Security in iPhoto

Is there any way to password protect iPhoto 08 or certain galleries within iPhoto?

Put the library on an Encrypted Disk Image.
That's the only way.

  • IPhoto content insecure...now duplicates with weird codenames

iPhoto told me that my content was insecure and asked me to create a new folder and then started reuploading all my photos. Now I have duplicates of photos and everything has weird code-like names in the captions.
What happened and what can I do to make it go back to normal?

what version of iPhoto? What was the exact message? What exactly is happening?what do you mean by creating a new folder? Where are things being uploaded to? What is uploading them?
In short your post makes no sense - there are no messages re security in iPhoto - iPHoto does not work with folders - does not change photo names - and you never see its structure

  • Missing photos- have tried a number of steps. Help wanted.

Hello, first time here. Would appreciate some help.
Have read 15 or so pages of threads/questions which was useful.
In my iphoto 6.0.6 I have lost some photos since my last backup due to renaming of film roll names in finder, not through iphoto (I now know and wont do it again). The photos of a renewable energy site tour and my bday with all the german relatives, show up as grey thumbnail with question mark that when I click on it, is a grey photo with a question mark (can't find it I assume).
I had also recently trashed my iphoto trash (needed to clear some room), so any photos not knowing where to live, may have been ditched. My automatic syncing with my ipod also means that this 2nd backup has removed the deleted photos from my ipod.
In iphoto, I can get the image info of the missing photos but on searching in finder for the names, it does not find anything. Neither with manually looking in the Data, Modified and Originals folders in my iphoto library.
I have used holding 'apple and option when restarting iphoto' and clicked all the options together (backup up photo library photo first), it doesnt recover the photos and still leaves the grey thumbnails there.
Are the grey thumbnails and availability of missing photo info a function of some organising file of iphoto and/or are their other steps I could take to find them?
Have looked into Data Rescue & File Salvage (trial features have not helped/found them).
Hope someone can provide some tips.
    Carl

    Thanks for your reply TD.
In copying my iphoto library to the desktop, Creating a new library, and then recreating them the new library by dragging the original rolls- I am not sure this will solve my problem.
I have searched through the original folder for the photos I am after but they are no longer there. Recreating a new library from these folders will give me the photos I have now, get rid of the grey thumbnails & info of the photos I lost (and remove my albums etc as you said).
I am speculating that there was something going funny as both rolls that have 'corrupted'/ photos missing, and a new one I just did as a test (but not deleting the photos from the camera!) did not complete their download in one go, that is it would stop partway through the download, and I would need to click download again (a result of not enough startup diskspace), but they all downloaded. Perhaps there is is a process at the end of the download that it skipped, that makes the photos sit all nice and secure in iphoto.
    1) Can it be explained why the thumbnails and information (when I do apple 'i') are still there but the photos are missing?
    2) Is there still any advantage in recreating a library if I know the photos I want aren't in the originals folder?
    3) Can you comment on any implications on when iphoto doesn't download all the contents in one go. (e.g. stopped partway for not enough diskspace)
    My safety net for future:
    - More frequent backups
    - Backing up the library6.iPhoto file after each download (Automator?)
    - Clearing space, using new drive.
    - Turning off 'delete from camera' download option until I know they are all in there.
Thanks for your help and clarity.

  • Hotmail and Mail Synchronisation: Deleted Emails

Hi Everyone, I purchased my first MacBook in September 2008, which is essentially the same as the MacBook Pro and I purchased it within the time it was called MacBook only! In September 2013, where I was operating my old MacBook on the newest system available, it crashed and wouldn't restart anymore - turns out the memory is broken and needs to be replaced (error noise and grey screen, when starting the MacBook). However, now I urgently need some Email and Photo data from that MacBook and therefore did an imaging of the harddrive in order to copy all the data and am now experiencing the following problems:
    1. Hotmail Mails - After Synchronisation with the Mail application, all emails deleted themselves on the Microsoft servers online and therefore could not be synchronised from the hotmail servers themselves and is solely stored on my old MacBook. When I tried to open and find the data on the copied files on my new MacBook via a harddrive, I could not access the mail folder because it simply was inexisting within the Mail application itself - please can you help me find a way to restore those old Mail items?
    2. iPhoto - I secured my iPhoto library with Macfort and can't remember what my Macfort password was

Log into your webmail on a browser and delete them from there.

  • Iphoto 9.4.3 does not open after security update. osx 10.7.5 Lion is running

Last used iphoto  a month ago to upload photos. Today attempted to upload daughter's gymnastic photos and iphoto 9.4.3 will not open. Stops at dialog that says it must be updated to open my library. But I run Lion not Maverick. The new iphoto only runs on Maverick. Only system change I can think of since end january is the security update I did a few days ago. I've checked the iphoto library and it seems intact with 43 gigs of photo etc stored over last 10 years.
MacApp says new update available 9.5, but it doesn't work with my Lion. I don't want to change anything right now.
    Computer is MacPro G5 2009.

