Security logs for UNIX

We have some user that cant get access to our box from an external location.
We keep getting user authentication errors. We have verified passwords, permissions, and no changes have been made to host file.
Is there a log that will give me information about unsuccessful logins to the server?
I am looking in /var/log but see nothing that is giving me the info I need.
EG: I can see in the file messages, information about last opened sessions, but I see nothing for any denials.
Thanks,

The failedlogin doesnt exist either
I am trying to simply create the btmp file (with 777 set, owner is root:root) but after failing the logins many times there are still no entries there.
Will continue search!
Actually, I just created the btmp with the same permissions, owner and group as the wtmp but still nothing generated in there. . .
Now, when we use the command lastb
we get
btmp begins Tue Mar 17 11:37:26 2009
If this means it is enabled, we still get no entries when we try to login in a "bad" way.

  • Parse Security Logs for User Account logon Computer Name

    Greetings,
I was recently tasked with creating a list of user accounts and the computer in which they logged onto.  Unfortunately, we do not have time to use the logon script method.   I believe we can achieve this goal using software similar to LANSweeper
however not all computers will be turned on at a given time and I believe this application gathers it's information from the client PC.  One possible solution I see is parsing the data from our domain controllers Security Logs / Successful Logons however
this is proving to be a challenge. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi Chris,
I was recently tasked with creating a list of user accounts and the computer in which they logged onto.
I believe we can achieve this goal using software.
There is no built-in tool to complete this task.
However, we can configure event log trigger to send email when specific logon events are generated.

  • When I go to a website requiring login, and am logged in automatically, I still get prompted by Software Security Defice for master password. New w/Firefox 24.

If I go to a website that requires a login & password, and I have it set up to automatically log me in, I get automatically logged in (it remembers by userid & password for that site), but the prompt from the Software Security Device for my master password appears as well. I can cancel the prompt and it goes away, but it shouldn't show up because I'm already logged in. This problem started happening after I downloaded Firefox 24 yesterday.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Note that Firefox Sync also requires you to enter the Master Password.

  • Advice needed: what does your company log for SAP security role changes?

My client has a situation where for many years, they never logged changes to SAP security roles.  By that I mean, they never logged even basic details, like who requested a change, tested it, approved it, and what changed!!  Sadly their ticketing system is terrible, completely free-form text and not even searchable.
Does anyone here use Word docs, Excel sheets, or some other way to capture security role change details?   What details do you capture?  What about Projects, that involve dozens of changes and testing over several months?
I plan to recommend, at least, they need to use a unique# (a ticket#, or whatever) for every change and update the same in PFCG role desc tab, plus in CTS description of transports... but what about other details, since they have a bad ticketing system?  I spoke with internal audit and change Mgmnt "manager" about it, and they are clueless and will not make recommendations.  It's really weird but they will get into big trouble eventually without any logs for security changes!

Does anyone here use Word docs, Excel sheets, or some other way to capture security role change details? What details do you capture? What about Projects, that involve dozens of changes and testing over several months?
    I have questions:
    a) Do you want to make things straight
    b) Do you want to implement a versioning mechanism
    c) You cannot implement anything technical, but you`re asking about best "paper" practise?
The mentioned scenarios can be well maintained if you use SAP GRC Solutions 10 (Business Role Management)
Task Based, Approvals, Risk Analysis, SOD and role generation and maintenance in a structured way (Business Role Management). Workflow based, staged process with approvals.
PFCG transaction usage will be curtailed to minimum if implemented fully.
Do we really want to do things "outside" PFCG?
    @all:
    a) do you guys use custom approval workflows for roles?
    b) how tight your processes are? how much paperwork, workflow, tickets, requests and incidents you have to go through to change a role?
    c) who is a friend of GRC here, raise your hand
    Cheers Otto
p.s.: very interesting discussion, I would like to learn something here about how it works out there in the wild

  • Is there any Security or Change Log for Shockwave Player 12.1.3.153 available?

I haven't seen so far any Security or Change Log for Shockwave Player 12.1.3.153. Given the Update ID SW12-13153 this seems to be an ordinary update (not a security hotfix with the prefix APSB...). Has anyone seen a change log?
    Thanks.

As always: no.  The last Security Bulletin issued for Shockwave Player was http://helpx.adobe.com/security/products/shockwave/apsb14-10.html (March 13, 2014).

