Security Mode option: "Capture (wlansec. wpapersharekey) WPA Personal" ?

Hi, I'm trying to support my father remotely and was reviewing his security setup over the phone, making sure everything was still okay. He has the wrt54g (I think v5 and I don't know the firmware version) - and in Wireless> Wireless Security> Security Mode he has "Capture(wlansec.wpapersharekey)WPA Personal" selected. When I set this up 6 months ago, I don't recall if I selected that and thought the docs were misprinted - or what.
I didn't bother to have my father tell me what the other choices were as I was perplexed and thought that since it says "WPA Personal" everything is normal (and since wireless connectivity works, it seems he is, in fact, using WPA). But is this setting normal? I cannnot find out any information about this setting in the docs, on this forum, google, etc. Even linksys phone support did not know. All documentation says to select "WPA Personal". Is this the same thing? Is what I'm seeing a setting in the older firmware maybe? Note - we have not upgraded firmware since the router was bought 6 months ago (lazyness).
The client is a mac.
Thanks
Nancy C.

it is really normal for your router's interface to display that script of "Capture(wlansec.wpapersharekey)WPA Personal" when you are viewing that on a MAC computer.. but on the windows  (xp, 2k, ME, 98, 95, etc), it'll disaplay the normal script...

  • Does OS 10.3 support Security Mode WPA?

My niece has a Linksys wireless router which I cannot figure out how to connect to. She is in Windows XP. It says that its security mode is WPA-Personal. Encryption method is TKIP. And then there is an encryption key. I cannot figure out any way to know if my G4 powerbook running OS 10.3.9 supports this or where or how to enter the encryption key.
With airport running, I have been able to "see" their network. And I can get to a dialog box that prompts me for a name and password. I have entered their name and their password but I still cannot connect.
When I am at home, I have a Lynksys wireless router and have no trouble connecting. I have exhausted all possibilities that I can think of. Any help?
    Thanks.

I'm answering my own question here because I found out something very hidden but very useful.
First of all, WPA is supported in OS10.3. Secondly, I was able to connect to a Windows based, WPA security protected wireless network. The first key was to download the latest Airport update available for your computer. I cannot recall the version number that worked for me but it came up recently when I ran software update. (I've been searching the apple updates pages but cannot find it. I think it was in Security Update 2006-007 - but run software update and look for Airport). Then, to make the connection, open Internet Connect. Hold down the option key and click on the Network drop down. This gave me a WPA-Personal option that was not there before. Initially, there was a double sized field to type an encryption key. However, it would not allow me to enter anything. I repeated the process and then got a field to enter a password. Instead of entering the password, you have to enter the encryption key. You'll have to get that from the person whose wireless network you are trying to connect to. Upon entering that I got connected. I wish I could be more specific but I can't locate the info I found to get me to this point. It was in a discussion group and I've been searching for the past 40 minutes without success. I initially found it using someone else's computer. If I find more I'll post it.

  • Security Mode Reverts back to "Disabled"

I am NOT able to change the wireless security mode of my router (WRT54G-V5) from "Disabled" to "WPA-Personal" or any other mode. After I select the "WPA-Personal" option from the drop-down menu, the page refreshes automatically and the security mode changes back to "Disabled".
Your help is very much appreciated.
    FYI:
I have tried all the following but still could not change the security mode:
    1. Master resetting the router
    2. Upgraded the firmware to the latest version
    3. Tried mutiple browsers
    4. Disabled "Wireless Access  Web" under Administraion/Management settings. System is only cable connected.

You mentioned in your post that you upgraded the firmware. So, after firmware update did you reset the Router? After successful firmware upgrade you need to reset the router. It is recommended to reset the router once. Steps to reset the router:
Push the reset button on router for 30 seconds, turn off the router wait for 30 seconds and then power it on. Power light should blink when you perform the reset process.
After reset, reconfigure the router and then check whether the issue still persists.

  • Power Mac G3 Pismo with Airport wireless card in Mac OS X 10.4 won't connect to wireless network  with  newest Airport Extreme Base Station set at WPA Personal/WPA 2 Personal encryption.

