Security Update 2008-005 (Intel) -- DNS Hole patch

Is it alright to use this update (Security Update 2008-005 (Intel)--DNS hole patch) on an Intel iMac running OS X Ver. 10.4.9 even thought it states the requirement as being 10.4.11?
Yes I know I can update to 10.4.11 for free, but I have some issues with it and prefer to stay on a very stable 10.4.9 installation.
Thanks in advance for any insight on this.
WW
PS--"Security Update 2008-005 (Intel)" doesn't appear when software update is run, so I would have to manually apply it, which I'm assuming is an option.

Hi, I'm not certain on this, but I really think if it doesn't show in SWU, then likely it needs something higher first. Usually though, when you try to install it it will stop you if you can't/shouldn't.
Like iTunes 7.7.1 can't be installed unless you already have iTunes 7.7.0 installed, you can get it, but it doesn't shoew in SWU, nor will it install.

  • Security Update 2008-005 for Leopard

Pushed the Security Update 2008-005 packages for 10.4.11 PPC/Intel, and 10.5.4 Leopard systems via ARD 3.2 to appropriate clients. The PPC and Intel pushes went as expected. At the end of the Leopard push caused about 10 systems to black their screen -- the mouse pointer moved and was the only thing visible. These systems had a user currently logged in. The Leopard systems with no user logged in updated and restarted. Had to visit each system and manually restart. The question is: do Leopard updates need to be handled differently than Tiger? Should Install NOT do a restart at the end of the push and then manually restart these systems? I wish Apple would test their security updates to work with ARD a little bit better. If the problem is with ARD, then we need a fixed version.

    Hi Bob,
I've been looking for work the last 2 months so I can't attest to the SU2008-005 but, can feel your pain.
Leopard updates do act differently as I'm sure you've noticed. Some log you out while others don't. Most any update can get a little weird if an application is running and decides to hog resources, screensaver starts, even a login or logout occurs. That is why I made it a practice when scheduling updates to push, to Restart the system, then 10 minutes later send the updates out. Of course I would have this happen late evenings when I know nobody would disturb the systems and that I'd be in before most of the system's users would arrive the next day. That way you can check the status of the systems and give them a little extra attention if needed. That is a much rarer occurrence with fresh started systems.

  • Unable to see PC's on network after Security Update 2008-005

I just updated our Tiger server with the latest security update 2008-005 and now none of the PC's can see the Workgroup or the server. In addition, the Macs can no longer see the PC's on the network. The PC's can connect to other computers if it was previously mapped. However if we try to connect to the Workgroup, it is denied. Previously one PC's with the Windows Firewall turned on blocked all the PC's from seeing the Workgroup however it did not block Macs. This time viewing PC's is blocked completely and there are no PC's windows firewalls running. The macs can still see other macs and the servers (all Xserve's).

Issue resolved. It had nothing to do with the update. When I restarted the server it chose an NT computer on the network as the Master Browser. The resolution was to turn off the NT computer, restart the computer and let it pick up one of the 2000 or XP computers as the Master Browser. That worked.

  • Security Update 2008 005 PPC - found "alreay exists" items

I found these entries in the "install.log":
./System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework (version 523.12.2.45231202) was not installed because a newer version (4525.18.0.45251800) already exists.
./System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/WebCore.frame work (version 523.12.2.45231202) was not installed because a newer version (4525.18.1.45251801) already exists.
./Applications/Safari.app (version 3.0.4.45231202) was not installed because a newer version (3.0.4.45252200) already exists.
after installing Security Update 2008 005 PPC. I installed iTunes 7.7.1 at the same time but was otherwise current with Tiger 10.4.11.
Should I be concerned with these messages or just ignore them?
Should I install Security Update 2008 005 PPC again but move these files to the trash prior to the install?

Hi, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I don't think you need to worry. Most likely those Security things were taken care of by you installing more recent Safari updates than some might have on their installs.

  • Macbook won't boot after installing Security Update 2008-007 (Intel)

I installed security update 2008-007 (intel) on my MacBook last night using Software Update, but now my machine won't boot at all. All I get is the gray start-up screen with the dark gray apple, but there's no spinning progress bar or anything. After 5 minutes or so, the machine auto-restarts, but again hangs on the gray start-up screen. It does this over and over again until I shut it off. I tried to boot into safe mode by holding down shift right after the chime, but it still wouldn't boot (again, not even a spinning progress bar). Can anyone please help me? I really don't want to lose my photos/movies, etc. I'll backup everything promptly if I can just get it to boot. Thanks.

Hi jared-lee, and again, a warm welcome to the forums!
First for safety, "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

This may or may not fix the problem, but may.
Do you have another Mac around?

  • Since installing Security Update 2008-004 (Intel) ProTools won't open

    Hello,
I'm running Tiger 10.4.11 on my mac, and since I installed the Security Update 2008-004 (Intel) every time I try to open ProTools the ProTools icon jumps up and down a few times and then it stops, the program won't open. Are there any similar issues with this update and any other applications? I'm 100% sure the security update is what caused the problem, nothing else out of the ordinary has happened since with my mac.
    Thanks for the help.