  • Permissions for secure.log

Every time I repair permissions, there's one item that always needs its permissions repaired, the secure.log. I understand that its permissions are changed by some maintenance script, and the whole issue should be harmless. But what I don't understand is why doesn't that same maintenance script reinstate the original permissions after it has run. Or else, why doesn't Disk Utility just let them be?
We now have a situation where the secure.log has certain permissions. Some OSX-native software (maintenance script) changes them, and another OSX-native software (Disk Utility) thinks that's wrong and changes them back. The next time the maintenance script runs, it changes them again, which Disk Utility again thinks is wrong, and so on in a perpetual cycle. It seems pretty pointless to me. It also seems like an easy thing to "correct". It's not like it's a malfunctioning third party software involved.
Is there some obscure technical reason for why this is so?

See toward the end of this User Tip for an explanation:
Spurious Permission errors in OS X 10.4.
The weekly maintenance script is ever so slightly more permissive in that it allows group read access. If you're at all worried you can change the script, but it really isn't worth it.
Is there some obscure technical reason for why this is so?
Basically it was low in the list of changes, I assume.
It was still there in early releases of 10.5, but appears now to be gone in 10.5.7. I know it was still there last February.

  • Permissions fix for secure.log and iTunes frameworks

    Aperture 1.5
PBG4 showed minor to considerable performance improvements. Once my main library finished running on the Quad, with 6600 traction engine, I started to do some real work.
The following is in Project View on some images with patches/healing and straighten applied.
IT WAS UGLY. SBOD every time I touched anything (yes, all previews completed). 45 secs to open the first image (8Mb RAW from Canon 20d). 5-6 secs. for any touch on Levels or Exposure. IMPOSSIBLE.
Switched off and reduced res. of JPG's in Preferences. No difference.
BTW Apple Devt. Spank time> There is NO way to turn off Preview creation and run as batch later that I can see. Please fix. Agreed they render in background but why not wait until you leave focus on that image .... it's recreating a preview after every adjustment I make. C'mon guys, get real, that should be fixed asap.
Quit Aperture, restarted. Just as bad. Aperture is the only app. running, and Activity Monitor shows 319% CPU with 480Mb RAM just with a Levels change ... sounds high. 6-7 sec. response time for anything I do and 20-40 secs for image rendering, except adjacent images. Quit Aperture.
Decided to run Repair Permissions (RAID = 0 drive). Fixed iTunes frameworks and secure.log. I believe secure.log to be the culprit.
Restarted Aperture and performance improvements obvious. Sliders now work real-time and image rendering a couple of seconds. Reapplied Preferences setting for Previews and no significant performance degradation (though it is interesting watching the task list pause the preview generation when you make further edits.)

It sounds like you should just turn off Maintain Previews for the project you are on (selct prj and change state in top level gear menu in prj pane) - then make your adjustments ( your previews won't be up to date then of course) but the when you are ready to make into previews just select all the images and choose Update Preview manually from the context menu.

  • Error in "Checking Availabe Space for the DB2 UDB for Unix..." phase

    Hello,
We are in the middle of an Upgrade proyect from R/3 4.6C (kernet 4.6D EXT) to ECC 6.0.
As a first step we are doing an Heterogenous System Copy to migrate from servers with HP-UX B11.11/Informix 9.4 to servers with AIX 5.3/DB2 UDB 8.
We already did the database import with no errors. When we are installing R3 4.6C in the target server we are getting u201CMemory Fault (coredump)u201D error in the u201CChecking Availabe Space for the DB2 UDB for Unix, Windows Tablespacesu201D phase.
    Any advice will be appreciated.

  • How to stop QuickTime Streaming messages in secure.log?

The secure.log of the server is flooded with these kind of messages:
Jan 25 12:13:08 server com.apple.SecurityServer[41]: Succeeded authorizing right 'com.apple.server.admin.streaming' by client '/usr/sbin/QuickTimeStreamingServer' for authorization created by '/System/Library/CoreServices/ServerManagerDaemon.bundle'

Jan 25 12:15:03 server com.apple.SecurityServer[41]: Succeeded authorizing right 'com.apple.server.admin.streaming' by client '/usr/sbin/QuickTimeStreamingServer' for authorization created by '/System/Library/CoreServices/ServerManagerDaemon.bundle'
    Jan 25 12:15:34: --- last message repeated 3 times ---
I have tried to adjust the idle time setting in /Library/Preferences/com.apple.servermgrd.plist to 300, the supposed Maximum above which idle time defaults to 60 seconds. In my experience this initially works after which the flooding starts all over. The default interval is also a lot smaller than 60 secs.
How to effectively eliminate these messages apart from disabling QuickTime Streaming all together?

