You need to go to Verizon.com and login. Once you are logged in, scroll down and on the right you will see a link that says "Manage my broadband essentials and extras" . After clicking on that you will have a list of all your extra purchases on FIOS. Click on the product you want and there will be a link to download it. If you have any troubles with this please send a private message.

  • HT2736 Resetting security and backup email??

I recently got given a iTunes card, I redeemed it and everything but then when I tried to buy something it asked for security questions. I had forgotten these because I haven't used an I tunes card for 2 years. So I went on the suggested website and it said it could send the reset option to my backup email...... I didn't recognise the bit of the address I could see however I still send it, I asked the main people who I could have set it as and they say it's not theirs which means I have no idea who the emails are going to and also I am not using a fifteen pound gift voucher, I created a new ID to see if I could send the voucher over my product to myself but it didn't work because I've redeemed it on the original device so now I'm stuck.
I don't really was to call up apple because it's expensive so please help.thank you !

  • Internet security and backup

Is anyone else being charged $10.00 a month for this "service" that they didnt order? Really gettin sick of verizon sticking these little charges in there for stuff i don't want or need. Can't wait til my contract is up.

^^^ GR8 point MR. Smith6612, When I called recently about a FIOS/INternet and phone deal I was told the 'best discount' was going to cost me over $60 US a month. After a few call backs I was able to get a much better rate with the slowest  FIOS service and the minimal phone plan. (I do not need call back , call forward, call messages  and  windows security - Microsoft Security Essentials, the router firewall set to MAX and windows 7 firewall are all free and do a very good job).

  • Multi-Device Security & Backup Bundle

I currently have the Internet Security Suite/up to 6 computers - with 3 Desktop PC's and 3 Laptops.
Looking at changing to the 'Multi-Device Security & Backup Bundle 50GB' bundle which is same price (at least for 12 months) that has "Unlimited* protection for all your devices"
    But the note says:
*Subject to limitation on reasonable use and purpose of the product.
Does anyone know if this will cover existing 6 PC's and a couple of tablets?
What does Verizon consider as "reasonable use"?
Also is it easy to change the plans? Assuming its the same security software on the PC's.
    Thanks,
    Mark

i can't hook it to my internet i pay for it it is on my bill

I have a 3rd generation iPod Touch and just did the update to IOS 5. Now I can't connect to my Netgear wifi router. My iPhone connects fine along with all of my other laptops etc. I have the router set with WPA-PSK [TKIP] security and an access list. I've confirmed the mac address is included on that list and that the password is correct. Under choses netwrok I select the network and it just goes into a spin. I have tried removing the password and the access list settings and it still will not complete the connection to the router thus no internet access. The routers firmware is also up to date. This thing worked fine before this update and I've already tried to restore from backup. Any ideas or is the wifi nic bad in this thing with the new apple firmware update? Any fix?

Thanks Bob, I don't know why but it all of a sudden worked a few days later. It's a mystery but at least problem solved.

  • After update June 28 of security and Java on 17in mac bk pro laptop cannot startup

After June 28 security and Java updates my 17 in mac book pro will not start up properly..I get a screen with text on the side and a window telling me to press the sart button to shut down and then press again to start up...( a gray panel comes down over the page before the window appears)...I have tried the install disc and done the disc and permissions repair...permissions repair could not repair "System/Library/Core Services/Remote Management ARDAgent/Contents/Mac OS/ARDAgent" a SUID file. What can I do?

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
Try to get into your machine and if you do, the first thing you do is backup your files to a external drive. (not TimeMachine) via regular drag and drop methods.
Disconnect this drive. and all others.
You can then c boot off the installer disk for your OS version and under the Utilities menu is Disk Utility > Repair Disk
Also you can totally reinstall OS X, shouldn't effect your programs or files (but backup all files just in case)
If that don't work, c boot off the installer disk again, this time use Disk Utility to Erase >format HFS+ Journaled with Security option > Zero All Data (will take some time) This will totally wipe the drive of everything and is a last ditch effort.
When it's done quit, and reinstlal OS X.
You'll have to go through the setup and reinstall your programs and files from backup. Secret is use the same user name and drive name as the previous time so your iTunes folder will work without a hitch.
If you restore from TimeMachine, it's possible whatever problem you had can return, but you can try and if it doesn't work, just repeat above without TimeMachine.
Later look at free Carbon Copy Clone your boot drive to a external HFS+ Journaled formatted drive and keep in a safe place, it hold option bootable, great if your hard drive bites it, or TimeMachine gets hosed. TM isn't bootable.

