Security at airports

should i worry about the macbook going through the things that bags go through and should i try to walk through with it?

Just like any other laptop, if you're carrying it on, you'll have to take it out of the bag, and put it in its own little tray. It won't hurt it. I travel all the time, and I have more trouble with my credit cards going through the X-ray than my computers (or my iPods, since you so aptly pointed out is the current forum grin)

Very secure, however, two things to consider here:
o Your local wireless network, and
o Your Internet connection between the AirPort and the Bank's website
To protect the first, use WPA Personal or WPA2 Personal encryption on your AirPort-provided wireless network. For the latter, make sure you connect to a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)-protected website. These websites typically have a web address that starts with "https."

  • New Security Update - Airport no longer works. Help ?

    Hey all
this morning I ran various software updates: itunes, safari and the new security update. From that moment onwards, I cannot access the internet using my MacBook (about a year old, running Mac OS X 10.4.11). I normally use Firefox to access the net, but neither that nor Safari work now.
I know my internet works as I can access it wirelessly using my work laptop and my desktop.
But when I try to access my broadband using my macbook:
    a) the "waves" on the airport all remain light-shaded
    b) I receive an error message saying " There was an error joining the Airport network 'Zyxel' " (the router is zyxel).
If anyone has any thoughts on how to reset the connnection back to how it was, I'd be EXTREMELY grateful.
    thanks
    B

Having the same problem, but only with my Mac. PC and iPhone continue to work fine. Must be security update related. Is there a way to uninstall the security update?

  • Can't set up security for Airport Express?

Hello, we are tearing our hair out trying to set up Airport Express.
We have installed and are using the Airport Utility. We plug in the AX and it is a slow flash amber. It s being registered by our mac so we join the default "Apple Network XXX" then open Airport Utility. Checking the base station status it lists 4 items that need attention, we can work thru all of them but keep getting stuck on "Wireless Security".
We get to the point where it says select "WPA2" or "no security", we select WPA2, hit continue it then gives us the message "wireless network name is required to continue" but there is no where to select a name or enter one, the base station is also selected in the LH panel? We can't get past this point.
We have also previously in other screens already put in a password for the base station and again for the airport express - is this a 3rd password?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks! - Danielle

Danielle, welcome to the discussion area!
Try the following: Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab just below the row of icons to assign a name to your device, a device password (write that down) and adjust time settings as needed.
Click the Wireless tab and work your way down the page
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
wireless Network Name = Your choice
Check mark next to "Allow to be extended"
Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) is a good choice
    Radio Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal
Wireless Password = backspace to clear out anything here and re-enter your desired password
Confirm Password = Same as above
Click Update to save your settings. See if that will help.

  • How do I setup a secure wireless AirPort network that allows internet shari

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to setup internet sharing over a wireless Airport network between my flatmate's iMac and my G4 Powerbook. We both have Norton Confidential installed, which includes a Firewall feature, which may be making this more difficult.
I thought I understood the basics of setting up secure Airport network, and the basics of Internet sharing. But with all the variations I've tried, I've only ever managed to create a secure network that won't share internet, or a network that shares internet but doesn't seem to be password protected. I never seem to get all three, and I can't figure out why.
From startup/login on both machines, what are the steps I need to follow?
    Many thanks,
    Andrew

You enable wireless security on the base station, by using the AirPort Utility. You basically have four choices: None, WEP, WPA, or WPA2. (Note: These are in order of least to most security.)
    Here are the basic steps:
AirPort Extreme Base Station Setup (AEBSn) - Wireless Encryption
    Setup the AEBSn
Either connect to the AEBSn's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN ports of the AEBSn, and then, using the AirPort Utility in Manual Mode, check these settings:
    AirPort - Wireless
    o Wireless Security: <None | WEP (Transitional Security Network) | <b>WPA/WPA2 Personal | WPA2 Personal>
    o Wireless Password: <enter your desired password>
    o Verify Password: <reenter your desired password>

  • Security Update - Airport won´t work any more

    Hi there,
I just installed todays security update, everthing went fine, but all of a sudden I can´t access the internet anymore via airport. I didn´t change any settings and tried two networks that usually work. Just prior to the update, everything was ok. Now I can´t access the internet, but I can connect to my network and e.g. browse other computers in my network... Internet by ethernet cable works fine. Any suggestions?!

