Security update Aug 1, problems

I downloaded the security update yesterday, Aug 1,2008 on my G4 tower and now only get to the gray screen with the apple. Help.

You only say you downloaded it. Then what did you do? What had you done before downloading it?
repaired permissions? Verified your hard disk? Rebooted and repaired permissions again?
Did you download the correct version?
How did you install it: via Software Update or manually?

Any security update slow-down problem occuring ???

hi all,
My macbk has slowed to a crawl on the net. connecting from one site to another takes up to 20 seconds. I've done permissions / onyx/ scripts/ reset safari & camino /cleared browser caches and each time it speeds up a bit but within a few minutes online it's slow again. hangs up initially at "looking for..." in the bottom bar and shows highlighted bar hung right before "www". OR at the "go to" / "contacting" stage at the same WWW
The only thing I can think that I did at about the time it began slowing down was , using software update (which I rarely use- normally download directly from the apple site, but got momentarily lazy!).
My Techtool pro is 4.2.1 and won't run on my intel apparently - or so it says in the dialogue box and when I try to download and install the incremental update it says it can't find where to install. so I am stuck with out it at the moment.
If it weren't so rare I would think I had a WORM. but that IS rare on a mac I think.
so thinking about possible linked problems with that security update.
anyone heard of any problems ?
I do have applecare, so if all else fails I can call them I guess

2009-002 security update start up problems

I have to "coax" my tiger 10.4.11 Macbook pro into starting and I have a recurring permissions error after installing the newest security update. I repair them and it will still stall after entering the login password at that screen. Here are the errors:
Determining correct file permissions.
Permissions differ on ./System/Library/User Template, should be drwx------ , they are drwxr-xr-x
Permissions verification complete
Permissions differ on ./usr/standalone/i386/boot.efi, should be -r--r--r-- , they are -r-xr-xr-x
It will boot into safe mode every time, but its like pulling teeth and takes many hard powerdowns to get it to boot normally. Does anyone know enough about the boot process to help me out? Thanks!

No, If you use Disk Repair it is actually more robust then fsck in Tiger.
The first time this happened I took it to the genius bar and they did an archive and install, but they installed the same security update (2009-002) again, so I'm again having the same bootup issue.
I don't think the security update is the issue....I run 10.4.11 on my G4 , with all updates installed, and have no issues. More likely, there is something weird in your system that the update is bringing forth, or you just have a startup login issue.
+Archive and Installs+ can leave you with problems from the previous install.
Do you have a backup? If not, are there things on the drive that you can't afford to lose?
I'm thinking I just need to save up 150 bucks and bite the Leopard bullet...
Do you really need Leopard? If not the same can be accomplished with an +Erase and+ Install of Tiger. But it will wipe out everything on the drive, hence the backup question. Or you could get a better utility to help. What exactly happens when you try to bootup?

After running Office 2011 for 1 year with no problem all programmes stopped working today. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and now can not even put in registration key. Is it Security Update 2015-003 problem?

After running Offcie 2011 for 12 months with no problem, today I can not open any of the programs.
Have followed some advice forums but no resolution.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled and now get the same error when trying to open one of the programs and trying to add activation key.
Updated with Security Update 2015-003 yesterday is this causing the problem?

Me too. It has been 3 days since I have no access to iCloud mail. No matter I check it on iCloud.com, Mac, iPhone or iPad, the mail app says I have incorrect password. Specifially, when I check email on my Mac, the message below appears and prompt me to type in the password. I am sure that I've entered the correct password already.
The iCloud IMAP server “p99-imap.mail.me.com” rejected the password for user “my user name”
Enter your password again or cancel.
Staying away from email for a day is OK, but definietly not for 3 or 4 days. Someone, please tell me what to do. If it has to do with the servers, Apple, PLEASE FIX IT ASAP!!

Security Update 2012-004 problems?

Do I need to worry about this update? Typically they come with unforeseen issues.
(I'm still using snow leopard since I have quite a few older apps that lion won't run).
Any information about possible problems and risks to my 2 snow leopard macs:
-a mini - early 2009 and a macbook pro mid 2010-
from this update will be appreciated.

