How do I get a picture to stay when I move and scale it for my home screen?

Unfortunately that seems to be a known bug. And something we have to wait for APple to fix. THere are other threads on the same topic and some people have work arounds so you might want to poke around in the 'more like this' on the right.

  • Best free / cheap software for zipping files?

Is there any free / cheap software recommended for zipping files that works well with a Mac?

OS X includes an utility to compress and decompress ZIP files. It's called "Archive Utility" and it's stored on /System/Library/CoreServices, but you have to modify some settings.
To access to this utility, open a Finder window, select Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type /System/Library/CoreServices. Then, open "Archive Utility".
By default, this app compresses files in a CPGZ file, but you can modify this. Go to Archive Utility menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences, and choose "Zip archive" next to "Use archive format".
Then, to compress files, just close the Preferences window, and go to File menu (on the menu bar) > Create Archive. Finally, choose with the Command key the files you want to compress, and press "Archive", so a ZIP file will be created

  • Need to know what is the best and cheapest product for pure B&W only.

I am switching from fine art 4x5, B&W photography in the old fashioned chemical darkroom to pure digital.  I want to get the best professional Adobe program for this purpose at the best cost.  Not interested in any fancy manipulation beyond what I could do in the old chemical darkroom, simply want to produce the best "straight" black and white images in sizes up to 20x24.  Have a trial version of Lightroom and I've heard Adobe Camera Raw is a needed program also.  Any advise would be appreciated.

I got an early version of Silverfast with the scanner, but since I was getting such good results without it, I never tried it. What are it's advantages?
Since I don't have any experience with the Epson scan software I really can't compare, but you can get full details on the Lasersoft SilverFast scan software here:
    http://www.silverfast.com/
I have a Plustek Opticfilm 7600I Ai 35mm scanner that came bundled with SilverFast Ai. The biggest advantage is Multi-exposure function which takes two or more scans at different exposure levels and combines them to increase Dmax range. Dmax is where virtually ALL scanners fall short, except expensive ($5,000+) drum scanners. By extending Dmax with Multi-exposure the shadow areas (slide film) of the image have reduced noise and blocking. I couldn't even begin to scan Kodachrome slides without it! B&W negatives have lower contrast range, but Multi-exposure will surely improve the highlight detail (i.e. Negative images). There are also a number of different dust spot removal functions, including ICE. You need to check if ICE is actually supported on the target scanner and I believe it is not as effective with B&W negatives due to silver halide grain type. You' have to sort out the benefits of SilverFast that are applicable to B&W negatives versus the scanner manufacturer's software. IMHO the scanner bundles that include Silverfast (Epson 750-M) are the best bang for your buck. Some people swear by Vuescan:
    http://www.hamrick.com/
The benefit is that it is cheaper ($79.95) and I believe it can be used with multiple scanners. SilverFast requires a separate license for each scanner. Some links:

    http://www.dpug.org/forums/f6/epson-scan-vs-silverfast-vs-vuescan-1941/
Opinions on which is best vary more than the weather! IMHO for 35mm color film work SIlverfast Ai pulls the best capability out of my scanner. Here's a 3600dpi scan (4,833 x 3,240) of a 35mm Fujichrome Provia 100 slide showing a 100% crop (557 x 386). I use IT8 Ektachrome and Kodachrome calibration slides with SilverFast to create custom film profiles. It doesn't get any better than this, at least with 35mm film (double-click on the picture to see 1:1).

  • Recommendation for the Core router

    Hi all,
we are hosting provider and we are looking to buy additional router. Right now we have Cisco 6500 with SUP720-3BXL supervisor as a core router which sometimes has a problems because of very weak CPU.
Because of that we are searching for the real router, not switch.
    Basically our needs are:
    - at least 4 x 10Gbps ports
    - at least 80Mpps throughput
    - capable to deal with 2 Full BGP tables and at least 30 BGP peers
Any recommendation from your side would be appreciated. It could be also Juniper or Brocade.
Thank you very much in advance!

  • The best and stable solution for automounting?

There are several procedures for automounting disks and media devices here in Arch, particullary using udev and policy kit, autofs or fstab. I time by time face some problems with access to my second HD od to flashdisk and flashcard. This recently occured with the last upgrade. Static mounting is the best way for internal HD, so I add appropriate line in fstab and create a mountpoint (there are clear rules for permissions unique for fstab). Arch wiki for udev is also very clear to apply but no luck seeing my flashdisk icon on XFCE and LXDE desktop without acces to data. These DMs are activated by Slim in .xinitrc with ck-launch-session and dbus-launch. Fluxbox, in contrary, is started without policy kit and allow me to handle with flashdisk through XFE (both thunar and pcmanfm fail in mounting that). I do not use autofs nor pmount this time. Why automounting works well for year or more without any changes in configurations and after upgrade simply fails with no logic reason? Maybe I have a weak configuration of someting not complying with actual packages. But I have triple methods of automounting and only fstab for static volumes is rock-stable. The simpliest combination of fluxbox, XFE, udisks without policy kit also seems functional but with no services thunar and pcmanfm provide via policy kit.
My comp use all my family, so it is provided with all the DMs and several light WMs.
What is your best experience with automounting solution on your machines? Thank you all for sharing your tips and expanding wisdom!

