Security conflict with Reader-commentable PDFs?

I am having some trouble understanding what security options I have with PDFs that I make commentable in Reader.
I create my PDFs by printing to Adobe PDF from Word.  I apply a password, allow printing, and allow commenting.  Then, I open the PDF in Acrobat Pro 8, remove security and select Comments > Enable for Commenting in Adobe Reader (not allowed if I don't first remove security).  This prompts me to save the file under a different name.  This gives me a PDF that is commentable in Reader, but wide open with no security if I send it to someone who has Acrobat Pro.
If I re-apply a password, then it seems to save ok but if I close and re-open the file, the password doesn't work.  I get an incorrect password error.
Is commenting in Reader incompatible with Pro security settings?  It seems a bit risky, I can't be absolutely certain where my files end up and whether someone in the organisation will have Pro, not just reader.  I'm not sure whether I've just overlooked something small, or am doing things in the wrong order.  Any suggestions most gratefully accepted.

After Enable for Commenting in Adobe Reader you can't set password security.

  • Problems with reading a pdf-file using Safari/Adobe Acrobat Pro

Using Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.5.5. and Safari in Snow Leopard I open the pdf-file of  http://dare.uva.nl/document/505726 and small boxes appear in the text f.i. on page 70, 74, on the last page etc.
I don't know why those small boxes appear only on my MacBook Pro with the installed software and others don't read a corrupt text. If I click in den pdf-file on the right side of the mouse and choose "open with Adobe Acrobat Pro" the pdf-file opens correctly (without small boxes)!

As you discovered, Adobe Acrobat/Pro/Reader v.9 will crash for all managed user accounts that store their home folders on the server because it has "difficulty" reading and writing to a folder across a network, which is why it crashes shortly after it launches.
HOWEVER, there is hope. All you need to do is tell Adobe to write all of its files to the local drive rather than the home folder on the sharepoint, as follows:
While logged into your network-user account:
    1. Go to the "Shared" folder on the local drive. (Local HD > Users > Shared)
    2. Create a new folder named "9.0_x86" if you have an Intel or "9.0_ppc" if you have a PPC (without the quotes for either case). You will have to authenticate as an Administrator.
    3. Go to the Acrobat folder within the user's Application Support and delete the folder in it.
    (Home > Library > Application Support > Adobe > Acrobat > 9.0_x86 or 9.0_ppc)
    4. Open/launch the Terminal application found within the Utilities folder on you Mac.
    (Applications > Utilities > Terminal.app)
    5. In Terminal, enter the 1st command for Intel or the 2nd for PPC:
    ln -s /Users/Shared/9.0_x86 ~/Library/Application \Support/Adobe/Acrobat/9.0_x86
    OR
    ln -s /Users/Shared/9.0_ppc ~/Library/Application \Support/Adobe/Acrobat/9.0_ppc
Adobe Acrobat 9 should now work properly. You may get the "quit unexpectedly" error message the first time you quit the application, but should only happen the one time.
On a side note, the print spool is slow when printing very large multi-paged PDFs.
This is a fix I found in 2009 by Dennis, can't remember where though.

  • Web module generator security conflicts with DAD

    Hi,
using the WSGSEC package for web module security, I'm running into issues related to the mod_plsql configuration. There are 3 values for setting session state behaviour (PlsqlSessionStateManagement) following to the dads.README:
    1. StatelessWithResetPackageState (is default)
    2. StatelessWithFastResetPackageState
    3. StatelessWithPreservePackageState
    1. and 2. work well when switching security off (preference SECVAL=N), but prevent successful logon (cookie cannot be stored or read correctly) and logon screen returns ever and ever.
    3. allows logon but brings the "erratic behavior" mentioned in the README, mainly after DML operations.
How can I manage the session state for the generated application? Logon needs a preserved state, the generated application needs cleaning and resetting. Now, we are developing on Windows 2003 Server but production will run on HPUX.
    regards

    Sorry,
some minutes after posting this question I found the hidden chapter on Security in the online help. I hope to mange it now with the information provided.