My Power Book G3 Pismo with an Airport wireless card  running Mac OS X 10.4.11 will not connect to my new Airport
Extreme Base Station using WPA Personal/WPA 2 Person encryption.  The Airport firmware is version 9.52.  From
posts I've read online at different places indicates the Airport card should support the WPA encryption.  Perhaps the problem
is the Base Station is using a combination setting and the fault is in the base station?
    Thanks for any suggestions

Perhaps an inexpensive usb wireless adapter would work as well?
This is probably the simplest way to get the G3 connected to the wireless network.
I'll have to read up on getting an express and using it as a wireless bridge as I am unfamiliar with the concept.
The new AirPort Extreme is broadcasting a wireless signal.
A new AirPort Express could be located close to the G3. The Express will pick up the wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme, then provide an Ethernet connection to the G3 though a short Ethernet cable.
This can work very well......IF.....you keep the G3 at a fixed location, since it will always be connected to the AriPort Express using an Ethernet cable.
I do have an old Linksys Wireless G router.  I wonder if that would work?
In theory, yes. But it would have to use much older WEP "security", which is easily cracked in minutes using free tools available on the Internet. So, anyone who really wanted to get on the network could do so. It's an option, but not a very good one.

  • Connecting to WPA personal

I setup a SMC WGBR14 to use WPA(personal) encryption. Somehow, it seems I've created a keychain with the wrong password, but I can't locate it in the keychain application. I can find the login for my old wireless router, but not the new one.
Thinking I had incorrectly setup the wireless portion of the router, I reset the router to default factory settings. While I could "see" the router thru Internet Connect, each time I select the router the connection fails and a msg appears that the connection failed (or some such).
I have setup a preferred network in Preferences/Network for the new network using the WPA log-in code.
The router is setup to use mixed modes (n, g & b).
The puzzling issue is I successfully setup an Aluminum PB 1.67mHz and it connects to the SMC router without a problem.

    I deleted:
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.networkConnect.000a9567 6db0.plist
    as well as:
    com.apple.PrefPane.Network.000a958f7bd2.plist
    com.apple.PrefPane.Network.000a95676db0.plist
    com.apple.PrefPane.Network.000393c81662.plist
I am on my Third network name. I have tried default network name with no wireless protection.
I have used the Other option and when I did that, tagging the network as WPA(personal) I received a msg:
The wireless network "blah-blah" does not support the requested encryption method.<<</div>
Well, that's not right because another computer is using the setup router name, encryption method and password.
    I'm stuck!!!

  • Cant get Security Mode to work on WRT54G

I have everything set up fine.. internet working etc but I cannot get security mode to work.. I go to click on WEP, WPA.. whatever and it just autos back to DISABLED.. Anyone to fix this?

how many computers do you have?
try to use other computers in setting up the security. check also the firmware of your router.make sure you have the latest one.

  • WRTG42 v1 Need help with changing the Security Mode

I need to change my wireless security mode but for some reason whenever I try to change anything the website automatically puts what ever I changed back to normal.  Basically, I try to change an option and the website changes the option back instantly. Has anyone else had this issue? And if so, can you please walk me through what you did? Thanks!

Try using a different browser and make sure you click on Save Settings after changing security settings. Here's a link for detailed instructions.

  • I am not having problems with wifi but ipad will not accept my password in the secure mode. anyone else having the same problem?

I am having problems with the Ipad accepting my password in the secure mode in Wifi. I can get into wifi when the secure mode is off. This only started when I downloaded the lastest update for the Ipad. Anyone else having the same problems?  I have rebooted the Rotar and still doesn't work.

    I am not.
Which secure mode are you using with your wireless network - WEP or WPA?
Have you tried forgetting this network on your iPad, and/or resetting network settings on your iPad? Both will require rejoining the network and the latter will require rejoining every wi-fi network your iPad has access to when returning within range of the network.

  • WPA Personal password- no "okay"

I am attempting to join a new wireless network. I know I have the network name and password correct. I click on the airport icon, select the network, and type in the password. The problem is, the "OK" button never changes from grey (i.e. I cannot click it). The wireless security type is WPA personal.
    Argh, help! Thanks.

Hi musselshells, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Is this under the Airport icon>Join Other, in Network Prefs>Airport>Airport tab, or in Internet Connect?

  • Auto Logoff while in Shared Services Security Mode

Pretty simple question but I still haven't found the answer.
My client's essbase server is set up in Shared Services Security Mode, so now the auto logoff options for the server don't apply. Is there a way to set this via shared services? Or is there some other means perhaps?
    Thanks for your time.

