Security Update 2006-007 (Power PC) wiped out my Airport

last night i figured i'd download and install the updates sitting in my software update queue, one of which was the Security Update 2006-007 (Power PC). among the things it states it improves the security for is Airport. after the download finished i restarted to find that my internet connection was absent. in addition my Airport indicator in the menu bar was greyed-out. however my network was still listed underneath and i selected it believing it would log back on to my network. nope. i've tried to run Airport Admin Utility, but it doesnt even see an Airport Base Station to talk to! (as an aside, i don't know how that is possible since i can obviously see my network under the Airport menu icon). i've also tried unplugging my Airport and internet connection to no avail.
my computer that is hardlined to the Airport can still get an internet connection so its nothing going awry with the internet or the Airport. its specifically something that got changed on my laptop from this "security" update. as well as not being able to connect to the internet, i also cannot access any other computer on my network from my laptop.
i'm sure that this will eventually get resolved, but my question is how can this happen? this is an apple-backed security update! and it wipes out my Airport connection? how is that possible? this does nothing for my confidence in keeping current with these security updates and installing them. which then makes me prone to potential holes in the future. i'm a web designer and macs and computers are hardly my weak suit. i can't imagine if this was happening to someone who just uses their computer to check their email or surf the internet, such as my dad. how confounding this must be to someone like that. you had the internet, updated your security, then you dont have the internet. makes no sense. its a total microsoft move.
PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9) Security Update 2006-007 (Power PC)

littleorangeman,
Take a look at the following article. Sounds like you may need either a hard or factory reset of your airport express.
If you do a factory reset, you'll have to set it up like a new airport--pretty easily done.

Hope this helps,

  • Startup fails after Security Update 2006-007

My eMac hangs at the initial gray startup screen. All I did was to allow Software Update to install Security Update 2006-007. I have waited as long as 60+ minutes, hoping some process would time out - but this is not the case.
My particulars: G4 eMac, 512Mb RAM, 40Gb drive with 15Gb free, 10.3.9 OS X Server (only supports a wireless classroom of 20 ibooks).
    Troubleshooting I have done:
    * Booted off of Mac OS X install disc. From Disk Utility, repaired permissions (minor fixes) and repaired hard drive (no errors at all).
    * Booted into command-V mode. Hangs after only 7 lines. The last line: "BSD root: disk0s3, major 14, minor 2"
Is there any way to undo a Security Update from the Terminal window? I really don't want to do an 'install & archive', with all my user accounts, etc. I have a firewire backup, but as of last week when I got a CCC error it is no longer bootable. I am a high school teacher who knows a bit, but never enough

I seems I'm not the only one experiencing start up problems after the 2006-2007 security update. G-4 Power PC, 466MHZ running OSX 10.3.9
My problems are exasperated by the fact that there was a power outage exactly the same time I did the security update. Now my start up screen goes no further than the whitescreem with the blue bar. IT comes to within 1/4" or 1/16" of the end and stops.
    What I've tried:
booted from OSx 10.3.9 Install disk, used disk utilities, Disk First Aid, no major problems found.
    Still sticks on start.
Started from Disk Warrior and ran repair no problems. Still sticks on start.
Tried to Safe Boot, with no success.
Zapped the PRAM 4 times. No success.
Tried to start from OSX install disk then bring up my backup disk drive from start up manager. Able to bring up back up, but same problem on start up as built in disk drive. Now I don't know how to unmount the backup disk drive without damage. THIS IS MY MAIN CONCERN AT THIS POINT. IF I LOSE THE BACKUP I'M FRIED!
Please help, I don't know when we will have another power outage and my UPS backup power seems to be compromised also.
    Thanks