I would.  (Ignore it.)  OS X logging has long had this misfeature; various versions of applications have been far too chatty, others have log ominous messages that are harmless, and there's the occasional innocuous-nasty message logged.
If this particular message bugs you — I have several similar "favorites" in my own logs — add it onto a grep --invert-match pattern or such, and filter it out of the logs before you review them.  When you're running OS X or another Unix box in production, message filters based on grep or similar are used to reduce the chatter, and also to flag the nasty messages.

  • Secure.log and log rotation problems

I had originally posted this in the Tiger section, but now finding the Unix section which I think would be able to help me more. here is the link to the post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1913487&tstart=0
Also I am getting this in my system.log, I have googled it and cannot find anything that tells me what it is:
    Feb 19 18:54:34 SamiMac kernel[0]: m378d97c0 0
some help on this would also be appreciated.

The secure.log message is explained at the bottom of Spurious Permission errors in OS X 10.4.
For your ipfw logs, check that /etc/periodic/weekly/500.weekly contains the line
    for i in ftp.log lookupd.log lpr.log mail.log netinfo.log hwmond.log ipfw.log ppp.log secure.log; do
(although I don't know why it wouldn't) and then check this is actually being run by looking at /var/log/weekly.out. Try
    tail -10 /var/log/weekly.out
Let us know what you see.
I haven't seen that kernel message before

  • I have a new email address and my old email keeps coming up on icloud when trying to update apps and i don't know the password or security questions for the old email. I can sign in with my apple id which is tied to another email but not itunes how to fix

I have an apple id and it has my current email attached to it. however when i go to update apps it's asking for the password for an old email. I no longer have the old email and can't use it. when I go to icloud on my ipad it asks for the password for old email. it doesn't allow me to change the old email to current. when i go to reset it i can't remember the password or security questions for the old email so it doesn't let me go any further. How do I fix this? Do i need to call apple support?

I have the same problem - it is maddening. I rely on this iPad for work so this is not just an annoyance! The above solutions of changing the appleid on the device or on the website do not work.
The old email address no longer exists - I haven't used it in a year probably and I no longer have the account.  I logged into the appleid website and there is no trace of the old email address so there is nothing that can be deleted or changed there.  On the iPad there is no trace of the old email address so nothing can be deleted there either. I have updated the iPad software and the same problem comes right back.  Every 2 seconds I am asked to log in using the old non-existent email.  The device is currently useless.
The only recent change to anything was the addition of an Apple TV device, which was set up using the correct login and password.
Does anyone have any ideas? The iPad has been backed up to the iCloud so presumably it now won't recognize the current iCloud account? So restoring may notbe an option?

  • How to Define Workbook / Business Ares Security Correctly for new Users

    Hi All,
Please could you help me understand the Security Model for Workbooks and business Areas as I believe I am very close to understanding it, but missing something important.
    Background Information:
We are using the predefined Oracle Business Areas (Payables, Receivables, Purchasing & General Ledger) to build our reports on. These are the steps I am taking to try and assign a new user & responsibility access to the existing report.
    1. I create the Report in Discoverer Desktop under the ‘General Ledger Responsibility’ logged in as myself – assume report name = ‘Report_1’.
    2. I create a new Responsibility in Oracle Apps called ‘Discoverer Resource Coordinators’.
    3. I create a new User in Oracle Apps called ‘Joe Bloggs’ and assign the responsibility ‘Discoverer Resource Coordinators’ to the Joe.
    4. Logged in as myself in Discoverer Desktop, Responsibility ‘General Ledger’ I Share the Report (Report_1) to the new Responsibility I just created ‘Discoverer Resource Coordinators’.
    5. In Discoverer Administration, Security, I assign the new Responsibility ‘Discoverer Resource Coordinators’ to the predefined Oracle Business Areas (Payables, Receivables, Purchasing & General Ledger).
    6. In Discoverer Administration I set privileges so that the Responsibility ‘Discoverer Resource Coordinators’ can do all tasks, query data, administer. .etc. etc..
    7. I therefore believe everything has been done and attempt to Login and run the report under Joe Bloggs, but am unable to retrieve any data.
    Help… what am I missing!
    Thanks,
    Lance

    Dear All,
This has now been adjusted according to your recommendations but to no avail.
Myself and Lance have ensured that this new responsibility has unlimited access to all the existing Business areas to eliminate joins within folders not being recognised, we have also ensured that the workbooks that have been created are shared with the correct responsibility.
I have thoroughly tested this set up by logging in as this new responsibility within Disco. Client to try and retrieve data in a new Workbook, but even for the simplest of queries this fails.
It seems that there may be a problem with the Responsibility linking to the EUL, could this be due to the new responsibility being created after the Current EUL was set up?
Does anyone have any information or knowledge where this could happen?
    Regards
    Si
