Security update 2009-5 fault fix + 10.5 upgrade?

Hi, I can't restart after the Security update/iTunes etc. like others on the forum.
Seems like Install disk, Disk Utility etc. seems to be the fix on this.
However, I have lost my 10.4 install disks (long story, I am legit). I was going to get 10.5 anyhow. If I do will I be able to fix this problem or will it just confuse the issue or will I need a 10.4 disk?
Thanks

Some of the usual "can't start up" measures don't require an install disk. Even if they don't fix the problem, thay might be at least able to tell you whether your HD directory is OK and could support a Leopard "Archive and Install."
First I would try a [Safe Boot|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564].
If that doesn't work, then see if you can start up in [Single-User Mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492]. If you can, then go through the steps in the section "*Use fsck if necessary*" in the support article [Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417].
Even if you can't show that your HD directory is currently OK, if your data is safely backed up elsewhere then you could still buy Leopard, try to fix the HD from that install disk, and if still unsuccessful erase and re-format the HD before installing Leopard. You would then have to re-install your apps and restore your data from your backups.

  • IMac G5 won't completely start up after failed Security Update 2009-004

    The problem:
Last night I attempted to run the latest Security Update (2009-004) on my 2nd Gen iMac G5. The update did not reach completion and I received an error message saying it had been moved to the trash. I attempted to empty the trash and start again. At that point, the trash would not empty, the computer would not shut down, and finder would not relaunch. I had to use the power button to shut it down--have not been able to complete the start up again since. The computer begins to start up, i.e., a bong, and the Apple logo, and spinning wheel (which goes on forever and never progresses to startup login screen).
    What I've already done:
-Successfully started up from the install disk
-Run Disk Utility to repair disk and disk permissions; everything checks out okay
-Run Apple Hardware Test; everything checks out okay
    -reset PRAM
    -unplugged/replugged computer to reset SMU
-backed up some files via Firewire/Target disk mode
    My questions:
What is the best, easiest, most logical thing to do next?
Should I reinstall system software from G5 install disk?
What happens when you reinstalll from a disk that has an older version of OS? and how do you get the software back up to date afterward?
    Thanks!

I had the same problem though my mac was ok for a couple of days after the update. Tried to boot from original install disk (Tiger, though recently upgraded to Leopard), it didn't boot and disk got stuck. I took my Mac (G5 iMac circa 2005) to a specialist who ran disk warrior - HD ok, he did a few other tests and concluded it was a logic board prblem and uneconomical to repair. On this advice I have purchased (at considerable expense) a new iMac. If this has been a problem with the update that can be fixed I am 1) furious with apple that they have released an update that causes near fatal problems & 2) would like to know if there is any way I can make a claim against anyone (Apple?) for purchasing a new mac that I can ill afford due to the destructive nature of an update.
A friend phoned me earlier with the same Mac problem and I didn't connect my problems to the update but now I've done a search for it, I realise it is a widespread problem. Has apple made any statement about it?

  • Security Update 2009-004 Mac OS 10.4 Intel & Keychain permission (Mail etc)

After upgrade above, constantly got KeyChain permission request and no matter how many times you granted it, it kept asking, someone else found the cure this is a synopsis of the answer: (Answer extracted from http://unsanity.org/archives/2007_01.php ; found by BDAqua , thanks for everything!)
For those who are put off by the above website here is what was done to 'Fix KeyChain constantly asking for permission to update as your software has been upgraded" (this occurred after Security Update 2009-004 for 10.4 Intel, could not get mail without that blasted box constantly showing up)
In order to fix this problem if you are having it, just open the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal) and type:
    *sudo mv /var/db/CodeEquivalenceDatabase /var/db/CodeEquivalenceDatabase.old*
Hit return, it will ask you if you are serious, if so enter password, well, swallow hard and do it; then re-boot; on re-signing in it asks you for 'Keychain permission to update (in my case Airport) as it has been upgraded, 'curse the stars' and hit yes, *everything will work!* Going to Safari, in my case, it asked for permission, and I gave it and it works fine, same thing for each account in Mail; once okayed it works fine and doesn't keep asking for Keychain permission for more than once!