  • System 10.3.9 freezes at startup after installing Security Update 2006-007

I installed the security update 2006-007 this morning and upon restart everything froze once the words "login window starting" appeared.
I tried a bunch of troubleshooting suggestions from the support pages ("Your Mac won't startup in OS X - 10.3.9 or earlier") including starting in safe mode, single user mode and dumping login preferences, network prefs, reset certain priveleges. None of these solved the problem.
Is the only work around for this to re-install the system?
PowerMac g4 dual proc. Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Ed,
I admit to being somewhat perplexed by your experience. But let me ramble a bit here anyway.
My opinion is that problems of the sort that you are experiencing (freeze after a software update) are almost always due to some software problem. (I base this opinion to a large extent on the experiences of other people in these forums.) The fact that your system works okay with Tiger is consistent with this idea.
But, if it is a software problem, why did it not go way when you re-installed Panther? I am wondering how you did the re-install. Was it an Archive and Install? That is the easiest approach and the first one to try, but there are some things it cannot fix. For one, if user settings and preferences are maintained during the A&I and the problem is related to these settings or preferences, then the problem will remain. In that case, an Erase and Install would be needed to clear out everything. Of course, this also deletes all of your data, so it is something you do not want to do unless you have a backup (which you said that you have).
Another thing that an A&I cannot solve is corruption of the filesystem (computer loses track of where some files start and stop on the hard drive). This problem can usually be detected and often repaired by booting off your install CD and using Disk Utility to repair the disk. You said that you used Disk Utility but gave no other details. I take that to imply that you detected no problems. If there are problems and Disk Utility is unable to fix them, a more powerful utility can sometimes do the job, and sometimes there is no solution except to reformat the hard drive and re-install the operating system. This of course destroys all data on the drive.
If there were a hardware problem behind this, the most likely thing in my view would be some bad blocks on the hard drive. I am pretty sure that Disk Utility, as used above, will look for bad blocks and mask them out if any are found. You mentioned something about 1 Gig of RAM. I think that RAM is unlikely to be the culprit. Problems with RAM usually are manifested as more erratic behavior that what you are experiencing.
You have already exhausted many of usual tricks, so what are your options? It sounds like you do not want to buy a copy of Tiger just to fix this and I can understand that. So, you could go to more and more extreme versions of re-installing your software. By this I mean using your Panther install disks to do an Archive and Install, then to do an Erase and Install if the first did not work, then to reformat and do an install if the Erase and Install did not work. Before doing either of these last two step,s you want to be sure that you have backup that you know works. You have said that "re-installing Panther does not fix the problem" and also that you "haven't done a system restore". It is not really clear to me what you mean by re-installing Panther. Was this from a backup or from your install CD?
If you want to avoid a re-install from your install CD as long as possible, then my suggestion is to attempt to troubleshoot the problem further by booting into Single User mode (which I think you have done). Once you get the disk mounted, I would suggest looking in the system.log file for an error message. Once you have mounted the disk, you can look at the end of the system.log file with the command
    tail /var/log/system.log
Look to see if any of the messages look like they might be indicative of a problem. If you see nothing, you can print out more lines by doing this:
    tail -40 /var/log/system.log
which will cause the last 40 lines to be printed. If you see any message that might be hinting at a problem, post it back here and perhaps someone will get a clue. I should say at the outset that this way of doing things takes a lot of patience and is not guaranteed to provide a solution.
I hope this ramble helps a bit. I know your are frustrated and I hope you get a solution soon.

  • Security Updates 2006-007 & 2007-003 | Need Advice

I have never had any problems with the security updates before, but last Fall, when i downloaded Security Update 2006-007, my entire computer froze. I wrote about this at the time but my problem was never resolved. (My computer model and info are listed below.)
No matter what i tried, i always ended up having to shut my computer down by pressing down on the button. I tried restarting several times and it was always completely frozen. The cursor would move but would not open anything.
Finally, i ended up having to reinstall my OS from the disks all over again. I tried installing the 2006-007 update again, and the same thing happened. Had to completely reinstall my OS.
I didn't like the idea of not having the security update, but since my computer was not functional after installing the update, i opted not to get that update again.
Well, i downloaded the 2007-003 update, and although i saw that the 2006-007 was combined with that update, i figured that maybe the bugs had been worked out or something. Stupid me. The exact same thing happened with this new combined update.
I need some computer genius to figure out why in the world this is happening. I just don't get it.
Like i said, i feel insecure not having the updates but my computer just won't function when i install these particular ones.
I have tried so many times and keep having to reinstall my OS.
    What could be causing this?
I know this is happening to other people, too, as i've read the other threads about it and also posted in at least one of them.
Oh, and in case anyone is wondering - although my PowerBook is getting along in years (nearly five years old), it still works great! I mean, it's just a fine computer that has never given me any serious problems. Without those particular security updates, it still works wonderfully. I'm religious about repairing permissions and general maintenance.
But these security updates render it useless. So i'm afraid to install them, they seem to be bad for my computer and i'm really tired of having to reinstall my OS.
I hope someone can help. Thanks.

