Security Update 2009-001: my powerbook g4 is in a restart loop

When I tried to install the Safari 4 beta browser I got a message that I needed to install Security Update 2009-001 first. I was surprised because I get updated automatically but nonetheless I selected "Software Update" from the Apple menu and got the "new software for your computer message".
I clicked install. After a minutes m powerbook shutdown and started back up. I heard the familiar gong, got the grey screen and progress indicator. Then after 5-6 minutes my powerbook restarted. It then went through this process again and again. After the 8th time I tried powering off, taking out the battery and letting it sit. Same result. Tried starting up in safe mode. The powebook would not boot up in safe mode. I tried connecting it to another computer using firewire ad T at start up to make the powerbook act like a firewire drive. Tried instructions on macfixit to remove plist and kernal files this way. Disconnected, powered down. Same result.
If I cannot get it into safe mode and removing possibility corrupted files does not work, what the heck can I do?
I am going to turn it off, unplug, take out battery and let sit over night and see if it works.
Short of that, I use Time Machine and I am thinking of just formatting the hard drive and backing up from the last Time Machine back up (before the update).
Any better ideas?
Thanks

Mediablogger,
See if you can boot from your Leopard install cd that came with your computer. If you can, you might be able to repair the disk...
After the computer boots from the CD select File>Disk Utility. From there select Repair Disk, and hope for the best...
If Repair Disk finds errors, and then says "Disk not Repaired" just keep running it again until you get a "disk repaired" message (it only fixes one problem per run).
Hope this helps,
Bob

  • Can't install Security Update 2009-001

I was trying to install Safari4 Beta and it wouldn't install stating my volume (hard drive) didn't meet the volume requirements. Then I tried installing Security Update 2009-001 and got the same message. I'm not real computer savvy, what am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Don't know. Boot with your install disk, select your language, select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, and repair the disk and permissions. Try installing again. If still no go, create a new admin user account, log into it, and try installing. If the problem remains, download and install the 10.5.6 COMBO updater, repair permissions, and restart.

  • Security Update 2009-001 (Server Leopard) 'killed' perl

I've just done the update using Software update and just about everything I look at is working, except that perl seems to have gone almost AWOL. I seen it pop up occasionally in the Activity Monitor, but, when I try to run perl scripts from the command line or the cron jobs that ran flawlessly before the update, nothing happens. Period.
Anyone have the same experience and/or any suggestions of how to get out of this problem or cleanly back up to the previous server state (i.e. just before installing the update)?
    Thanks.

The update only hoses IO and Time::HiRes on modified systems. The problem should not occur on stock installations.
IO prevents CPAN from working and needs to be installed manually (without CPAN).
Compress::Zlib has already caused problems in the past and depending on one's configuration may need to be installed manually (without CPAN).
To install IO, do the following:
    mkdir -p /SourceCache
    cd /SourceCache
    curl -O http://cpan.mirror.solnet.ch/authors/id/G/GB/GBARR/IO-1.2301.tar.gz
    tar xzf IO-1.2301.tar.gz
    cd IO-1.2301
    perl Makefile.PL
    make
    make install
Next use CPAN to install Time::HiRes
Finally, if Compress::Zlib cannot be tamed with CPAN, install it manually. Different file, but same procedure as for IO.
    HTH,
    Alex
P.S. As a rule of thumb, never install an update on a modified system before waiting at least a week to see what issues may crop up. This applies also for stock systems, but in particular for modified systems.

  • PPC Security Update 2009-002

May be of some use to other or could be we just had a bad day.
Installed Security Update 2009-002 (last update was 2008-003) and find that amavisd will not run. Seems that MIME::Base64 is missing which stops amavisd from running. Reinstalled MIME::Base64, and all fine now.
As I say, could be a one off.

    Tim,
the Perl issues were present in Security Update 2009-001. Since you did not update to that version, 2009-002 installed those changes as well.
As a rule of thumb, if you skip an update, you always need to go back and read its release notes together with the ones belonging to the current update. Same applies to combo updaters.