  • Bundling of McAfee Security Scan with Reader download is deceptive

I know that there is a checkbox to select to include the security scan but I honestly believe that you have deliberately layed out the page in a way that would cause most to miss this checkbox.  I believe you are familiar with Gestalt Principles and know that people naturally deal with separate columns of text as seprate items. I believe you are taking advantage of this to maximize the number of people who unknowingly install Security Scan along with their Adobe reader.
I disagree with the idea of including the extra software by default and wish you would stop. If you insist on continuing with that, please change the download page layout to make it more clear that you are getting software you don't want along with the software you are looking for.

We're simply fellow users like yourself so can't do anything about this.
BUT, it is deceptive and if it helps, many people agree with you on this (including myself). At best, they should have the check box set as an opt-in rather than opt-out.
There are a few threads going in the forum that is geared more towards the adobe.com site at http://forums.adobe.com/community/general/adobedotcom_feedback. You can join in on any one of them. It is also more prone to being seen by someone that can make a change.

  • Problem with reading a PDF with filled interactive forms

    Hello,
I have a problem to read a filed pdf file.
When I open a pdf I see the forms fields like this:
To read the field I need to click on it, when it is active I can read what is written
What can I do to just read the filled pdf form without cliking every field?
    Thanks in advance for help
    Degosh

That means they used Mac Preview to fill out the forms and they are broken. I've heard there was a script out there that may fix them but haven't used it myself.
You should have them use Adobe Reader to fill out the form again.

  • Reader extended PDF issue

    Hello,
I have a problem with reader extended PDFs. The situation is as follows:
I made a PDF form in Lifecycle Designed ES2 with a dynamic table, saved it, opened the form in Adobe Acrobat X Pro and
saved it again as a Reader extended PDF and now a weard thing happened: Acrobat has created 2 new rows in the
dynamic table which are now corupting all my scripts.
Any ideas why Acrobat is doing that how to fix it?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
I have had this happen and it turned out to be one of my binding expressions was wrong, I had one field that wasn't binding to the row correctly so it generated another row for it.
Are you using "use name" binding?

  • Reader X - Getting Security Alert with a data filled PDF form

My site uses PDF forms that have their data filled in dynamically by the classic asp code on the site. Before Reader X version, they were filled and displayed without a problem. With Reader X they display the security warning: "Data from this site is blocked to avoid potential security risks....." and the Options button to trust the site. I get this even thoguh it's the same site they are on already and I'm using an SSL cert for all files and I'm also using a direct link to generate the PDF.
I know the user can just click the options and make the problem go away but many users seem unable to read and or panic when they see the alert.
Is there a security setting or trust setting I can add or set in my form so that I will not get this security alert??

No, apart from creating a certified document, but the user would still have to add you as a trusted source. If a document could override this, it would be rather pointless to have it in the first place.

  • Reader enabled PDF stamp comment with date?

    Hi All,
    Working with Adobe Reader 9.0.0.
I have a reader extended PDF file and have used the Dynamic stamp tool to mark up as approved.
The approved stamp won't seem to display the date and time that it was used, (as it does so well in acrobat X Pro).
I can right click the Approved stamp and then properties to see the date/time, but the displayed stamp just says APPROVED (By (Name*) at (BLANK*))
Anybody know of any settings that will enable the display of the date and time on an APPROVED stamp within reader 9.0.0?
    Thanks in advance.
    Knocker.

I too would like to know how this stamp tool dating works. I'm trying to set up a custom stamp, and can't figure out the correct Javascript used to automatically update each new day. Thanks!

  • Cannot view or download PDF files from secure web site with Reader X.

Ran into a similar problem when Reader X first came out (Reader 9 had been working fine).  Only a blank window was displayed, but a work around was to "Save As" and use the view option to display and print the document. I recently had to replace my modem. Since then, that work around option is no longer available; it errors out saying that the file could not be downloaded.  We are using IE9 and Windows 7.  I tried another browser, Google Chrome, with the same negative results. Also, I got the same results on another secure website.  I have deleted and downloaded another copy of Reader X (10.1.1) and checked for updates, run the Repair program, and confirmed that Protected Mode and AdobePDF.dll are both enabled.  I looked at my Internet settings, too but found nothig that would obviously
    interfere with Reader.