Thanks for your quick response, Inxsible. Hmm, I have just used devmon with no effect. My problem is in wrong authentication for udisk operation invoked by any means. I followed man and added 99-my-admin-configuration.conf file, also with no effect. Well, I try to mix fstab with udisks/polkit for good reason - fstab is well-approved and sysupgrade-resistant providing thus longterm automounting standard for HD that do not change often. When udiskie and devmon are suggested, why have them (or a better from the two) in AUR? By the way, I have deleted udev rule for automounting with absolutely no change comparing to with the rule state before. System must be consistent in function with the most comprehensive components, not left depending on some helper apps from AUR, despite those clever and functional design...

  • Up-to-date recommendation for a home ESXi 5.1 server?

    Hi,
a similar thread was here end of last year:
    From: "Joseph Marton" <[email protected]>
Subject: What processor for a home VMware server?

I'm planning to have a new ESXi at home for just testing VMs and my
"home file & media" server. On new hardware, main aspect is low power
consumption, so I was wondering, if a box with internal disks or some
iSCSI capable NAS, that will power down the disks during idle times
(e.g. QNAP) would be the better choice.
Perhaps somebody has done this lately, pointing out recommendations and
    pitfalls to avoid?
    Tx, regards, Rudi.
PS: the old ESXi at home is a retired, reused old Proliant, consuming
    faaaar to much power...

processors, fully redundant power supplies and fans, 8 internal SAS
10k rpm and 15k rpm drives, 8 network interfaces and several other
    add-ons.
But if only you personally are using these VMs, the utmost power saving
you get, if you power your server only up, if you need it. Assuming 40
hours work per week, some weeks out of home on vacation, some hours
sleep per day gets you easliy down to at least 50% power consumption of
a 24h/7d working server. And you will have to disconnect the server/PC
physically from the mains via an own mains switch to get down to zero
power consumption during power off - the power consumption of a server
in standby (for NICs and ILO management etc) can be more than 10W,
which I find quite bad if you really power down the server to save
energy - if you just power down servers for maintenance and
    reconfiguration, that's of course irrelevant.

Typically VMWare has you modify the BIOS to not do any power-saving, although I suppose you could "sleep" the guest VM's.

  • Looking for a Secure Digital or SD card recommendation for MBPro and A540

I have an old Canon A540 camera that takes Secure Digital cards. The card I bought many years ago is not seen in the SD slot of my MBPro (latest version). If anyone has experience with that camera and the Mac's card slot I would love to know which make they use and if possible the size of the card. My intention is to by a 4 GB card, but any experience would be appreciated.

Launch Disk Utility and see if it appears there. Any SD card should work.

  • Cisco best practice design recommendation for adding a subscriber?

    Hello all,
We have UC Manager 7.1(3) running on a publisher and subscriber that is serving as the central voip to five (soon to be six) offices.  At what point does cisco recommend an additional subscriber be added to a cluster for call processing and load balancing?  I have been tearing through cisco's website and I am not finding this info.  I am sure it is there, just buried!
Any feedback and links to the doc would be a huge help.
    Thank you.
    Rgds,
    Vicky

    Vicky,
The answer you are looking for depends on a few things.  The most basic are:
    1) What hardware are you running? This will determine the maximum number of phones that can be registered to any one server.
    2) The answer to the first question comes into play as you total up how many phones you need to accommodate throughout the entire cluster.  In addition, you want to provide adequate redundancy as well.  Right now, you have a 1:1 model (Sub should be primary call processing agent but can failover to Publisher).  As your cluster expands, you may need to consider a 2:1 model (2 active Subs, 1 backup) or continue with a 1:1 model.
    3) If your cluster has 1000+ phones, you need to look into going with a Pub, 2 Subs, and a dedicated TFTP server.
Without getting too far into the weeds, take a look here first: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cust_contact/contact_center/ipcc_enterprise/srnd/7x/c7ccmsrv.pdf
Then, if you have additional questions - please ask!

  • Shooting and lens recommendations for Historic Cities, cityscapes, etc...

I'm currently trying to build my lens collection, and would love some advice on the "necessities" for the types of photography I plan to do.
    I currently have:
    1.  Canon SL1
    2.  Canon T3i
..and I'm looking at either getting an EOS 60D or waiting til later on in the year to see if there's something else coming along.
My lens collection so far is:
    1.  EF-S 10-22mm
    2.  EF 28-135mm
    3.  EF 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 III
    4.  EF 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 IS USM
In the next few months, I'll need to shoot outdoor situations (wilderness, camping/hiking, exploration) and Historic city/Historic Tourism type cityscapes.
I've noticed my current Lens library is limited in supporting that second one.  I guess I need to move down or to several different types of lenses.  Lately I've been using the 10-22 and the 28-135 when there's enough "room" for me to shoot.
I'd like to get very creative/artistic with my shots.  The historic cities I need to photograph are very "compact" (tight) and are really hard to get full shots of buildings, or landscape shots of city blocks.  narrow alleys and street ways.
The cities i'm in are in the Southern United States, and lots of harsh light.
I'd LOVE some recommendations on lenses, as well as any tips on shooting buildings/statues/historic landmarks in cramped city situations!

