Security Update - anything new

I have read the links about the recent security update. Unfortunately I started reading AFTER having problems. My husband did the update the day it came out. Now our computer won't get past the gray screen with the apple and spinning wheel. I have tried repairing permissions and repairing the disk but nothing has helped. It won't start up in safe mode or single user - nothing works other than starting up from a disk. We bought the computer used so we don't have the system software disks. Is reinstalling the system software the only way to fix this problem? This is the only MAC we have right now. I have had a Mac since 1987 - love them and this is the first big issue. We have gotten rid of our older machines so we don't have anything to fall back on.
Any suggestions are much appreciated.
Thank you

I have tried repairing permissions and repairing the disk....
Always do this before installing an update, not after. After is too late.
If you cannot start up in safe mode or single-user mode and you don't have any installer discs for the computer, then you are basically SOL.
You will need installer discs both to fix any problems that are fixable and to reinstall the operating system. Without them there's nothing you can do. You can purchase older versions of OS X at places such as eBay or FastMac.com. Be quite careful about what you purchase. Only purchase retail versions of the installers. OEM discs (gray labels) are machine specific and will not likely work on your computer. Beware of vendors selling so-called universal installers. You can install any version of OS X on an eMac if it's a 1 GHz model. If you have an 800 GHz or lower speed model then Tiger is the latest installable version. You must of course have sufficient installed RAM for whatever version you install - 256 MBs for Tiger, 512 MBs for Leopard, 128 MBs for any version earlier than Tiger.

I'm still not clear why Apple only issued security updates for 10.6 and later. I assume they think we should all update our operating systems or maybe they are just focusing on the majority of users?
Apple has had a long standing policy of only supporting the current and previous operating system releases.  Whether they decide to make an exception for even older releases is anyone's guess.
You can send them feedback to express your opinion.
Or does the new Trojan not affect older OS? I'd like to know , if anyone has information.
As far as is known, it does affect older unsupported releases.  Disabling Java in your web browser is the current preventive approach (and that is a community derived approach)

  • New Security update ipod touch 4th gen

I was down loading a few new apps/games for my 32gb 4th gen ipod touch using the ipod it's self  last nite 18-9-2011, after they where down loaded i connected my ipod to my computers itunes i went in the back up stage copying the app's/games to my itunes library, after this was done an message poped up on both my computer and ipod touch saying new Security update ipod touch 4th gen it satrting to download and i could not cancel it, now i know my ipod has the 16 digt passcode set up on it so now everytime i link my ipod to any of my auhorised computer it say itunes can not connect to my ipod as its passcoded which i think is an good thing because if i lose it anybody finding it if i lose it can't restore it. but is there any way of my computer been able to know its pass code with out haveing to enter it in to the ipod its self all the time

I looked at the descriptions for the last three update and none said they did anything about entering the passcode.  The Apple documentation says you should only have to enterthe passcode the first time you connect to the computer.  Specifically:
If you protect your iPhone or iPod touch with a passcode, you will be prompted to enter the passcode when you connect to iTunes. Once you successfully enter the passcode, iTunes will recognize that device as authorized and you will not need your passcode to back up or sync.

  • Kernel Panics with new security update

Anyone else having this problem? Downloaded the new security update, installed, restarted (took a very long time to restart) the computer rebooted itself and then began to kernel panic every time I booted it. Works fine if I boot into windows so seems to be something the new software update broke. Anyone else having similar issues?

Well I am having a weird problem. This is my first post so I am not sure if I need to make a new post, but here goes.
I installed the Security Update 2007-005 (PowerPC) on May 31 on my MacBook Pro. I can't be certain but I think since I installed it I have a spinning ball and can't do much of anything. Like something is bogging it down. It will eventually stop but will start again the minute I do anything... something is just not right. I have tried all troubleshooting techniques but found it is not possible to even try them.
Safe Boot... It automatically decides to shut down before it gets to the safe boot screen.
Disk Utility... Restarting off the disk, yes, but when I run the program I get "could not unmount disk"
Trying to run fsck -y, in single user mode (command s)... I get "Volume is journaled. No checking performed. Use the -f option to force checking.
I have no idea what to do next. I guess I will try to reinstall my system off my disks. Does anyone have any ideas... please help this is taking up so much time.