  • Security Update 2009-001: my powerbook g4 is in a restart loop

When I tried to install the Safari 4 beta browser I got a message that I needed to install Security Update 2009-001 first. I was surprised because I get updated automatically but nonetheless I selected "Software Update" from the Apple menu and got the "new software for your computer message".
I clicked install. After a minutes m powerbook shutdown and started back up. I heard the familiar gong, got the grey screen and progress indicator. Then after 5-6 minutes my powerbook restarted. It then went through this process again and again. After the 8th time I tried powering off, taking out the battery and letting it sit. Same result. Tried starting up in safe mode. The powebook would not boot up in safe mode. I tried connecting it to another computer using firewire ad T at start up to make the powerbook act like a firewire drive. Tried instructions on macfixit to remove plist and kernal files this way. Disconnected, powered down. Same result.
If I cannot get it into safe mode and removing possibility corrupted files does not work, what the heck can I do?
I am going to turn it off, unplug, take out battery and let sit over night and see if it works.
Short of that, I use Time Machine and I am thinking of just formatting the hard drive and backing up from the last Time Machine back up (before the update).
    Any better ideas?
    Thanks

    Mediablogger,
See if you can boot from your Leopard install cd that came with your computer. If you can, you might be able to repair the disk...
After the computer boots from the CD select File>Disk Utility. From there select Repair Disk, and hope for the best...
If Repair Disk finds errors, and then says "Disk not Repaired" just keep running it again until you get a "disk repaired" message (it only fixes one problem per run).
    Hope this helps,
    Bob

Should I be asking here? I'm not sure if I'm eligible to talk to a Apple representative directly.
    Thanks all!

I figured it out. I had sym-linked my /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.5 to the macports version of Python. Restoring this back to the original 2.5.1 version fixed the problem.
If anyone else is having issues installing this update, make sure you restore anything you've modified (listed here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3438) to the stock versions.
    Cheers.

Did last security update 2009-02 also update Mail?
    My Mail is v2.1.3 (753.1)
Since the update it crashes at random and sometimes Nothing shows in the body of the email (no message), I quit and restart Mail and the message body is there??
    Could it be something else?

    Hi Krag,
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.

  • Security Update 2009-004 Digital Signature failure

Recently prompted to install this update "Security Update 2009-004 (Intel)" so I initiated install only to get a pop up after a few mins saying:
*The update "Security Update 2009-004 (Intel)" can't be installed.*
The digital signature for this package is incorrect. The package may have been tampered with or corrupted since being signed by "Apple".
Anyone know what this slightly worrying message means and any advice on what to do next? I've read elsewhere that the security update isn't really necessary for my situation (being a simple macbook user) but more concerned about the tampered and or corrupted aspect of the message.
    Should I be worried readers?

Hi BucksFraz, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
The combo update for PowerPC-based Macs...

The combo update for Intel-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html
Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

  • Multiple Errors - G5 Quad/Mac OSX 10.5.8 - After Security Update 2009-006

I'm using a PPC G5 Quad, and after I installed Security Update 2009-006, I began having problems even being able to open project files Final Cut Pro 6. So I had to force quit FCP6, but even that wouldn't close the application.
I figured the issue was probably just with the application, so I manually powered down the computer and only wound up getting two blank blue screens on my monitors when I powered back up.
Powered down again, disconnected power cord for 2 minutes, then powered back up.
Attempted to open FCP6, didn't work, wouldn't quit using "Force Quit."
Opened Motion 3 to create a new project outside of FCP6 - when I selected "Save Project As" the application became unresponsive. Would not quit even when I selected "Force Quit."
To test if there was an issue with other applications besides Final Cut Studio 2, I opened Pages and tried selecting "File->Open." This made the application unresponsive, and would not quit with "Force Quit."
    I repeated this test with:
    QuickTime Player
    Adobe Photoshop CS
    Preview
    Microsoft Word
    Safari
ALL of these applications became unresponsive when I tried using the command "File->Open"
I then decided to try installing Security Update 2009-005 to see if that would help.
Because Safari was locked, I downloaded Security Update 2009-005 using Firefox, then re-downloaded Security Update 2009-006.
After downloading both security updates, I manually powered down the computer, disconnected the power cord for 2 minutes, then re-powered on the computer.
I immediately installed Security Update 2009-005 and restarted the computer.
Once it restarted, I opened up Pages and was successfully able to use the command "File->Open" to open both templates and previously created files.
I then opened FCP6 with no issues, and successfully opened and re-saved an existing project file.
I then re-installed Security Update 2009-006, and re-started the computer according to its prompts.
At first, it appeared that the issues were resolved. I opened Pages and was able to use the command "File->Open" to open an existing template.
I then quit Pages and attempted to open a new Finder window. Immediately I got a spinning rainbow ball and got the message on my screen "System Failure" etc etc, and the last line read something about "Panic" or "System Panic - we're holding here..." or something to that effect. Quite strange.
I'm now in the process of attempting to repair disk permissions using Disk Utility. The permissions that seem to be out of order are with:
private/var/log/secure.log (what and where is this???)
    System/Library/CoreServices/Airport Base Station Agent.app/Contents/CodeResources"
    various Airport Utilities
    Various FrontRow
    Various backrow
Several places I don't recognize such as usr/bin and usr/sbin
And internet plugins related to FlashPlayer