    Thanks for your reply, scapesuiter.
I suppose i can rule out third party software, as, after i reinstalled my OS after the first freezing (after 2007-003), i did not add anything else. At that point there was nothing on my computer but what came on the original install disks. I tried downloading and installing 2007-003 again and the same thing happened, and i had to reinstall again.
However, i do have 1GB RAM that i did not order from Apple. My computer originally came with 512 but i bought more some time ago (can't remember exactly when).
I also bought a new hard drive, also not from Apple, at around the same time.
But i should say again that i've had no problems since getting the new hardware, other than with these particular security updates (2007-003 and 2006-007). All the other security updates went well, as well as all other software updates.
(I also did a hardware check with my Apple Hardware Test disk and it indicated that everything was working fine.)

  • Unable to change preferences after Security Update 2006-007 10.3.9 ppc

Problem: System Preferences are locked and cannot be unlocked. And Software Update, and Disk Utility would launch but not work following installation of the S.U. 2006-007 .
Solution Steps: 1) Turn off airport card, 2) Connect using ethernet, 3) restart, 4) download S.U. 2006-007 and reinstall. 4) restart 5) disconnect ethernet and turn airport card on.
I believe these steps will work. I did alot of other stuff before trying this and it seems to be working. If you really want to know all of what I tried then read on. Otherwise I would just try the above.
The key seems to be that the airport card is turned off and you are connected to the internet via ethernet so you can download and install the file.
    THE LONG STORY:
After using software update to install S.U. 2006-007
I was restarting and it to me to a black BSD login screen. I was not sure of the user name and password it was asking for so I ended up restarting by holding in the power button.
I reset the PRam and was able to get it to load but it listed the user at the top of the screen as UNKNOWN and would not let me see my alternate logins. I restarted again an this time it came up with my name.
Fearing problems I went to the disk utilities to check the permissions. It opened the disk utilities and as it was gathering information it suddenly quit disk utilities without any warnings.
I restarted in single user mode and used /sbin/fsck -fy twice and it found no problems and I restarted. It would still not let me do the disk utilities with the same results as above.
I went into my system preferences and my user settings were marked as locked and would not unlock even though I was logged in as the admin user.
I restarted and reset the power managment. Again I could not change the acounts preferences because it would not let me unlock them. My time was also messed up now and it would not let me unlock them.
I tried changing the passwords using the install disk and that did not work.
I also tried using disk utilities from the install disk. It checked the disk fine and found no problems but gave an error while trying to check the permissions.
I restarted and tried to software update the latest itunes and it would not let me install.
I am not sure why but I tried turning off my airport card and restarting. I was now able to change my preferences and do a disk utilities permissions repair {no problems found}.
I turned my airport card back on and once again my preferences were locked and so I turned the card off and the preferences stayed locked. I restarted several times playing with this and it appears that every time the airport card is turned on it locks the preferences and must be restarted with it off to allow access.
I tried logging in as a new user and had the same results.
I finally turned off the card and connected via ethernet and it had no problems unless the airport card was turned on. I redownloaded the S.U. 2006-007 and reinstalled it and it appears to work fine.
I was never connected wih the airport card and ethernet at the same time.

In the "never fails" category . . . went back onto the machine and signed on under a different account. Immediately got the the familiar Keychain dialog asking for permission for AirPort, responded yes, and the base station was suddenly visible to this account. Logged off, back in under the original account, got the same Keychain request (which had NEVER appeared before in 5 or 6 different logins) and was off and running again.

That feed works fine for me. The crash appears to be due to something font related - have you installed/removed any fonts between your last restart and the restart required by the security update?

  • Kernel panics after install of Security Update 2006-007

I also installed the security update, had a kernel panic when the install was 60% through the optimization. Tried to reboot and now only get the Apple logo screen which then goes to the following command lines:
init: can't exec /bin/sh for single user: Exec format error
init: can't exec /bin/sh for singer user: Exec format error
init: can't exec /bin/sh for /etc/rc: Exec format error
I booted from the OSX 10.3 disk, ran disk repair which found no problems. Tried repair disk permissions which hung up 1/3 the way through saying "Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue."
I tried to reinstall 10.3 but get the message I cannot install on my hard drive since it says it could not find an earlier version of OS X (I had since updated to 10.3.9). I have about 3 months of photos in iPhoto I haven't backed up (my bad)and would rather not reformat and reinstall the entire operating system. Any suggestions? Thanks

    Hi Larry
First off, Dr. Smoke has some good advice regarding kernel panics here:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
but It could be that your system is screwed at a fundamental level. If you can't do an archive and install from your system CD, then your HD may need formatting as a last resort. Do you have 2 macs, or a mate with a mac book? If so, you can connect them up using a firewire cable, and start you mac holding down the 'T' key to restart your mac in target disk mode. You'll see the firewire icon on your screen when it starts, and the other mac will get your HD pop up on it's desktop.
This gives you the ability to remove the data files you need (like all your photos) BEFORE formatting your HD.