    OK - good luck
Generally it is better to resolve problems and then upgrade since generally problems have nothing to do with the Application but are data problems which can be made more difficult to resolve by upgrading the software while the problem still exists

  • I just installed the latest Security update and now I can't open iPhoto. I keep getting a message that it quit unexpectedly because of a problem with the scene kit plugin. I have no access to my photos.

I just installed the latest security update and now I cannot access iPhoto. I keep getting a message that it quit unexpectedly due to some conflict with the Scene Kit plugin.
I'm using a Macbook Pro  Mavericks Version 10.9.5

Probably the reboot used to log into the Guest account and then your account again fixed the problem.  If often will.

  • Both iPhoto and Mac Mail not working after most recent security update

Granted I wasn't there to see it happen but I think my mom's computer here is a bit fubar based on something having been changed on her computer prior to the last security update. My guess is that her friends who think they are 'helping' are actually causing some real problems but I'm here now so I'm just trying to fix it with what I can.
Essentially neither her mail or iPhoto seems to be working. I've found a similar error message in other posts but what throws me for a loop is that, when I use the console log and look at the crash files for both applications, they are both telling me the exact same thing. Could they both be pulling the same file for use? I've already run the disk repair stuff, changed the permissions on the file and just about everything else I could think of - do I need to reinstall the application or perhaps the entire operating system?

Hi, I think I need to update my profile because my computer definitely says it has 10.4.11
I managed to solve the stickies and TextEdit issues by removing Butler in the end.

  • IPhoto import Browser failure, after security update?

Hi, Anyone else had this problem?
    iPhoto import Browser failure.
No Events or Albums show, although PhotoBooth is visible, error message 'Open iPhoto 5 or later to see photos...'
This used to work, but not since installing Security Update 2010-006 (1.0),
    with "iTunes" (10.0.1) and JavaForMacOSX10.6Update3.
    Using iPhoto '09 (8.1.2), iMovie '09 (8.0.6).
Heard mention that now only alpha-numeric characters are allowed for file names and titles, so started replacing "&", apostrophes, etc. But there are a LOT of photos to change!
    Console shows:
    [0x0-0x15015].com.apple.iPhoto[264]
    MRMovieServer[273] <Error>: kCGErrorFailure
Tried repairing permissions, but got a warning about a SUID file has been modified and will not be repaired, (not sure if this is relevant).
Removed com.apple.iApps.plist and com.apple.iMovie8.plist, which then gave a slightly different view of the browser in iMovie.
Can no longer drag items from iPhoto either!
Any ideas of how to proceed (and remain sane)?

    Hi,
I've had something like this, since October.
Firstly, In the Utilities folder, open Disk Utility, select the disk where the Applications are (Main hard disk) click First Aid, then "Repair Permissions". Leave it running with nothing else open.
When finished, open iMovie, click the photo browser icon, any luck?
Seen an Apple support doc 'Cannot see iPhoto in other Apps', basically you may be right about ampersands & apostrophes.
In iPhoto, look at all your smart album names for non-alpha-numeric characters, and replace or delete the possible culprits. I had lots of these, including brackets (which were not a problem until recently). Keep checking your smart albums to find others, such as these: !@£$%^&()[]{}'\"|~.
Quit iPhoto and all other iLife Apps, then in your home folder, Library, Preferences, move 'com.apple.iApps.plist' to the desktop (this will be recreated when you next open an iApp/iLife application, such as iPhoto).
You may need to remake the iPhoto AlbumData.xml file, after all that name editing. See later.
Open iMovie and click the photo browser icon, if you still get the message, rather than Albums and Events, Quit iMovie.
Open iPhoto, double check your source list for folders which you may have smart albums in, (click the triangle to the left of any folders that you've made to reveal their contents). Repeat the search and replace of special characters. I'd missed a few, hiding in folders.
Now would be a good time to remake the iPhoto 'AlbumData.xml' file.
Quit all applications, go to your Pictures folder, iPhoto Library, ctrl-click, 'Show package contents', drag 'AlbumData.xml' to the desktop.
    Close the finder windows.
Open iPhoto, create a new album, then Quit, (this should remake the xml file).
Open iMovie again and click the photo browser icon. This is the point where I had success, I hope it works for you as well.
    All the best, Ian

  • I inadvertently trashed my Iphoto library.  Can it be retrieved like in Windows, you just go to a prior saved recovery point?  It wasn't securely trashed, just trashed.

