Security Update 2007-007 in the wild

Just finished installing Security Update 2007-007. Fixes a couple of real nasties this time. Catch is it only installs on 10.3.9 and 10.4.10 so if you have not updated to 10.4.10 yet you're leaving yourself open to some very real security issues.
Follow the good advice given here by various gurus in preparing for and update and you'll be fine.

hm, what happens if i installed that and the only update left is the 10.4.10 update.
i didnt realize this was an issue aswell this very unbecoming and peculiar.
(maybe these errors people experience are intentional somehow - force to get leopard lol j/k)

  • Security update 2007-007 gives TextEdit & RTF file error ?

I am having trouble editing RTF files using TextEdit and I think the Security Update 2007-007 is the culprit, but have no idea how to fix this.
I have repaired permission via disk utility, but this did not fix the problem.
When I use TextEdit to edit existing RTF files, the file is brought up into the window, but the contents are in its raw format. The TextEdit window has:
    {\rtf1\mac\ansicpg10000\cocoartf102
    {\fonttbl\f0\fswiss\fcharset77 Arial-BoldMT;\f1\froman\fcharset77 Times-Bold;\f2\froman\fcharset77 Times-Italic;
    \f3\froman\fcharset77 Times-Roman;\f4\froman\fcharset77 TimesNewRomanPSMT;}
    {\colortbl;\red255\green255\blue255;}
and so on for the file.
If I edit this same file with Safari, the xxx.rtf file comes up nicely formatted.
I am able to see that the Security Update 2007-007 was installed on
    2007-08-14 23:02:04 -0500: Installed "QuickTime" (7.2)
    2007-08-14 23:04:28 -0500: Installed "Security Update 2007-007" (1.0)
As per the software update log file.
Also, I see that the TextEdit application file was changed at around same time:
    ls -l /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents:
    drwxrwxr-x 4 root admin 136 17 Aug 07:41 MacOS
everything else in the directory has a 2003 date on it.
Inside MacOS directory is the TextEdit binary, which also has the same new modification date.
I grabbed a TextEdit binary from another machine (a G3 running 10.3.9) that has not had the security update on it and replaced my TextEdit, and after rebooting just to make sure it was not running an in memory copy, the problem still persists.
The sum for the broken TextEdit is: 30845 128 TextEdit.broken
Also, if I create a new file with TextEdit and edit it (bold, underline, etc) and save as an RTF file and then close the file. When I re-open the file, the file comes up as raw garbage.
So, TextEdit is dead. Any ideas how to revive it?
    thanks

    Welcome, again, to Apple Discussions.
I don't use TextEdit myself, or work much in RTF, so some of your more technical descriptions are lost on me. However, here are a couple of suggestions:
Try starting up in Safe Mode. Here is what Safe Booting does: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)
My second suggestion is to use Pacifist to extract TextEdit from the install disk and install it on your computer.

  • AirPort problem after installing Security Update 2007-007

Help! I installed the security update 2007-007 on my Mac mini os x and now my AirPort is not detecting any signal. Should I backup the system and then reboot? I'm not really sure what to do. I have tried almost everything I can imagine. I checked through the user logs and all was functioning properly until the update installed. All of the settings for the network and internet connect say that they have failed.
Please help! I am not particularly familiar about backing up -- how do I do this? (please spell out for me, I'm really new to mac!)
    Thanks in advance

Thanks both of you. I update a clone drive every couple of days or so, but still, any downtime because of a buggy update, or worse some stealth code embedded in the update, would drive me crazy. I'll wait on 10.5 because I want to make sure that my primary apps (like photoshop CS3) are fully tested. Like they say "the first one through the pass gts hit by the most arrows:-))

  • Security update 2007-007 smbd still at version 3.0.10?

Security update 2007-007 says it fixes CVE-2007-2446, 2447, and 2407. Yet after installation smbd -V still shows it running version 3.0.10. Does Apple maintain it's own version of the source than Samba.org? I would have thought this version would be at least 3.0.25b ?
    thanks for any insight.

  • Security Update-2007-007

This security update, when applied, turns the Mac firewall OFF. It might be worthwhile pointing out to readers/site visitors that this happens, so they can turn it on again.
Quite a few other users ave also experienced this problem, which isn't apparent unless you check.
Odd that a security update disables your security.

