Security update 2008-007: not installing

I used 'software update' from the apple menu to download this security update of 31 MB yesterday.
It got downloaded and while installing (during shut down), there was an error message saying i need to contact the manufacturer.
Also in the window that asks to restart now or later - the enter/return button is not working for selection and it is working only while using the track pad.
next time when i use the software update, it does not start downloading (looks like the previous downloaded file is still in the buffer) and it straight goes to window asking for restart now or later.
and the same problem continues.
should i have change some setting?
also i tried to download the security update 2008-007 for client INTEL from apple downloads site (around 139 MB). this too indicated an error after downloading.
the last security update had changed the keyboard backlight set to off. i did not notice it initially.
later i noticed and wondered if the keyboard is damaged. after going thro the discussion forums, i went to the preferences and found the keyboard backlight not selected. after selecting it, it was okay.
any soultions please?

Whoa - slow down there. That update is for Tiger. DO NOT attempt to use it with Leopard. You have to read the large print:
System Requirements
Mac OS X 10.4.11 Tiger

If you are remiss in applying the wrong updates, anything can happen and usually does.
Be very careful when doing things manually.
First, boot into Safe mode and at login screen select restart and let system reboot normally.
Down the CORRECT security update and install it.
I believe this is the one for you:

  • Mac Mini will not boot after Security Update 2008-007

    Hello,
A G4 Mac Mini machine I was asked to take a look at will not boot after the owner (succesfully) installed Security Update 2008-007 from Software Update. Booting always hangs at the blue screen after the Apple logo, and booting in verbose mode reveals that WindowServer is crashing repeatedly. Permissions and filesystems have been repaired, PRAM reset, etc. Safe boot also exhibits the same problem, but it is possible to boot to single user mode. Hardware checks out fine with diagnostic utilities.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? Unfortunately, backups are not available (it's not my machine =).

Hi Arkku , and a warm welcome to the forums!
I'd certainly give Sig's advice a try first.

  • Security Update 2008-007 Error When Installing...

I am running a MacBook with OS 10.4.11 and since it's release, I have not been able to install security update 2008-007. It downloads no problem but at the end of the installation process a message reads "an error occured while installing." No details or further info are displayed. I have tried the different links in the forum, auto software update, apple.com, and all multiple times. I've tried the permissions repair, restarting, etc and now I am out of patience and options. Is this a user error, computer error, or program error? Is this update worth the trouble or just wait until the next one? Thank you in advance for any help.

Try installing while booted in Safe Mode. Maybe something else is running that is interfering.

  • Macbook won't boot after installing Security Update 2008-007 (Intel)

I installed security update 2008-007 (intel) on my MacBook last night using Software Update, but now my machine won't boot at all. All I get is the gray start-up screen with the dark gray apple, but there's no spinning progress bar or anything. After 5 minutes or so, the machine auto-restarts, but again hangs on the gray start-up screen. It does this over and over again until I shut it off. I tried to boot into safe mode by holding down shift right after the chime, but it still wouldn't boot (again, not even a spinning progress bar). Can anyone please help me? I really don't want to lose my photos/movies, etc. I'll backup everything promptly if I can just get it to boot. Thanks.

Hi jared-lee, and again, a warm welcome to the forums!
First for safety, "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
This may or may not fix the problem, but may.
Do you have another Mac around?

I installed security update 2008-007 yesterday and now several applications refuse to open: adobe acrobat, itunes, and the image capture application for my HP scanner/printer, so far have "closed unexpectedly immediately upon opening. This is my first entry on a discussion board, so let me know if there's a better way to get some good advice

Hi finnst, and a warm welcome to the forums!
You're doing great for a first post!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

  • Can't Install Security Update 2008-007

Using Software Update it states that it downloaded Security Update 2008-007 ver 1.0. When I restart my computer it begins the installation process. However, it hangs on "Configuring Installation".
When I try to manually download and install the Security Update it won't allow me to choose my hard drive as the volume. It states that the volume doesn't meet the 'requirements'.
I have a MacBook Air SSD with 12GB of space available. Anyone have any ideas? Is this update not for the MBA? Or do I need to change some settings somewhere to get this to install?

I solved the issue by going to apple's supprt site and downloading the standalone installer.
Take note in Software Update how big the file is that it wants to download. Mine was 31Mb.
So when I went here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ I downloaded the 31MB file of the security update.
I then opened the installer, let it install and restart, now the security update doesn't come up when I open Software Update.
Does this work for others? Make sure you are getting the correct file off the apple site. Check the size of the file in Software Update.

  • Security Update 2008 007 failed to install

I just attempted to install Security Update 2008 007 but it reported installation failure. Do I try again or wait for another version?

How did you try to install it? Via Software Update or from a direct download?
    About Security Update 2008-007
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3216
It can be downloaded from here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/security_updates/
Make sure you choose the correct version for your system!
Try re-installing it again, but repair permissions first, and don't forget that it requires a re-start.

