wireless for my wireless devices, and the intermittent connectivity problem came back immediately - I couldn't get more than a minute or two online without the connection dropping out.
I don't like running without secured wireless connection, but I don't see an alternative.

3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

  • Wireless Connection on the PC side of the Intel Duo

I have a new IMAC 20 Intel Duo. I set up a secure wireless connection (WAP) through the Linksys WRT54G thats works fine when running MAC OS10. When I switch to the XP side I cannot connect to my secure network. In the available networks it recognizes all other nearby networks but my secure one. I am able to connect through an unsecured network ., but the signal strenth is minimal. Any suggestions?

Did you create a closed network on your router? If it is closed, computers can't see the wireless network and you have to connect by putting in the exact network name and password in the connect dialog.

  • Restarting the computer and re-establishing the wireless connection

I am a wireless newbie. I just got a g router  and established a secure wireless connection. When I restart the computer it seems like I have to reestablish the wireless connection with a wired connection before it will log me in to my wireless connection. Is this what happens? Also, now when I try to "view available wireless conncections" it has my SSID but since it's secured I need a password of some kind to access it. I don't recall signing up for a password so I don't know it. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi…I would suggest you to login in the router setup page from your wired computer, through internet explorer by typing in 192.168.1.1 in address bar > skip username and > enter admin as password. Click Wireless Tab > second sub Tab Wireless security, you will find your wireless network key or wireless password that you need to enter on our wireless computer while connecting to your wireless network. Once you get connected to your wireless network it will not ask you to enter your wireless security code or password even if you restart your computer.