I am having this same problem on my wife's old PB G4 12", however the problem has been intermittent since installing leopard on launch day. I have tracked it down to the leopard firewall which will only allow internet access if I completely turn off the firewall. This is fine when she is at home and behind out home AEBS firewall, but when she ventures out to starbucks having the firewall off is not acceptable. In short, try turning off your firewall and see if you can connect.

  • Security update/Airport update on C2D - Wireless access down, timing out

Was working fine yesterday, log shows the updates happened on Sunday, but I probably didn't actually reboot my machine since then, rebooted my machine last night, and since then have not been able to access my wireless DSL (WPA). Worked fine yesterday. Windows machines on network still work fine. I rebooted the router, and it still works fine on Windows. The problem is that the machine sees the network but the logs show the connection is timing out. This was not happening yesterday. What the heck is going on? I don't run Parallels, so that update isn't it.
Anyone have any idea of how I can:
    1. Make sense of logs on the Mac to help me troubleshoot this?
    2. Back it out the security updates and the airport update?
    3. Determine if other updates happened yesterday that were "silent installs" that I might back out?
Thanks in advance. Luckily I have other non Mac OS machines to fall back on. This is the first update in over a year where I've had total network access failure with the Mac after an install.

  • How really secure is Airport Extreme?

Basically, I want to know just how secure one can make the Airport Extreme?  People have been warning me that NO wifi connection can be made safe and that the password really does little or no good against capable hackers. MAC addresses can be extracted apparently.  Can some expert comment, and also tell me if some software addition can help?
    Thanks,
    John Learned

The strongest form of security that you can choose for home use is WPA2 Personal.
There are several conflicting opinions about whether this type of network can be cracked using very sophisticated tools in weeks or months.
I doubt that even the most dedicated hacker would be willing to park his van out on the street near your home for this time duration....but suppose that anything is possible.
Hackers like easy targets in crowded apartment and condo type areas, so unless you are convinced that the bad guys have already singled you out as a target, you have little to worry about.
You may have heard about using a "Closed Network" or MAC Access Control to help protect the network. There are free tools available on the Internet that will reveal a closed network in a few seconds, and pick off the MAC addresses of devices in a few minutes, so neither of these things will provide much protection for your network.
While most users want their wireless routers to provide as much signal power as possible, you might ask yourself if you really do need to "see" your wireless signal out in the street, or up and down the street.  Cutting back on the broadcast power on the router might be something to consider.

  • Security of AirPort Utility

I would like to know what protection is in place for administrative access to the AirPort via LAN connection. Does the app - Mac and Windows versions - encrypt the connection over port 5353?
I can't seem to find any documentation on this.
    Hoping someone can help :-)

Is there a method available for administrative access that does allow for encrypted credential transmission?
    No
is there no way to save the running configuration to the start-up to secure against the reset problem?
No, but it is possible to save the configuration file in AirPort Utility to a location of your choice by Exporting the file, then Importing it at a future time.
This would save having to enter all of the configuration settings again manually, if someone had reset the AirPort router back to factory default settings.

  • Internet Security using Airport

Just bought a Philips Wifi to use with my Powerbook AND my PC.
Installed everything fine using the Philips Wifi router and all is well.
My question is this - i configured a password (on my powerbook only) but i never get asked for any security each time i log in. Does this mean that my network is always open - meaning that next door (i live in a city) can access my powerbook and confidential stuff..? How do i address this..?
Also my PC just logs in to the network automatically - surely both systems should ask for passwords no..? And does the same password apply to both mac and PC as the router stores this no..?
Please help as i don't particularly trust my neighbours..!

Rereading your post it sounds looks like you entered a password for your OS X on your Mac. That password has nothing to do with the wireless network.
You will need to access the configuration page of your wireless router and enable wireless encryption (WPA or WEP). You will need to enter a password to be used with that encryption. You will need to enter that password once on your PC and once on your Mac the first time each accesses the wireless network.
Then your wireless network will be secure.

  • Adobe Lightroom3 won't print after Security and Airport updates.

