Securing a PDF or flattening a PDF

When you create a PDF from Indesign, it is possible to secure it to make it non-editable, for example if you have a watermark that you don't want people to be able to remove. However, there is a lot of software applications that can over-ride the security. Is it possible to create a secure PDF from Indesign that can not be tampered with or is it possible to completely flatten a PDF (like an image) so there is no editable elements. If not, is there any third-party apps (server based or with API's) that can make a PDF more secure?
Thanks, Tim

Yes, we're looking at the jpeg option. It's not as ideal for a customer though if they are looking at a 16-page brochure as it would mean 16 jpegs. Was hoping maybe there was a way to secure or completely flatten a PDF.
Hi Steve, the remove watermark feature in Acrobat does not remove our watermarks. Ours are added as .idms files at the Indesign Server stage when rendereing the proof PDF. However, it is possible to remove them with the touch-up object tool option in Acrobat and using the delete key, which is also easily done.
So, what I can gather from this is there is no real way of securing or comletely flattening a PDF when creating the PDF from Indesign. So, maybe there is a third-party application which can do it?

  • How do I secure a PDF that has been signed so that it can't be opened in the new Word

    Hi all
Hoping someone can help. As the title suggests I need some advice in securely locking a PDF after it has been signed.
I know how to secure a PDF document so that it can't be opened in the new version of the Word 2013.
File > properties > Security and pick password protect
Then open Word and down the bottom left hand corner click 'open other documents'
This then attempts to open the PDF and if secure it will fail to open if unsecured it will open making the content fully editable
However when you sign a document you can't secure it by going file > properties > Security and pick password protect.
Then open Word and down the bottom left hand corner click 'open other documents'
This then opens the PDF and makes the content fully editable but removes the signature
The content is fully editable - how can I lock this????????????????????????????
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Garetch,
You could encrypt the file first, but set the permissions to allow for signing. After that you can sign the encrypted file (you just can't encrypt a signed file). As long as you get the order of operations correct (encrypt first, sign second) you will end up at the same place you are trying to get to.

  • Edit a secure interactive PDF form without regenerating form?

I have a client who needs for me to make a minor change to a password-secured interactive PDF form we've created for her. I have the password, of course, but Adobe Acrobate won't let me know enter the password without first saving the form as a copy. This, however, strips all of the interactivity from the form. I don't want to have to redo all of the fields just to make this minor change, and I imagine I'm just missing the obvious method of entering the password.
So, how to I disable the password without wiping out the interactive fields so I can make the change then save the form again with security and interactive form fields intact?

Thanks, Luke. They do. But then when I go to add the password security back to the document, I'm told:
You cannot change security on this document because the document enables extended features in Adobe Reader. You can save a copy without extended Reader features using File -> Save A Copy.
This, of course, takes me back to square one. I need to make the change but keep the same password protection (disabling the ability to edit the file) intact.

  • Adding security destroys PDF

    Hello,
    Using Pro 9.
When add security to PDFs made some time ago using Pro 4, the effect is threefold:
    1. Some pages go blank
    2. Bookmarks disappear
    3. Some pages have scambled letters (gobbledegook alphabet).
Perfectly OK when not usuing security.
Please can anyone suggest a  solution.
    Cheers

    Hi Grafitti,
You are right, no Pro 4.
It was my attempt to say that it was the earlier version no 4 (of Abode acrobat) which was used for making PDFs.
The exact name of it I do not know as these PDfs were made in 2002 & I do not have access to the original software
    Cheers

  • Security in PDF online converted files

As you know, Microsoft Word allows you to convert their files into PDF. However, there is no security. Therefore one can highlight a signature for example and copy it as a way to lift someone's signature off the document and create an image of the signatrue for subsequent fraudulent use. The question is: when one converts a Word document using the Adobe online conversion program, are there security settings that can prevent the copying any part of the document, including the signature? Please advise. I want to become a subscriber to the online service, but frankly, this is the most important feature that I am looking for. Thanks for your anticipated response.
    JGL SR.

    Hi there JGL,
CreatePDF doesn't have the ability to secure your documents against content extraction. For this functionality, you'll need Adobe Acrobat. You can learn more about Adobe Acrobat by visiting: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html

  • Acrobat 9: Apply Security to PDF v6 without it changing to v7.

    Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.0.0 (MAC)
Apple Mac Book Pro 17" 2.4Ghz, 4GB RAM.
I am working for a client which is using Adobe Reader 6, but I am using Acrobat 9 Pro. By using the Reduce File Size function and setting it to version 6 and later, I have managed to make the files open in Reader 6 without any warning about the PDF files being made in a later version that that being used to read them.
This works, and there is no version warning, however, when I apply security to all 90 PDFs, which is set to version 6, the PDFs once again give the version compatibility warning.
So, is there a way to apply security to a PDF using Acrobat 9.0.0 and enable it to be opened with reader 6 without version warnings (other than using Acrobat 6, which I do not have)?
    Thanks all.

I have checked and the security, as set, remains intact after the reduce file size function.
Under document properties (I am checking every file to make sure) PDF is version 1.5 and security does what I asked it to prevent/allow.
Thanks for your assistance in this matter - a long project full of unexpected twists (like this security biz) is now at its end.

  • How to remove security from pdf created in Acrobat pro 10 to allow addition of watermark?

    Hi All,
I am a newbie to the forum. I have a dynamic form created in acrobat pro 10. Each time I open the form to add watermark on it, i have a message that says " You don't have sufficient permissions to perform this tasks" and as a result the watermark process will not proceed.
When I created the form, I save the form with no security in the default. But,when you click on the form properties, it will display that this form has some pdf restrictions such as :
Changing the document " Not Allowed" .
    Document assembly " Not Allowed"
    Page extraction " Not Allowed"
Filling of form fields " Allowed"
    Page exratction " Not Allowed"
    and host of other restrictions.
My question is how will I change this dynamic fillable form to allow all options as "Allowed" as this pdf form has some restrictions.
If all options are allowed like in normal pdf, I am able to add the watermark but when a restiction is placed, the message "You dont have sufficient permissions to perform this task is displayed.
Any help is greatly appreciated as I need to add the watermark as a control for this forms during distribution. If you want me to send the attachment and the message, i would greatly welcome it.
    Many Thanks!
    Lovina

    Hi George,
Yes, the form was created in livecycle designer. So, what can I do to add
the watermark and removed the options of not allowed to allow acrobat to add
    watermark?
    Many Thanks!

  • Bulk security on PDF files.

Hello, I've just edited 100's of PDF's and NOW need to add security aswell. I wish to allow printing and saving as PDF. My concern is that i am having to do every file one at a time and it is taking ages. Is there a way to do many files all at once (as they all share the same password and security settings)
    Thanks in advance.

Ask in the application support areas - this is about the PDF file format itself.

  • Batch secure multiple pdf files

    Hi everyone,
I have around 100 separate 1page pdf files. Each of these files needs to have security applied that ensures that no changes are made, low-res printing is allowed and a password needs to be applied to prevent the security settings being changed.
Since there are so many files, I wondered if someone could tell me if there is a way to batch apply the security settings to all files at once? I'm using Acrobat X on a mac.
    Would really appreciate any advice.
    Thanks in advance.

I just realised that this can be done using actions so no need for any further help.
    Thanks anyway.

  • Completely securing a PDF - no print, copy, email, extract

    Hi All,
I'm trying to attached PDFs to a website but I need to lock them down to read only.
    Restrictions needed when PDF is open;
    1) No Print - I am aware I can set this as part of a policy
    2) No Copy of File i.e. Restrict Save As - HELP!!
    3) No Email from file - HELP!!
    4) Copy parts of the open files - Again, I'm pretty sure this is in the policy screen.
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Tobes,
You've posted your question in the CreatePDF forum, an online service for creating PDFs. However, your question is related to Adobe Acrobat. So I'm moving your question to the Acrobat > Security and Digital Signature forum.

  • Level of security in PDFs?

What level of security is there in PDF files? My company has
asked me to create PDFs with interactive forms that would submit to
either a database or an email address (I'm not sure about this yet
because I don't know what PDFs are capable of submitting TO).
I am familiar with the typical 128 bit encryption SSL on web
pages, but I have no idea what type(s) of security is available in
PDF files. My company wants to have customers download PDFs from
our website, fill them out, and click a submit button to have the
data sent to us. The data would be highly sensitive data like
    names, social sec numbers, etc.
Any thoughts or help are appreciated :)