Usually, this message occurs with Windows. First time I've seen it with OS X. Looking into it.

  • What are the security settings to lock down a form with fillable fields and yet allow someone with Reader to fill in the fields as will as save the form and print it?

What are the security settings to lock down a form with fillable fields and yet allow someone with Reader to fill in the fields as will as save the form and print it?

You want to allow someone to open your document and fill out the form (in the fields you have created), but not change or edit the form, right? Here's the answer - assuming you are using Acrobat Pro and someone will be opening the PDF using at least Acrobat Reader 9 and up:
Tools > Protection > Encrypt < Encrypt with Password
Answer YES to change the security.
    A new window opens:
Do NOT select Document Open (or that will require a password to open the document.)
Select: Permissions (Check the box next to "Restrict editing and printing of the document.")
Change the following 2 settings from the drop-down box:
              Printing Allowed: Select High Resolution
Changes Allowed: Select Commenting, filling in form fields, and signing signature fields
Leave selected: "Enable text access for screen reader devices for the visually impaired"
Change Permissions Password (insert a strong password)
Leave all other settings alone in "Options"
              OK - OK
Re-enter the Permissions Password (the one you entered above)
              OK - OK
Save the PDF to apply the security [notice that (SECURED0 will appear after the document title]

  • Reader X will not read comment enabled PDF

My computer was recently upgraded to Windows 7. After the up upgrade, I installed Acrobat Reader X and quickly discovered that not all PDF files were readable. I found that if I create a PDF file from CS5 InDesign, the file reads just fine. If I enable comments from Acrobat 9, Reader X will not read the file. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what is the fix?

I have found that I am not the only one in my company with this problem with Reader X and Windows 7. In all cases, the document does open, eventually, after minutes of waiting. Documents on our web site are password protected and locked down. The problem seems to be related to the Security options. If no security options are enabled, it opens normally; but enabling security options seems to slow it down.
If anyone can suggest a fix, that would be appreciated.

  • Adobe Reader 8 - Document Security - conflicting information

A PDF has been created in a process where Security is applied by itext sharp; and all values should be set to Allowed.
When I check File > Properties > Security Tab (in adober reader 8) I can see:
    1) At the bottom a 'Document Restrictions Summary' section, but not all my values are "Allowed". So possibly something isn't right with the itext sharp process. However what is more confusing and the purpose of this post is that I can also see....
    2) At the top the Document Security section and a Show Details button. Selecting this brings up the Document Security dialog with another list of settings - some of which are a contradiction of those shown in the Summary list (point 1 above) e.g. Document Assembly is Not Allowed in 1) above, but is shown as Allowed in the separate Document Security dialog?????
I can't find any information on the difference between these two sections and which Value is correct.
    Any help appreciated.
    ej.

I just need to clarify this.
So if I see the Document Assembly not allowed in the Reader, and if I can assemble the document in the Acrobat, what does it mean?
I am submitting a government grant application, and they specify saying we have to submit the document with a setting that allow document assembly, commenting, editing, etc.  This is to allow reviewers to be able to comment on and assemble applications.
Should I be worried when I see in Reader that Document Assembly is Not Allowed?  Or is this OK, as far as Document Assembly is allowed in Acrobat?
    Thank you,

Is there an Iphone 3G Software Update Fixes security vulnerability associated with viewing malicious PDF files?  Latest version I can download is 4.2.1

No fix is needed since that vulnarability isn't in 4.2.1.

Need advice on a saving file issue. I'm having problem with saving a .pdf file to computer. Continually get an error message " This document could not be saved. There was a problem reading this document (21). This is new as this error message just recently started to pop-up.

A "quick" fix that worked for me was to uninstall Adobe... then download the base install for Adobe Reader 11.0.
Then download each of the individual updates and run them sequentially.
I've installed back up to the last security update which is version 08 and have been able to do normal Save As operations.
You will have to disable automatic updates in order to stay at version 08 until Adobe resolves this issue in a later release.