  • New Permissions messages after Security Update/more curious than concerned

I just installed the latest security update 2010-001. I repaired permissions afterward and encountered messages I've not seen before. I got "Permissions Repair complete."
2010-01-24 10:14:37 -0500: ACL found but not expected on "Applications/Utilities".
2010-01-24 10:14:37 -0500: ACL found but not expected on "Applications".
2010-01-24 10:14:37 -0500: ACL found but not expected on "Library".
I googled around a bit and what I found interesting was the majority of threads relating to this date back to 2008 after the release of 10.5.2. The consensus then seemed to be these messages were completely harmless. I did find one very recent topic though, that reported these messages appearing just after the current security update. I'm wondering if anyone else has now encountered these after updating?
    http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg56086.html
Not that I understand ACLs very well, but I'd like to know what might the consequences or implications be of these Permissions having been changed--if this is what has happened--by the update. (Or, probably less likely, is DU after updating, now set to find things that were always there?)
I don't think I've done anything else that would account for these. (I didn't repair Permissions just before running the update, so I can't say conclusively they weren't there before--although I have done Permissions fairly recently. Why might these be appearing now? Thanks.

these messages are harmless and should be ignored. there is nothing new about that.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306925
the ACLs present on those folders should be there. those repair permissions messages are just false positives due to errors in permissions database. just about every update introduces more such errors.
if you want to see the actual ACLs on those folders run this in terminal
    ls -lade /Applications /Applications/Utilities /Library
all of these folders should have "everyone deny delete" ACLs to prevent accidental deletion.
    VK's Computer>ls -lade /Applications /Applications/Utilities /Library
    drwxrwxr-x+ 114 root admin 3876 21 Jan 22:43 /Applications
    0: group:everyone deny delete

  • Security updates for anything earlier than ios4

    straight question.
have apple stopped doing security updates for anything earlier than iOS4.
my ios4 3g takes 4 seconds to load sms , thinking of downgrading but worried about security.
    thanks !

Each OS update contains latest security updates. They never add them to old OSes as the update to the new OS is the security update as well. They don't do patches to just old OSes.

  • Is Apple going to release a security update for Snow Leopard to patch the new 'bash' bug?

What are the chances we will see Apple release a security update to patch this bash bug vulnerability? I really love snow leopard and don't want to update. At the same time, I don't want my computer to be vulnerable! Apple is still selling snow leopard, so are they still maintaining it?

    STWriter wrote:
OSx 10.6.8 IS INFECTED TOO -- news says ALL for about 25 YEARS !
I posted a site link -- check the thread.
10.6 does have the bash bug (I confirmed that a few replies back in this thread, and I mentioned the 25 years in another reply to this thread). But that is NOT an infection. Bash did not catch it. The bug was not put there on purpose. And the bug itself does not actively do anything. It is a flaw that can allow a web server using server side scripts written in the bash shell scripting language, or a server side script that invokes bash. Or a user that allows anonymous remote ssh logins. Or has enabled the CUPS web management interface.
All of which was said before in this thread. Along with why it is most likely not a problem for the typical Mac consumer.
This is a serious problem for many web servers.  And there are instructions for patching bash (see above).
The typical Mac user does not do the things that put them at risk. And if they know how to set their Mac up to put themselves at risk, they are knowledgable enough to follow the patching instructions.

  • New Security Update - Airport no longer works. Help ?