  • Security Update 2008-007 causing troubles

Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong forum.
Since Security Update 2008-007 was released, I could not install the update through Software Update as it could not save the file. I located the 131MB installer on the Apple Downloads site and proceeded to install it once downloaded. The install was successful and my computer rebooted, a little slowly and operations weren't as fast as usual. Then the problems began...
I launched Safari and tried to view my Gmail, which then crashed my Safari and my computer. I got a blue screen and then the desktop appeared and all applications were closed [not including Finder]. I opened Safari > Preferences > Security and turned off Java, plug-ins and JavaScript which seemed to solve the problem, although I had to turn JavaScript back on to log-in to this site.
After this, I tried to download the 10.5.5 Combo Update, as I read somewhere that this might fix my problems, but Installer keeps quitting "unexpectedly" and I can't run the install. Also, many of the programs in my dock won't launch; the same happens when I try to launch them from the Applications folder in Finder.

If anyone can help in this issue, it would be much appreciated, as it appears that Security Update 2008-007 is playing havoc with my system!

It would help to know exactly what you mean by this, like if you got an error message & if so, what it said. If not, what indication was there that the file could not be saved?
I have not read the log part of your post carefully, but my guess would be that you have some corruption of your file system. To check for & correct this, boot from your Leopard installer disk & run its copy of Disk Utility (in the "Utilities" menu item you will see when the installer screen opens) & do a "Repair Disk" step. If any repairs are made, you can try the combo update again, but it is possible that corruption hosed some essential files & you will have to reinstall the OS.
If no repairs are made, this is not the root of the problem & something else will have to be done to find it.

  • Security Update 2008-007; Mac pro; Leopard=lost internal HD

I just said yes to the security update 2008-007 on my Mac Pro, running Leopard (10.5.5). On restart, my internal 500GB Western Digital Hard Drive does not mount. This is the second time this has happened. About a month ago, after installing a security update (probably 2008-006 but I don't remember), that drive crashed, failed, would not mount. Western Digital replaced it. I don't use Time Machine but I do back up to external firewire drives. It took me a couple of weeks to tediously re-set-up my new WD 500GB like the old one. All was well until I just ran the Security Update 2008-007. On restart, the new WD500 is gone.
I am now looking at the various updates. I see there are ones for servers, for clients, and for Leopard. Is it possible one or the other is the right or wron one? Is there a way to tell what exactly happened?
To say the east, this is big time annoying and has left me very hesitant about accepting Apple's update recommendations.
    Any help? Thanks

Yeah. I agree it's a stretch. So too did the Apple "specialist." He agreed it's unusual but felt that indeed I got two WD hard drives in a row that failed. He suggested they sent me a refurbished one after the first one crashed. On the phone with Western Digital, they didn't argue at all and the tech guy said, "they will ship me a better drive." Nice, huh? better than what? And why not better the first time. Anyway, they are honoring this as they did the first one. But my confidence in WD drives has dropped. And, in spite of the unlikliness of Apple updates causing the problem, I'm leery there as well.
Thanks for the tip on a method for updating. I'll follow it.

  • MacPro Hangs on Restart of the Security update 2008-007!

After installing Security update 2008-007 and performing the required restart my MacPro 2x 2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (OSX 1.5.5) freezes on the apple grey logo with the spinning gear.
I`ve tried the Safeboot mode (shift key) but the screen remains the same (apple grey logo with the spinning gear).
I`ve tried the Single User mode (command+s) and done "/sbin/fsck -fy" and reports nothing different.
I`ve tried the verbose mode and there`s no apparent error message but the last line is:
Extension "com.apple.driver.iTunesPhoneDriver" has no explicit kernel dependency; using version 6.0.
And iTunes got updated as well (in the same session as Security update 2008-007) to 8.0.1
I`ve tried the Target mode (T) and used the "Repair Disk Permissions". There`s no error either.
I`ve tried booting from the leopard disk 1 and doing a Hardware test. All ok.
I`ve tried booting from the leopard disk 1 and using disk utility to "repair disk". It returns: disk appears to be OK in green.
The last thing I could do, unfortunately was Archive and Install Leopard with all configurations and definitions remaining.
That works and the system boots ok. Apparently the system is ok, but my two services (Qmaster and MatrixStore) doesn`t work anymore. I`ll probably go wi the fresh reinstall.
    BUT... for my surprise...
I have 4 mac pro 8 cores. This was the first one that I`ve installed the upgrade and restarted. I thought that was a problem with THIS particular Mac, but to my surprise, when I`ve done system update on the second MacPro the exactly same thing happens.
I have other 2 macs to upgrade but I`m afraid to have to reinstall all 4 macs! That`s a lot of work!
    Can anyone knows how to:
1- find what it`s happening to my macs after this upgrade (and it`s not for everyone as would be lot`s of topics about this right now).
    and
2- how to recover/uninstall the last upgrade in single user mode or with the leopard dvd on bash terminal.
    Very best Regards!

