"Security preferences" blocking widget download ... HELP!

I  tried to download a dashboard widget from the Apple web site and my "security preferences" would not allow me to open the file since it did not come from the App store.  That seems silly.  What can I do?  I really want the "tea timer" widget!

Control-click it and choose Open, or open the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences and shut that option off.

You can change the settings in Security & Privacy to "Anywhere"...
That should work... as to whether the printer driver will work, that's another question.

    1. If you just want to run one application, control-click it and choose Open instead of changing the setting. This only needs to be done once per application.
    2. Ensure that you trust any software you choose to open in this way.

    Hello.
I have a Mac 10.8.5 version. I am a web developer student and I need to download a program called Handbrake, but according to my computer specifications, I can't download it until I change my security preferences. How can I change my security preferences so I can download Handbrake?

    Hello Japib and Niel.
Thank you for your prompt responses. I could not do what you instructed because I did not have that option. I've attached three screenshots for you to see. The are two different versions of the General options section:

I have an iPhone4s. When I install apps, I have to give my Apple password first.  That’s okay. The last few apps I tried to download have opened another security window before they will install.  The window says, “Security info Required.  To help insure the security of your Apple ID we require additional information”  When I select okay, the Apple ID Password window opens and asks for my Apple password a second time.
It doesn't happen with every app and I’m concerned that these apps may be trying to collent my password.  Is Apple really doing a double check on my password?

  • Our business require to download & install SAP Java GUI 720. Able to download it but not to install due to "security preferences" restriction. Any suggestion?

GE Energy requires us to use SAP for business. I downloaded the SAP Java GUI 720, can see it in the download window. But once I try to install it, the following message is shown: "SAP Java GUI 720 MacOSX.JAR” can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. Your security preferences allow installation of only apps from the Mac App Store and identified developers."
Please let me know if there is a way to change the security settings in order to install SAP on MacBook Air.

    Hello,
To change the security settings go to:
'''System Preferences''' >''' Security & Privacy'''.
On the '''General Tab''' click the '''little lock''' in the lower left corner to '''unlock the general preference pane'''. Then select the ''''Anywhere'''' radio button beneath "'''Allow applications downloaded from'''" then confirm.
If you need more assistance just ask for it :)
    Sincerly,
    Black Thunder.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Connecting your MacBook Pro and your MacBook Air will be the fastest way, but you have to spend money on cables and adapters (also, your MacBook Pro doesn't support Thunderbolt).
As you have a Time Capsule, one thing you can do is to start your MacBook Pro and make a Time Machine backup. Then, turn on your MacBook Air and set it up. Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so select the option to restore the backup from the Time Capsule and be patient. This can take a lot of time if you have to migrate a lot of files

  • Why won't widgets download in mavericks

I'm trying to download some different widgets into my dashboard, but a lot of them (all of the ones I've tried) are from unknown developers. They are in the widget center, but when I download them they arent recognized developers. I figure its that the widget hasn't been updated for Mav, but is anyone else experiencing this?