I've updated and there seems to be no problems, and there hasn't been any issue on 10.6.8 around here so far, can't say for 10.7 or 10.8 users.
So I would say your safe to go.
You know, if you clone your boot drive, you never have to fear a bad update or malware, as you can boot from the clone (on a extenral drive or another partition) and simply reverse clone. (in the case of malware, zero erase booted from the 10.6 disk first, then hook up the clone.)
This is especially useful for 10.6, now that it's at the tail end of Apple's attention span and could one day not get security updates.
However right now over 50% of users are still the the great Snow Leopard, so Apple is maintinaing three OS X versions currently, which is new ground for them.
I would use Firefox instead of Safari 5.7.1 though, since Safari 6 fixed a lot of security issues.

Hi, I'm running 10.6.8 with the usual mac applications and since April I haven't been able to install the security update 2012-004 any ideas

What happens when you try? If you're doing this from Software Update, what about getting the standalone?

Security update fixes ACL problems, almost

So far when running disk permissions, I've had one iMac C2D have no problems reported and the other iMac C2D only have ACL issues on /Library

Open the Terminal application and type:
man chmod
Look under the heading ACL MANIPULATION OPTIONS. The argument that you would use is:
"everyone deny delete"
If you can't understand the manual then leave your handy work alone. It's not a large security breach. chmod, chown, and chflags should only be used when you understand what you are doing.

Problem Encountered with Latest (as of 8/2/08) Security Update

I just updated the latest security update both on my powerbook and Mac Pro. My Mac Pro went into an infinite loop upon restart. Powerbook did OK. Did anyone encounter the same problem. I had to power down my Mac Pro and restart again and it went well the second time.

Our household has three Macs, a Mac Pro G5, an old Mac Mini and a Macbook Pro G4, all running Leopard. Two out of the three machines would not work after taking Security Update 2008-005.
The Pro and the Mini would not restart and had to be turned off manually. When switching back on, the Mini kept restarting itself. The Pro would get as far as a flickering blue screen with a spinning daisy chain. Same update, two different problems. Neither could be started in safe mode or from an external hard drive.
The Pro's hard drive was restored using the Leopard install disk and a time machine backup, the Mini had a complete reinstall. They now work perfectly.
I am absolutely positive that the latest security update was the problem.

Mac Mini won't boot after applying 2009-001 Security Update

I'm stuck at the gray startup screen with the Apple logo and the "gear wheel" progress indicator. Still stuck there after 60 minutes of "letting it brood."
How to I fix this?

The easiest way to solve the problem is to restore the drive from the backup you made just before installing any update or software on your computer, then do the installation again following the suggestions at the end of this post. Failing that...
First, try the routine repair disk and repair permissions with Disk Utility on your installer disc. Boot from the installer disk, select language if applicable, choose utilities, run Disk Utility and verify (and repair if necessary) the drive. You can verify a drive from DU on your main drive while booted but I have found this can result in incorrect reporting of errors. To repair your drive you have to run it from a drive other than the boot drive anyway.
Next, boot from your drive in [Safe Mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393] and repair permissions. You can repair permissions while booted from the installer disc but this uses the permissions configuration on the installer disc which may be out of date if you have run any updates on your computer. Booting your computer to Safe Mode restricts the number of things running on your computer while permissions are being run and done a bit of spring cleaning at the same time.

Installed Security update 2008-008 ; programs won't work

Hello,
I installed the latest security update, 2008-008, last night on my Macbook Pro version 10.4.11. Now, the majority of programs on my machine quit unexpectedly right when I try and start them up.
iTunes, iCal, VLC media player, Photoshop, Installer, internet connect, activity monitor, directory access... the list goes on.
How do I fix this?

Finally, you could try re-applying the combo updater for 10.4.11, then re-apply the security update carefully. Since it seems to be applications (but not just Apple ones) that are having problems it may be some component used in all of these is broken.

Security Update 2007 02 keep coming back in Software Update

Hi there,
when I install the Security Update 2007 02 and restart the computer, this update should be gone from Software Update but everytime I run Software Update it tells me again to do the Security Update. This problem occurs only with my G5.

