Security Update 2008-008 installs old version of Shockwave plugin

It appears that the recent Security Update 2008-008 for 10.4.x does not properly check to see if a newer version of Shockwave plugin is installed.
We have Shockwave 11.0.3r470 installed, but the Security Update 2008-008 has installed version 10.1.1.r116
This results in two version of Shockwave being installed on the system.

BDAqua wrote:
Hi , and a warm welcome to the forums!
Thanks BD Aqua, Hello to all.
What locations are those two please?
The Shockwave Plugin is at:
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/DirectorShockwave.plugin (for Shockwave 11.x)
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/NP-PPC-Dir-Shockwave (for Shockwave 10.x and earlier)
Support files for Shockwave 11 are at:
/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Shockwave 11
while support files for Shockwave 10 are located:
/Library/Application Support/Macromedia/Shockwave 10
The issue here is that the SecurityUpdate 2008-008 will install Shockwave 10 even if Shockwave 11 is already present. This results in having two different version installed simultaneously.
Safari even reports both in the "Installed Plug-ins" report.
My guess would be that it is not good to have both installed at the same time!

  • Installed Security update 2008-008 ; programs won't work

    Hello,
I installed the latest security update, 2008-008, last night on my Macbook Pro version 10.4.11. Now, the majority of programs on my machine quit unexpectedly right when I try and start them up.
iTunes, iCal, VLC media player, Photoshop, Installer, internet connect, activity monitor, directory access... the list goes on.
    How do I fix this?
    Thanks!

Two things seem to be ultimate solutions for Security Update 2008-008 problems from what I have read.
One is Archive and Install which will replace the corrupted system but then requires you reapply all your updates. Select the keep settings and preferences when doing A&I. Make sure you select that option when doing A&I if you want settings and preferences kept. Some third party applications may need reinstalling if they have special components.

The other is to try to re-install the security update on the main drive while booted from a secondary drive or in Single User Mode. This could be from another Mac computer while your first one is in Target Disk Mode, perhaps a bootable backup drive, or possibly from your installer disc. Here's references for those methods:

    Updating
There's been recent discussions as to what steps are truly necessary in doing a minimal problem update.
I think #1 to which all agree is to make sure you have a backup of your computer in case you do need to back out of it again.
Some like to boot from their installer discs or an external backup and verify (and if necessary repair) their internal drives as well as drive permissions. This is done with Disk Utility. You can verify a drive while booted from the same drive but sometimes this produces spurious errors. Repairing a drive (if necessary) has to be done while booted from another disk. Permissions repair can, and is probably best done, when booted from your internal drive.
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck
Using Disk Utility in Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later
    Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions
You can also go to the step of booting into safe mode to do the install.
Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)
Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup
I like to download the update onto my computer and install it from there rather than let Software Update do it. I know a few people who had problems with doing the update via software updater found a manual install to work.
    Repair permissions again afterward.
It also helps to only install one update at a time and to run the computer for a while to make sure it is behaving well.
Almost all of the above steps (except backup) have been questioned as to necessity because probably many people have done successful updates without doing them. I say they can't hurt, they can very likely do good (especially if your computer isn't regularly maintained), so why not do them to be safe.
Finally, you could try re-applying the combo updater for 10.4.11, then re-apply the security update carefully. Since it seems to be applications (but not just Apple ones) that are having problems it may be some component used in all of these is broken.

  • Security Update 2008-008 No user window.

I do apologise if this is the incorrect discussion group, but I couldn’t find a email address to report this so I thought I would post it and it may eventually get to the right people.
I’ve just updated (using Software Update) the latest Security Update 2008-008. The Mac was running perfectly beforehand (all updates and security updates to date).
When using the Mac I regularly switch between user accounts, however I have found that after the update if I log out of a user account (with no admin privileges) the main user accounts window does not appear. (I am left with the desktop picture of the account I have tried to log out of and no menu bar.)
The only solution I have found to this problem (in each instance after the initial one, I have waited for 5 minutes to give the system a chance) is to hold down the power key until it switches off the Mac. The Mac then starts up fine and displays the user window, from there I can choose which account I want to use.
As I switch between these accounts throughout the day, shutting down the Mac, between switches, will seriously impede getting anything done.
Nevertheless, the above problem does not manifest itself when I have logged out of the admin account, this appears to be working as it should. The list of user accounts opens and I can choose an account as normal. Additionally, the problem does not appear if a user account is already open and I am logging onto another account from the fast user switching menu.
I realise the short term solution is to have an account open all the time, but this is not ideal, as the open account I am sure, will be using resources unnecessarily.
If however, someone has a more substantial solution then I would be most grateful for the suggestion.