  • After Security Update 2010-001: Airport Card Not Detected

Currently running OS X 10.5.8 on a Mid 2009 MacBook Pro.
Here's the issue. When I boot up the machine and click the AirPort drop down it tells me that there is no airport card detected. Under system profiler it says the same thing. If I boot to a 10.6 Mac OS Install DVD and open system profiler, the AirPort card is detected. This occurred after a reboot prompted by the Security Update 2010-001.
So far I have repaired permissions and repaired disk. No fix.
I reset the PRAM/NVRAM and SMC. No fix.
I booted to an OS X image on an external drive. No fix.
I cannot boot to the Apple Hardware Test (D at startup) because my company requires PGP disk encryption. I could decrypt but this would take at least 6 hours (not counting re-encrypting afterwards).
I tried replacing the extensions. No fix.
There were no firmware updates applied or any other major OS updates.
Anyone have anything else I can attempt?

    anyone else see that??
Yes, Already covered in full here. Strange but no problem.

  • Security Update 2006-001 - The return?

    Hello!
According to my software update which popped up after waking the computer I should install the latest security update (PowerPC), even though I installed it just a couple of days ago. Or, that's what I think...
Should I just go ahead and install this 'second edition' too, or is there a way to check if the first update was installed properly (and to check that it actually happened)?
    Thank you!
    PowerBook G4 Aluminum   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I installed security update 2006-001 last week and my SU shows nothing futher. And further, there is nothing further. Either your SU prefs are corrupted or it did not install properly.
Look in /library/receipts to verify that you have that receipt.

  • Security Update 2006-001 Killed network preferences

After upgrading with the 2006-001 Security Update, none of my network preferences will set up correctly anymore. DHCP doesn't seem to be doing anything, and when I tell it to use a manual address via the system preferences, it appears that it's not actually doing anything. Mac OS System Preferences will not even detect that I have an ethernet cable plugged in, though if I use ifconfig and route I can get a LITTLE bit of traffic to go out, so I know it's connected and working.
Any one have any ideas on this? Absolutely frustrating because I can no longer work until this is fixed (sitting in an internet cafe trying to figure out what the problem is). I'm running 10.3.9 on a 1.2Ghz 12" Powerbook. I don't remember my Unix days well enough to try to manually set up routes and our DNS settings, nor do I know if the appropriate tools are in Mac OS, but the Apple network preferences are clearly busted.
Is there anyway to uninstall an update?

    12" 1.2 Ghz PB   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I had the same Network & Airport issue after installing Security Update 2006-001 on my wife's iBook G3 running 10.3.9 Trying to access our Airport base station wirelessly would inevitably hang as I selected the Airport network.
I noticed that every time I shut down the computer there was a brief showing of the keychain window asking to allow keychain access...this right as the computer went down (no chance to hit the allow button).
Spent the better part of an entire afternoon trying to fix this problem. Then read all the posts here (amazing how many people have problems with this update). Tried to reset permissions - didn't work. In the end, I rebooted the Airport...went into the Airport Admin Utility with my PowerBook to fiddle around...removed our Airport network from the keychain in my wife's iBook...explored other aspects via the keychain access utility.
None of that seemed to work. I also figure I reset the permissions about half a dozen times (with subsequent reboot). None of that was working either...until after one permissions reset & reboot things came good. I got the keychain window, allowed access, and hey presto...online. So far it's been OK for over 12 hours (including after reboot).
    What exactly worked? I don't know. "It's a mystery".
One thing's for sure...this update is not going on any of my other machines!
Come on Apple...surely you can do better than send us automatic updates that break our computers and sap our time!

    Thanks all!

I figured it out. I had sym-linked my /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.5 to the macports version of Python. Restoring this back to the original 2.5.1 version fixed the problem.
If anyone else is having issues installing this update, make sure you restore anything you've modified (listed here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3438) to the stock versions.

  • Ethernet speed slow since security update 2014-001

    Dear community
I'm running a Mac Pro early 2009. OSX 10.7.5. Internet through Ethernet cable connected to a dlink router dsl-g624t. This has been my setup for years. All worked fine.
As of last few days (corresponds with my updating the system with apples security update 2014-001) that my Internet download speed is 0.01 Mbps it used to be 5.0 Mbps. I can't connect to anything. Sometimes it's ok for a few seconds then dies down completely. Connecting to the routers own IP address is slow as well.
I've plugged the Ethernet cable into another mac (laptop) and all runs at approx 5.0 Mbps as it should. I've connected the Ethernet cable between the Mac Pro and the mac laptop and transferred a 1Gb file both ways with out any noticeable speed issues. I've connected my ipad wirelessly to the router and I can achieve good speeds, again about 5.0 Mbps. Same with my iPhone.
In system pref/network it states the Ethernet 1 is connected, with an IP address etc. as if there was no problem.
What is going on. The Ethernet cable works, the router works, a connection over Ethernet between my two macs works.
What doesn't work anymore is my Mac Pro connecting to the router via Ethernet. It's so slow it can't load a simple web page in either safari or Firefox, other web connecting apps time out as well.
    Someone please help
    With much thanks in anticipation
    Bmw75