Ical events duplicated a zillion times since security update. Isync hangs

I switched to Entourage for mail because there were too many bugs in imail. However i prefer using ical for my appointments etc. so I sync them all. When I first got my Sony Ericsson K800i, I had to purchase a 3rd party app in order to use it with iSync. It worked perfectly. Somewhere along the line isync included the K800i in its compatible devices. That is where all the trouble started . . .
Certain, seemingly random, appointments in my ical/entourage calenders would get duplicated hundreds of times. My phone couldn't synchronise because it said its calender was full. This was entirely because of the erroneously duplicated events. I experimented with a bunch of settings to no avail. Several security updates later, the problem seemed to be sorted. But after the last update it is worse than ever. When I open isync, it just says "refreshing contact groups and calendar information" forever. If I click on "sync" it just hangs. If I try and click on one of the culprit days on my calender (like january 25th which I know has a multitude of duplicated items), ical just hangs with the beachball of doom. So I can't even go in there and manually delete the duplicated items (which took me ages last time).
Help! I depend on having my appointments and stuff on my phone. Not being able to synchronise is driving me crazy!!

http://www.versiontracker.com or just google for "iCal duplicate events" you can find software to remove the duplicates.

Security Update 2008-007 and RDC 2.0.0

After I installed Security Update 2008-007 today, I have been unable to run MS Remote Desktop Connection for Mac 2.0.0 to a Windows XP computer on my network. I get the message that I was disconnected from the Windows computer. Before installing the update, I had no such difficulty. The Windows computer itself is running and has network connectivity otherwise (Internet, etc.), so the problem does not appear to be at the Windows end of the connection. No settings have been changed on either computer in the interim. I have repaired permissions and rebooted, but that did not help. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have had the same issue, but it had nothing to do with the Security Update. My problem was the the Remote Connection failed to terminate the last time I used it. So each time I would try to login from then on, it immediately rejected the login and disconnected me. I ended up having to wait about 5 minutes for it to clear itself. I have also had to reboot the PC to clear up the connection. May not be the answer you are looking for, but might be something to think on.

Today's Security Update 2012-001 is POISON to PowerPC/Rosetta apps on Snow leopard!

First time I've ever had a routine Security Update cause me problems with OS-X, ever.
Today's Security Update 2012-001 is absolutely crashing my PowerPC/Rosetta apps on Snow Leopard .
Every time to try to OPEN... SAVE or Save as ...PRINT , you will get an instant hard crash.
I still use AppleWorks 6 for all my business correspondence , and have quite a few other PPC apps.
This security update is poison.
Other forums, such as Macintouch , are reporting this. it seems to be affecting almost everyone , regardless of hardware system.
It appears enything and everything PPC will crash , even Apple's own older PPC/Rosetta apps .
SU 2012-001 for Snow Leopard obviously was not tested well, if at all.
Apple MUST fix this ASAP, no matter how much they want to divorce Rosetta and PPC technology for the OS. There is no excuse for dispatching a system software update that has such damaging issues.
I have no need for Lion 10.7 whatsoever , but I do need my Rosetta apps every day... and Apple just crashed them.

2008 iMac Core2Duo , SL 10.6.8

Backup files off the computer (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.
If you have TM, or a option key bootable clone use that to erase and restore from.
If not, c boot off the 10.6 disk, use Disk Utility to >Repair Disk and Permissions, (do not format or erase!!) and simply re--install 10.6
Note: If Disk Repair gives a error that is not repaired, then you have to consider erasing the drive (with Zeros) and try reinstalling 10.6 fresh or replacing the drive.
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8, it should not include the security update at this time (second pass it might show) because it was just released and they might need to pull it. (they need to pull it)
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that installed kext files into OS X, you'll know, they won't work.
If you get gray screen, hold the shift key and update your installed software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

OS X 10.6 security updates make rails appear to be uninstalled

Why is it that each time I install a system OS 10.6 security update it no longer sees that rails is installed on the system even though I can execute "gem list" and see rails is installed?

The error indicates installing rails. But the last time an OS X security update caused this problem when I did that, it reinstalled/updated most of my gems and I didn't want that. To solve my problem I just tried a re-install of the rails gem only using this:
sudo gem install rails --version=3.1.1
since 3.1.1 was the version I had installed. This seems to have just re-installed that item itself and not any other gems. And a gem list command seems to show everything else is still there. Running the web app I was developing appears to indicate all the gems are functioning properly.
Hope this helps someone else.
