Security, Mac OS X 10.5.8 & NZB docs

Since upgrading to Mac OS X 10.5.8 from 10.5.6, now i have a security alert every time I attempt to launch an NZB document. How do I get rid of this? It believes I'm launching an NZB application and do I want to do this. Yes, I want to do this all the time without being asked the question...previously I didn't ever get this alert.
Is the answer somewhere in Javascript Preferences perhaps?

  • [switchport port-security mac ] on [interface VLAN n?]

    Hello,
did anyone tried to use the command [switchport port-security mac-address n?] on [interface VLAN n?] ? (for example in a 2950).
I don't have the material to make that test, and I am not sure if it works or not.
    Many thanks!

    Hi,
Switchport port-security as the name implies is to be configured on switchport. VLAN interface on the switch is a routed interface and hence, you can't apply any switchport configuration on it and that includes, port security.

  • A secure Mac that can also work out when security is not the issue?

    Hi all,
Entering new territory here, and would like some advice if anyone can offer any, please?
Have had open network between 3 Macs & a Tosh for a while now. Each machine has read/write access to pretty well everything else. Only the iBook has login with password enabled at startup as it's the most likely to get taken (as well as the Tosh, but it's out of the picture with this request). Each Mac also has network connections with the Cube, which has a shared iTunes library on a Firewire ext HDD for all Macs, so this ext HDD is mounted on the desktop of any iTunes sharing machine on the network.
I use iRooster as an alarm on my Cube (my head was welded to my pillow as a child), which happily wakes the Cube from sleep to blast nice sounds Monday to Friday.
Now, I need to keep access to the data on the Cube more secure (ideally by using user accounts, but I'm open to suggestion). However, It seems to me that if I enable a login password to open the Cube, I'm gonna hafta get up before my iRooster alarm sounds, so that I can login to the Cube, and allow startup of applications (which I don't presently have as startup items in any way).
Am I asking too much of my beautiful OSX, or has somebody done anything similar?
    Many thanks,
    Matt

That seems sound advice. Just check & adjust read/write permissions to Cube data from iMac, iBook & Tosh to keep network secure...?

  • Which is less/more secure, Mac OS 10.4.11 or Mac OS 10.6.8?

I understand that both Mac OS 10.4.11 and Mac OS 10.6.8 have security holes, and that 10.4.11 is no longer supported.  If neither 10.4.11 nor 10.6.8 are supported, and if unpatched vulnerabilities in 10.6.8 are worse than those in 10.4.11, then I presume that, because fewer people use 10.4.11, nobody will attack it, whereas many people use 10.6.8 which makes it more attractive to hackers.
Therefore, my question is this:  did 10.5.x and/or 10.6.x (and their respective Safari versions) introduce new security vulnerabilities that are not present in 10.4.11, or are all of Snow Leopard's (or Safari 5.1.10's) critical security vulnerabilities inherited from earlier versions such as Tiger?

Most people would likely disagree with me, & although higher versions of OSX got Security fixes, I think older is or can be made more secure.
TenFourFox for PPC & Firefox for Intel is a more advanced Browser than Safari in either version.
I consider Little Snitch essential for security also in 10.4.11 to 10.10.2
There are also some security fixes for 10.4, 10.5, 10.6 that you can apply yourself, here's a link to Bash fixes & maybe ntpd fixes...

The security slot means you can use a notebook style cable to lock it down. That will slow down someoe or at least make them go and get a bolt cutter. A lock on the office door woud help too.
But the most importent things are
    1) Back up you data and keep it locked up someplace not near the computer.
    2) Mac OX has a feature where you can encrypt all your data. Encrypted data
is usless to whoever steels it.

  • To Secure Mac or not to secure Mac??????

I am fairly new to Mac, switching over from PC, and one of the biggest hurdles that I have come across is protection of the computer. Is it advisable to get a protection for Anti-Spyware, Adware and Virus protection for this system. If so does anyone have any suggestions as to which are the best one to use.
When I ask at the Apple Store they always say that none of that is necessary and I was just wondering what the people out there that have been using Mac, think.
I figure that it can't hurt to have it, but if it is just waisted space on my computer that can possibly slow down the computer, then why have it if not needed.
I thank all of you in advance for help in this matter........Apps224

Welcome to Apple Discussions and welcome to Mac
While there are no known viruses that attack Mac OS X at the present time it is possible (though improbable) for other malware to get onto your Mac.
So I go to lenghts to protect my user. A hosed system can be replaced but a compromised user folder is compromised forever. Along with all your important data like bank records, credit cards, ... I.e. your "identity" stolen.
The best way to avoid that is by being a frustrating target. Use your built-in firewall which is industrial strength and/or a hard wired router, downloading only from "trusted" sites, installing all security updates and being careful about what you give administrative power to.
Don't use Limewire or any other P2P service to download your software, get it from reputable sources. In addition, always keep at least your users backed up, preferably a clone of your entire system on a separate disk. And put your sensitive passwords, bank accounts, credit card numbers in a "secure note" in a new keychain or in an encrypted folder.
If and when a Mac virus does appear it will be headline news and you can download the AV software then. If you feel you have to run an AV program I'd suggest ClamXav a mac friendly freeware app that is very stable with OS X. It will check for known virus signatures at any rate.
    Hope this helps.