  • HELP -updated security and Quicktime - now one of my harddrives is missing

I did a software update the other day - security, quicktime- Nothing that should be difficult. I shut down my computer and when my husband restarted the computer does not recognise one of my internal harddrives anymore. It's the one I use to store most of my data on (music, etc.)- frustrating.
How do I fix it/restore it without erasing it?
Can I try to repair permissions (would that even work if it doesn't see the drive?), or do I need to put the OS disk in and run disk repair? I really want my computer back and don't want to lose the info on it if I can help it. If the drive is shot, so be it, but I just don't know one way or the other. I figure first step would be to try to get the computer to recognise it right?. When I look at the computer information the drive simply isn't there. Luckily the startup drive and one of the internal harddrives seem fine - it's just the one harddrive that is the issue.
All I can think of that I did of any major consequence other than the updates was to delete Logic and Final Cut from the computer and install Toast 10- but they were on the main bootup drive, so I don't think that would be involved...
Please suggest how to proceed...I don't want to do this wrong...

After repairing permissions a number of times, the drive reappeared and is accessable again.
It appears to not be formatted for OSX anymore, but for OS9. As I still have an old OS9 partition on my computer I can access it no problelm. When I get time and backup my data to an external HD I will wipe it all clean and reinstall the OSX and then all will be squeaky clean.
Luckily it was jsut a permissions issue. Whew!

  • HT5457 How to get ITunes Store to open so that I can update purchased APPS and backup phone to ICLOUD?

I have been attempting to get the ITunes Store to open so that I can update my purchased Apps and backup to ICloud for severAuthorize this Toshiba Laptop PC running Microsoft 32 bit Vista.

    Hello, mitcheb.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
The applications that were downloaded are licensed to this old Apple ID.  Any updates that need to be processed for these apps will need to be processed using this Apple ID password.  You cant attempt to reset that password for the Apple ID via the steps in the first article below.  If you need assistance with this, see the second attached article.  You can also delete the applications in question and download them again with your new Apple ID.  However, this will cause any application data in those applications to be deleted and you may be charged if these are paid for applications.

  • My contacts and whats app messages are shown on my sister's iphone! How can I secure my iphone and have a high level of security and privacy! Her Contacts are shown in my iphone as well!!

I have and iphone 6 with iOS 8.1. My contacts and whats app messages are shown on my sister's iphone! She have iPhone 6 and and iOS as well. How can I secure my iphone and have a high level of security and privacy! Her Contacts are shown in my iphone as well! Setting in mac and iphone are a bit presice and sensitive. Is there any way to solve my issue and increase the safety, security and privacy in my iPhone and its data?

Your problem is that she used your icloud ID to connect to icloud and thus had all your data synced to her device.  Contacts are not saved in a backup to icloud, since they are stored independently in the Contacts section of icloud.  If someone deletes them, they are gone.  If you had them on the PC would they be available in some backup you frequently make of the PC?

  • My 'Security and Privacy' settings won't open

Ever since installing OS X Mountain Lion, when I click on 'Security and Privacy' under 'Settings,' it just continues to say 'Loading Security & Privacy' but nothing loads. I cannot get into it at all (screen shot below)...
Does anyone have any ideas on what is going on?

I called Apple and they had me re-install Mountain Lion. As of now, the 'Security and Privacy' setting is working again, but I did check out the console like you advised. Here is what was there after I cleared the display and went back in again:

  • Patching and backup process advice

    Hello all ,
I have solaris 8 and I had a few questions about patching and backup.
    1. Monthly I download the Sun 'Recommended and Security patchset", I then unzip and run patch_add.
When I review the terminal output while this is running I get quite a few :"unable to install patch exit code 8".
    Should I be getting this?
Is there another way of applying patches(other than individually)?
    2. What are good backup practices? Copy /etc and /var directories to a raid? Or is there a Sun tool for backups?
    Thanks for any advice!