Essbase will be default be in shared services security mode in 11.1.2, the wizard will not migrate security when in this mode.
It is possible to revert it back but if you don't know the process then it is worth looking at alternatives first.
You could use LCM to export the provisioning and then import into your target environment.
    Cheers

  • Scale 802.1X ACS in High Security Mode any Idea's?

    Scenario
    Platform ACS V 5.1.0.44
    Switch 4510R with 8 48 port modules (384 ports)
802.1x authentication of the ports in High Security Mode (VLAN assignments required)
Authentication Method Cert based eap-tls to machine
we currently have 4 Data Vlans that users and assets drop into on this switch
How do I scale this as I cant differentiate the cert to distribute the users across the 4 vlans in ACS?
I think I can use unique Identity groups for the MAB of assets but the users has me really scratching my head.

Looks like a Switching group has been looking at this as a possible answer for the stack switches but I cant configure vlan groups on 4510's
and would theres no config guide on how to apply it in ACS 5.1 (use attrib 81 like we do for vlan assignment?)
    12.2(52)SE
IEEE 802.1x User Distribution to allow deployments with multiple VLANs (for a group of users) to improve scalability of the network by load balancing users across different VLANs. Authorized users are assigned to the least populated VLAN in the group, assigned by RADIUS server.
    12.2(52)SE
    3750-E, 3560-E
But then you get bit with even using VLAN assignments on large stacks
•When IEEE 802.1x authentication with VLAN assignment is enabled, a CPUHOG message might appear if the switch is authenticating supplicants in a switch stack.
The workaround is not use the VLAN assignment option. (CSCse22791)

  • EAS: Security mode

Hi all, I installed EAS 11.1.1
While configuring essbase server, I specified "Deploy Essbase in standalone mode"
As I understand it relates to Essbase server not to Administration Server.
When I see in EAS console -> Administration Servers -> myadmserver -> properties: configuration tab-> shared services properties:
there is a locked "Shared services security mode" checked checkbox.
"Shared services security mode" is checked because it was registered with shared services. Am I right?
On which step it was registered while configuring? (I didn't see any option like "register with shared services", I only saw this in the configuration confirmation window)
    Can I unregister it?
Edited by: Vovanenok on 13.02.2009 3:03

    Hi,
If you ticked "Deploy essbase in standalone mode" then essbase will be using Native security and will not have been converted to Shared services mode.
By default in V11 EAS will get registered with Shared Services.
I am not sure what the problem is because you will be able to add members to essbase directly through EAS and will not have to use Shared services.
    Cheers

  • Security Mode Cisco 7921

What Security mode on the Cisco 7921 is recommended? EAP FAST?
    Thanks
    Justin

Yes is based on customer requirements. If going the 802.1x route, would suggest EAP-FAST, PEAP or EAP-TLS. Can then use WPA or WPA2 depending on the level of security and encryption required. However, when using 802.1x, we recommend to implement CCKM (fast roaming), which is supported only with WPA(TKIP). Some customers rather go with the standards (i.e. PEAP vs EAP-FAST). In the future the 7921, will be able to do server validation as well by installing the authentication server certificate. For EAP-TLS, this requires higher management due to having to issue client certificates.

  • Essbase native security mode and MSAD users

    Hi guys,
I'm trying to solve following question:
I need to keep Essbase in native security mode, ie. to assign security for users directly in EAS, not in HSS console. And I need to grant access to MSAD users, ie. to allow users to connect to Essbase using their MSAD usernames and passwords.
    How to do that?
    Thanks!
    Vladino

You don't state what release you're on -- I think it varies slightly from release to release although the concept is mostly the same.
Have you read this in the EAS help?
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/eas_help/extauthen.html
I think this help is missing the step where you tell Essbase what the external authenticators are. From reading about the AUTHENTICATIONMODULE Essbase.cfg setting:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/esb_tech_ref/authenticationmodule.html
    It seems that:
When you run Oracle's Hyperion Enterprise Performance Management System Configurator, Essbase is automatically registered with Shared Services (unless you select the option to deploy Essbase in standalone mode) and this setting is automatically added to essbase.cfg.So I'm not quite sure where that leaves you -- where do you config the external authentication? Hopefully someone more installation-centric than I (which would be just about everyone in the known universe) can jump in here. I have to say that I haven't used non-Shared Services authentication since System 9 came out -- it just makes life too easy for my clients to manage security in one place.
