Security/Privacy Forum

I would like to see Apple begin a Forum for issues specifically related to Security/Privacy related issues...is this something in the works?

If you wanted to post questions about security/privacy in the Mac OS, just post those in the forum for the version of the Mac OS that you're using. If it's more related to security when browsing the web, the Safari forum is the appropriate place for such questions.

  • Automatically locks security & privacy

Help. I know my passcode to the computer but whenever I enter it to the security & privacy tab under system preferences it unlocks for about half a second and locks itself without me doing anything. It works with any other tabs such as parental controls. My mac is running v10.10 Yosemite. Thanks everyone

  • 'Send To Kindle' Security & Privacy Accessibility - Strange - 'installd' ?

Just received an update notification for 'Send To Kindle'. So, I updated  the 'Send To Kindle' App.
It installed into Security & Privacy for Accessibility the app named 'installd'? What a horrible name! With that name I would guess it is spy ware!.
    Has anybody else noticed this?
I would like to remove it from this preferences.
    I've checked out these references:
Reset App Access to OS X Privacy Data from the Command Line
How do I remove an app from...: Apple Support Communities
    Thanks in advance.
    P.S.
Already posted on Amazon Forum and Chatted with their on-line no-support.

Yes, that makes sense it runs during installs, thus the name installd. With the d at the end I would venture to guess it is a daemon process. As shown in the picture it is unchecked.
As an installation process why would it show up in the 'Security & Preferences'  Pane for Accessibility?
Also, when I query the the tcc.db
           select * from access;
All the other programs listed show up but not the program 'installd'
Thus deleting via sqlite or tccutil will not  work. But, yet, it is there?

  • Can't open Security & Privacy preference pane?...please help.

    Hi All,
I would be grateful if anyone could assist... I can't seem to open the security & privacy preference pane.  I receive the following "Preferences Error" upon trying to click the icon in my system preferences:
First click: You can’t open Security & Privacy preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac.
Second click: Could not load Security & Privacy preference pane.
I noticed the issue this past week when I installed some monitor callibration software.  After downloading, the software's interface text did not load (it was simply blank for the drop down menus).  The manufacturer tried to help me by clearing font cache and such, but that was not the issue.  When he next directed me to the S&P pane, that's when I noticed I couldn't open it to adjust anything.
    * I did go into Users & Groups and created a new admin user.  I was then able to open the Security & Privacy pane, and load the monitor calibration software without any problems, so it seems to be a user issue I suppose?  Tried to trash some security preferences, reinstalled 10.8.2, but with no luck.
    Thanks for your assistance!

Try booting into the Safe Mode.  Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This does some maintenance routines and 3rd party applications don't load. Sometimes 3rd party applications are the problem. If your normal user account works in Safe Mode, it is probably a 3rd part application.

  • How do i disable "change password" in "security & privacy"

Hi... i think something might be wrong... I have a standard account (for a child) that is locked down by parental controls by an admin user. I've locked changing the password - "Disable changing the password"... The lock icon is locked for users and groups in the standard account - so that works.
However if i goto System Preferences/Security & Privacy/General/Change Password it allows for changing of the standard account password and does not require the admin password.
Really? Can anybody else confirm this? How do I lock this also?
    thanks in advance.

    This isn't an answer.
You aren't the only one seeing this behavior. If you monitor the "More Like This" box (top right), other threads appear. Opening them usually displays other threads.
You might want to submit feedback to Apple so they are aware of the problem:

  • Cannot access security & privacy

    hey all
please can you help me with this 'all of a sudden" problem that i have encountered that is driving me absolutely insane.
i am trying to access the security and privacy setting under the system preferences tab but when i click on the icon a message pops up saying :
"You can’t open Security & Privacy preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac."
i have no idea where this came from!!
Is it because I have updated to the latest version of OSx mountain Lion??

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then drag or copy the text — do not type it — into the Terminal window and press return:
    file -b /System/Library/PreferencePanes/Security.prefPane/Contents/MacOS/Security
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.

  • Java & security/Privacy Problem

    Hello
wonder if you could help or give advice
(An idiots answer for a idiot like me is prefered)
when using a fully Anonymous proxy even with
    (Cookie via java script:;Private )
web Browser and sun java shows your real IP in java ip
fetch scripts and makes direct connect to your private box
    {For Example:}
    http://www.rental-web.com/~azuma/cgi-bin/env.cgi
yet Internet Explorer and MS-Java with the same webpage and
the same proxy loads the applet but blocks the ip fetch
and just shows "UnKnown" in the java applet
is there anyway of altering the sun java install to give
    the same security/privacy ?
Hope You can help as i would like use sun java
but this one small thing is putting me off as my firewall probes
    with scripted webpages is annoying
    Thanks
    Dig

Or can i maybe edit the sun java install so all java
traffic is forced via the proxy ?
instead of it being able to circumnavigate the proxy
    as it is now
pointless trying to secure your box if the backdoor
    is left open

  • System Preferences 'Security & Privacy' Pane Automatically opens on login

I see there are a number of threads with System Preference pane problems in Mavericks - and while I've never had the problems other people are reporting with buttons not working, ever since installing Mavericks, the 'Security & Privacy' pane of my System Preferences pane always appears at login/startup, no matter what my settings are - with the 'Accessibility' section highlighted. Any Ideas?
(I also have the duplicate icon issue in the menu bar - with Ink specifically - but that's another thread...)