Accounts are numbered 501, 502, etc. as the computer sees them, so that's the origin of the multiple trash folders. Each account has its own trash.
As you can read in an earlier post and through the links, safe mode does move some things to the trash so it does act as a temporary purge of items.
I just tried reading the file about what the most recent security update changes. I don't really understand most of it but I didn't see anything that specifically said log out modification to me. It is pretty hard trying to resolve logout issues and you seem to have this strange combination of accounts that work and don't work.
One thing you haven't done but could try is booting from your installer disc and run Disk Utility's repair drive (not permissions but drive). Actually, running Applejack does a reduced version of the same thing but it's worth a try if only to see what it reports about drive condition.
Dock. I am not sure what the dock would have to do with this. You could try removing the com.apple.dock.plist file from your home directory > Library > Preferences folder. Just move it to someplace else temporarily and see if that clears up anything on a logout.
It appears that this Secuirty update 2008-008 (10.4.11) is causing an ever increasing circle of problems as more posts are appearing in various places on the Internet.
This happens after any kind of update, but especially an update which changes components of the operating system. It is really a matter of matter of perception. It looks like there's a lot of problems because the hundred people who do have problems post here to ask about the problem. What you don't see are the thousands (millions?) of people who do not post because they did not have a problem.
There's been recent discussions as to what steps are truly necessary in doing a minimal problem update.

I cannot bear the idea, but having spent the last 20 or so hours trying to solve this problem, I am left with reinstalling the entire system from scratch. I cannot believe that this is my only alternative. And for the moment at least it will remain on the shelf.
Well, I am not a computer expert (just another Mac user with a few years on the clock) and I am running out of ideas. Maybe somebody else will happen by who can figure out what is going on. Can you think of anything that is different about the problem accounts that makes them different from the others? Any special software installed?
Incidentally, how much free space do you have on your hard drive? Sometimes stragne issues can arise if drives are getting over full.

  • "Security Update 2008-008 (Client PPC)" problems

    Hi,
I updated my G4 yesterday with 'Security Update 2008-008 (Client PPC)' & stuck with blue screen with spinning wheel. I tried booting it in safe mode, but it didn't help. Still the same. Pressing 'C' with install disk gives access to Disk Utility, I verified permissions, which goes smooth. Can not proceed with installation since have only 700 MB available disk space & no backup.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi Mahesh, and a warm welcome to the forums!
hpr3 has some good advice, but just to add...
700MB free space is a real problem, quite likely OSX will start self destructing below 2-3 GB free space, and really be slowed down with less than 20% free space on the HDD.
You simply must get another Drive & backup, so you can Install the OS again.

  • OSX cannot boot-up after installing Security Update 2008-008

    Hi Everyone.
    I'm using a MacPro 2 x 2.66Ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon with 3GB RAM with Tiger 10.4.11.
After installing Security Update 2008-008, my OSX was not able to boot-up. The screen shows the Apple Logo and the spinning grey gear wheel. It stayed that way for several hours.
I finally switched it off and re-installed OSX 10.4.8 using the Start-up disk that came with my MacPro.
Now I've updated the OSX, all the software & updates EXCEPT Security Update 2008-08. My MacPro works fine now.
Was Security Update 2008-008 the cause of this problem ?
    Sincerely,
    Azman

Was Security Update 2008-008 the cause of this problem ?
Probably not directly. Very likely something was not quite right on your computer before the update and the update happened to exacerbate that. A number of people feel that optimizing the maintenance of your computer before doing the update and doing the update under controlled conditions minimizes problems.

  • Please help: PPC Tiger 10.4.11, dock crashes after security update 2008-008

I had no problems so far, everything worked great on my iBook G3 PPC 700Mhz 10.4.11 till I installed the latest Apple Security Update 2008-008 through Software Update in System Preferences. After restarting my system is gone crazy. The dock crashes like every three seconds, usually when I click on something, besides that I cant click normally, I have to like click 2 or 3 times to get something opened and also the mouse jumps from one place on the screen to another place on the screen. A security update is ought to fix a problem, not to create a problem. I cant and wont do a new systeminstall, it will take me days to get my iBook back in the state it was a couple of days ago with all the applications and other third party components. Please help me fix this problem to get my iBook back to normal as it was a couple of days ago.
    Thanks in advance.

Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, try dragging these 2 files to the desktop then reboot...

  • Security Update 2008-008 knocks out router

Since installing security update 2008-008 on two computers (MacBook Pro and Power Mac G5, both running OS 10.4.11) earlier this week, my router (Belkin Wireless G model F5D7230-4) no longer connects me to the internet. I also found that my Network preferences had been unlocked and "changed by another application" (or some similar message). It was extremely difficult to get past this message in order to make any changes to these preferences. I was finally able to be quick enough to click on OK on the message and then on Assist Me before the next identical message window returned. From there I could lock Network Preferences. But nothing looks off in the configurations.
Any ideas on getting my router connected again?

