Securing SSH

I'm posting this to help others who might not be familiar with securing ssh, something that I can't recommend strongly enough, for any platform (OS X, BSD & other unix variants & offshoots such as linux).
Keep in mind that with OS X Server , ssh is enabled by default and you should secure it sooner rather than later.
I strongly recommend that you use vi (or emacs) as your editor (via the Terminal).
Observe what the existing permissions are and be sure you preserve them.
If you must work in the GUI, then I suggest TextWrangler (or buy their excellent BBEdit software - TextEdit is free)
http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/index.shtml
There are a number of existing tutorials on this subject, but few are specific to OS X.
http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en-us&q=securing+ssh
To start, I recommend you read the following articles for how to setup ssh passwordless public-private key login:
http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=20040816224717742
see also (in this context), _ONLY, "Create authentication keys_" in:
http://www.bombich.com/mactips/rsync.html
Do use DSA keys, not RSA
You can explore Mike Bombich' excellent discussion of limiting ssh commands but please, *ignore that* for now if you're not already comfortable with the material. I'm trying to save you unnecessary pain.
If your server is public-facing, then it will help stem the brunt of any bots knocking at your server.
For changing the port correctly in OS X, see:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050707140439980
I also recommend limiting what IP addresses or address ranges can connect to your (custom) ssh port at the firewall. If you don't have a static IP at your remote location, you can use "whois" in the terminal on your IP address and gather info on the IP ranges your ISP owns. Keep in mind that they may have several other groups of IP addresses, you don't want to lock yourself out inadvertently.
Finally, edit /etc/sshd_config , make sure to back it up first !
So then, edit /etc/sshd_config
IF you use a DSA key-type (and unless you know you need RSA keys for some unlikely reason),
change:
Protocol 1,2
to:
Protocol 2
Look for the line ( _no actual quotation-marks ! _, have to do that to keep this forum from converting the "#" to a number):
"# To disable tunneled clear text passwords, change to no here!"
and set the next two lines to:
PasswordAuthentication no
PermitEmptyPasswords no
You can also add after that:
AllowUsers usershortname
for example (and what I do), where usershortname is the short name of a non-admin account. is Then once you've connected (at that point, securely via ssh) then:
su admin-name
whatever the name of your admin account is.

the tcp-wrappers hosts.allow and .deny is , if I recall correctly, not enabled by default in 10.4
Also *PLEASE NOTE*, to finally, fully disable password logins,
please also change in /etc/ssdh_config
from - again no actual quotation marks:
"#UsePAM yes"
to:
UsePAM no

  • Network security - SSH SSL

I'm part of the IT department for a city, and I've been asked to look into disabling http and telnet access to our hp printers, and enabling SSH and/or SSL access instead. Has anyone managed to do this, or is it a lost cause?
Some of our main printer models:
    LJ 2055
    LJ 3800
    LJ 4000
    LJ 4350
    LJ 5000
    DJ 4500 mfp
Would any of these have SSH or SSL support?
    Thanks!

Our LDAP-server is used to authenticate users (LAN only), but also as an addressbook (LAN only, although exposed through a local web app).
But other services are exposed to the internet: imap, smtp, http, etc. Whenever I need to add a new device (smartphone f.e.), I'm confronted with the setting 'encryption', which has to be left blank for our setup. That's why I have my doubts...
But you seem to find encryption something 'optional' if I understand you completely. So my doubts are probably not warranted. THX for your reply!

  • Java Secure channel for FTP over SSH

Does the Jsch provided by JCRAFT support authentication and authorisation via public key certificates? If yes then is there website which gives me some info on this?
I checked out the site http://www.jcraft.com/jsch/index.html but this does not provide much info on the certificates.
If anyone knows some information regarding this, kindly reply ASAP
    Thanks

One of the examples provided with the ditribution actually generates those keys. I will admit, the documentation for JSch is very thin, but they provide examples for everything with the distribution. If you wish to use a key generated by another program, make sure that the key provided is in OpenSSH format (Putty and Secure SSH formats don't work).

