Security threat detected by my cable operator but I can't find it

I received the following email from Cogeco this morning and they are going to shut me down soon if I can't deal with it. From my research at McAffee and Symantec it appears to something that only Windows users would get. I am confused. How can I detect a problem on my Mac?
You are receiving this email as Cogeco's network security dept has received reports of atypical traffic from your system that is indicative of malware (ie: a virus or trojan). Your system(s) are exhibiting symptoms of The Downadup (aka: Conficker) malware – see http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/wormw32_downadupa.shtml for more detailed info.
Some items to note about The Downadup malware,
1. This malware could have been prevented by ensuring your Windows system(s) is updated regularly. In particular Cogeco recommends you ensure Windows Auto Update is enabled on all systems in your household – see http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/updates/mu.mspx for further info
2. This malware can also propagate via USB drives, if you are using a USB external drive please review http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953252 for more on how to disable USB autorun feature in Windows

If you have a Windows virtual machine (VMWare or Parallels) or use Boot Camp to load Windows on your Mac, then it is possible. You should treat the virtual machine or copy of Windows you use in Boot Camp per their instructions. Window will always require additional anti-malware software.
If you have a PC with Windows on your home network, that's a possible source of the problem. Also, if you use a wireless network and it's open, someone nearby with an affected PC might be infected and causing the problem (Cogeco couldn't know whether it was your computer or someone else's, only that it came through your network connection).
If you don't have any of these things, then there's some confusion. You Mac system doesn't support the cited malware - it simply can't run on it. In that case, there's several possibilities: the Cogeco e-mail is fake (perhaps a phishing attempt to try and coax you into providing personal information or downloading software), or Cogeco's traffic analysis is wrong (the software used improperly interpreted some other activity as the virus, or the operator of said software has misinterpreted the results).
In any case, you need to contact Congeco (by telephone) and point out that you don't use Windows and are not able to run Windows malware (even if you wanted to).

    1 - you need to update your profile as you state that you have OS X 10.6.3 in it
    2 - for Yosemite you need to backup your iPhoto library and install iPhoto 9.6 from the App store - if you are upgrading from iPhoto '08 or earlier you need to also run the iPhoto Library upgrader prior to launching iPhoto 9.6
    3 - Your photos are NOT in iCloud - it is not a place to store photos - it is only to move photos between devices (MyPhotoStream) or people (shared PhotoStreams) - they are (by default) in the iphoto library in your pictures folder - if you did not backup your iphoto library prior to erasing you disk then they are gone

    Your steps so far are OK but you may want to try:
    1 Trash your user library Caches folder (House Icon with short name in Finder window (hard drive window)GOTO:House icon > Library folder > caches folder
    2 Trash the com.apple.Safari.plist file in User library > preferences folder > Safari.plist as well as removing the library Safari folder its self.
    3 you can selectivly re-install Safari 2.0 from your OS Tiger Install disk 1, (see Knowledge base article 301229 for how to just select the Safari Application) without doing a complete system Archive and Install.
    4. Create a new Test user account on the system and test how Safari responds in the Test user, see if its a user related issue and not system issue.
    5. Still no Safari response? have to do an Archive and install (not preserving user and network settings)article 107120
    PS. Issue may be related to actual internet connection connectivity, power cycle cable modem and router or airport if using one as well as the computer(keep unplugged for 3-5 min) and plug the cable modem in and then the router/airport then power on the computer. Do the Airport Admin utiliy (applications, utilities on HD_1)update.
    - do a hard reset of airport knowledge base article 108044(Express base) and 107451 (Extreme base)
    - Check with internet provider for connection issues "cannot find server" ect.

  • Mail Account shows unread mail but I can't find it

    In the process of adding some new mail accounts due to a merger of my cable carrier the "help" line told me to delete any existing mail accounts. I followed his advice and clicked "delete" on one account but it did not remove the folder from my list of accounts (below the inbox). Now my email sent to that address continues to go into that account but it does not get into my Inbox and if I click on the account no mail shows in the mail screen. My Mail icon at the bottom of the screen shows 9 new emails but I can't find them. They are all in the "cancelled" account.
    Does anyone know what to do in order to get those emails placed in my Inbox?