I believe this is a list of exit codes for patches. You'll most likely see a lot of return code 8 and 2. Not typically an issue.
    # Exit Codes:
    # 0 No error
    # 1 Usage error
    # 2 Attempt to apply a patch that's already been applied
    # 3 Effective UID is not root
    # 4 Attempt to save original files failed
    # 5 pkgadd failed
    # 6 Patch is obsoleted
    # 7 Invalid package directory
    # 8 Attempting to patch a package that is not installed
    # 9 Cannot access /usr/sbin/pkgadd (client problem)
    # 10 Package validation errors
    # 11 Error adding patch to root template
    # 12 Patch script terminated due to signal
    # 13 Symbolic link included in patch
    # 14 NOT USED
    # 15 The prepatch script had a return code other than 0.
    # 16 The postpatch script had a return code other than 0.
    # 17 Mismatch of the -d option between a previous patch
    # install and the current one.
    # 18 Not enough space in the file systems that are targets
    # of the patch.
    # 19 $SOFTINFO/INST_RELEASE file not found
    # 20 A direct instance patch was required but not found
    # 21 The required patches have not been installed on the manager
    # 22 A progressive instance patch was required but not found
    # 23 A restricted patch is already applied to the package
    # 24 An incompatible patch is applied
    # 25 A required patch is not applied
    # 26 The user specified backout data can't be found
    # 27 The relative directory supplied can't be found
    # 28 A pkginfo file is corrupt or missing
    # 29 Bad patch ID format
    # 30 Dryrun failure(s)
    # 31 Path given for -C option is invalid
    # 32 Must be running Solaris 2.6 or greater
    # 33 Bad formatted patch file or patch file not found
    # 34 The appropriate kernel jumbo patch needs to be installed
Back up your system before adding any patches (ufsdump). It's recommended that these patches are added in run level one.
There should be a script called something like "install_cluster" command in the 8_Recommended directory that you can use to add the patches.
By default the patches create backout info in /var, but I usually disable this (yeah, livin' on the edge) with the "-nosave" option.

  • 2TB Iomega EZ Media and Backup NAS connection failure.

    Hi,
Can someone please explain to me why my 2TB Iomega EZ Media and Backup with the newest firmware installed often suddenly cannot be approached anymore whatever I try. My desktop (W8.0) says “Cannot find networkpath “. Code: 0x80070035. IE. says “Cannot find server”. White and blue leds are on.
And after a few hours or sometimes days it reconnects again all by itself. What can I do, suggestions welcome.
    Thanks,
    Wil

Hi Andrew, Thank you for your response.
Does anybody else have access to the device that might be trying to log in? Have you enabled security on the device? If not, I would recommend enabling security and make sure that your device is secure by reading the following support article: Security Best Practices Guidelines
Nobody else has acces to the device. Security is enabled.
You might want to set up a static IP address as well: Configuring a static IP address
A static Ip address has been set up after installation, otherwise it won`t function.
If the problem persists, you can try to reset the network and user settings with the reset button on the back of the device. Press and hold the reset button for four seconds. Using the device reset button
    This I will try.
    OR
Reset the entire device using the Factory Reset from the web interface. This will erase all of your data, however.
This is only a last resort as the device is full with data.
You can also contact technical support to troubleshoot the issue further since you are still covered by the warranty.
This I will do if the problem persists.
Thanks a lot for your advice.
    Wil

  • Definitive Storage and Backup solution

Hello, I'm looking for a definitive Storage and Backup solution.
    So far I've been looking on to Drobo 5D or N, LaCie 5big Thunderbolt™ 2, or LaCie 2big Thunderbolt™ 2.
Networking would be a plus but not a must. I'm open for other suggestions and also wonder if these systems can be considered backup since they are ready for single or double disks failures.
    Thanks.