Some apps downloaded and installed from the Internet could adversely affect your Mac. Gatekeeper helps protect your Mac from such apps. Read this article to learn about Gatekeeper and its options.
Gatekeeper is a new feature in Mountain Lion and OS X Lion v10.7.5 that builds on OS X's existing malware checks to help protect your Mac from malware and misbehaving apps downloaded from the Internet.
The safest and most reliable place to download and install apps is via the Mac App Store. Apple reviews each app before it's accepted by the store, and if there's ever a problem with an app, Apple can quickly remove it from the store.
For apps that are downloaded from places other than the Mac App Store, developers can get a unique Developer ID from Apple and use it to digitally sign their apps. The Developer ID allows Gatekeeper to block apps created by malware developers and verify that apps haven't been tampered with since they were signed. If an app was developed by an unknown developer—one with no Developer ID—or tampered with, Gatekeeper can block the app from being installed.
Note: If you have an app that has not been signed with a Developer ID  to support Gatekeeper, contact the developer of the app to determine if they offer an update which supports Gatekeeper.
Malware detection (not Gatekeeper) uses what is known as a "deny list" technique to prevent known malware from running on your Mac. Unique attributes of identified malware are added to this list. If you attempt to open an app on the deny list, you will see a message informing you about it.
Note: If an app with a revoked Gatekeeper certificate is already installed, it will continue to run.
Important: Developer ID signature applies to apps downloaded from the Internet. Apps from other sources, such as file servers, external drives, or optical discs are exempt, unless the apps were originally downloaded from the Internet.
    Gatekeeper options
Gatekeeper gives you more control over what you install. You can choose the safest option and only allow apps that come from the Mac App Store to open. There is also the option of only allowing apps that come from the Mac App Store and identified developers. Or you can choose to allow any apps to open, just like previous versions of OS X.
Gatekeeper options are found in Apple menu > System Preferences… > Security & Privacy > General tab under the header "Allow applications downloaded from:"
Note: The default setting for Gatekeeper in OS X Lion v10.7.5 is "Anywhere".
    Gatekeeper options are:
Mac App Store – Only apps that came from the Mac App Store can open.
Mac App Store and identified developers (default in OS X Mountain Lion) – Only allow apps that came from the Mac App Store and developers using Gatekeeper can open.
Anywhere – Allow applications to run regardless of their source on the Internet (default in OS X Lion v10.7.5); Gatekeeper is effectively turned off. Note: Developer ID-signed apps that have been inappropriately altered will not open, even with this option selected.
How to open an app from a unidentified developer and exempt it from Gatekeeper
If you are confident the app downloaded from the Internet is the latest version and is from a source you trust, you can open an app from an unidentified developer by following these steps.
Important: Some Apple screened apps from developers that are in the process of acquiring Developer ID signatures will present the "Open" option when they are double-clicked.
Note: In most cases, you will only have to perform these steps once for all user accounts on the Mac:
In Finder, Control-click or right click the icon of the app.
Select Open from the top of contextual menu that appears.
Click Open in the dialog box. If prompted, enter an administrator name and password.
Note: If there is an app that presents multiple Gatekeeper dialog boxes, you can temporarily use Gatekeeper's "Always" option. Make sure to restore the Gatekeeper option that was there before to bring back Gatekeeper function.

  • Problem with widget download on Dashboard

I can't download widgets on my Dashboard. My security preferences don't permit widget downloads. What can I do?

One work-around would be to unlock the window, change the setting to "Anywhere" then install your widgets, then put the setting back to where it was. (The fact that the window re-locks itself is normal.)
But, you should be able to authorize the opening of the widgets on a case by case basis using the open command in the menu which appears when you control click on the widget.  I just tried it to be sure. I downloaded a widget, I control-clicked it, then I selected "Open". I then got this (without the red oval):
    This doesn't happen for you?

  • Security Preferences Pane does not open

    Hi,
after installing Snow Leopard my Security Preferences Pane is not working anymore. When clicking on the security preferences I got the message that it is loading, but it is never opened.
In the logs I found the following messages:
Nov 15 21:31:46 fsmac quicklookd[331]: [QL] Can not get the user cache directory 'Permission denied'
    Nov 15 21:31:47 fsmac /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ATS.framewo rk/Support/fontd[332]: confstr failed for CS_DARWIN_USER_CACHEDIR

Nov 15 21:33:49 fsmac com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.locationd): Throttling respawn: Will start in 1 seconds
The last of these is repeated forever(?) and lots of crash reports are written. An example is attached to this message. Maybe the problem is related to my other question http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2234567&tstart=0.
I have no clue how to fix the problem and I'd be very happy if some of you has a suggestion.

    Hello Johannes,
    Delete this file.
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences.
Move that fille to the Trash and restart your Mac.
If that doesn't help, create or logon to another user account and see if the problem exists there also.
If it doesn't, then the issue is system wide, otherwise it's isolated to your user account only.
System wide or not you could download and install the 10.6.2 combo update and see if that helps. You can do this even if you are already running 10.6.2. It contains fixes that might help.

After the installation, repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