  • Instant crash with USB headphones after Security Update 2007-007 install

    Hi all,
I'm having problems with my Mini after installing the 2007-007 security update. Specifically I get the grey panic screen of death almost immediately after I plug in my Sennheiser USB headphones. It doesn't seem to matter which USB port I plug it into, I get the panic screen immediately. It also appears to happen only on my mac mini, I have a 1st gen. Macbook Pro that is unaffected.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this or whether I'll just have to wait for an update to rectify this.

Same exact problem with MacBookPro and usb headphones sennheiser pc35 usb.
The same headphones work flawlessly on a Powerbook G4 15inch 1.67GHz.
    Any suggestions ?

  • System problems after Security Update 2007-007 install

    Hello all,
I am having problems with my computer after installing the 2007-007 security update. Specifically, the keyboard and mouse become non-functional at random intervals. The system has not frozen up, though, as items on the screen continue to update. Each time this has happened, I have had to ssh into the machine from another one and reboot. I am on a dual G4 Powermac, 867 MHz with 2 GB of RAM running OS X 10.4.10. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be causing this?

Hard to say. Have a bootable backup of your installation before the update? Did you repair permissions and repair the disk before installing? How soon after rebooting does the problem come back? Have you checked the console and system logs?

  • Security Updates 2006-007 & 2007-003 | Need Advice

I have never had any problems with the security updates before, but last Fall, when i downloaded Security Update 2006-007, my entire computer froze. I wrote about this at the time but my problem was never resolved. (My computer model and info are listed below.)
No matter what i tried, i always ended up having to shut my computer down by pressing down on the button. I tried restarting several times and it was always completely frozen. The cursor would move but would not open anything.
Finally, i ended up having to reinstall my OS from the disks all over again. I tried installing the 2006-007 update again, and the same thing happened. Had to completely reinstall my OS.
I didn't like the idea of not having the security update, but since my computer was not functional after installing the update, i opted not to get that update again.
Well, i downloaded the 2007-003 update, and although i saw that the 2006-007 was combined with that update, i figured that maybe the bugs had been worked out or something. Stupid me. The exact same thing happened with this new combined update.
I need some computer genius to figure out why in the world this is happening. I just don't get it.
Like i said, i feel insecure not having the updates but my computer just won't function when i install these particular ones.
I have tried so many times and keep having to reinstall my OS.
    What could be causing this?
I know this is happening to other people, too, as i've read the other threads about it and also posted in at least one of them.
Oh, and in case anyone is wondering - although my PowerBook is getting along in years (nearly five years old), it still works great! I mean, it's just a fine computer that has never given me any serious problems. Without those particular security updates, it still works wonderfully. I'm religious about repairing permissions and general maintenance.
But these security updates render it useless. So i'm afraid to install them, they seem to be bad for my computer and i'm really tired of having to reinstall my OS.
I hope someone can help. Thanks.

    PowerBook G4

    Thanks for your reply, scapesuiter.
I suppose i can rule out third party software, as, after i reinstalled my OS after the first freezing (after 2007-003), i did not add anything else. At that point there was nothing on my computer but what came on the original install disks. I tried downloading and installing 2007-003 again and the same thing happened, and i had to reinstall again.
However, i do have 1GB RAM that i did not order from Apple. My computer originally came with 512 but i bought more some time ago (can't remember exactly when).
I also bought a new hard drive, also not from Apple, at around the same time.
But i should say again that i've had no problems since getting the new hardware, other than with these particular security updates (2007-003 and 2006-007). All the other security updates went well, as well as all other software updates.
(I also did a hardware check with my Apple Hardware Test disk and it indicated that everything was working fine.)

  • MacPro Hangs on Restart of the Security update 2008-007!