  • Securing the default ssh configuration of OS X Server

I will submit the following as some suggested steps for securing ssh access to your server. Some of the steps involve learning a number of tasks and topics that fall beyond the scope of this one posting (administering a firewall, setting up VPN services & access, etc.).
But I'll post this and others can add to it, and with any luck it can transform into a "sticky" for the benefit of those who need it.
    (As I just posted elsewhere)....
    Securing ssh:
    1) Shut off ssh access ("remote login") completely if that is an option
    1) Shut off root access via ssh entirely
edit /etc/sshd_config and change the section to appear as follows:
    # Authentication:
    PermitRootLogin no
    AllowUsers myserveradmin
where "myserveradmin" is the shortname of a desired user, and should categorically not be "admin" "administrator" "test" or anything else painfully obvious.
    Restart ssh.
    3) Shut off password access via ssh completely. Use access by ssh keys only.
See the tutorial by Mike Bombich (of Apple) here:
    http://www.bombich.com/mactips/rsync.html
starting with "Before you start: Security Briefing"
Or this article at another excellent resource:
    http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=20040816224717742
note the further information about how to limit commands available via ssh.
Having done this, edit /etc/sshd_config and add:
    # To disable tunneled clear text passwords, change to no here!
    PasswordAuthentication no
    PermitEmptyPasswords no
    and restart ssh.
    4) Set the shell ("login shell") for every and any account that does not need shell access to your server, to: None
    5) Limit ssh access at your firewall, to known-viable IP ranges or even specific static IPs.
Better yet, (while still observing the other steps above) don't allow ssh traffic across your firewall, and setup VPN, and then use ssh access via VPN only.
Do all of this at your own "risk" meaning understand the consequences, the first of which will be a server that is more secure in terms of ssh access. This does little to prevent problematic php (phpBB) or other mismanaged or poorly written or unsecured 3rd-party packages and their impact on your server.

I would like to use to "secure" SSH on OS Level the file/data transfer between XI and any third-party system Run OS Command before processing and OS command After processing. right now my XI server installed on iSeries OS.
with ISeries we can't call the Unix commands hope we need to go for AS400 (CL) Programming. If we created the AS400 programm how i can call that in XI.
If any one have idea pls let me know weather it will work or not.

en0 is the ethernet address for the internet connection 10,129,0,x (address from an internet supplier), 192.168.x.x. is my internal lan.
What is the best way to secure the firewall andthe server in the mac server admin console?
In the service-Edit services for... is there any precedence ?
In the service-edit services for, I have the listing: any, 10-net, 192-168-net,192.168.3-net,192.168,4-net, 10.129.0.37 (This is also the order of my ip address groups)
I am using stealth mode, in advanced, but what are the advanced rules that I must apply?

    10.x.x.x is a private/lan rfc-1918 address.
    http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1918.html
What is doing the routing between 10.129.x.x and 192.168.x.x ?
Don't forward any incoming traffic at your Router that you don't want to be dealing with.
Whatever you do, secure ssh properly. In fact, don't forward ssh traffic from your router if you don't need to. Change the port at the router if you need external ssh access. And then only allow ssh via shared key(s)

  • Aaa network access restrictions with secure authen (asa device)

    Hi all,
I've been reading a lot about how to configure the cut-through-proxy to allow certain network traffic only after being authenticated. The procedures seem pretty straightforward when using plain telnet or ftp (works pretty good).
However, doing so securely seems to be a bit more "fuzzy".
I don't like the idea of authenticating users over clear text telnet or ftp, and https has its own issues (weird timeouts that i can't seem to figure out).
Is it not possible to simply log in to the ASA (or whatever) device securely (ssh?), to authenticate and authorize other network traffic?
I see people talking about ssh not being proxy-able. I do not want to "proxy" the ssh connection, i just want to tell the ASA:
"Hey, this is me, allow me this (acl) traffic when i'm coming from this IP address, for X minutes or untill i log off again. Please.".
    Sounds simple to me. :-)
Perhaps i'm looking at the wrong thing? Perhaps i do not need the cut-through-proxy for this?
I've been looking at articles like this:
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/docs/DOC-14842
And some of Cisco's ASA AAA articles, like this:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa82/configuration/guide/access_fwaaa.html
They all pretty much seems to do what i want, except that they seem to want to "proxy" my traffic for some reason, and authenticate me in clear-text.
Do i have any other options? Like logging on directly to the device to do the authentication?
Using fixed or named access lists or even downloadable access lists doesn't really matter, i would just like a secure way of activating those access lists.
I'm currently investigating my options, like using a VPN client or script some acl injection, but that just sounds so disturbing.
    Thanks a lot.
    /Sune T.

I have never done it with Cisco ACS so I can not offer much support on this.
However, I've done it many times on Cisco Freeware TACACS+ and it is very easy.
1- in Cisco Freeware tacacs, include "max-session = 1" under either the user
    profile or group file definition.
2- in the router itself, you need to enable "ip finger". This will allow the
TACACS+ server to querry the router everytime there is a new attempt to loggin.
If you already have a session to the router, TACACS+ server will see this and
reject a new session for that same user. If the login ID is different than what
is already connected to the router, it will then be accepted:
    C7140#who
    Line User Host(s) Idle Location
    0 con 0 idle 11w2d
    * 2 vty 0 cciesec idle 00:00:00 192.168.15.9
Interface User Mode Idle Peer Address
    C7140#
Now if user "cciesec" tries to login again through another session, it will
be rejected by the TACACS server:
    [root@LinuxES-lab1 root]# finger @192.168.15.1
    Line User Host(s) Idle Location
    0 con 0 idle 11w2d
    2 vty 0 cciesec idle 00:04:00 192.168.15.9
    * 3 vty 1 idle 00:00:00 192.168.128.100
Interface User Mode Idle Peer Address
    [root@LinuxES-lab1 root]#
    Easy right?

