Security update 2011 causes incomplete login

Hi folks,
I just applied the Sept 2011 Security update from the Update  menu and it has wrecked me current user ID causing my login to only partially load and then stall. I am getting blue screens on attempted log outs and log ins, before any user dialog box comes into play.  I can do a safe boot but it still is unresponsive when attempting to log out.
I've run fsck -fy, permissions repair, unplugged USB, etc.  I reinstalled 10.6.8 Combo updater, but I'm still seeing the same problems.  Next step is Onyx clean sweep of the system.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
Jeff

Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk.
Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.

  • Could Security Update 2011-005 have caused WiFi slowdown?

I created this post earlier today:

I just realized that both computers have installed Security Update 2011-005 just recently (right before this problem started).
Could that have caused the problem?

Could that have caused the problem?
Very unlikely. Millions of users have updated their Macs. The forum would be flooded with posts about this if there were an issue.

  • Security update 2011-011 caused problems for Wacom tablet

I have Wacom Bamboo Fun (model CTE-650) tablet, which have since worked well after every passed "security updates". However, after I installed new Security update 2011-011, it started to act weird. I can move pen pointer on screen, but cannot select anything and can't move windows etc..
I checked the disk, verified and repair permissions, and also tried to install most recent Wacom tablet driver but nothing have helped so far. Does anyone experienced this? Any solutions..?

I too have problem with my Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet (in this case the CTE-450). It acts as normal mouse, it does not map to the screen coordinates, only to up. down, left right movement.
When I open the Tablet preference pane, it tells me it does not detect any tablet. I restarted, and nothing. I reinstalled the latest driver (Driver 5.2.4-4(RC) for OS X 10.6, 10.5 & 10.4 (PPC & Intel) from 15 Feb 2011) and still does not work.
Apple... is it you who invalidated my valuable piece of hardware?

  • Unable to Reboot After Latest Apple Updates (SA-2011-06-23-1 and Security Update 2011-004)

    Hi All,
After applying today's updates (06/23/2011) in APPLE-SA-2011-06-23-1 Mac OS X v10.6.8 and Security Update 2011-004, my MacBook will no longer boot. Prior to updating, the MacBook workked perfectly (except for the occasional error entry in the system and kernel log). The MackBook model number is A1278, with a RAM upgrade (4 GB).
When booting in NORMAL mode, the grey screen with Apple logo (and spinning wheel) is shown for about 50 seconds. The device never shows the blue background or login window. It simply shuts down like the power was pulled.
When booting in SAFE mode, the grey screen with Apple logo (and spinning wheel) is shown for about 1 minute 30 seconds. The blue background is shown and quickly transitions to the login windows. About 45 seconds after the login window is shown, the machine shuts down like the power was pulled.
On the few occassions I logged in to take advantage of the 45 second safe mode window (before shutdown), I was *not* able to copy off my log files (in /log/var) to a thumb drive because the computer would not mount the USB device.
When I peeked at the system's log file, I caught the tail end of "signature validation failed" for a bunch of hardware - from video to audio. I can only peek because the computer will shutdown before I have an opportunity to study anything in detail. The failed verifications may or may not be related to the shutdown - signature verfication might be disabled in safe mode; I simply don't know.
It seems the world's most advanced operating system [tm] is performing the world's most epic failure. Any ideas to get this brick working again would be greatly appreciated.

    Here's what I've found:
    (1) I cannot run Disk Utility because I don't have my install disk handy
    (2) I cannot run Repair Permissions because Apple does not make a separate ISO available to fix their mistakes
    (3) There does not appear to be a wat to back out updates (ie, no Add/Remove Programs)
I was able to boot into safe mode and perform:
        > sudo bash
        $ chmod -R root /
Amazingly, the command ran to completion. Unfortunately, it did not fix the problem. As soon as some spare cycles were available (interesting indeed!), the machine shutdown.
+1 to Apple engineers for creating a broken patch
+1 to Apple quality assurance for letting the junk out the door
+1 to Apple, for not offering an ISO to fix a broken installation
+1 to Steve, who has managed to keep his anti-trust lock on the hardware and broken software
    Great job, Apple

  • Security Update 2011-003 (Snow Leopard ONLY - Really, Really?!?!?!)

What anyone who doesn't have Snow Leopard isn't at risk of getting tagged by dreaded "Mac Defender" Trojan Horse???
Come Apple Snow Leopard isn't the only OS that is at risk, you really should make this avaible to ALL Mac users, not just those who have purchased and installed Snow Leopard.