    10.6.7
    8gb Mac Mini intel...
using epson 2400 and other printers, the print job does not show up in the printer que- printers work in other apps like photoshop....
deleted and added the 2400 to the printer and fax in system prefs....

Thanks, but I found the problem, silly - I must have been printing a multipage photo set and I set the page to 7 to 7, when I changed the page to all, it printed.
    Thanks all for the responses.

  • Security Update + AirPort Extreme Update = busted Mac

So Riquez, troubless are bad, but I think I have it worse. My days old MacBook Pro showed these updates for installing, and I breezily said OK. Now my lovely new computer won't let me log in. I get the login screen fine,, but when I put in either of the two accounts' info, I go to a black screen. At first, the screen filled several times over with stuff I don't remember, but that seemed to have to do with networking and said things like "file not found." After a bit the black screen would be replaced by a blue screen. I shut down and tried again. Then (perhaps the 3rd restart after the software update) there was just one line telling about a crash reported in a log at /Library/Logs/crashreports/SecurityAgent.crash.log. This followed a login prompt. Now, a couple of restarts later all I get is the login prompt. I can login and get command line access to the computer. Should I be happy about this?
I have tried using applejack, a 3rd party utility, to fix things, and the disk utility on the Apple Install CD says everything is A-OK. I was able to use the Terminal app on the install CD to view the crash log, but it doesn't tell me anything at all. (Hint: the unix "more" command is available at /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD//usr/bin/more.)
So, anybody got ideas on this one?

  • Possible 10.6 Internet Solution with Airport using WPA2 Security.

Go to System Preferences, Network, Airport, Advanced, TCP/IP, Click on Renew DHCP Lease. This seems to work for WPA2 security in Airport utilities. Try this and let me know if this works for you?

I forgot to mention to disconnect your Airport for 30 seconds before you renew DHCP Lease. This seems to be working for me. This also seems to clear-up wireless printing problems with HP wireless printers.

  • Airport Extreme + Security camera

    Hi,
Need a bit to help. I purchased a DCS-2121 D-Link home security camera with the intention to set it up and allow it to record images when triggered by its motion detection.
    Hardware:
    DCS-2121 D-Link home security camera
Airport Base Station (white dome version)
    Virgin Broadband
    20' iMac (Intel)
    After quite a struggle, I eventually got the camera to work wirelessly and was able to view the camera from most web browsers (i was quite pleased with myself). I then wanted to record the images, the camera setup gave me two options;
Record to an SD Card (slot in side of camera), or
(ii) Record to a Samba Network Drive
The easiest option, I thought, was the SD card option. After checking the boxes on the setup menu for this option and putting the sd card in the camera, I was quite disappointed that no images were stored on the sd card after a days worth of recording. Any thoughts?
I then progressed onto the second option for recording, "Samba Network Drive". This started to feel a bit out of my knowledge range but I gave it a go. The setup menu asked for a USERNAME, PASSWORD, SERVER and SHARD FOLDER. This is where I got confused! What is required to get this recording to a folder?
Ideally, could a memory stick be placed in the spare usb port in the Airport Base Station and record the images onto it? This option would negate for a computer to be left on if recording via the Samba method.
    I would appreciate anybody's advice.
    Thanks,
    Robert

SMB is basically windows file sharing. You'll need to enable this on your mac in system preferencess/sharing. See this for more info:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1812
I'm pretty sure airport disks are shared via SMB by default in "WORKGROUP" (it's been a while). Though memory sticks don't always work well with airport base stations.
    For the other information:
Username: Username of your mac user account if accessing the computer, not sure what goes here if you're sharing via airport.
Password: The appropriate account password, or the airport disk password.
Server: The computer name or airport name. I don't think SMB uses spaces, so I'm pretty sure it translates names like "Mac Mini" into "Mac-Mini"
Shared folder: The name of the folder being shared
If you've got a windows computer, this can be tested out pretty easily by going through it's network places and into Workgroup to see if everything is shared properly.

  • Airport Express Router-How to secure it without airport utility

Need help securing my airport express wireless router. I don't have the airport utility. Is there a way to secure the router without it?

Sorry, but no. You will not be able to configure the AirPort without the AirPort Utility. Unlike other routers, the AirPorts do NOT have a web-based administration interface.
You can download a copy of the AirPort Utility directly from Apple Support here.