Hi CecG, and a warm welcome to the forums!
To stop the pop-up, Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.
Try this cure for Security update...

  • Finder(?) problem after installing security update 2008-008

I hope someone can help with this problem:
After I installed Security update 2008-008 the finder(?) has begun to behave irratically.
Whenever the mousepad is clicked, the dock slides off to the left and the click is not registered by whichever application I am in. Mostly menus are affected. I now have to click the application and menu item several times before the click is registered.
Safari is particularly badly affected with the pointer jumping around the screen when trying to copy an url (dock keeps sliding to the left), page back/forward doesn't work - url links within web pages are not recognised. Furthermore, when using yahoo mail, menus like 'send' and 'save' are not recognised.
Any suggestions how to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated!
    Andrew

    HI Andrew,
This is most likely caused by some 3rd part APP or kext that is now out of date.
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then test your problem there.
Now reboot in regular mode, if the problem didn't happen in Safe Mode, but does in Regular mode, See if there is anything relevant in...
    /private/var/run/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems
Also look in in Your Accounts Pref Pane Login Items window.

  • Help needed after installing Security Update 2008-008

Had the same problem everyone else has had. I got it back up and running using the Archive & Install procedure. Once I log in I get this error message:
"Application Transport Monitor could not be launched because of shared library error. "8<Transport Monitor><Transport Monitor><HotSyncLib.PPC>"
What do i need to do for this (reinstall a clean install of OS?)
Most of my programs work except for Itunes & Netbarrier Firewall.
Do I need to reinstall these programs.
    Thanks for any help.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to Everyone.

Hi Marty, and a warm welcome to the forums!
"Verify/Repair the HDD the Repair the Permissions." What's that?
It's important to Verify or Repair the Disk before you repair Permissions...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • Does Security Update 2008-008 include a fix for "Network Settings" message?

I tried posting this earlier but it was removed, I suppose, because it contained a rather mild comment expressing disappointment. Here is the expurgated version. I'm not inviting rants.
I've looked through the description of the update (it's titled, incorrectly, for 10.5.6 only; in fact, it's a release for 10.4.11, as well.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3338
My "user to user," technical question: Am I correct in concluding that there is no mention in this description of a fix for the "Your network settings have been changed by another application" "problem" which first appeared with 2008-006, almost three months ago? It seems that way, but I don't pretend to understand all the technical language, so I'm asking someone to confirm.
Description aside, has anyone yet seen what this update, in practice, does or does not do for this issue? Thanks

    Seems so, unfortunately

BUG: Renaming a file causes Finder to restart. This started occurring after installation of the Security Update 2008-008. I can't rename files or folders.

  • What next.... (Security Update 2008-003)

    Greetings all,
I know that there are numerous threads here already about this problem that many of us seem to be having. Mine is similar so I will try to explain with as much detail as I can. Please read the whole post because I have followed most if not all of the advice I've found in replies to this topic and nothing has worked thus far. My desktop (Gigabit Ethernet G4 running 10.4.11) is the unit with the problems, my laptop (15" Powerbook running 10.4) is running fine and has pulled field medic duty in trying to fix this. I've been able to successfully Target Disk the desktop from the laptop and all my files are still there, the bugger just won't finish starting up. I explain in detail below.
So the other night I downloaded and installed the Security Update 2008-003 via the Software Update pane. All went well, no error messages or hiccups. I restarted the computer as necessary and it gets all the way to the end of the blue progress bar on the "Starting up Mac OS..." stage and hangs. I waited a long time and it still just hung. Sound familiar?
I know many people have said that this is due to pre-existing problems or messy systems but I run maintenance on mine fairly regularly and it was working strong before the update.
Here's what I have tried so far:
    • started in safe mode or at least I tried to, i held shift but it still got to the same place and hung up so maybe I didn't hold it at the right time? I held it after the chime until I saw the grey apple screen with the progress clock
    • put my desktop into Target Disk mode and connected to my laptop, I ran Disk Utility and repaired the disk until everything came out clean. Repair/Verify Permissions, however, was grayed out (more on this in a second).
    • Ran Disk Warrior from the laptop on the Target Disk desktop drive. It recognized it and attempted to run a clean up but I kept getting an error message saying it is too severely damaged and can't be repaired. This even after I had run Disk Utility with a clean bill of health.
    • I tried resetting the PRAM several times but it didn't help.
    • started in single-user mode and ran "fsck -fy" per some unix commands I found on the forums. it came back clean numerous times. I also tried running repair permissions via the same screen but the cursor would just jump down to a blank line and nothing I input would do anything.
    • held option during startup to bring up the startup disk selection screen. It loaded but the little stopwatch just spun and wouldn't let me select my second hard-drive as my startup. That would've solved a ton of problems right there as the second drive never got the update and I've used that to fix the first in the past.
    • with the desktop targeted I ran terminal in the laptop and tried the unix repair permissions command from there but it gave me some jargon about the command and a line about ownership of the drive and wouldn't do it.
    • finally, I put my desktop into target disk mode, and started the laptop from the OS installer CD. I ran Disk Utility from the laptop on the desktop and I was able to do both Repair Disk AND Repair Permissions. The disk was fine, the permissions had some fixes but came back clean on a second pass. I figured this would fix it all but, alas, no dice. Still hanging at the end of "Starting Mac OS...".
Is there something I am missing or anything else I can try? As I said all the files and info are still there because I can get to them just fine via the Target Disk mode, it just won't finish loading the OS. My other issue is that I have a second hard drive in the desktop and the Target Disk mode only mounts the primary drive. The second drive is my backup drive and I need to be able to access it.
Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated folks, thanks so much!!