  • Downloading Security Update 2006-001 STOPS (!) my internetconnexion

NO idea what this is: everytime I want to install new iTunes or Security Update 2006-001 , my internetconnexion falls out. Only then! After resetting router and modem all works fine again, but then when I want to install new iTunes or Security Update it happens again...?????
    I work on iMac G5 -10.4.5
Anyone has an idea WHAT TO DO?? xxxTHANKS!xxx

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Yes the same happened to me until my regular suggestion of repairing permissions solved it. Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility is where you select the hard disk and from First Aid repair permissions. For more upgrading tips, see this article which I wrote:

  • Security Update 2008-007 grays out Fast user switching, et. al.

I have noticed, over the course of installing the Security Update 2008-007 on several computers of various types (Power PC and Intel, all running at least OS 10.5.4 initially), that after the restart I see in System Preferences>Accounts>Login Options that the Automatic login 'drop down', 'Show Password Hints', and 'Enable fast user switching' are all grayed out. It noticed this after running the 10.5.5 combo update, among other system updates, on several of the computers at work. I was able to trace the problem to the Security Update 2008-007, because on most of the computers I purposely installed this separately after all other updates had been run and these same fields were grayed out on all but 2 stations. I have not found the common factors or discernible differences yet between the computers that were problematic and those which were problem free and tried unsuccessfully to avoid/correct the issue by running permissions repair before and/or after the Security Update and/or 10.5.5 update, as well as downloading the updater files and installing them locally. Has anyone experienced this problem after the Security update was run? I hope someone can suggest a fix, because Fast User Switching is much less intrusive on our employees if they don't have to log out each time I have to check their stations for something! Thanks.

Alas. I tried that already without result, as well as running Leopard Cache Cleaner and Disk Warrior as acts of desperation. I didn't expect them to help and they didn't. All user spaces display the grayed fields, including the System Administrator. I have tried deleting a few plist files, which I were hoping were relevant, but no success yet. I have one last station running 10.5.4 which hasn't had this particular security update applied yet, so I'll see if I can isolate the culprit. Thanks for trying to help! I do appreciate the effort.

  • Mac Mini will not boot after Security Update 2008-007

    Hello,
A G4 Mac Mini machine I was asked to take a look at will not boot after the owner (succesfully) installed Security Update 2008-007 from Software Update. Booting always hangs at the blue screen after the Apple logo, and booting in verbose mode reveals that WindowServer is crashing repeatedly. Permissions and filesystems have been repaired, PRAM reset, etc. Safe boot also exhibits the same problem, but it is possible to boot to single user mode. Hardware checks out fine with diagnostic utilities.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? Unfortunately, backups are not available (it's not my machine =).

Hi Arkku , and a warm welcome to the forums!
I'd certainly give Sig's advice a try first.

  • Security Update 2010-007 freezes MacBookPro with grey screen and spinner

Just some observations: a client with a MacBook Pro (2GHz Duo Core, 1.5Gb RAM) was running 10.5.8 without issue. Applied the Security Update 2010-007, Java Update 8, iTunes 10.0.1 and Safari 5.0.2. Rebooted, and machine kernal panics. Restarted twice to same kernel panic. Machine was able to reboot off of a clone backup (firewire external drive) made the day prior (without the updates) without issue. Try to reboot on normal drive and kernel panic.
Tried Rember and found one of the modules of RAM failed the test. Pulled the 1Gb out, machine booted to the grey screen (gray screen for google typos), the Apple logo and the spinner - for an hour. Apparently the update installation (with the bad RAM) pooched the system. Resetting the PRAM/NVRAM and PMU did nothing. A reinstallation of the 10.5.8 combo update fixed the issue.
Reminder: kernel panics are almost always a result of bad RAM in my experience. And by bad RAM, I mean RAM that will work with an older version of an OS, but not a newer one. EPROM info wrong or however else that RAM is preconfigured doesn't jive with the latest specs Apple uses in some in-between update.
Grey screens, endless spinning of the spinner -- most of that can be ferreted out, but it's usually easier to simply reapply a combo update to restore a system to sanity.