If you still have this problem, and you're using ProTools 7.3, try this Digidesign update here:

    It worked!

  • Security Update 2008-003 Intel not installing

I installed MacOS 10.5.3 update successully but the security update2008-003 did not work. I downloaded the intel update and it starts ok until the HD chosen to be installed apperars. Even the Macintosh HD apperas with the red and X circle. What could have happened? Is there an error with the installer?

Security Update 2008-003 is included in 10.5.3. If you have 10.5.3 installed then you have all the contents of the 2008-003 security update already.

  • Problem with Entourage after installing Security Update 2008-005

Since installing the update I can no longer access the mail on my server using its required SSL settings in Entourage 2008. I can use Mail without problem, and I can access mail from my other servers (which don't require secure settings).
    Any advice?

  • Unable to install Security Update 2008-003 (Intel)

Software update found the security update, but when I tried to install it there was some error and the installer pkg was moved to the trash. Software update recognized this, told me it happened and that I should try to open the pkg manually. Still didn't work. I went to the Apple Downloads page, downloaded the update again, and that one wouldn't install either.
    Anyone else having this problem?
    Any ideas?

ok, it took me a while to get disk first aid going. found a bunch of incorrect permissions that needed repairing, but otherwise no problems.
I wanted to get my new backup hard drive before I started messing with the install disk, so it's been many steps.
I've got software update trying again now.......
I think it may have worked!
tells me I have to restart. =) Yay!

  • Security update 2008-005 hangs during install

after the download, during install, the security update installer seems to hang after what seems like a 10% progress (still in configuring install phase).
i've tried waiting for upto 10 minutes with no luck. could someone help?

Manually download the update from Apple and update from there.

  • Security Update 2008-005 PPC won't unpack

    Hey all,
I've tried both the command line and the GUI versions of software update. No luck. The update downloads and gets as far as a .DMG file, but when unzipping the .DMG there is an error and the image never mounts. Anyone else have this problem? Anyone else get the update to work? Thanks.
    Matt
B&W G3 tower, 650k RAM - lame old machine I know, but it works well as a home web-server and backup machine for both of my laptops (one mac, one dell)

    but when unzipping the .DMG
You don't 'upzip' a disk image, you double click it to open the installer.

  • Is there a way to back out Security Update 2008-006???!!?

This @#$%^! thing is making me insane. Airport works for like 3-5 min then locks up. I tried the copy/del preferences and that didn't work.
Can some one tell me how to back out the patch? >:-(
    Thanks!

Thank you BDAqua! Your solution worked and was much more helpful than Apple's phone support wipe and reinstall instructions.
I've got to rant for a minute here...
This is the kind of crap I've gotten used to from Microsoft (having worked in IT for over 21 years), but even THEY can back out a patch (99% of the time) without requiring you to reinstall the OS!!
I expect more from Apple, especially since OSX is based on Linux. Haven't any of you Code Monkeys heard of patch and patch -R???! I mean what the fur??? Hey Apple OSX developers GET A CLUE and put the patch facilities back or enable/post instructions for us use them to remove bad patches if needed!! It would avoid making your loyal customers so angry they could scream!!
And what is with leaving this thing (Security Update 2008-006 Intel) available for D/L and install when your are actively receiving reports of problems??!!? Do you think I care "It's not happening to everyone"??!!!?? It's happening to enough people for there to be a dozen threads on the forums!!!! Someone from Apple wanna explain that to me?
So, after BDAqua's kind help, and 1.5 hrs work, my MackBook is now stable and may AirPort card is working. After that little tryst I bailed on Tiger completely and upgraded to Leopard.
A big THANK YOU to BDAqua again, and a big raspberry to the OSX and patch teams.

  • ClamAV and DNS Failure with Security Update 2010-005

Hey everyone, got a bit of an issue.
I'm running Leopard Server 10.5.8 and I've noticed a very odd issue with the latest security update, (2010-005).
Since the update, whenever ClamAV goes out to check for new definitions and database updates, all of my DNS clients lose connection during the few minutes that it's working. I've verified this by watching the logs as the updates happen. Everything is fine, and the second that ClamAV starts running, DNS fails on all the clients, then starts again after the update process.
Anyone else notice this? And more importantly, how should I go about disabling ClamAV, since I don't run a mail server off this particular server.
    Thanks!

The System Info below your post indicates that you are running OS X 10.5.8. The FaceTime Beta requires a minimum of OS X 10.6.4.

Hi, I'm trying to load Facetime on my MacBook and it says "You are missing a critical security patch. Please use Software Update to install Security Update 2010-005". I've checked and all my software is updated. What do I do?

First off, iOS 5 will not run on Macs.   You need to give us your Mac OS X on your Mac to determine which security update you need.  Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac.     And then read the link here:
