Security Update 2011-003 (Snow Leopard ONLY - Really, Really?!?!?!)

What anyone who doesn't have Snow Leopard isn't at risk of getting tagged by dreaded "Mac Defender" Trojan Horse???
Come Apple Snow Leopard isn't the only OS that is at risk, you really should make this avaible to ALL Mac users, not just those who have purchased and installed Snow Leopard.

It would apparently have been a much bigger undertaking  to provide similar functionality for earlier systems. You'd probably have to start from scratch, whereas for Snow Leopard it's a small update to a pre-existing feature. This isn't to say, though, that Apple shouldn't have provided something for earlier systems anyway.
From
About Security Update 2011-003:
Description: The OSX.MacDefender.A definition has been added to the malware check within File Quarantine.
The "File Quarantine" check for "potentially unsafe files" began with OS X v10.5, but the addition of a specific  "malware check" feature using a list of known malware was new in Snow Leopard.
From
About file quarantine in Mac OS X v10.5 and v10.6:
Snow Leopard checks for malware
Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard builds upon the existing unsafe file type check by also checking for known instances of "malware", or malicious software. When you open a quarantined file, the file quarantine feature will check to see if it may include known malware.

  • Security update 2011-003 cannot install

I've tried everything on multiple computer to install the Security update 2011-003. At first, it downloads, but it stalls during installation. Then I downloaded the install direct from Apple. It installed, but stalled saying it had 1 minute until completion. That lasted over an hour. I ran disk utility, then the direct install again and the same thing happened: installed until 1 minute until completion and stalls.
Anybody else with the problem and solutions?

Exactly which version of Mac OS are you on? 10.6.?
And, which model Mac do you have?
The security update is for OS 10.6.7 only. Not sure if the new 2011 iMacs need the update or not.

  • Can't install Security Update 2012-003 for Leopard

I can't install neither Security Update 2012-003 nor Flashback Removal Update. The installer says the software cannot be installed on my machine. I am on a G5 (PPC) iMac running OSX 10.5.8. What's going wrong? By the way, automatic software update did not find any updates for me. I had to download the updates manually from Apple's software support page.

There is no update or removal tool for PPC machines because Flashback won't run or even install on them.
You should still disable Java in your browsers as some other malware may come along that will work.

safari need to be updated in the version of 10.6.8. where miliions of users still use this version of osx believing this version is the best yet.

OS X Snow Leopard is very outdated OS X. It cannot meet today's necessary security requirements.
Unless you use Rosetta for PowerPC apps, your Mac may be able to upgrade to v10.10 Yosemite.
Read here >  Apple - OS X Yosemite - How to Upgrade
    That would install Safari 8.

  • Leopard Security Update 2012-003 for Mac OSX 10.5.8

I just discovered a Leopard Security Update 2012-003 in reading an article in MacWorld, but when I checked my computer, I found that I did not get it through Software Updates' check for updates. Is there something wrong with my Software Updates? Or is just that this must be manually downloaded by the user? My iMac is an Intel Mac.

    Hello Laura,
Could you have SWUPD set to automattically get updates?
Check Library>Reciepts at root of the drive, nit your user Library, & see if it's been installed.
Also, if this is a PPC iMac it only was for Intel iMacs, since PPCs weren't able to get that FlashBack infection for one thing.
If Intel, you coild always get it directly & re-apply it...

  • After running Office 2011 for 1 year with no problem all programmes stopped working today. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and now can not even put in registration key. Is it  Security Update 2015-003 problem?

After running Offcie 2011 for 12 months with no problem, today I can not open any of the programs.
Have followed some advice forums but no resolution.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled and now get the same error when trying to open one of the programs and trying to add activation key.
Updated with Security Update 2015-003 yesterday is this causing the problem?
    Running Yosemite 10.10.2

Me too. It has been 3 days since I have no access to iCloud mail. No matter I check it on iCloud.com, Mac, iPhone or iPad, the mail app says I have incorrect password. Specifially, when I check email on my Mac, the message below appears and prompt me to type in the password. I am sure that I've entered the correct password already.
The iCloud IMAP server “p99-imap.mail.me.com” rejected the password for user “my user name”
Enter your password again or cancel.
Staying away from email for a day is OK, but definietly not for 3 or 4 days. Someone, please tell me what to do. If it has to do with the servers, Apple, PLEASE FIX IT ASAP!!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Security Update 2013-003 is available for Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion. You can download the Snow Leopard version > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1670
You don't have enough space to install the update, so you have to delete things from the hard drive or move them to an external drive. See > http://thexlab.com/faqs/freeingspace.html

I have a macbook pro and the software with snow leopard only has upgraded to 10.5.8, do I need to purchase mountain lion to upgrade to 10.6.8?

Your machine likely can't handle Mountain Lion 10.8 nor 10.7, if it does it will run slow and very higly likely a lot of your third party software and drivers for printers and scanners won't function anymore.
It's because your 10.5 era (or earlier) machine is rather dated, hardware has advanced and is faster, the newer OS X versions have gotten bloated.
I do recommend you call Apple via phone and order the 10.6.3 white retail disks, backup your personal data off the 10.5.8 Mac to a external storage drive and when the disk arrives, stick it in and run the upgrade installer.
Once that's finished, reboot and use Software Update to get to 10.6.8 and stay there. You can buy stuff from AppStore, just don't upgrade to 10.8 (or 10.7) as thats when you'll have issues.
10.6 should run your currrently installed PPC software and hardware drivers. But 10.7/10.8 will not.
10.6 is receiving security and other updates from Apple as more than 50% of OSX users are still on it.

  • HT202369 iMac STUCK - Installed this security update 2015-003

    SECURITY UPDATE 2015-003
i was surfing and all of sudden i had a completely WHITE-PALE-CREAM (i dont know) screen, no text-icons-nothing.
i then restart the iMac (27-inch Mid 2011, i7 3.4ghz) and it ALWAYS hangs on the apple logo, greyish screen, and the loading bar stops at about 20-25% then the white screen seems getting slightly darker (still light grey), but the apple logo goes away
and it stays like that no matter what.
recovery mode doesnt seem to work
this less than half a day i have installed this latest SECURITY UPDATE

    fixed (apparently)
    thank you :-)
i managed to get Internet Recovery
then (one of the many times) later, push only CTRL (i have tried hundred times many combinations with option, command, shift, control) on start up
    and all came back nicely
ALT + CMD + S (single user) and wrote
    fsck -fy
did a couple of times as suggested on the internet until all looked fixed
    thenk to get Internet Recovery
    ALT + CMD + R
(+ i fully downloaded yosemite on an external hard disk on another mac)
as soon as i went back in, i verified-fixed the hard drive permissions etc.
    thanks thanks

  • Setting the Software Update Server on Snow Leopard, Leopard and Tiger

I have made an app that will set the Software Update Server on Snow Leopard, Leopard or Tiger. It will set the Software Update Server by checking the Server's version to see if it is compatible with your OS version. If you try to use a Leopard (no Snow Leopard Hack (See http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10297359#10297359)) or Tiger Server with Snow Leopard it will say it is not compatible. If it is it will set it. If you are trying to use a Tiger Server with Leopard it will set it but you will only get Tiger updates.
The app is beta, if you find any problems or have any comments please reply.
    Download: http://iwczone.co.uk/projects/iSetSU/

You might want to look into throwing Software Update Enabler onto your clients.
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/18059
Basically, it's just a little app that points the client in the direction of the Software Update Server - you just enter the IP of the server into the config field. With a standalone server I don't think you can get the clients to see the server without something showing them the way.
It's really very tiny and simple - I believe it just edits a com.apple.softwareupdate.plist or some such, but it made life a lot easier for us in our environment.
    Hope that helps.

  • Trackpad no longer drags after Security Update 2015-003

I am running Yosemite 10.10.2 on my MacPro 2010. After I installed Security Update 2015-003, I noticed my Apple Trackpad can no longer drag. Here are the symptoms:
I CAN move the cursor around the screen using the trackpad.
I CAN click, and appropriate responses occur.
If I click on a menu in the menu bar, then move (hovering) the cursor with the trackpad down the list of menu choices, they DO NOT highlight. I can click on one, and it WILL BE performed, but a submenu would NOT pop out. I CANNOT drag down the menu and to the side to bring out a submenu using the trackpad.
I CANNOT move a window or other object by tap-dragging on trackpad (double tap, holding the second tap to turn it into a drag)
I CANNOT select a phrase or paragraph by highlighting it by tap-dragging on trackpad
Hover behaviors on web pages DO NOT occur (so links that should highlight, menus on a web page that would normally drop down on their own, do not do so) if cursor is moved by trackpad.
Tool tips or other hover behaviors in web pages or outside of web browser DO NOT occur if cursor is moved by trackpad.
All behaviors are NORMAL if I use my Wacom tablet stylus to perform the same cursor move.
So, if I move the cursor over something using the trackpad, nothing happens. If I then move the cursor over the same thing using the Wacom stylus, highlighting or other hover behavior occurs.
Yes, I've changed the batteries in my trackpad, and it works fine otherwise. It does NOT skip or exhibit symptoms of a poor connection. Three-finger and four-finger drags to go to Previous Page in Safari, or switch desktops, DO work.
    Only single-finger dragging is gone.
This issue occurs on my 2010 MacPro running 10.10.2, but does not occur on my 2009 MacPro running 10.10.2 at work.
Both have the Security Update 2015-003 installed, as well as all other current AppStore updates.
So Security Update 2015-003 would not seem to be the issue, but that was the thing which changed on my OS immediately prior to the beginning of the undesired behavior.
There is no setting in the Trackpad control panel that has to do with single-finger dragging. I've also checked the Mouse control panel and the double-click speed is the same between the two computers (the one where Trackpad drag works, the other where Trackpad does not work).

    SOLVED:
This issue went away by itself after a reboot for a software installation.

  • Unable to Reboot After Latest Apple Updates (SA-2011-06-23-1 and Security Update 2011-004)

    Hi All,
After applying today's updates (06/23/2011) in APPLE-SA-2011-06-23-1 Mac OS X v10.6.8 and Security Update 2011-004, my MacBook will no longer boot. Prior to updating, the MacBook workked perfectly (except for the occasional error entry in the system and kernel log). The MackBook model number is A1278, with a RAM upgrade (4 GB).
When booting in NORMAL mode, the grey screen with Apple logo (and spinning wheel) is shown for about 50 seconds. The device never shows the blue background or login window. It simply shuts down like the power was pulled.
When booting in SAFE mode, the grey screen with Apple logo (and spinning wheel) is shown for about 1 minute 30 seconds. The blue background is shown and quickly transitions to the login windows. About 45 seconds after the login window is shown, the machine shuts down like the power was pulled.
On the few occassions I logged in to take advantage of the 45 second safe mode window (before shutdown), I was *not* able to copy off my log files (in /log/var) to a thumb drive because the computer would not mount the USB device.
When I peeked at the system's log file, I caught the tail end of "signature validation failed" for a bunch of hardware - from video to audio. I can only peek because the computer will shutdown before I have an opportunity to study anything in detail. The failed verifications may or may not be related to the shutdown - signature verfication might be disabled in safe mode; I simply don't know.
It seems the world's most advanced operating system [tm] is performing the world's most epic failure. Any ideas to get this brick working again would be greatly appreciated.

    Here's what I've found:
    (1) I cannot run Disk Utility because I don't have my install disk handy
    (2) I cannot run Repair Permissions because Apple does not make a separate ISO available to fix their mistakes
    (3) There does not appear to be a wat to back out updates (ie, no Add/Remove Programs)
I was able to boot into safe mode and perform:
        > sudo bash
        $ chmod -R root /
Amazingly, the command ran to completion. Unfortunately, it did not fix the problem. As soon as some spare cycles were available (interesting indeed!), the machine shutdown.
+1 to Apple engineers for creating a broken patch
+1 to Apple quality assurance for letting the junk out the door
+1 to Apple, for not offering an ISO to fix a broken installation
+1 to Steve, who has managed to keep his anti-trust lock on the hardware and broken software
    Great job, Apple

  • APple MBP v1.3 Update after a Snow Leopard 10.6.4 reinstall

Is the Apple MBP v1.3 update part of SNow Leopard 10.6.4 Combo Update and if not how do I go about installing Apple MBP v1.3 update after I have already installed snow leopard Combo Update from 10.6.3?
From the APple Website the v1.3 update will only install if you have 10.6.3 Snow Leopard and might become an issue if trying to install it after 10.6.4 Combo Update has been installed.
    So my question is:
Is the Apple MBP v1.3 Update part of the 10.6.4 Snow Leopard Combo update?
    Thanks

Run Software Update. If it doesn't list Apple MBP v1.3 Update as an available update then you don't need it.