After installing Security update 2008-007 and performing the required restart my MacPro 2x 2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (OSX 1.5.5) freezes on the apple grey logo with the spinning gear.
I`ve tried the Safeboot mode (shift key) but the screen remains the same (apple grey logo with the spinning gear).
I`ve tried the Single User mode (command+s) and done "/sbin/fsck -fy" and reports nothing different.
I`ve tried the verbose mode and there`s no apparent error message but the last line is:
Extension "com.apple.driver.iTunesPhoneDriver" has no explicit kernel dependency; using version 6.0.
And iTunes got updated as well (in the same session as Security update 2008-007) to 8.0.1
I`ve tried the Target mode (T) and used the "Repair Disk Permissions". There`s no error either.
I`ve tried booting from the leopard disk 1 and doing a Hardware test. All ok.
I`ve tried booting from the leopard disk 1 and using disk utility to "repair disk". It returns: disk appears to be OK in green.
The last thing I could do, unfortunately was Archive and Install Leopard with all configurations and definitions remaining.
That works and the system boots ok. Apparently the system is ok, but my two services (Qmaster and MatrixStore) doesn`t work anymore. I`ll probably go wi the fresh reinstall.
    BUT... for my surprise...
I have 4 mac pro 8 cores. This was the first one that I`ve installed the upgrade and restarted. I thought that was a problem with THIS particular Mac, but to my surprise, when I`ve done system update on the second MacPro the exactly same thing happens.
I have other 2 macs to upgrade but I`m afraid to have to reinstall all 4 macs! That`s a lot of work!
    Can anyone knows how to:
1- find what it`s happening to my macs after this upgrade (and it`s not for everyone as would be lot`s of topics about this right now).
    and
2- how to recover/uninstall the last upgrade in single user mode or with the leopard dvd on bash terminal.
    Very best Regards!

My method: +never apply updates until you backup and clone the system.+
Run Disk Warrior (Apple DU First Aid leaves some problems behind)
Never repair permissions from the DVD now with Leopard, you must run Repair Permissions either while booted or from a system running the same version, older versions of Disk Utility can cause trouble.
Test on the new clone. Security and combo updates can be applied to non-boot system. So you can boot from your emergency drive and apply it to your working drive. Perform a repair permissions, before you boot off the drive (another reason for applying updates from a 2nd drive).
Security Updates can plague and cause problems. There are always some that are fine, and some that run into "gotcha" or two. MacFixit usually has reports, tips, troubleshooting as soon as or within a day or two of any updates. And it seems like all your systems with similar configuration? looks like it wasn't tested.

After all these years and updates, I trust them less now than I use to, and it seems like there is always some risk (more risk than I've had with my other OS). OS X needs Acronis along with restore points, a way to apply and undo updates more easily.

  • Startup fails after Security Update 2006-007

My eMac hangs at the initial gray startup screen. All I did was to allow Software Update to install Security Update 2006-007. I have waited as long as 60+ minutes, hoping some process would time out - but this is not the case.
My particulars: G4 eMac, 512Mb RAM, 40Gb drive with 15Gb free, 10.3.9 OS X Server (only supports a wireless classroom of 20 ibooks).
    Troubleshooting I have done:
    * Booted off of Mac OS X install disc. From Disk Utility, repaired permissions (minor fixes) and repaired hard drive (no errors at all).
    * Booted into command-V mode. Hangs after only 7 lines. The last line: "BSD root: disk0s3, major 14, minor 2"
Is there any way to undo a Security Update from the Terminal window? I really don't want to do an 'install & archive', with all my user accounts, etc. I have a firewire backup, but as of last week when I got a CCC error it is no longer bootable. I am a high school teacher who knows a bit, but never enough

I seems I'm not the only one experiencing start up problems after the 2006-2007 security update. G-4 Power PC, 466MHZ running OSX 10.3.9
My problems are exasperated by the fact that there was a power outage exactly the same time I did the security update. Now my start up screen goes no further than the whitescreem with the blue bar. IT comes to within 1/4" or 1/16" of the end and stops.
    What I've tried:
booted from OSx 10.3.9 Install disk, used disk utilities, Disk First Aid, no major problems found.
    Still sticks on start.
Started from Disk Warrior and ran repair no problems. Still sticks on start.
Tried to Safe Boot, with no success.
Zapped the PRAM 4 times. No success.
Tried to start from OSX install disk then bring up my backup disk drive from start up manager. Able to bring up back up, but same problem on start up as built in disk drive. Now I don't know how to unmount the backup disk drive without damage. THIS IS MY MAIN CONCERN AT THIS POINT. IF I LOSE THE BACKUP I'M FRIED!
Please help, I don't know when we will have another power outage and my UPS backup power seems to be compromised also.
    Thanks