Going to reply to my own question here.
I've never let a mac get the best of me in 15years of working with them but this problem had me stumped. Anyway I did figure it out. Not being very experienced with network issues I had to tincer about a bit. Anyway the fix for this should someone else have it can be found here in... system preferences/network/ethernet (1or2)/advanced.../Hardware/ once in this option window I had to change 'configure' to 'manual' and 'speed' to '10baseT/UTP' and 'Duplex' to 'full-duplex' and 'MTU' to 'Standard 1500'. I then had my full ethernet speed back. I believe it had all been changed by the recent security update.
I hope that helps someone sometime.

  • Security update 2014-001 failed due to errors

I have attempted to load Security update 2014-001 on a 2009 MacPro running 10.8.5 (2x 2.8GHz Quad Xeons with 12GB of RAM and 1.2 GB of space on the OS disk) but it fails "due to errors". I have tried from the App update and directly from the Apple support site.  I even reloaded the OS and still get a fail.  Of course I suspect a compromise with this result but how do I fix it?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Select
    /var/log ▹ install.log
from the hierarchical list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, click the Clear Display button in the toolbar of the Console window and then try the installation again.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

I have Microsoft Office 2004 on my MacBook (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo).  It is currently up to date with Microsoft updates.  I am running Mac OS 10.6.8.  I just updated my Mac software with "Security Update 2012-001".  I am now unable to print (Epson NX510 printer) from Excel or Word.  When I click on the Print menu item in Excel, there is a flash in the background like it is trying to open the print window, but nothing else.  I am able to print from other programs like TextEdit, Mail or KakeidaGraph.  As far as I know I have the latest Epson print driver.
Also, I am also unable to open an existing Excel or Word file from the open menu - both programs lock up and do not respond.  I have to force quit.  After I restart Excel or Word I can open an existing file by double clicking on the file, but if I again try to open another file from the open menu, Excel or Word lock up.
    Any similar problems?

    Howdy,
Apparently some are reporting that this causes the older PowerPC (PPC) applications that are supported in 10.6 via 'Rosetta' to crash upon attempting to open/save/print using any dialog box, or fail in other similar ways such as simply not printing or quitting, or freezing/hanging/crashing of the application.
I have read of some companies that have indeed submitted proper bug reports to Apple, but that is not a guarantee of a bug-fix being issued.
    You might wish to read:
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/snowleopard/index.html#d02feb2012
If you are unsure if you are still using PowerPC apps, if the application is currently running, look under the 'Activity Monitior' (in Applications -> Utilities), or alternatively you could check in the System Profiler, Applications. Check the column "Type".
Here is a fairly simple way you can restore you system and restore you applications functionality again, if you don't have a recent clone or good Time Machine backup that you can restore from. If you do, restore from your backup prior to having installed the Security Update 2012-001.
    Time Machine restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Lion recovery partition (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility. Select the backup prior to your issues, and it will be restored back to the state it was in at that time.
If you can't easily restore from a backup, you can instead do the following:
    - You first start by reinstalling your OS X 10.6.x, this will preserve all your user data, your applications, no worries there.
    - Then install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (links provided below)
    - Make sure you're printers are showing up correctly in your system preferences, if not, re-add the printers
    - Then finally, run the Apple Software Update (by pulling down the Apple Menu), and install any and all remaining updates, except do not then re-install the Security Update 2012-001. It is possible that you may have to reboot after installing some of the updates, and you may even need to run it a 2nd time to make sure that you've got all updates, except NOT the Security Update 2012-001.