  • Security & Privacy preference pane Error Mavericks -- NOT WORKING

    Please Help!
I get this very worring error in Mavericks, which I just installed

Our preference panes seem to be identical.
There are two other things you might want to investigate:
    1) Although this is unlikely, look in /Library/PreferencePanes to see if for some reason there might be another copy of Security.prefPane.
    2) Another possibility may be that a settings file is corrupted.  One such file seems to be in your account's Library folder.  In the Finder hold down an "option" key while you pull down the "Go" menu, then select "Library".  In the resulting window open "Preferences".  Find the file com.apple.systempreferences.plist.  With System Preferences not running, drag that file to the Desktop.  Then see if you can access the Security & Privacy panel.

  • Cant change password in Security & Privacy

Im trying to change apps that control my computer but I can no longer get access to privacy settings in "security & privacy."   I couldnt remember my old appleID password so just changed which means I cant update the login password in the general settings either.
Is anyone able to help me out?

That doesnt work unfortunately.  I have just changed my appleID but it still doesnt work.
From what I can see I have a login password set in the security & privacy panel but when I go to change the password I get prompted for my old password first, which I have forgotten.  Since there is no way to reset this im stuck between a rock and hard place it seems.

  • Security & Privacy preference pane not opening

All of my system preferences panes work except Security & Privacy. This has been broken since installing 10.9.0 and 10.9.1 hasn't fixed it. Pane tries to open then gives the error, "There was an error in Security & Privacy preference pane." Looked through other posts for solutions but nothing seems to work. Tried creating a new user account, deleting caches, systempreferences.plist. Took into Apple Store and they suggested restoring from TimeMachine backup but that did not fix it. Been dealing with this for a while but now I really need to install an unsigned app and can't get to the security pane to allow it.

Our preference panes seem to be identical.

  • Can't unlock security & privacy pane

    Hi Guys,
    Running Yosemite 10.10.2.
I am trying to unlock the security and privacy pane in system preferences. I provide my credentials, the padlock unlocks briefly, but then locks again. I have a password on my account and have even tried setting up a second test account (also with a password).
    Any suggestions?

There are 2 work arounds for this issue
1 Set a password for account then security/privacy tabs will unlock like normal
2 Without password set you can click to unlock then when authentication box appears use return to ok it and immediately click on any security/privacy tab you literally have a split second to do this but it works
This issue has been apparent in:
    10.10
    10.10.1
    10.10.2
This has helped some people though this is first I have encountered the wont unlock with with admin account password entered

  • Unable To Change Security/Privacy Level Settings

I have a MacBook Pro running 10.5.1 (ran the latest updates). When I launch iChat 4.0, I can't add buddies, I can't show status in the menu bar nor (and the most important), I can't set my Security Privacy level. My entire Security window has every selection grayed out. None of the Privacy Level radio buttons are selected which means I can't see any of my buddies online. My buddies are listed and it shows my account available but that's it. I've already deleted all the apple.ichat prefs, rebooted (and relaunched) and tried changing the settings both logged in and off. Help! I need a fix please. Thanks.
    Mike

    Hi,
    I have a theory.
    I have no hard evidence.
    But....
The firewall in 10.5 was reported as not working properly and if Set to Specific apps was in fact Allowing All
Now you are updated to 10.5.1
I have a suspicion that if left at the 10.5 setting the firewall is not properly updated.
Your symptoms suggest you are not logged into AIM fully/properly as the Security tab is only active when you are logged in.
    I would do the following.
Use the Logout of AIM item in the iChat Menu list.
Quit iChat as this tends to rebuild the iChat .plists on closing.
I would go to the Mac Firewall and set it to Allow All (if different)
I would then Set it to All Specific and restart iChat.
If this fails remove iChatAgent from the allow list and Quit iChat and restart it which should put iChatAgent back in the firewall list.
If this does not work I would delete all apps from the Mac Firewall - set it to Allow All and then back again and add iChat and allow it to add iChatAgent.
If this still fails I would then delete the com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist that hold the AIM login as there is still the possibility it is corrupt but may need the firewall sorted first.
    Summary.
I am suggesting it is a set of circumstances that may need a specific approach to sort and are asking you to test this out.
In essence this is to reset the firewall and possibly delete the .plist involved.

  • HT1338 loading security & privacy

Still stuck on loading Security & poilcy. I checked and it said no responsing. How long should I wait? It happens after i do filevault. I realized it is slow system. I tried to go back to disabled. I can't get in that security & policy and it kept loading and no response.
What can i do about it?

I think you misinterpreted.  This command "sudo spctl --master-disable" solved my problem of not being able to install PLAY which did NOT come from the Apple Store but was downloaded from the SoundsOnline.com website.
    Let me try to rephrase.
    1) Downloaded PLAY update
    2) Tried to install and got message that I could NOT install because it didn't come from Apple Store
    3) Went to System Preferences and clicked Security & Privacy
    4) Got "Loading Security & Privacy ..." in status bar, but the screen never displayed (like it was stuck)
    5) Looked online for solution
    6) Found that I could still install downloaded file from SoundsOnline if I typed in Termainal sudo spctl --master-disable
    7) Typed in Terminal sudo spctl --master-disable then tried to install downloaded PLAY file
    8) It worked!!!  Software installed
    9) Typed in Terminal sudo spctl --master-enable to reactivate it.
System Preferences is still stuck ONLY when I click "Security & Privacy".  Nothing happens.
Hope this made it more clear