Most storage experts agree on the Hitachi 2.5"
Hitachi is the winner in hard drive reliability survey:
Hitachi manufacturers the safest and most reliable hard drives, according to the Storelab study. Of the hundreds of Hitachi hard drives received, not a single one had failed due to manufacturing or design errors. Adding the highest average lifespans and the best relationship between failures and market share, Hitachi can be regarded as the winner.
Data Storage Platforms; their Drawbacks & Advantages
#1. Time Machine / Time Capsule
    Drawbacks:
    1. Time Machine is not bootable, if your internal drive fails, you cannot access files or boot from TM directly from the dead computer.
OS X Lion, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks include OS X Recovery. This feature includes all of the tools you need to reinstall OS X, repair your disk, and even restore from a Time Machine
"you can't boot directly from your Time Machine backups"
    2. Time machine is controlled by complex software, and while you can delve into the TM backup database for specific file(s) extraction, this is not ideal or desirable.
    3. Time machine can and does have the potential for many error codes in which data corruption can occur and your important backup files may not be saved correctly, at all, or even damaged. This extra link of failure in placing software between your data and its recovery is a point of risk and failure. A HD clone is not subject to these errors.
    4. Time machine mirrors your internal HD, in which cases of data corruption, this corruption can immediately spread to the backup as the two are linked. TM is perpetually connected (or often) to your computer, and corruption spread to corruption, without isolation, which TM lacks (usually), migrating errors or corruption is either automatic or extremely easy to unwittingly do.
    5. Time Machine does not keep endless copies of changed or deleted data, and you are often not notified when it deletes them; likewise you may accidently delete files off your computer and this accident is mirrored on TM.
    6. Restoring from TM is quite time intensive.
    7. TM is a backup and not a data archive, and therefore by definition a low-level security of vital/important data.
    8. TM working premise is a “black box” backup of OS, APPS, settings, and vital data that nearly 100% of users never verify until an emergency hits or their computers internal SSD or HD that is corrupt or dead and this is an extremely bad working premise on vital data.
    9. Given that data created and stored is growing exponentially, the fact that TM operates as a “store-it-all” backup nexus makes TM inherently incapable to easily backup massive amounts of data, nor is doing so a good idea.
    10. TM working premise is a backup of a users system and active working data, and NOT massive amounts of static data, yet most users never take this into consideration, making TM a high-risk locus of data “bloat”.
    11. In the case of Time Capsule, wifi data storage is a less than ideal premise given possible wireless data corruption.
    12. TM like all HD-based data is subject to ferromagnetic and mechanical failure.
    13. *Level-1 security of your vital data.
    Advantages:
    1. TM is very easy to use either in automatic mode or in 1-click backups.
    2. TM is a perfect novice level simplex backup single-layer security save against internal HD failure or corruption.
    3. TM can easily provide a seamless no-gap policy of active data that is often not easily capable in HD clones or HD archives (only if the user is lazy is making data saves).
    #2. HD archives
    Drawbacks:
    1. Like all HD-based data is subject to ferromagnetic and mechanical failure.
    2. Unless the user ritually copies working active data to HD external archives, then there is a time-gap of potential missing data; as such users must be proactive in archiving data that is being worked on or recently saved or created.
    Advantages:
    1. Fills the gap left in a week or 2-week-old HD clone, as an example.
    2. Simplex no-software data storage that is isolated and autonomous from the computer (in most cases).
    3. HD archives are the best idealized storage source for storing huge and multi-terabytes of data.
    4. Best-idealized 1st platform redundancy for data protection.
    5. *Perfect primary tier and level-2 security of your vital data.
#3. HD clones (see below for full advantages / drawbacks)
    Drawbacks:
    1. HD clones can be incrementally updated to hourly or daily, however this is time consuming and HD clones are, often, a week or more old, in which case data between today and the most fresh HD clone can and would be lost (however this gap is filled by use of HD archives listed above or by a TM backup).
    2. Like all HD-based data is subject to ferromagnetic and mechanical failure.
    Advantages:
    1. HD clones are the best, quickest way to get back to 100% full operation in mere seconds.
    2. Once a HD clone is created, the creation software (Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper) is no longer needed whatsoever, and unlike TM, which requires complex software for its operational transference of data, a HD clone is its own bootable entity.
    3. HD clones are unconnected and isolated from recent corruption.
    4. HD clones allow a “portable copy” of your computer that you can likewise connect to another same Mac and have all your APPS and data at hand, which is extremely useful.
    5. Rather than, as many users do, thinking of a HD clone as a “complimentary backup” to the use of TM, a HD clone is superior to TM both in ease of returning to 100% quickly, and its autonomous nature; while each has its place, TM can and does fill the gap in, say, a 2 week old clone. As an analogy, the HD clone itself is the brick wall of protection, whereas TM can be thought of as the mortar, which will fill any cracks in data on a week, 2-week, or 1-month old HD clone.
    6. Best-idealized 2nd platform redundancy for data protection, and 1st level for system restore of your computers internal HD. (Time machine being 2nd level for system restore of the computer’s internal HD).
    7. *Level-2 security of your vital data.
    HD cloning software options:
    1. SuperDuper HD cloning software APP (free)
    2. Carbon Copy Cloner APP (will copy the recovery partition as well)
    3. Disk utility HD bootable clone.