  • Multiple Errors - G5 Quad/Mac OSX 10.5.8 - After Security Update 2009-006

I'm using a PPC G5 Quad, and after I installed Security Update 2009-006, I began having problems even being able to open project files Final Cut Pro 6. So I had to force quit FCP6, but even that wouldn't close the application.
I figured the issue was probably just with the application, so I manually powered down the computer and only wound up getting two blank blue screens on my monitors when I powered back up.
Powered down again, disconnected power cord for 2 minutes, then powered back up.
Attempted to open FCP6, didn't work, wouldn't quit using "Force Quit."
Opened Motion 3 to create a new project outside of FCP6 - when I selected "Save Project As" the application became unresponsive. Would not quit even when I selected "Force Quit."
To test if there was an issue with other applications besides Final Cut Studio 2, I opened Pages and tried selecting "File->Open." This made the application unresponsive, and would not quit with "Force Quit."
    I repeated this test with:
    QuickTime Player
    Adobe Photoshop CS
    Preview
    Microsoft Word
    Safari
ALL of these applications became unresponsive when I tried using the command "File->Open"
I then decided to try installing Security Update 2009-005 to see if that would help.
Because Safari was locked, I downloaded Security Update 2009-005 using Firefox, then re-downloaded Security Update 2009-006.
After downloading both security updates, I manually powered down the computer, disconnected the power cord for 2 minutes, then re-powered on the computer.
I immediately installed Security Update 2009-005 and restarted the computer.
Once it restarted, I opened up Pages and was successfully able to use the command "File->Open" to open both templates and previously created files.
I then opened FCP6 with no issues, and successfully opened and re-saved an existing project file.
I then re-installed Security Update 2009-006, and re-started the computer according to its prompts.
At first, it appeared that the issues were resolved. I opened Pages and was able to use the command "File->Open" to open an existing template.
I then quit Pages and attempted to open a new Finder window. Immediately I got a spinning rainbow ball and got the message on my screen "System Failure" etc etc, and the last line read something about "Panic" or "System Panic - we're holding here..." or something to that effect. Quite strange.
I'm now in the process of attempting to repair disk permissions using Disk Utility. The permissions that seem to be out of order are with:
private/var/log/secure.log (what and where is this???)
    System/Library/CoreServices/Airport Base Station Agent.app/Contents/CodeResources"
    various Airport Utilities
    Various FrontRow
    Various backrow
Several places I don't recognize such as usr/bin and usr/sbin
And internet plugins related to FlashPlayer

How full is the hard drive?

  • IMac G5 won't completely start up after failed Security Update 2009-004

    The problem:
Last night I attempted to run the latest Security Update (2009-004) on my 2nd Gen iMac G5. The update did not reach completion and I received an error message saying it had been moved to the trash. I attempted to empty the trash and start again. At that point, the trash would not empty, the computer would not shut down, and finder would not relaunch. I had to use the power button to shut it down--have not been able to complete the start up again since. The computer begins to start up, i.e., a bong, and the Apple logo, and spinning wheel (which goes on forever and never progresses to startup login screen).
    What I've already done:
-Successfully started up from the install disk
-Run Disk Utility to repair disk and disk permissions; everything checks out okay
-Run Apple Hardware Test; everything checks out okay
    -reset PRAM
    -unplugged/replugged computer to reset SMU
-backed up some files via Firewire/Target disk mode
    My questions:
What is the best, easiest, most logical thing to do next?
Should I reinstall system software from G5 install disk?
What happens when you reinstalll from a disk that has an older version of OS? and how do you get the software back up to date afterward?
    Thanks!

I had the same problem though my mac was ok for a couple of days after the update. Tried to boot from original install disk (Tiger, though recently upgraded to Leopard), it didn't boot and disk got stuck. I took my Mac (G5 iMac circa 2005) to a specialist who ran disk warrior - HD ok, he did a few other tests and concluded it was a logic board prblem and uneconomical to repair. On this advice I have purchased (at considerable expense) a new iMac. If this has been a problem with the update that can be fixed I am 1) furious with apple that they have released an update that causes near fatal problems & 2) would like to know if there is any way I can make a claim against anyone (Apple?) for purchasing a new mac that I can ill afford due to the destructive nature of an update.
A friend phoned me earlier with the same Mac problem and I didn't connect my problems to the update but now I've done a search for it, I realise it is a widespread problem. Has apple made any statement about it?

    - Then install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (links provided below)
    - Make sure you're printers are showing up correctly in your system preferences, if not, re-add the printers
    - Then finally, run the Apple Software Update (by pulling down the Apple Menu), and install any and all remaining updates, except do not then re-install the Security Update 2012-001. It is possible that you may have to reboot after installing some of the updates, and you may even need to run it a 2nd time to make sure that you've got all updates, except NOT the Security Update 2012-001.

Have just tried to install Security Update 2012-001 for Mac OS 10.6.8 and get message saying cannot download. Download stalls at Zero kB downloaded. Dialog says an error occurred during download.
Internet connection is fine and first time denial has occurred.

Looking at all the posts about the deficiencies of this update, you may have just lucked out, especially if you are, like many of us, still running PowerPC programs under Rosetta.