I inadvertently trashed my Iphoto library.  Can I retrieve it, like one can restore to an earlier time period on Windows?  I trashed it but I did not use secure trash.

if you are running Time Machine - launch it and go back to the time you want, select the iPhoot library and click restore
Step 1 - launch Time Machine (either click on it in the DOCK or double click on it in the applications folder)
Step 2 - in the resulting window (which looks like a finder window) go back in time to when your iPhoto library had not been trashed
Step 3 - select the iPhoto library at that time (by default it is in your pictures folder)
Step 4 - Click on "RESTORE" and restore the iPhoto library from before it was trashed
Step 5 launch iPhoto (click on iPhoto in the DOCK or double click on it in the applications folder)
You do not copy or directly access the TM backup - as noted you use TM to restore the iPhoto library
Additionally, I would assume that I should start from scratch.  Access and delete/trash all the pictures that I've since imported from a disk that I had save them too a year ago, in effect leave Iphoto empty before attempting any restore/import of the file, if possible.  Yes?
No do not delete anything until this is all sorted out - and if you restore properly you certainly will not have to start over

  • TS1424 I cannot purchase iPhoto because I did not remember my security questions... Do you know how I can but it, please?

I really need to buy in Apple Store the iPhoto BUT IS SOMETHING IMPOSSIVEL... two days I am trying to do it but I couldn't ... they ask two questions that I have never remenber. Please, is anyone else can help to buy it? Thanks, Maria

Maria, you can change your security questions/answers through the country site from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699 or you can call the country support number from http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 and ask to speak with the Account Security Team.

    Thomas,
There are many similar reports since yesterday. The Apple Print Services seem to be down, see:
Re: Trying to buy  book I created. When I hit "checkout" nothing happens. It's not like Apple to not want to make more money. Any ideas?
    Try again later.

  • Backing Up iPhoto and Security

Two or three times a year I backup my entire iPhoto library by copying it to a portable HD and then I bring the portable HD to work to have an 'offsite' backup. Is there a way to secure the folder to prevent anyone from plugging in my hard drive and checking out my pictures. I really don't know why anyone would do that, but I appear to be slightly paranoid.

To take Niel's suggestion one step further you could create an encrypted sparse disk image. That's a disk image that will grow in size as you add items to it. This article has more about it: macosxhints.com - Create an encrypted disk image that grows as ....
Here are some more articles about sparse disk images:
Ease sparse disk image compaction | Mac OS X Hints | Macworld

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Why does iPhoto delete photos out of secure photo storage apps, and there is no option Not to delete from everywhere ie all albums on all devices

I purchased IPhoto then saw a duplicate photo in my photo album so went to delete it, the delete function came up with a message this photo is in more than one album do you want to delete from everywhere, as no other option available ie " no just this album" I hit delete and then found it had deleted the photo from all my devices 2 iPhones and 2 iPads, the photo was in a " Safe App " supposed to be secure why did this happen, any help would be appreciated

When I downloaded photos from a camera SD card using an adapter, I noticed two Albums were created in the Photo app.(Last Import & All Import). Like you stated, there is no option to delete excess photos without deleting all of them. So this is the lengthy steps I went through to delet the extra album (I hope someone comes up with a shorter process):
    1) Connect iPad into your PC (Make sure you configured to Sync with iTunes)
    2) Go to My Computer > right click and open Apple iPad > right click and open  Internal Storage > right click and  open DCIM. (This will show the photos from those to Albums only)
    3) Right click on a empty space on the desktop
    4) Click on New > Folder
    5) Go back to the DCIM files and right click on each file(one at a time) then copy and paste each file over the New Folder.
    6) Go back to the DCIM files and open each folder and right click and delete each photo.
You will notice that all the same photos are being deleted on the Photo app simultaneously.
    7) Then drag the New Folder into you Pictures on the PC.
8)Then open iTunes on your PC and click on the Photo tab and click Sync on the bottom right to import those photos back to your iPad.
I hope my scenario can apply to you.

  • Downloaded Security Update and Microsoft Word and iPhoto don't work

I recently downloaded the newest Security Update for my Mac, and now Microsoft Word won't launch, giving me the error message:
The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "2<Microsoft Word><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_CarbonSound>"
and photos won't appear in iPhoto. That is, iPhoto launches, but when I click on a picture to view it, the loading rotating circle appears in the middle and the picture doesn't come up. Can anyone help? Thank you!

I've got the teacher's version of MS Office and it wasn't affected by the security update. You might have to reinstall MS to get the supporting files back.
You might ask over in the Tiger forum. Someone may have first hand experience with that.
