Security Update automatically installed?

My "Update" reminder on my Mac (OS 10.9.5) just stated that a Security Update had been installed on my computer.  I did not do this manually.
I then went to the Apple pull-down for Software Update.  It said that the last security update was installed on November 28, 2014, which is consistent with the log that I keep concerning my computer.
What is going on?  Should I be worried?  (I changed my Apple ID password shortly before this message appeared).

If the Security update is installed, you may find it under installations,
Click  in the menu bar.

    Hi
    Im using Avira antivirus software.
This software is for free and great
I think you should remove the Mcaffe from the system.
Then install the Avira antivirus software and update it to latest date
Then perform an full system scan which should help to remove the viruses, Trojans and other garbage from the system.

  • "a new security update was installed on your Mac"

I was using my Macbook Pro this morning, and the update bar came up on the right top screen, so I said "remind me tomorrow".
Less than a minute later, a box popped up in the same place which says "Security Update Installed A new security update was installed on your Mac"
I am submitting the question because I haven't had this message before, nor did I authorize an update this morning.
Is this malware or a new service in OS X Yosemite 10.10.1?
Also, when I tried logging into the apple forums using my keycode and password, it said my account is locked for security reasons.  I logged in the old fashioned way, typing my information and got in.
    Thank you!

It is possible that  the recent security update was installed automatically.
You can verify it. If the info is as shown below, there is nothing to worry.
Click  in the menu bar.

  • HT4589 should I install each update in successive order? Or will installing the 10.7 update automatically install every previous update?  I have FCPX 10.0.0 currently. Dumb question?

should I install each update in successive order? Or will installing the 10.7 update automatically install every previous update?  I have FCPX 10.0.0 currently. Dumb question?

Installing 10.0.7 negates the need to install previous updates. Just install it (it will upgrade your projects to a newer format as well, from memory).
Thankfully, the days of doing it the way you were thinking are well behind us.

  • Are all security updates automatic or can I set preferences?

I was out for a couple of hours. When I came back to my Macbook I had a notification that a security update had been installed.
    1) Is there any record anywhere of what update was installed?
    2) Do I have any choice or can I set preferences about when and if downloads/updates happen and are installed?
I know there is a list here: Apple security updates - Apple Support
but I want to know if there is place on my machine where i can see the updates and compare  . . just to see if, for example the December 22 update is installed.
I can also see other updates in the app store but I don't see any security updates and the updates that are listed there don't have any dates attached.
    Thanks very much,
    Michael

Thanks, I did have that setting checked for security updates but I guess it hasn't happened automatically, if ever. In fact, this article seems to be saying this was the first automatic one ever?

So, is there a place that I can see what security updates have been installed?
I can see all the app updates in the app store but not security "patches."
    Thanks again,

  • How can I tell which Apple Security Updates are installed?

While troubleshooting a printer issue, I installed some 'Extra' printer profiles from my OS 10.6 Install DVD. After which, I got a dialog box from the Installer saying that I may have replaced some newer items with older ones, and it suggested I run the latest OS "Combo" installer. Which I did, even tho Software Update said I was up-to-date.
But apparently, when I ran the "Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1" -- it downgraded some of my Apple software to older versions. For example, I know for sure Safari was at 5.1.2 before I ran the Combo, and it's now at 5.0.5. Yet Software Update is not telling me about v.5.1.2, which it shows as already being installed (at a date prior to me running the Combo updater).
    So my question is:
What other software might have been downgraded by the 10.6.8 Combo v1.1 -- and if Software Update thinks I running the current versions, how am I going to find out for sure?
Obviously, I can check version numbers of my installed Apple software like iTunes and Aperture against the latest updates available at Apple Downloads, but I don't know how to check on background files like Security Updates, Java, etc.
I am particularly concerned that I am running the latest Security Updates.
    Thanking you in advance,
    - gw

"... There you will be able to see if a more recent version of Safari, etc. was replaced with an older version."
Not exactly. That screen shows my most recent Safari update was 5.1.2 on 12/16/11 -- then it shows the Mac OS X Update Combined was installed on 1/2/12. That's when my Safari got downgraded to 5.0.5, but that detail is missing from the Installed Updates preference pane.
It looks like once an update gets installed, Software Update remembers that -- but does not take the newer update off the list if an older version replaces it???
So, even though I see Security Update 2011-006 was installed on 10/21/11, I'm not sure if the OS Combo Update replaced any security items with older bits. Is there anything specific to security updates that I might be able to check?

  • Security update 003 installed, Software Update now wants 002!

I saw that Apple Security Update 2011-003 was available so I followed the link, downloaded it and installed it. Now Software Update alerts me that it wants to install yet another Security Update (number 002). What is going on here? Should I allow the download and installation?

Security updates generally are not cumulative, so 2011-003 probably does not include any fixes from earlier updates. If Software Update is listing another update, I'd suggest you go ahead and let it install.
    Regards.

  • Which security updates to install?

I'm going to upgrade a friend's iBook from 10.3.3 to 10.3.9 and I need to know which security updates I need to install after installing the combo 10.3.9 system upgrade. Do I install only security updates released after 10.3.9 or do I need to install all the security updates to Panther? Thanks.

My suggestion is go to the Apple and then choose Software Update, and choose in order of there release, and Install.

  • Why does the latest flash update automatically install Mcafee?