It would apparently have been a much bigger undertaking  to provide similar functionality for earlier systems. You'd probably have to start from scratch, whereas for Snow Leopard it's a small update to a pre-existing feature. This isn't to say, though, that Apple shouldn't have provided something for earlier systems anyway.
    From
    About Security Update 2011-003:
Description: The OSX.MacDefender.A definition has been added to the malware check within File Quarantine.
The "File Quarantine" check for "potentially unsafe files" began with OS X v10.5, but the addition of a specific  "malware check" feature using a list of known malware was new in Snow Leopard.
    From
About file quarantine in Mac OS X v10.5 and v10.6:
    Snow Leopard checks for malware
Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard builds upon the existing unsafe file type check by also checking for known instances of "malware", or malicious software. When you open a quarantined file, the file quarantine feature will check to see if it may include known malware.

  • Security update 2011-003 cannot install

I've tried everything on multiple computer to install the Security update 2011-003. At first, it downloads, but it stalls during installation. Then I downloaded the install direct from Apple. It installed, but stalled saying it had 1 minute until completion. That lasted over an hour. I ran disk utility, then the direct install again and the same thing happened: installed until 1 minute until completion and stalls.
Anybody else with the problem and solutions?

Exactly which version of Mac OS are you on? 10.6.?
And, which model Mac do you have?
The security update is for OS 10.6.7 only. Not sure if the new 2011 iMacs need the update or not.

    Hi G,
If you're not using Software Update (in the Apple menu), use that.
If you are using SU and getting that message, try going to http://support.apple.com/downloads/ and downloading it, then install it.

    Is a MacBook Pro 13''  mid 2009  OS X Lion (10.7.1)

You may be able to repair this with 10.4.8 PPC Combo Update
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

is there a way to install this update?

    Hello
More information would be useful, for example which Mac OS are you running.
On the left menu item  About this Mac provides useful information.
Also did you use Software Update to determine the update?
Using Software Update can ensure you download and install the correct package for your particular Mac and OS version.

  • After Security Update, NFS automount hangs login over LDAP

We currently have a laptop lab in the process of being set up. We have 45 MacBook Pro systems with Snow Leopard 10.6.4 installed. We had set up LDAP authentication for users to log in to our directory server and it worked great over both wired and wireless (WPA2). After installing security update 2010-005, systems hang upon logging in over wireless. We believe the problem is with an NFS automount we set up, because removing the automount allows users to log in successfully over wireless. The NFS is crucial so that users can save data to the server, however, so this is not a solution. Are there any configuration tweaks to undo whats been blocked by the security update?

After installing update 2010-005, I am having issues with my system hanging during startup (stays indefinitely on the grey 'apple' screen, with a spinning icon, and no status or message stating what it is trying to do).
I am able to restart, hold SHIFT, and boot into safe mode, with limited functionality, but have not been able to resolve the issue.
How did you determine that it was hanging on wireless login? (I have not found a log file that states what the system is doing during startup, or why its hanging)
I have searched for issues like this, and most posts recommend removing entries from /Library/Caches and other similar items, but I'm concerned that I might be starting out with a small problem, and then cause a much bigger problem by removing system entries without really knowing what's broken in the first place.
Is there a debug screen during startup, that would tell me what steps its taking? (or a log file?)
I've looked through all of the entries available to the console log review app (apps/utilities/console.app), and was hoping that 'system.log' would tell me what's going on, but so far I'm not seeing anything useful. (there are errors in there, and it looked like there was a crash around the same time as the update was happening, but I'm not seeing any entry during startup that shows what its trying to do, and reveals that its just stuck on that task)
I've run some of the tasks in the 'Snow Leopard cache cleaner' and onyx utilities, but that hasn't fixed my login problem.
Any info you have on further diagnosis, rolling back the update, or anything I should try next, would be greatly appreciated!

  • Security update 2011 002 does not appear for Mac Mini

    Hi,
the latest security update will not appear on my Mac Mini. Does anybody know this issue?
    Thanks

    Hi Oliver,
Try to reset the local cache of the softwareupdateservice by going to:
    /Users/yourUserName/Library/Caches/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate/
Delete the contents of that folder and check softwareupdate again.
Perhaps that cache.db has become corrupted.
    Goodluck!

  • After security update 2011-005, iMac fails to shutdown

    Hi All,
I just upgraded my work computer running OS X 10.6.8 to latest security patch (2011-005), and after that my iMac can't shutdown anymore.
The process that is hanging is Apache Tomcat 6. Exactly org.apache.catalina.stratup.Bootstrap
We looked into System diagnostics and there is nothing there!
It looks to me that it has to do with permissions and dependencies, but I have no clue where to look!
    PLEASE HELP!!!
    Many thanks,