  • Port-security MAC address restrictions and flexconnect

Hi - has anyone else seen this issue?
We use port-security on flexconnect ports limiting the maximum mac addresses to 100. The ports are configured so that the native vlan is the AP management vlan and we tag the wireless client vlan.
Recently we had an issue where we were seeing MAC address restriction violations on the ports connected to AP's. Although we could not see the violations happen in realtime they were in the switch logs. In Cisco Prime we checked the client counts on the AP's and they were less than 10 at that time the error occurred.
We then increased the max mac addresses to 200 and still saw the same issue. Removing port-security seemed to fix the problem.
This was the model and version of the switches.

  • Firefox 17.0 for Mac OS X missing Preferences- Applications- Preview Doc (application/PDF) entry to set behavior for PDF files

I want to set Firefox to automatically download or save a PDF without the panel coming up to ask me. However, when I go to Firefox->Preferences->Applications there is no entry for PDF files to set it to open or save the file without asking me (i.e., no Preview Document (application/PDF).
I am using Firefox 17.0 with Mac OS X 10.6.8 using Intel Core 2 Duo

I have .pdf associated with Preview. The issue is that in Firefox->Preferences-> Application tab does NOT contain an entry for Preview Document ((application/PDF) which is needed to do an association that will occur automatically every time Firefox encounters a doc of that type. (the application tab has Preview Document (image/<6 types>) but no entry for the PDF format.

If you are referring to malware, see my Mac Malware Guide. (Fair disclosure: I may receive compensation from links to my sites, TheSafeMac.com and AdwareMedic.com, in the form of buttons allowing for donations. Donations are not required to use my site or software.)
Long story short, Macs are far from invulnerable, but if you follow safe online practices and are careful what you download, you'll probably never see any malware. Unless something changes significantly for the worse, of course.

    Hellow all!

    switchport port-security maximum 3
    switchport port-security mac-address pc_mac
    switchport port-security mac-address ip_phone_mac
    switchport port-security mac-address ip_phone_mac vlan voice
How i can add one mac in two VLAN's on HP 3800 Switch?

  • Port security detecting two MACs on 1 machine.

I am using port security on several 2950 switches to prevent unauthorized moves on the network. Currently, there are several hundred computers that do not have a problem. Here is my current config for each port:
    Version 12.1(19)EA1
    switchport mode access
    switchport port-security
    switchport port-security maximum 1
    switchport port-security violation shutdown
    switchport port-security mac-address sticky
I am working with two users who each have old laptops (the only thing I can see in common). Their ports keep getting shutdown due to MAC address violations. The users swear up and down that their computers have NOT moved or been uplugged. I reset the secure MAC on one port and the user was able to work about 30 minutes before being locked out again. Indeed, it does show a different MAC address as "last source address". I even have eye witnesses (manager's sitting by desk) saying they saw nobody at his desk.
Now, is there a chance something on the computer would cause the MAC address to change? He does have a modem, but I don't see this causing problems. I am very confused why only these two computers would be having problems. Honestly, I don't think the users are trying to pull a fast one.
Since I have changed the max count to 2, I have not seen another MAC address show up on that port. I'm sure if I put it down to 1 again, it will lock out eventally.
    Anybody ran into this before?
    Thanks.
    Brett

After a month or so of testing, port security issues still exist in 12.1(12c)EA1 (although false triggers have slowed). Seems to be about 1 out of 100 computers or so. I set the violation to "restrict" to monitor the situation and alleviate the users frustrations of being shutoff every 30 min or so during the workday. Here is some interesting results I see in the log history. This log is over the course of 24 hours since I changed it to restrict.
    interface FastEthernet0/1
    switchport mode access
    switchport port-security
    switchport port-security violation restrict
    switchport port-security mac-address sticky
    switchport port-security mac-address sticky 00e0.988a.7ee6
    no ip address
Secure Port MaxSecureAddr CurrentAddr SecurityViolation Security Action
    (Count) (Count) (Count)
    Fa0/1 1 1 3 Restrict
2w4d: %PORT_SECURITY-2-PSECURE_VIOLATION: Security violation occurred, caused by
MAC address 5463.0007.eb9e on port Fa0/1.
2w4d: %PORT_SECURITY-2-PSECURE_VIOLATION: Security violation occurred, caused by
MAC address 0000.0007.eb9e on port Fa0/1.Invalid address secure address
2w4d: %PORT_SECURITY-2-PSECURE_VIOLATION: Security violation occurred, caused by
MAC address 3a20.0007.eb9e on port Fa0/1.Invalid address secure address
Notice how all 3 violating MACS have similarities. Nobody can tell me that this is 3 different machines. Since replacing all the NICs is not an option, setting the violation to "restrict" seems to be the workaround although it will shut down int temp throughout the day. Port security is absolutly needed.
    Thanks for the response Thomas.