    #4. Online archives
    Drawbacks:
    1. Subject to server failure or due to non-payment of your hosting account, it can be suspended.
    2. Subject, due to lack of security on your part, to being attacked and hacked/erased.
    Advantages:
    1. In case of house fire, etc. your data is safe.
    2. In travels, and propagating files to friends and likewise, a mere link by email is all that is needed and no large media needs to be sent across the net.
    3. Online archives are the perfect and best-idealized 3rd platform redundancy for data protection.
    4. Supremely useful in data isolation from backups and local archives in being online and offsite for long-distance security in isolation.
    5. *Level-1.5 security of your vital data.
    #5. DVD professional archival media
    Drawbacks:
    1. DVD single-layer disks are limited to 4.7Gigabytes of data.
    2. DVD media are, given rough handling, prone to scratches and light-degradation if not stored correctly.
    Advantages:
    1. Archival DVD professional blank media is rated for in excess of 100+ years.
    2. DVD is not subject to mechanical breakdown.
    3. DVD archival media is not subject to ferromagnetic degradation.
    4. DVD archival media correctly sleeved and stored is currently a supreme storage method of archiving vital data.
    5. DVD media is once written and therefore free of data corruption if the write is correct.
    6. DVD media is the perfect ideal for “freezing” and isolating old copies of data for reference in case newer generations of data become corrupted and an older copy is needed to revert to.
    7. Best-idealized 4th platform redundancy for data protection.
    8. *Level-3 (highest) security of your vital data.
[*Level-4 data security under development as once-written metallic plates and synthetic sapphire and likewise ultra-long-term data storage]
    #6. Cloud based storage
    Drawbacks:
    1. Cloud storage can only be quasi-possessed.
    2. No genuine true security and privacy of data.
    3. Should never be considered for vital data storage or especially long-term.
    4. *Level-0 security of your vital data.
    Advantages:
    1. Quick, easy and cheap storage location for simplex files for transfer to keep on hand and yet off the computer.
    2. Easy source for small-file data sharing.
#7. Network attached storage (NAS) and JBOD storage
    Drawbacks:
    1. Subject to RAID failure and mass data corruption.
    2. Expensive to set up initially.
    3. Can be slower than USB, especially over WiFi.
    4. Mechanically identical to USB HD backup in failure potential, higher failure however due to RAID and proprietary NAS enclosure failure.
    Advantages:
    1. Multiple computer access.
    2. Always on and available.
    3. Often has extensive media and application server functionality.
    4. Massive capacity (also its drawback) with multi-bay NAS, perfect for full system backups on a larger scale.
    5. *Level-2 security of your vital data.
JBOD (just a bunch of disks / drives) storage
Identical to NAS in form factor except drives are not networked or in any RAID array, rather best thought of as a single USB feed to multiple independent drives in a single powered large enclosure. Generally meaning a non-RAID architecture.
    Drawbacks:
    1. Subject to HD failure but not RAID failure and mass data corruption.
    Advantages:
    1. Simplex multi-drive independent setup for mass data storage.
    2. Very inexpensive dual purpose HD storage / access point.
    3. *Level-2 security of your vital data.
Bare hard drives and docks. The most reliable and cheapest method of hard drive data storage, archives, and redundancies
The best method for your data archives and redundancies, which is also the least expensive, the most reliable, and the most compact option is the purchase of naked hard drives and at least one USB 3.0 HD dock ($40 roughly).
While regarding Time Machine and your Macbook or desktop, your primary backup is best saved to a conventional USB (or Firewire / thunderbolt) hard drive inside an enclosure, the most important part of your data protection begins after your 1st / primary Time Machine / backup; and these are your secondary (most important) data storage devices, archives and their redundancies.
However bare hard drives and docks (below) also work perfectly as a Time Machine backup, this is for home use, since the docking station is certainly not very portable as a notebook Time Machine backup device should be; nor should bare HD be packed around with a notebook, rather remain at home or office.
Six terabytes of 2.5" HD pictured below in a very compact space.
Bare hard drives and docks have the lowest cost, the highest reliability, and take up the smallest storage space
    Drawbacks:
    1. Care and knowledge in general handling of naked hard drives (how not to shock a bare HD, and how to hold them properly). Not a genuine drawback.
    Advantages:
    1. By far the least expensive method of mass HD storage on a personal basis. Highest quality naked HD can be purchased in bulk very cheap.
    2. Eliminates the horrible failure point of SATA bridges and interfaces between external drives and the computer.
    3. Per square foot you can store more terabytes of data this way than any other.
    4. Fast, easy, no fuss and most simplex method of data storage on hard drives.
Time Machine is a system  backup, not a data backup
Important data you “don’t dare lose” should not be considered ultimately safe, or ideally stored (at the very least not as sole copy of same) on your Time Machine backup. Hourly and daily fluctuations of your system OS, applications, and software updates is the perfect focus for the simple user to conduct ‘click it and forget it’ backups of the entire system and files on the Macbook HD.
Bootable clones are the choice of professionals and others in that Time Machine cannot be booted from and requires a working HD to retrieve data from (meaning another computer). Your vital data needs to be and should be ‘frozen’ on some form of media storage, either in a clone, as an archived HD containing important files, or on DVD blank archival media.
A file that is backed up to Time Machine is unsafe in that if that file is deleted off the computer by accident or lost otherwise, that file will likewise vanish from Time Machine as it reflects changes on the internal computer HD/SSD.