Just wondering why I can't opt out of installing unwanted software when updating flash player?
    For reference:
    - I turned on my computer and was faced with a regular looking flash player box that stated an update was available.
    - I clicked the "update" button and was taken to the following page: https://get3.adobe.com/flashplayer/download/?installer=Flash_Player_13_for_Other_Browsers& os=Windows%207&browser_type=Gecko&browser_dist=Firefox&a=McAfee_Security_Scan_Plus_FireFox _Browser&dualoffer=false&type=au&browser_vers=28 (yes it mentions Mcafee in the address, but only the address. No warning whatsoever on the actual webpage. I wasn't aware that it would automatically install Mcafee without asking).
    - I saved the update, then ran it (there were no checkboxes at all to opt out of Mcafee, it just installed it).
Not particularly happy at having unwanted software installed with no real warning, and no opt out available.

That one goes back three updates ago, and http://forums.adobe.com/message/4315988  goes back two years...
This has been an ongoing thing. There is an updater that blindly installs McAfee and another that installs Google Chrome and Toolbar. People have been complaining about it for years, and it doesn't change, and it won't change.
I'm not being condescending, and I'm not trying to lecture you on this. I'm just stating the facts. If there had been any intent on anyone's part to do something about it, posts like this wouldn't pop up here every month and a half, like clockwork.
It's the number one reason we post the FULL installer links. Because they have NOTHING IN THEM but the Flash Player plug-in.

  • Security update 2008-007: not installing

I used 'software update' from the apple menu to download this security update of 31 MB yesterday.
It got downloaded and while installing (during shut down), there was an error message saying i need to contact the manufacturer.
Also in the window that asks to restart now or later - the enter/return button is not working for selection and it is working only while using the track pad.
next time when i use the software update, it does not start downloading (looks like the previous downloaded file is still in the buffer) and it straight goes to window asking for restart now or later.
    and the same problem continues.
should i have change some setting?
also i tried to download the security update 2008-007 for client INTEL from apple downloads site (around 139 MB). this too indicated an error after downloading.
the last security update had changed the keyboard backlight set to off. i did not notice it initially.
later i noticed and wondered if the keyboard is damaged. after going thro the discussion forums, i went to the preferences and found the keyboard backlight not selected. after selecting it, it was okay.
    any soultions please?

Whoa - slow down there. That update is for Tiger. DO NOT attempt to use it with Leopard. You have to read the large print:
    System Requirements
    Mac OS X 10.4.11 Tiger

If you are remiss in applying the wrong updates, anything can happen and usually does.
Be very careful when doing things manually.
First, boot into Safe mode and at login screen select restart and let system reboot normally.
Down the CORRECT security update and install it.
I believe this is the one for you:

  • Silent Security Updates Failing For 11.4 users

The process of installing Flash security updates silently seems be broken because Adobe continues to change version numbers so many times.  It appears that 11.4.287 users can only get the latest security updates by moving to the new 11.5.x version and whenever the version number is changed, the update is not silent.  It pops up a splash screen asking the user if they want to update even though the policy was previously set to install updates automatically.  The user may not have either the desire nor the security permissions to install Flash updates.  If they have admin rights, and choose to install the update, then they frequently end up installing piggy-backed software such as Chrome to McAfee that is enabled by default and then need to get help from the help desk to remove it.
The users do not even get prompted of the update until after a reboot that may not come until weeks after the security update is available, so in the meantime, they are surfing the web with the unpatched version of Flash even though their Flash updates settings were set to:  "Allow Adobe to install updates."
This is not a safe process.
Please either allow critical security updates to install silently even if it is a new version number or stop updating the version numbers so frequently.  This is very frustrating since we had this exact same issue only weeks ago going from 11.3 to 11.4.
Why is this still happening?  Can this be fixed?

I guess you are using silent update with your own update server?
We are having the same annoyance. Already posted about it a few days ago: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1098860
I do hope for a response from Adobe.

  • Security Update 2010-005 for Facetime

    Hi,
I have downloaded Face-time Beta to be installed on my iMac OS 10.5.8.
During Installation i get a message that I need to install first "Security Update 2010-005 using software update"
My software update shows no update required. Nevertheless, I have downloaded all 5 security updates and installed them one after the other, with no problems.
Still i get the same message that Security Update 2010-005 needed when I try to install the Facetime.
Can anybody knows a way out of this loop ? or how do I "Inform" the software update that the Security update 2010-005 is already installed ?
    thanks,

Yes, you'd need to buy it - it's available widely for $29 (Apple store or resellers); you can then update to 10.6.4 - use the combo updater available here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048
(updates for an OS are available for free, but you do have to pay for the initial upgrade to another OS).
Edit: And when you're doing the updates to 10.6.4, don't forget to repair permissions after each update.

  • Issue with Safari and / or 2011-02 Security Update???

Updated our iMac and Macbooks to above.  Since that point, Airport Utility (AU) can not find the Airport Extreme (AE) from either Macbook.  The Macbooks can attach to the AE - just that AU can not find it.  However, our iMac AU - hard wired ethernet connection - can find the AE.  I reloaded the AE 7.5.2 firmware - still same problem.  Also having issues with connecting to the TM backup from the MB- seems related to the AE.  Reloaded AE with 7.5.2 - no change.  Never a problem until this latest update.  No other changes have been made.
Has anyone else encountered this problem or have a suggestion on how I might fix it.

Rod - Thanks for the suggestion - I ended up not trying it.
I reverted Airport Extreme (via my AU through the hard-wired iMac) to 7.4.2 from 7.5.2.
Note - 7.5.2 had been working fine until the Safari and 2011-02 Security update were installed.  Seems as if it caused something to go wrong in 7.5.2.
I can now see AE via AU via the wifi Macbooks - and TM is working again from the Macbooks.  The TM disk is actually on the iMac.
    Thanks - Rob