    First off, how important are these files? If you absolutely need these files and you don't have a backup you will need a recovery program to ensure that you recover the files. If you try and recreate your mail account and keep using the computer you may erase the possibility of recovering these files. Normally when you delete the account the POP folder is deleted. If you have a backup I would recommend you getting the files there.
    You can try the following:
    Your mail may still be there somewhere in /Users/USERNAME/Library/Mail/
    Inside this folder there will be a Mailboxes folder and a POP-something folder if you use pop. There may also be a cancelled folder here.
    You will need to recreate your mail account first. You will need the POP server and the SMTP server address if you use POP. After you have re-created your mailbox you can try to import your old mail from one of the folders mentioned. /Users/USERNAME/Library/Mail/cancelled is maybe where you will need to import from. USERNAME is your logon username.

    I'm trying to extend my wifi network with time capsule but it can't find the existing BT wifi network even though it is there with a good signal strength. The Time Capsule is connected to a Netgear router via ethernet.

    You will need to start over on the setup of the Time Capsule as follows:
    Disconnect any Ethernet cables that might be connected to the Time Capsule, but leave it powered on
    Hold in the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule for 8-10 seconds and release. The reset button is located next to the AC power socket.
    Allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
    Connect the Ethernet cable from a LAN <--> port on the Netgear to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.  The Ethernet cable must remain connected at all times.
    Click the WiFi icon at the top of the Mac's screen
    Look for a setting of New AirPort Base Station
    Click on Time Capsule
    The example below shows an AirPort Express. You will see Time Capsule on your screen.
    That will get the setup wizard going. It will take a minute to analyze the settings, then display a screen that looks like this, except you will see a picture of the Time Capsule
    Network Name..........Type in the exact name that the Netgear wireless is using
    Base Station.............Type in a name that you want to call the Time Capsule.  Use something short and simple. Mine is TC, for example
    Password..................Type in the exact password that the Netgear wireless requires
    Verify.........................Verify the Password again
    Click Next
    The setup wizard will configure everything for you automatically.  When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.
    That's it.  Now you have one big "extended" network.  Technically, this is called a "roaming" network.

    Thanks!!!  I actually used the "reset network settings" process but my guess is that I will now have to re-enter passwords for the networks I use...seems they should have made an easy way to simply change a password for a specific network since a lot of folks change them regularly for security reasons....thanks for the responses!!!

    You can import your camera roll to your computer using your usb cable as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.
    If you're upgrading your phone, I would recommend that you backup your old phone to your computer using iTunes.  Restoring an iTunes backup to your new phone will be much faster than restoring an iCloud backup, and possibly more reliable too.
    To back it up to iTunes, connect it to your computer, open iTunes, click on the name of your phone in iTunes, then go to the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings and click Back Up Now.  The go to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.
    When setting up your new phone, when given the option, choose Restore from iTunes Backup and restore this backup to your new phone.  It will include your camera roll and other data; restoring the backup will will also sync your apps and other iTunes media from your iTunes library to your new phone.

    Then software update to pick up any new security, iTunes updates.

  • Download i bought says it is in the itunes music folder but i can't find it

    I bought two albums last night (not from itunes store) and attempted to download them. During this the computer froze for a minute. The download appeared to finish. When I checked my itunes library tho i could not find the albums. This morning I attempted to download again and got a message saying these files already existed did i wish to replace-which I did. But I can't find them anywhere.
    To dowload I clicked the download button. Selected 'save' and clicked My music- itunes-library-music.

    I suffered the same issue here is a bit of information on the issue.
    XP Pro over wireless (always worked before) and installed the latest ITunes (released 7/15) upgrade.
    Will not reliably complete a download. Hangs on conformation from the system that the file is there. The file isn't so it never completes.
    If you quit ITunes and the restart it, ITunes will not continue downloading those songs because it thinks it completed the download. So those songs are now lost.
    When shutting down the computer you will find orphaned Itunes processes that are consuming resources and require a kill signal.
    This is a rather large bug for windows users and needs to be addressed as quickly as possible. Personally I am out $25 at this moment and am spending time trying to get the issue resolved