    Hi JustOmi!
I ran across this while moderating today and thought you might find it interesting. He happens to mention your exact shooting scenario!

    I hope that helps!

  • ID Server and Policy Agent for AS .. is secure?

    Hello there,
I have a question. Quite critical question, concerning iPlanetDirectoryPro cookie. If I've got it right, this cookie contains SSO Token. And the SSO token can be used with identity server to obtain any SSO assetion. I've experimentaly confirmed this.
Now, can anyone tell me why this cookie is sent to any host in my domain? The default after instalation is "bgs.sk". This default value enables any host in my domain to impersonate me. Well, I still can change this, but it is now good to have insecure default values anyway, is it?
Second, and more critical problem: I have Policy Agent installed on my Application Server. It looks like the agent requires access to the iPlanetDirectoryPro cookie to work correctly. But, if my application server has my SSO token, it can impersonate me anywhere. Not a good situation at all. That would mean security hole as big as hangar doors.
Are my assumptions correct? Am I overlooking something?
(All valid for ID server 6.0 and Liberty protocols)
    Thanks for any help.

Although Sun promote Identity Server by emphasizing its Liberty/SAML feature, the product itself use a proprietary protocol for SSO and CDSSO.
As all we know, this product could be totally useless without Sun's Policy/J2EE Agent deployed. But ironically these agents communicate with Identity Server in its own way, nothing to do with SAML, XACML, or even SOAP.
The agent approach is usually not a good idea. We saw more and more problem raised from fields related to agent stability and scalability. We never see any performance benchmark data from Sun. Since the communication between agt and Identity Server are proprietary, no ISV can make agent for this product. You have to wait for Sun for agent support if you have new system not on the support matrix.
In addition to agent, another big issue of Identity Server is its complex DIT structure. In fact, we prefer to have RDBMS as Identity Server's repository. Sun abuse ldap just because this company doesn't have any database product but still want to provide a pure Sun platform (JES) to customer. So they compromise the architecture for business reason, I'd like to tell you, I don't like the way Identity Server store data in DIT, I don't like the console UI (its for technical geek), and on one in our company dare to do any configuration change.
Now Sun put Identity Server as the core of its JES product stack. If you have time to take a look at how the SJS Portal use Identity Server and how SSO between Portal channel and Email/Calendar Server are achieved, you'll find that you just buy a "framework" (I mean Identity server), not a product, because you have to do every integration work by intensively coding.
I predict that Identity Server will be significantly rearchitctured in the near future, otherwise we don't see any benefit this product can bring to me. It is a headache for deployment as well as maintenance. If you just need Single Sign-On, there are lots alternative to achieve, Sun's Identity Server is really overkill. It's authentication feature is ok, but authorization feature (policy, role) is very limited. If you have lots of Windows/IIS web app need to do SSO with Identity Server, god bless you... you better have a sharp programmer to wrap up the C API so as your ASP programmer can leverage Identity Server SDK, and you got to pray for IIS agent behave well. In addition, don't forget to learn more about JATO if you want to do some fancy customization on the default login page.

  • What is the best and affordable printer for macbook pro?

hi.... i have difficulties in printing my assignments... which i need to save my work using my thumbdrive then open it at windows to print....therefore, i want to buy a printer that can works with my macbook pro...what is your advice? i have tried to install hp printer but cant support my mac...really need your advice before i buy the new printer..

It sounds as if you need a multi-function printer, with both wireless and AirPrint capabilities. A laser printer is usually back-and-white only, although there are color laser printers. Injest are probably the most common but they can go through some ink, resulting in some hefty cash being laid out for ink (although color laser printers have, likely, the highest consumable costs).
I've had good luck, over the decades, with Canon inkjet printers. Take a look at the Canon website and look at the "3-in-1" inkjet printers that offer wireless and AirPrint capabilities, copy functions, and scanner functionality as well.
    Good luck,

  • XSLT and XQuery recommendation for BPEL and OSB

    Hi,
    1. Why is XQuery recommeded for OSB and XSLT for BPEL. Are there any specific performance optimization reason behind this.
    2. Apart from OSB and BPEL, both XSLT and XQuery has xml transformation options and creating HTML. What is the difference between these two.
    Thanks in advance!

you can create the graphical view of Xquery in Eclipse but not for XSLT
Xquery is much faster than XSLT in OSB.
Through XSLT however you can achieve more complex transformation.
OSB has its historic origins in BEA Aqalogic stable and so Xquery was widely used used even though XSLT is supported. It is a matter of choice(your standards in your organization, your developer skillsets, your re-usable libraries etc )
In Jdeveloper you can develop xslt in graphical mode though and attain complex transformation