    Update:
I also looked in the system.log file and found this repeated numerous times at the end:
launchd: /system/library/coreservices/loginwindow.app/contents/macos/loginwindow port /dev/console exited abnormally: segmentation fault
    Below it, this:
launchd: getty repeating too quickly on port /dev/console, sleeping
Interspersed among the lines about the loginwindow were other inputs, most notably these:
The following startupitems failed to properly start:
    /library/startupitems/symdcinit
    -execution of startup script failed
    system/library/startupitems/fibrechannel
    -execution of startup script failed
Again, are any of these files ones that can be trashed and will be rebuilt by the OS when it starts? Or can copies be dragged from my healthy system to the failing one to overwrite them?
IF you are fully backed up AND the two systems are running the same version of the OS on the same architecture (e.g. both PPC or both Intel) then you could try dragging items from the laptop to replace. Alternatively, you could use Pacifist to extract them from the install disk or from a later OS update where available.
I would create a directory /Library/StartupItems.disabled and drag the contents of /Library/StartupItems into that folder. Nothing there is critical so disable all of that stuff for now. I would do the same with /Library/LaunchDaemons.disabled and /Library/LaunchAgents.disabled if applicable. Then do the same with any corresponding folders in your user Library.
You'll still need to replace the FibreChannel item because that's system and presumably important.
I'm thinking, though, that the number of errors you're seeing probably indicates an archive and install would be the best option.

  • Security Update 2008-007 causing troubles

Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong forum.
Since Security Update 2008-007 was released, I could not install the update through Software Update as it could not save the file. I located the 131MB installer on the Apple Downloads site and proceeded to install it once downloaded. The install was successful and my computer rebooted, a little slowly and operations weren't as fast as usual. Then the problems began...
I launched Safari and tried to view my Gmail, which then crashed my Safari and my computer. I got a blue screen and then the desktop appeared and all applications were closed [not including Finder]. I opened Safari > Preferences > Security and turned off Java, plug-ins and JavaScript which seemed to solve the problem, although I had to turn JavaScript back on to log-in to this site.
After this, I tried to download the 10.5.5 Combo Update, as I read somewhere that this might fix my problems, but Installer keeps quitting "unexpectedly" and I can't run the install. Also, many of the programs in my dock won't launch; the same happens when I try to launch them from the Applications folder in Finder.

If anyone can help in this issue, it would be much appreciated, as it appears that Security Update 2008-007 is playing havoc with my system!

Since Security Update 2008-007 was released, I could not install the update through Software Update as it could not save the file.
It would help to know exactly what you mean by this, like if you got an error message & if so, what it said. If not, what indication was there that the file could not be saved?
I have not read the log part of your post carefully, but my guess would be that you have some corruption of your file system. To check for & correct this, boot from your Leopard installer disk & run its copy of Disk Utility (in the "Utilities" menu item you will see when the installer screen opens) & do a "Repair Disk" step. If any repairs are made, you can try the combo update again, but it is possible that corruption hosed some essential files & you will have to reinstall the OS.
If no repairs are made, this is not the root of the problem & something else will have to be done to find it.

  • Security Update 2008 007 failed to install

I just attempted to install Security Update 2008 007 but it reported installation failure. Do I try again or wait for another version?

How did you try to install it? Via Software Update or from a direct download?
    About Security Update 2008-007
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3216
It can be downloaded from here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/security_updates/
Make sure you choose the correct version for your system!
Try re-installing it again, but repair permissions first, and don't forget that it requires a re-start.