Hey, since I have updated to 10.6.3 I have a similar issue. When I put my macbook pro to sleep and I come back a few hours later and turn my external monitor on I notice that the macbook is ON, BUT frozen! The time is usually a few hours back, so the macbook must have started up and frozen shortly after I had put it to sleep. There is no way to restart but to hold down the power button, SUPER annoying!
Hope this will get addressed in an update. Any way your problem is connected to sleep mode?

  • System preferences shot after Security Update 2006-008 - no sound any more

All sorts of strange problems after running the 2006-008 security update, yet only affecting one my two MacMini:
System Preferences completely "shot", with the Date&Time item/icon looking very odd.
The little flag for language/keyboard setting and date/time did not show any more in the top menu bar -- basically everything left side of the blue Spotlight magnifying glass icon was gone.
Also Safari much more prone to quit.
Managed to delete some prefs and cached stuff and to replace the System Preferences application with the one from the other (working ok) Mac.
(I wish such components were available on the web!)
However: Currently I get no sound whatsoever. When I check the option to have the little speaker symbol displayed in the menu bar it shows. But as soon as I click it once, it vanishes from the menu bar.
In the Sound window, I have Volume set to full, yet everything is greyed out, "Sound off" is checked without my doing, while "Display sound volume in the menu bar" unchecks itself everytime(!)
And, very odd: While resetting PRAM and the fsck-routine working ok (no problems found) and disk utility claiming to have repaired all permissions, I can not run a reset of Open Firmware/nvram with the O-F-Apple-Alt key combination (I'm using an original Apple USB Keyboard for this, since I'm aware that my 3rd party keyboards from Logitech and Microsoft often refuse to perform such kind of "low level" tasks).

  • Apache denying http requests- could it be Security update 2006-007PPC?

I've been webhosting off an iMac G4 for two years and yesterday no one could access any of the pages, coming from multiple DNSs. I opened up sharing and turned on the log, saw some denials. Some improvement by toggling Personal Web Sharing, but goes back to not letting requests go through. Just so happens, I upgraded the hard drive the day before using carbon copy cloner and also converted the main page to a CSS, although can't imagine that would do it since I used the template from a working page. Could it be one of these changed some Apache settings or Security Upgrade is responsible? I'm on the phone right now, telling someone I'm working on it....

12190 deny tcp from any to any
65535 allow ip from any to any</pre>Usually, though,
if you turn on a service, the corresponding port
should open in the firewall. If the firewall is off,
I just get the last line starting with
    65535.
That's about the same, I just didn't publish the info on the other ports because I didn't think it was pertinent.
    Checking
the access log, I had been getting hammered for a
while by something automated on PHP calendar I had
posted- so I shut that down.
I'm not sure I understand this. Does this mean you
shut off the firewall and got the hits, or you saw
the hits being denied? The other log entries you
posted came from the system log or console, and
    not the Apache access log.
I can see where that was confusing. Upon reviewing the httpd/access log (as well as any other I thought might provide a clue), there were a slew of hits, all different times of the day from one IP address, all on the PHPicalendar page I had posted. Sometimes the requests would be an individual hit, but most times they would come in groups of ten or twenty all about 4 seconds apart. These were logged all the way back to the oldest entries still in the log files. The computer had been dutifully fulfilling the requests and this most likely explains some system slowness I had been seeing on the machine. Since then I disabled that page and the requests get a 404 reply from Apache. I threw that comment out to justify why I was interested in changing my IP address. By the way, google calendar and iCal integrate really nicely, allowing iCal to subscribe to the google calendar and then I could export the iCal to the PHPicalendar. A little circuitous, but not annoyingly so. Anyway, now that I know that it's being targeted I'll probably just work with google calendar and the google notifier app for macs.
    Again, the closest event to
the known start of the problem was the Security
    Update 2006-007PPC.
For what it's worth, I've applied the Security Update
on this iMac without this problem. Which is not to
say it's not possible it caused the problem. But if
so, it's still more likely to be something isolated
to your system and not a general bug in the update.
I think I might have figured out the problem. Going through the system log, I noticed the computer sleeping and waking. I went to system prefs and checked the settings, then changed to "never sleep." Seems to be working. I know I didn't change that setting, and I was under the impression that before, the http requests were waking the computer up- although I don't know, I just never had this problem before. To add to the confusion at one point the subnet address of the machine changed because I was trying to debug by doing a network restart and the router was pointing to the wrong computer. I'll have to check with the other users of this machine to see if they altered the setting- but they may not fess up since they know they're not supposed to mess with system prefs- as it is, I've got the parental controls turned on.
As for the stability of the Comcast IP address, I
unplugged the modem for about 6 hours last night,
plugged it back and had the same IP
    address.
That's been my experience, too. Comcast's IP
addresses are tied to the MAC address of whatever
customer supplied equipment faces it. I think you
might have to be disconnected from the cable modem
until the DHCP lease expires, and someone else gets
your old IP address, in order to get a new IP
    address.
I've been able to force a new IP address by changing
the MAC address on my router. However, if you decide
to try this, only use the MAC address from a
device you have in your physical possession. For
example, you could clone the MAC address from one of
your computers to the router. Just make sure you go
back to the router's real MAC address if you get rid
    of the computer.
Remember, you have to reboot the cable modem any time
you change the MAC address of the device connected to
it. Just like you would if you connected a different
computer directly to the cable modem.
    charlie
Thanks, I'll try that. I'm going to give it another day or two to see if it's stable again.