  • Windows clients not able to FTP after security update 2009-0006

My FTP server hasn't changes in over a year. Recently, a client complained that they were seeing strange things when they logged into the FTP server.
What they used to see was a series of folders that stated 'Permission denied' and one single folder that had their name on it that they had permission to access. How I accomplished this was to set up an FTP folder and through ACL give them read/write permissions, but deny full control to all other clients. This way they can't see anything but their own FTP folders.
After the security update, what my clients now see is a list of files with names like this:
    drwxr-xr-x 4 administrator staff 136 Dec 15 15:35 [client name]
    Total 80
    Warning: [client name]: Permission Denied
    Warning: [client name]: Permission Denied
    Warning: [client name]: Permission Denied
I think this issue started after I installed the security update 2009-006, but I can't be sure. What's strange is that I can login using a clients username and password using Transmit on my Mac, but when I try gain access using Windows XP and connecting through network places, I can't get in.
I did read in another posting about reverting to a backup of the ftpaccess file in /Library/FTPServer/Configuration folder. I compared my backup to the live server and they are the same...
Any help would be awesome, as I'm not exactly a trained IT guru...

  • After Security Update 2009-002 no connection to server

After running Security update 2009-002 I can not connect to a server, e.g. a webdisk with Apple+K command. Rebooting does not help, nor entering fresh login data.
    Does anybody have a clue?
    thanks in advance,
    Flip

Hello Flip, and a warm welcome to the forums!
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Window Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.
Also remove it from the CMD+k window by highlighting it and clicking the little minus button.
Resetting your keychain in Mac OS X...
If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.

    Reboot, test again.

  • Will there be a Security Update 2009-006 for Tiger PPC

Apple released Security Update 2009-006 for Leopard today, but not for Tiger.
Is there going to be any more support and updates for Tiger, since Snow Leopard came out?

    Hahahahah, yeah....
Actually, I just tried to reply to your message using Safari 4.0.4 and repeatedly got this error:
    Request Timeout
The server timed out while waiting for the browser's request.
    Reference #2.4da21160.1258046993.0
It did that with another page too, but is loading others fine. I am wondering if there is an issue. I may have to downgrade to 3 again, if that is possible.
I got used to using Firefox because I just upgraded from OS X 10.3.9 and had to use Safari 2.x, which doesn't work so well with the web anymore.

  • Security Update 2009-006 crashed my Macbook 13" (Intel Core Duo)

    Hi all,
After accepted the automatic updates proposed by the OS, I was soon invited to restart the machine.
No files were downloaded (Security Update 2009-006, Itunes and Safari updates as well)
After rebooting the macbook, a grey screen with the apple logo and the turning wheel is showing for 1 to 2 minutes..... and this is repeated forever between the classic chime start up.
I repaired permissions from my DVD OS X Leopard and nothing happens.
Could you pls help to solve this problem ?
    Regards to all there,
    Daniel - Patagonia Argentina

    HI Daniel,
*"I repaired permissions from my DVD OS X Leopard and nothing happens."*
Not the same as making sure the startup disk is ok.
Boot from your install disk and check the startup disk for errors.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
    What is Safe Mode
Update your system software to 10.5.8 using the Combo update available here.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1058comboupdate .html
After updating to 10.5.8, run Sofware Update.
As with any software update(s), repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • AFP Connection Problems after Server Security Update 2009-006

After installing the Security Update 2009-006 on the Server, we have Problems to mount Shares from two differnt AFP-Servers on the Client.
The Client and the Server have a binding to AD.
The Client can connect to Server1 via AFP.
But after this, the connection to Server2 shows the Volumen List from Server1!
Same Problem when the first Connection mounts Server2 and then Server1.
I tried the second connect with DNS-Name and IP-Adress.
There is no Problem when i am useing SMB.
Have anyone a Idea or the same Problem?

  • Can't install Security Update 2009-001

I was trying to install Safari4 Beta and it wouldn't install stating my volume (hard drive) didn't meet the volume requirements. Then I tried installing Security Update 2009-001 and got the same message. I'm not real computer savvy, what am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Don't know. Boot with your install disk, select your language, select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, and repair the disk and permissions. Try installing again. If still no go, create a new admin user account, log into it, and try installing. If the problem remains, download and install the 10.5.6 COMBO updater, repair permissions, and restart.