My method: +never apply updates until you backup and clone the system.+
Run Disk Warrior (Apple DU First Aid leaves some problems behind)
Never repair permissions from the DVD now with Leopard, you must run Repair Permissions either while booted or from a system running the same version, older versions of Disk Utility can cause trouble.
Test on the new clone. Security and combo updates can be applied to non-boot system. So you can boot from your emergency drive and apply it to your working drive. Perform a repair permissions, before you boot off the drive (another reason for applying updates from a 2nd drive).
Security Updates can plague and cause problems. There are always some that are fine, and some that run into "gotcha" or two. MacFixit usually has reports, tips, troubleshooting as soon as or within a day or two of any updates. And it seems like all your systems with similar configuration? looks like it wasn't tested.

After all these years and updates, I trust them less now than I use to, and it seems like there is always some risk (more risk than I've had with my other OS). OS X needs Acronis along with restore points, a way to apply and undo updates more easily.

  • Security Update 2008-007 grays out Fast user switching, et. al.

I have noticed, over the course of installing the Security Update 2008-007 on several computers of various types (Power PC and Intel, all running at least OS 10.5.4 initially), that after the restart I see in System Preferences>Accounts>Login Options that the Automatic login 'drop down', 'Show Password Hints', and 'Enable fast user switching' are all grayed out. It noticed this after running the 10.5.5 combo update, among other system updates, on several of the computers at work. I was able to trace the problem to the Security Update 2008-007, because on most of the computers I purposely installed this separately after all other updates had been run and these same fields were grayed out on all but 2 stations. I have not found the common factors or discernible differences yet between the computers that were problematic and those which were problem free and tried unsuccessfully to avoid/correct the issue by running permissions repair before and/or after the Security Update and/or 10.5.5 update, as well as downloading the updater files and installing them locally. Has anyone experienced this problem after the Security update was run? I hope someone can suggest a fix, because Fast User Switching is much less intrusive on our employees if they don't have to log out each time I have to check their stations for something! Thanks.

Alas. I tried that already without result, as well as running Leopard Cache Cleaner and Disk Warrior as acts of desperation. I didn't expect them to help and they didn't. All user spaces display the grayed fields, including the System Administrator. I have tried deleting a few plist files, which I were hoping were relevant, but no success yet. I have one last station running 10.5.4 which hasn't had this particular security update applied yet, so I'll see if I can isolate the culprit. Thanks for trying to help! I do appreciate the effort.

  • Security Update 2008-007 and RDC 2.0.0

After I installed Security Update 2008-007 today, I have been unable to run MS Remote Desktop Connection for Mac 2.0.0 to a Windows XP computer on my network. I get the message that I was disconnected from the Windows computer. Before installing the update, I had no such difficulty. The Windows computer itself is running and has network connectivity otherwise (Internet, etc.), so the problem does not appear to be at the Windows end of the connection. No settings have been changed on either computer in the interim. I have repaired permissions and rebooted, but that did not help. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have had the same issue, but it had nothing to do with the Security Update. My problem was the the Remote Connection failed to terminate the last time I used it. So each time I would try to login from then on, it immediately rejected the login and disconnected me. I ended up having to wait about 5 minutes for it to clear itself. I have also had to reboot the PC to clear up the connection. May not be the answer you are looking for, but might be something to think on.

  • Security Update 2008-007

After installing this update, computer is no longer recognizing the internal speaker for audio output. Repaired permissions but that didn't help. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Maybe resetting the PRAM will help the sound issue you are having. I saw this while trying to find the answer to why my fast user switching was grayed out after installing Security Update 2008-007:
Cannot adjust volume A MacFixIt reader writes:
"After installing Security Update 2008-007, I can no longer adjust the system volume. Checking the System Preferences -> Sound, gives me 'No output devices found' in the Output tab."
Some users have reported that resetting the PRAM has worked to resolve this issue. To do this, shut down your Mac, then start it back up while immediately holding the following keys: Command, Option, P and R. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the third time.

  • Trouble with saving Security Update 2008-007

  • FCE 3.5 wouldn't open after installing Security Update 2008-007

Installed the update from Software Update like a good little girl, then couldn't open FCE, which is my main reason for owning the Mac. Don't remember the details. After it dawned on me that the update or my simpleminded approach to installing it was probably the cause of the malfunction, I rebooted from my Carbon Copy Clone, first time ever for real. After everything was demonstrably back to what passes for normal, I sent CCC another $25 to celebrate!
Now I have checked for updates and SU 2008-007 is still sitting there but I am afraid to try it again. How was I supposed to know about doing disc repairs and god knows what-all else before & after? And what else don't I know that will skunk me? Looks like there have been a number of problems on this forum traceable to SU 2008-007. Kind of like dear old Service Pack 2 on the PC...
What's the downside of NEVER installing the update? Or can somebody clarify for me how to do it safely?
    Thanks,
    Sharron

    Hi Sharronuss,
Let me give you my full method...
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
The combo update for PowerPC-based Macs...

The combo update for Intel-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html
Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
