Security breach MacBook pro O S X 10.6.8

I started having issues the other day with messages popping up saying that my computer security was compromised and to call a phone number and they tried to sell me some fix and that I have been compromised and my computer information has been taken by others. Now the messages just pop up and new screens come up on their own. What do I do are my options to only take into Apple genius bar or cn i somehow fix online? thanks

The security on your Mac has not been breached.
It is a scam. Don't call the phone number they will steal your ID only.
Shut down Safari.
Restart with Shift key depressed.
If that doesn't work shut down Safari and disconnect Mac from network  then restart Safari.

  • Data security on Macbook Pro 13.3 2.26gHtz

    Hi Experts,
I made the recent switch from Windozzz to Macbook Pro and I am loving it every bit although I am totally new to the OS. I have some basic questions.
    1. How do we secure our data in Mac. I the sense, lets say i have 100 images and some files. There is something called as encription under Security. I enabled that, set a master password. My question is that lets say for some reason, I have to take the laptop to the service center and leave it there, will they be able to view all my personal files? Is there a way to secure our data so that the service people cannot view them? Or is that functionality not available on Mac OS.
    2. I noticed a significant difference in colors if I use the color RGB. The web images look fine if I use sRGB. IS that the common practice for other users as well? The colorRGB looks too yellow and grainy.
    thanks in advance!
    Cheers,
    Sunil

Create an encrypted disk image, and store your secure files there. Those are encrypted with 256-bit AES (theoretically unbreakable, at least for now).
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1578
(Note - be sure to UNcheck the box to store the password in the keychain, and then never forget that password, or the data are gone).
For the internal display, you should use the Color LCD display profile (the only one that shows up if you check the box to 'Show profiles for this display only'. Using a 'canned' profile for another type of monitor will generally not give good results. Alternatively, click the Calibrate button and customize your calibration.

  • Mac defender security update, macbook pro no longer boots up

I applied the security update and then tried to reboot my macbook pro.  Black screen, doesn't reboot.  I tried to start up in single user mode, reset the PRAM ... and nothing.  My macbook pro is now a brick.  Wow.  Good thing I applied a security update for something I would never be stupid enough to click on in the first place.
    Any help would be appreciated...

    Greetings,
The security update is software only.  It has no impact on the hardware of the computer.
Do you get a boot chime at startup?
Do you hear / feel fan movement or any other evidence of activity from within the case of the computer?
Reset the SMC and then test: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Try plugging the AC Adapter (3-prong not the 2-prong) into a different power outlet.
Try running the computer with the battery out if your model allows removal of the battery.
If the issue persists after you follow the above steps, you may wish to make an appointment with a Mac Genius at an Apple store, contact AppleCare via phone, or contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider for assistance.

  • How do I secure erase macbook pro 2012 retina for resale

How do I secure/erase and set to factory settings 15" Macbook Pro 2012 retina) for resale?

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
Be sure you disable or turn off iCloud. Deauthorize the computer in iTunes. Remove any Firmware Passwords you may have configured. Turn off FileVault if enabled.
What to do with iCloud before selling your computer

  • Erase Data Securely from MacBook Pro

I have a summer 2009 model MacBook Pro that I want to sell. How do I securely erase all personal data from the MacBook Pro?

Here's a link with a lot of good info on preparing a Mac for sale:

Don't forget to deauthorize the computer from iTunes if you have an iTunes account.

    No.

  • Network Security on Macbook Pro, Mountain Lion

Since I upgraded to WPA2 Security, my Network Name in System Preferences does not show a Security Lock anymore. Every other Name in the Listing of Network Names has a Security Lock. I was told that the lock does not always show next to the Network Name even if the Network is secure. Can I trust this or do I have to change my router? Thanks for a reply.

IF you really enabled WPA2 at your router than the connection is secured with that.  So must be a bug with the MAC software.