  • Security Update 2006-001 Killed network preferences

After upgrading with the 2006-001 Security Update, none of my network preferences will set up correctly anymore. DHCP doesn't seem to be doing anything, and when I tell it to use a manual address via the system preferences, it appears that it's not actually doing anything. Mac OS System Preferences will not even detect that I have an ethernet cable plugged in, though if I use ifconfig and route I can get a LITTLE bit of traffic to go out, so I know it's connected and working.
Any one have any ideas on this? Absolutely frustrating because I can no longer work until this is fixed (sitting in an internet cafe trying to figure out what the problem is). I'm running 10.3.9 on a 1.2Ghz 12" Powerbook. I don't remember my Unix days well enough to try to manually set up routes and our DNS settings, nor do I know if the appropriate tools are in Mac OS, but the Apple network preferences are clearly busted.
Is there anyway to uninstall an update?

    12" 1.2 Ghz PB   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I had the same Network & Airport issue after installing Security Update 2006-001 on my wife's iBook G3 running 10.3.9 Trying to access our Airport base station wirelessly would inevitably hang as I selected the Airport network.
I noticed that every time I shut down the computer there was a brief showing of the keychain window asking to allow keychain access...this right as the computer went down (no chance to hit the allow button).
Spent the better part of an entire afternoon trying to fix this problem. Then read all the posts here (amazing how many people have problems with this update). Tried to reset permissions - didn't work. In the end, I rebooted the Airport...went into the Airport Admin Utility with my PowerBook to fiddle around...removed our Airport network from the keychain in my wife's iBook...explored other aspects via the keychain access utility.
None of that seemed to work. I also figure I reset the permissions about half a dozen times (with subsequent reboot). None of that was working either...until after one permissions reset & reboot things came good. I got the keychain window, allowed access, and hey presto...online. So far it's been OK for over 12 hours (including after reboot).
    What exactly worked? I don't know. "It's a mystery".
One thing's for sure...this update is not going on any of my other machines!
Come on Apple...surely you can do better than send us automatic updates that break our computers and sap our time!

  • After applying Security Update 2006-001 can't launch Office X apps

I noticed that, after applying Security Update 2006-001, I can't launch Microsoft Word nor Excel nor Power Point (Office X, 10.1.6 updated). If I double click the app icon, select and try to open from File menu or try to launch it from the Dock, I get the message "The app has unexpectedly quit". This does not affect Entourage so far. I can open existing files double clicking on their icons and, once the app is running, create new files from menu bar. Repaired permissions, checked for corrupted preferences files or templates but to no avail.
    Can anybody help?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   512 MB RAM

DivX Doctor is a freeware I had downloaded a few days before applying Security Update 2006-01 (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/4683). It certainly was responsible for my problems with Office X apps because, as I said, they completely disappeared as soon as I got rid of it.
I hadn't the memory problems you mentioned (I've applied also Security update 2006-02 without problems).
Don't know if this can help, but you might want to give a try to Disk inventory X (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14393) [quote]Disk Inventory X is a disk usage utility for Mac OS X. It shows the sizes of files and folders in a special graphical way called "treemaps".