  • What next.... (Security Update 2008-003)

    Greetings all,
I know that there are numerous threads here already about this problem that many of us seem to be having. Mine is similar so I will try to explain with as much detail as I can. Please read the whole post because I have followed most if not all of the advice I've found in replies to this topic and nothing has worked thus far. My desktop (Gigabit Ethernet G4 running 10.4.11) is the unit with the problems, my laptop (15" Powerbook running 10.4) is running fine and has pulled field medic duty in trying to fix this. I've been able to successfully Target Disk the desktop from the laptop and all my files are still there, the bugger just won't finish starting up. I explain in detail below.
So the other night I downloaded and installed the Security Update 2008-003 via the Software Update pane. All went well, no error messages or hiccups. I restarted the computer as necessary and it gets all the way to the end of the blue progress bar on the "Starting up Mac OS..." stage and hangs. I waited a long time and it still just hung. Sound familiar?
I know many people have said that this is due to pre-existing problems or messy systems but I run maintenance on mine fairly regularly and it was working strong before the update.
Here's what I have tried so far:
    • started in safe mode or at least I tried to, i held shift but it still got to the same place and hung up so maybe I didn't hold it at the right time? I held it after the chime until I saw the grey apple screen with the progress clock
    • put my desktop into Target Disk mode and connected to my laptop, I ran Disk Utility and repaired the disk until everything came out clean. Repair/Verify Permissions, however, was grayed out (more on this in a second).
    • Ran Disk Warrior from the laptop on the Target Disk desktop drive. It recognized it and attempted to run a clean up but I kept getting an error message saying it is too severely damaged and can't be repaired. This even after I had run Disk Utility with a clean bill of health.
    • I tried resetting the PRAM several times but it didn't help.
    • started in single-user mode and ran "fsck -fy" per some unix commands I found on the forums. it came back clean numerous times. I also tried running repair permissions via the same screen but the cursor would just jump down to a blank line and nothing I input would do anything.
    • held option during startup to bring up the startup disk selection screen. It loaded but the little stopwatch just spun and wouldn't let me select my second hard-drive as my startup. That would've solved a ton of problems right there as the second drive never got the update and I've used that to fix the first in the past.
    • with the desktop targeted I ran terminal in the laptop and tried the unix repair permissions command from there but it gave me some jargon about the command and a line about ownership of the drive and wouldn't do it.
    • finally, I put my desktop into target disk mode, and started the laptop from the OS installer CD. I ran Disk Utility from the laptop on the desktop and I was able to do both Repair Disk AND Repair Permissions. The disk was fine, the permissions had some fixes but came back clean on a second pass. I figured this would fix it all but, alas, no dice. Still hanging at the end of "Starting Mac OS...".
Is there something I am missing or anything else I can try? As I said all the files and info are still there because I can get to them just fine via the Target Disk mode, it just won't finish loading the OS. My other issue is that I have a second hard drive in the desktop and the Target Disk mode only mounts the primary drive. The second drive is my backup drive and I need to be able to access it.
Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated folks, thanks so much!!

    RaptorRed67 wrote:
    Update:
I also looked in the system.log file and found this repeated numerous times at the end:
launchd: /system/library/coreservices/loginwindow.app/contents/macos/loginwindow port /dev/console exited abnormally: segmentation fault
    Below it, this:
launchd: getty repeating too quickly on port /dev/console, sleeping
Interspersed among the lines about the loginwindow were other inputs, most notably these:
The following startupitems failed to properly start:
    /library/startupitems/symdcinit
    -execution of startup script failed
    system/library/startupitems/fibrechannel
    -execution of startup script failed
Again, are any of these files ones that can be trashed and will be rebuilt by the OS when it starts? Or can copies be dragged from my healthy system to the failing one to overwrite them?
IF you are fully backed up AND the two systems are running the same version of the OS on the same architecture (e.g. both PPC or both Intel) then you could try dragging items from the laptop to replace. Alternatively, you could use Pacifist to extract them from the install disk or from a later OS update where available.
I would create a directory /Library/StartupItems.disabled and drag the contents of /Library/StartupItems into that folder. Nothing there is critical so disable all of that stuff for now. I would do the same with /Library/LaunchDaemons.disabled and /Library/LaunchAgents.disabled if applicable. Then do the same with any corresponding folders in your user Library.
You'll still need to replace the FibreChannel item because that's system and presumably important.
I'm thinking, though, that the number of errors you're seeing probably indicates an archive and install would be the best option.