  • Mac security and maintenance advice needed.

can someone please advice me how to keep my mac secured and well maintained. i mean the macbook hardware as well as software.
any antispyware or antivirus i should get for mac? would u recommend one? and which one? also suggest me some free alternatives.
on pcs putting realtime scanners would slow down the system. i hope thats not the case in mac.
also, any maintenance software like a defragmenter? i have been told macs dont need a defrag program. recently a whole lot of permissions went bad when i did a 'verify permissions' check.
also, can someone tell me how often one should calibrate the battery?

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that presently AppleJack is not compatible with Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

Do You Need Anti-Virus Protection for Your Mac?
According to Rich Mogull's article, Should Mac Users Run Antivirus Software?,
"The reality is that today the Mac platform is relatively safe. There are hundreds of thousands of viruses and other malicious software programs floating around for Windows, but less than 200 are known to target the Mac, and many of those are aimed at versions of the Mac OS prior to Mac OS X (and thus have no effect on a modern Mac).
It's not that Mac OS X is inherently more secure against viruses than current versions of Windows (although it was clearly more secure than Windows prior to XP SP2); the numerous vulnerabilities reported and patched in recent years are just as exploitable as their Windows equivalents. But most security experts agree that malicious software these days is driven by financial incentives, and it's far more profitable to target the most dominant platform."
Mr. Mogull is a computer security expert. I recommend reading the entire article as it is quite informative.

Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
would keeping the charger plugged in extend battery life?
It will neither hurt nor improve battery life. The life of the battery is determined by the number of full charge cycles - about 500 is the average life. If you use the computer mostly in a location with access to an AC outlet then you should use the AC adapter rather than run on the battery.