  • Problems since last security update (macbook pro)

    Hi,
I ran the security update. Since then I got the following problems:
    - wont wake up after sleep, only pushing the start button for a few secs will restart the system.
    - mail crashes, by now and then
    please any clues.
    Tineke

Odd that you're running 10.4.2 and you installed the security update. Did you manually install it or was it installed using Software Update? Are you running 10.4.2 or 10.4.8? If you are running 10.4.8 try downloading the combo updater and run that. Do repair permissions before and after.

  • Antivirus and Internet Security for Macbook Pro

I see adds for software like Mac Cleaner all over the place.  Should I have a Antivirus program on my Mac.  I know it is neccessary on PC based equipment but I am not sure if I need it for Mac OS.  Can someone help or offer a suggestion?

Mac OS X versions 10.6.7 and later have built-in detection of known Mac malware in downloaded files. The recognition database is automatically updated once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders. In most cases, there’s no benefit from any other automated protection against malware.
The most effective defense against malware is your own intelligence. All known malware on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of Mac OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of trojans, which can only work if the victim is duped into running them. If you're smarter than the malware attacker thinks you are, you won't be duped. That means, primarily, that you never install software from an untrustworthy source. How do you know a source is untrustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown site, merely in order to use the site, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim.
“Cracked” versions of commercial software downloaded from a bittorrent are likely to be infected.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. No intermediary is acceptable.
Disable Java (not JavaScript) in your web browser(s). Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This setting is mandatory in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier, because Java in those versions has bugs that make it unsafe to use on the Internet. Those bugs will probably never be fixed, because those older operating systems are no longer being maintained by Apple. Migrate to a newer version of the Mac OS as soon as you can.
Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can reasonably be.
Never install any commercial "anti-virus" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use the free software ClamXav — nothing else.

  • Securing My MacBook

I have put a password on my mac
    I Turned on File Vault
I Also put a Firmware Password and I Put A Lockscreen Message with my info.
Also have Find My Mac on.
Is there anything else I can do to secure my MacBook Pro Retina? Mac theft has been a big problem latley where I live people breaking into hotels stealing Macs etc... aside from having my mac with me 24/7 is there anything else i can do to lock it down?
Also lets see someone does take my Mac and they go into the Apple store to try and unlock it WIll Apple Take the MacBook from them or will they say they can not help you and give the computer back? I would hope they would take the laptop from the person and call the rightfull owner? has anyone had success in that?
    Can Filevault be cracked?
Can u remove the firmware or OSX Password without the help of Apple?
    Mahalo

You can be sure it's safe. It's important not to forget the firmware password or you will have problems.

From my experience, when you take the Mac to an Apple Store, the Genius asks you for your Apple ID, so he/she can check the warranty coverage and that the person who took it is the owner. As it's registered to your Apple ID, Apple shouldn't repair the computer.
    joshua274 wrote:

If there's a way, I don't know it yet. FileVault 2 encrypts the whole hard drive and it's difficult or "impossible" (now) to crack it. Another thing is FileVault 1, included in Snow Leopard.
    joshua274 wrote:

In old Macs, some people say that it could be possible to reset the firmware password by removing the RAM. In new Macs, only Apple knows the way to reset the firmware password. Also, the RAM is soldered in the MacBook Pro with Retina display, so it's not possible to take it out