    Hey all
this morning I ran various software updates: itunes, safari and the new security update. From that moment onwards, I cannot access the internet using my MacBook (about a year old, running Mac OS X 10.4.11). I normally use Firefox to access the net, but neither that nor Safari work now.
I know my internet works as I can access it wirelessly using my work laptop and my desktop.
But when I try to access my broadband using my macbook:
    a) the "waves" on the airport all remain light-shaded
    b) I receive an error message saying " There was an error joining the Airport network 'Zyxel' " (the router is zyxel).
If anyone has any thoughts on how to reset the connnection back to how it was, I'd be EXTREMELY grateful.
    thanks

Having the same problem, but only with my Mac. PC and iPhone continue to work fine. Must be security update related. Is there a way to uninstall the security update?

  • New Security Update and now apple based programs will not run

I recently downloaded and installed the new security update. I also attempted to download the safari 3.1 update, but an error occurred during download. After restart, iTunes, Mail, Safari, Installer and iMovie will not start (Quicktime will start). The applications from bar and from applications folder will not launch. All third party apps seem to work (I used Explorer 5.2-which I found hidden in one of my folders- to download firefox which I am using now)
    I have tried:
-Reinstalling most recent Leopard Update (10.4.11), which fails to even start because Installer crashes
    -Deleting preference files
    -Using disk utility
-Booting from safe mode and single user mode
-Running repair permissions from prompt screen (command-s)

I am having this issue only after I installed the latest Security update. Now I am unable to install the iMovie update, or log into the app store.

    As I posted else where…
Hey everyone with Apple problems right now…
Apple is having server problems affecting App Store, iTunes, iCloud, etc…
Check the Apple Service Status(***) page… http://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/
Wait for all systems green. This is always a good idea if you have problems with anything Apple.
Here is what Apple message says…
Multiple Store Services - All users are affected
Customers may be unable to make purchases from the App Store, iTunes Store, iBooks Store, or Mac App Store.
iCloud Mail - All users were affected
Users may have been unable to access iCloud mail.
iCloud Account & Sign In - All users were affected
Users may have been unable to sign in.
This means no downloads, updates, iCloud and other issues. You may get pop-up windows asking you for password for iCloud, etc…
Wait, try again after all go to go on *** page.
    Hope this helps, Greg

I Don't know if I can turn it of or do I just leave it and take it to service?
    I'd appreciate some advice!

Same thing happened here ~ tech guy at a local authorized Apple repair store said it had something to do with improper backup from which the restore would be made. Still have a phone that asks to be connected to Itunes but won't do anything else . . . frustrated.

  • My Mac 10.7.5 won't shut down after new software (security update 2013-003) installation-- hangs at grey screen with "software update" at top.  It also intermittently goes to sleep without my asking.  What to do?

My Mac 10.7.5 won't shut down after a new software installation (Security Update 2013-003).  It just hangs at a grey screen with "Software Update" at the top.  I have to force quit, then restart-- but the new software hasn't installed.
My Mac also intermittently goes into Sleep mode, repeatedly, unprompted by me.  I suspect a connection between these two problems.
I have tried deleting the /Library/Updates folder.  It hasn't helped.  The update still won't install, and my Mac won't shut down without my forcing the quit.
    Help please!

Hi, I've just come accross the same problem... did you manage to get a resolution??
    Cheers, Chris.

  • New Os 10.5 Security update today....but didnt fix my SMB/NAS issue!

Since I am one out of many here in this forum that cnnot connect his NAS harddrive to Leopard, i was looking forward to receive an update from Apple.
Now today there is an update available, which also states it fixes Samba issues....but unfortunately no change on my NAS harddrive. still can connect, see the main folder, but cant drill down and see the files or access files. all works fine on windows (!!) and if i connect the NAS to the Mac straight away.
anybody else still has issues after today's software update?
    Please let me know,
    Thx, Markus

As soon as I read your post, I went checking for software updates and voila, there was the Security Update.
I downloaded and installed it, but no good news. Finder still only shows the topmost shared folders inside the NAS drive, but it doesn't let me browse into them.
I really think there is something wrong with the kernel or with the smbfs support. Are we supposed to get stuck with this problem until Apple finally releases Darwin 9.1? How long will it take?