  • Secure way of logging into a server

I just stumbled across this: Single packet authorization with fwknop
It sounds nice, I'm thinking of implementing it. What do guys think, have you tried it?

I've played with regular port knocking in the past and had no problem with that.  Not worked with SPA specifically, but SPA is just a variant on that, with the crypto making it safer against replay attacks. Extra layers might make you safer at the cost of convenience.  If using SPA, you would need a client to do the crypto knock first before ssh-ing in.  So you would want to keep something with you that could do that if you ever had the urge to ssh.
It would add a layer on top of ssh's own security. Of course, the question is how safe is safe enough? IMO, unless you think you are going to be the specific target of an attacker (ie. running a bank's servers or something high-profile), there's not a whole lot of need. Most random probes on your system would just be script kiddies looking around the whole net for an easy target, not targeting you specifically.  and as fukawi2 said, properly securing SSH itself does provide a great deal of security, especially if you used something like key authentication. But yes it will provide an extra layer and that might help you sleep better at night or something.
So is it fine to use and provide extra security layer? yes, it does that easily.  Is it critical that you implement it? I doubt it. It's really up to you - there is no wrong choice here.

  • SSH file transfer

    Hi all.
I've set up a remote shell to connect to my home computer from the office. I can access and manipulate the files on the remote computer using command line tools, and can even transfer them from one computer to the other using scp. My question is if I am on my work computer (local) and connect to my home computer (remote) with a SSH, as I browse through the files on the home computer can I copy them to my local work computer without having to type in the whole IP addresse etc.
    Thanks,

Etresoft's MacFUSE is one (rather good) idea.
You could write scripts that hardcode the remote IP address into scp commands. I use this trick for copying files to a remote system. The files all get put into my remote Download folder, which I then move around as needed when I'm on that remote system. Not exactly the same as what you want, but the concept is similar.
You could get a free dynamic DNS name from a services such as No-IP.com or DynDNS.org, and then you would not need to bother with the IP address. I use these for my home and my Mom's remote location.
You could use ssh to establish a tunnel to the Apple FileSharing (AFP) port 548 so you can mount the remote file system. I do this when connecting to my Mom's system. I've scripted the task so I do not need to manually type in the long ssh command (ssh -L 12345:localhost:548 remote.system.address). Then Finder -> Go -> Connect to server -> afp://localhost:12345, where the 12345 is the local port number of the ssh tunnel that leads to the remote system's AFP port 548.
The ssh tunnels also all screen sharing (port 5900) over secure ssh connection (ssh -L 54321:localhost:5900 remote.system.address and using vnc://localhost:54321 to connect, where 54321 is the local side of the ssh tunnel that leads to the remote VNC port 5900).
You could use a services such as TeamViewer.com that allows file transfer along with screen sharing.
There are others, some free, so fee based, that offer similar services.

  • How to debug when you can't recreate error consistently

I have a simple illustrator-type application in which I draw rounded rectangles to a JPanel and then the user is able to move them around (the position and repaint is done in via the mouseDragged interface.
Sometimes, the application shuts down when I am dragging a box with this message:
    # An unexpected error has been detected by HotSpot Virtual Machine:
    # EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at pc=0x6d236a0c, pid=3400, tid=2716
    # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (1.5.0_07-b03 mixed mode, sharing)
    # Problematic frame:
    # C [dcpr.dll+0x6a0c]
    # An error report file with more information is saved as hs_err_pid3400.log
    # If you would like to submit a bug report, please visit:
I checked the error report and it suggests the problem is within the PathFiller.WriteAlpha. The entire report is below. The problem I have is that if I restart the application and place boxes in the exact same locations as before, and try moving the one that caused the error, the error is not thrown.
I have no idea how to debug this as I can't even consistently reproduce. I just upgraded to the newest JDK (I think it was 7).
Thanks for any insight and help you can offer.

This is not your bug, it's Sun's. All you can do is to:
    # If you would like to submit a bug report, please visit:
On the other hand, if you cannot afford to wait and just
want to find a quick workaround, you will at least need
to find a way to reproduce the bug with a reasonable
frequency. If you are absolutely unable to reproduce it,
just forget it, but still report it to Sun.

    Hi Vlad, Kalyan
Thanks for the response. Actually i am not planning to configure weblogic SIP... as it may need little insight. I just created domain including everything.
Now i have created a new domain with basic functionality with default configuration. Now everything is working fine. I can see the Admin console as well.
But i have stuck up in running the EM console. Below is the CMD prompt trace.