  • My 2011 Macbook Pro OSX 10.8.4 latest update won't connect to secured Wi-fi

    2011 Macbook Pro
    OSX 10.8.4 latest updates
Suddenly stopped connecting to any wireless network which is secured, WEP/WPA/WPA2/personal/enterprise all do NOT work.
Connects to unsecured networks just fine.
For example, our wireless password is:
    123456890!
I tried with WPA2, no luck.
Tried with WPA2 and pw 1234567890, no luck.
Tried with WPA and pw 1234567890!, no luck.
Tried with WPA and pw 1234567890, no luck.
Tried WEP with 1234567890, no luck.
Tried with NO SECURITY on this wi-fi network, connected right away.
-I did reset PRAM, no luck.
-I deleted from Keychain, no luck.
-I added as prefered network and removed, no luck.
-I added new network location, no luck.
-I removed the Wi-fi network adapter, rebooted, activated, no luck.
-In the mac console logs, all I see are "wlEvent: en1 en1 link DOWN" when I try to connect to my secured wireless network (home or my office or even at a neighbors).
    -Wireless diagnostics tell me nothing
-Console logs do not tell me anything
-Warranty is expired and no AppleCare
Seems like a bug to me, even though I have tried with a Netgear, Cisco/Linksys, D-Link router and even tried tethering to a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and iPhone 5, all same problem, says "Connection failed."
    APPLE FRIENDS HELP ME PLEASE!

For example, our wireless password is: 123456890!
Well a password that weak will get cracked in about 6 hours on just about any PC in the area.
Now: LKUY*&T&67NH(*JKÎM<PijriuÎÓyhm8t, that's a real good network password, even a huge botnet would have trouble cracking that. I know because my router was PING flooded by the Flashback botnet and survived.
After OS X is reinstalled over itself to fix it, you might have to do more as it could be a "in user account" issue with a corrupted preference file, bad users permissions or another cause that's not OS X
..Step by Step to fix your Mac

  • Is there an easy way to securely delete everything on my macbook PRO except for the OS and applications?  Giving my old Macbook to a family member.

Is there an eay way to securely erase all information on my macbook Pro except for the OS and applicatios?  I'm donating my computer but want to eliiminate my files and info.

Yes, boot to your install disk (start up while holding C key).  Go to Utilities>Disk Utility.  Choose erase and format your disk (make sure it's formatted as Mac OSX extended journaled).  There's is a button for security options.  Choose the 0 option (don't choose the multiple pass versions, or it will take forever, but that's extra security).  The 0 option writes a 0 in every location on the drive, and it takes a few hours.  It would take CIA or highly skilled hacker abilities to dig out any information.
Once you wipe the disc, reinstall OSX.  You're done.

I have a 1st Gen, MacBook Pro from 2006. For the last few years I've had to us my power adaptor as my battery no longer works, and shuts down after 30 seconds it. Now my power adaptor looks like it's coming to an end. Even though it's securely fitted, it often switches off.
I am planning on buying a new MacBook Pro later this year, but for the meantime I'm not sure if I should buy a new power adaptor, or if this is a problem with my MacBook Pro. Also does anyone know where I can buy a battery in the UK for 1st Gen MacBook Pro.

OWC has batteries for 1,1 generation MacBook Pros and they ship internationally - http://eshop.macsales.com/.
Your best bet for a power adapter is to get one from Apple. Third-party adapters just don't seem to be reliable (or safe). You can also buy a replacement battery directly from Apple, of course, but they're a bit more expensive.
    Good luck,

  • Why can't I connect to my brother MFC-J4510DW printer wirelessly? The printer is connected to the router and I can surf the web. I wonder if some security setting may be keeping it from connecting to my MacBook Pro.

Why can't I connect to my brother MFC-J4510DW printer wirelessly? The printer is connected to the router.
I can surf the web. My wife can print from her PC wirelessly on it.
I wonder if some security setting may be keeping it from connecting to my MacBook Pro. I've installed the software, firmware and driver updates but
    it still shows "off line"
with the printer power on. Any suggestions?

All I can suggest right now is back up first the try to reset the printing system, (all printers in the list will be removed).
Then connect directly to the printer via ethernet or to the Mac using USB and restart the efforts you have made up until now.
As for router settings, it's possible but not likely that your router only allows a small number of clients. It's also posible that you have MAC address filtering on, lastly are you using the correct wireless protocol, (802.11a/b/g WEP or WPA etc)?

How do I run a security scan on my macbook pro?

If you have only Mac OSX running  you don't need to run any security scan.
If any major security risk exists Apple offers Security Updates.
Just don't  install any applications not needed,
If you run Windows that is a different story.