  • Applications not responding apparently after Security Update 2007-009

Mail, iTunes, Skype, MSN Messenger, MainMenu, Emule, Safari and god know what else aren't responding after Security Update 2007-009.
    Hi,
I recently purchased a new phone that does not work with macs, so I bought an application from Feisar to make it work. The application isn't freeware, so I think it is very unlikely that it bogused my system. Anyway, I installed the software, but only afterwards noticed it didn't work for my phone model with the USb interface, only through bluetooth, which I don't have. Moreover, and, in my opinion, more importantly, I also downloaded and installed security update 2007-009. After the update, I mandatorily restarted OS X and instantly noticed Mail, iTunes, Safari, Skype and Messenger not working. I click on them on the dock, they bounce (usually once, but it has occured to be more) and nothing happens. I don't get the little arrow below the icon. I see the applications in the applications folder, so they are not missing. I searched and searched on the internet and, apparently it is, to say the least, herculeanly complicated to downgrade from a software update. I tried to repair permissions and it didn't work. I tried the apple hardware test and everything came out perfect. I restarted many times and the same keeps happening.
So I wasted half my day yesterday trying to fix this, looking into forums and trying to talk to people about it and there it absolutely no answer. Yesterday I installed the programs necessary to sync my phone in my wife's macbook and nothing bad happened. So I'm guessing it isn't about the phone plugins I installed. I've tried to download combo updates but they crash as soon as I try to install them - I even tried to install a 10.4.10 update.
This is the error message I get:
    Command: Installer
    Path: /Applications/Utilities/Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/Installer
    Parent: WindowServer [114]
    Version: 2.1.9 (104)

I put part of in on google to check if there was anybody discussing anything related and someone suggested - bizarrely enough - updating adobe reader. I did it just in case and, of course, it didn't work. I repaired permissions a million times already, I rebooted in safe mode, I scaned the computer with apple jack (which reapetedly said that I had a "fan failure!"), I verified the disk with diskutility - which showed nothing. I tried downloading an anti-virus (ClamXav), but I couldn't open it also, I trashed my prefs, I deleted all internet plugins, but still.... nothing.
The most likely line to follow here is the "fan failure" message in apple jack. I looked inside my g5 and all fans except for the one close to the Hard Drives aren't spining. I'm not sure this means they aren't functional or whether the temperature isn't high enough for it to be turned on. Temperature must be around 26-28 degrees Celsius today. There is nothing on the internet about that fan failure that's close enough to my case.
I'm about to quit and take it to the very expensive - yet reliable - authorized tech support apple has in Rio. Any ideas, anyone?

Maybe it is a security update thing! I have had similar troubles with my CS2 and other simple apps like TextEdit not opening, just doing that single bounce... I have tried EVERYTHING and now, after reinstalling my entire system, have lost access to my own user profile.
I'm assuming you have tried starting up with your original system install disk in the computer, while you turn it on, hold the option key, it will allow you to run another hardware check, as well as to do an archive install if it comes down to that.
good luck, please let me know if you find out something else that might be causing the problems... i've noticed that alot of mac threads have similar probs listed.

  • Prey game not launching after Security Update 2007-004

After applying Apple Security Update 2007-004, Prey (Mac version) is not launching and continuously crashes on my computer. I have uninstalled all game files and reinstalled the game from the original DVD but with no success. Repairing disc permissions, updating prebindings and other usual maintainence meaures are unfortunately not helping. I have an external USB hard disc running Mac OS 10.4.9 without the Security Update applied and Prey works properly when my computer boots up from this external hard drive. It is therefore apparent that Apple Security Update 2007-004 has most probably caused Prey to become non-functional as prior to this the game was working without any problems whatsoever.
Has anyone else expereinced this problem and are there any suggestions?
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Contact the game author's site and report it so they can update it.

  • Mac Mini will not boot after Security Update 2008-007

    Hello,
A G4 Mac Mini machine I was asked to take a look at will not boot after the owner (succesfully) installed Security Update 2008-007 from Software Update. Booting always hangs at the blue screen after the Apple logo, and booting in verbose mode reveals that WindowServer is crashing repeatedly. Permissions and filesystems have been repaired, PRAM reset, etc. Safe boot also exhibits the same problem, but it is possible to boot to single user mode. Hardware checks out fine with diagnostic utilities.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? Unfortunately, backups are not available (it's not my machine =).
