Security Update Feb 2 2012 Kills save option in Word 04

I downloaded the security update today for snow leopard, and now I can't save my MS Word documents.  When I click the save button, nothing happens.  Has this happened to anyone else?

Backup files off the computer (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.
If you have TM, or a option key bootable clone use that to erase and restore from.
If not, c boot off the 10.6 disk, use Disk Utility to >Repair Disk and Permissions,  (do not format or erase!!) and simply re--install 10.6 (doesn't touch files or most programs, but backup files off the machine regardless)
Note: If Disk Repair gives a error that is not repaired, then you have to consider erasing the drive (with Zeros) and try reinstalling 10.6 fresh or replacing the drive.
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8, it should not include the security update at this time (second pass it might show) because it was just released and they might need to pull it. (they need to pull it)
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that installed kext files into OS X, you'll know, they won't work.
If you get gray screen, hold the shift key and update your installed software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

  • HT5281 Update to Lion 10.7.4 and Security update 02/2012 upped Ruby load to the ceiling

After updating our home Mac mini server to Lion 10.7.4 and Security update 02/2012, with the machine now just sitting idle, no user logged-in, network cable unplugged, Ruby is generating 96% load on the CPU at all times, with processor temperature running near its limit and fans blowing full-blast.
Switching off the Wiki server cut the load back to normal, Ruby process went behind the curtain, and things appear back to normal, but of course this is no cure, it's just a temporary fix-up.
Any other user is experiencing anything similar?
Any possible solution in form of a next update coming soon, for the graphic-shell-only illiterate users like me?

Yesterday I applied the latest Lion Server Update to my Mac Mini Server (not sure about the update's number).
I also experienced the "fans blowing full-blast" symptom for no apparent reason (no heavy apps running - Mac almost idle- and CPU, HDD, Network monitors flatlining). As well as a minor issue on the screen-sharing side: it didn't display the initial grey-background login page, but after I logged in blindly it was fine.
The update did a restart but no power-off, so I thought the issues might occur because the hardware hadn't properly reset (yep, I had to use Windows at work...)
Dunno if that was the cause, but after a shutdown, power-off and restart, the symptoms disappeared. Will see... so far so good.

  • Did Security Update 2006-001 kill SpamAssassin 3.1.0?

Has anyone else seen this? I note from the release notes:
    perl
    CVE-ID: CVE-2005-4217
Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9
Impact: Perl programs may fail to drop privileges
Description: When a perl program running as root attempts to switch to another user ID, the operation may fail without notification to the program. This may cause a program to continue to run with root privileges, assuming they have been dropped. This can cause security issues in third-party tools. This update addresses the issue by preventing such applications from continuing if the operation fails. This issue does not affect Mac OS X v10.4 or later systems. Credit to Jason Self for reporting this issue.
Any advice would be most appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Damon
    PowerMac G4-867   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

The update prevents spamd to run as the default user "nobody". Running it as root seems to be the only workaround.

  • Security Update 2006-001 Killed network preferences

After upgrading with the 2006-001 Security Update, none of my network preferences will set up correctly anymore. DHCP doesn't seem to be doing anything, and when I tell it to use a manual address via the system preferences, it appears that it's not actually doing anything. Mac OS System Preferences will not even detect that I have an ethernet cable plugged in, though if I use ifconfig and route I can get a LITTLE bit of traffic to go out, so I know it's connected and working.
Any one have any ideas on this? Absolutely frustrating because I can no longer work until this is fixed (sitting in an internet cafe trying to figure out what the problem is). I'm running 10.3.9 on a 1.2Ghz 12" Powerbook. I don't remember my Unix days well enough to try to manually set up routes and our DNS settings, nor do I know if the appropriate tools are in Mac OS, but the Apple network preferences are clearly busted.
Is there anyway to uninstall an update?

    12" 1.2 Ghz PB   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I had the same Network & Airport issue after installing Security Update 2006-001 on my wife's iBook G3 running 10.3.9 Trying to access our Airport base station wirelessly would inevitably hang as I selected the Airport network.
I noticed that every time I shut down the computer there was a brief showing of the keychain window asking to allow keychain access...this right as the computer went down (no chance to hit the allow button).
Spent the better part of an entire afternoon trying to fix this problem. Then read all the posts here (amazing how many people have problems with this update). Tried to reset permissions - didn't work. In the end, I rebooted the Airport...went into the Airport Admin Utility with my PowerBook to fiddle around...removed our Airport network from the keychain in my wife's iBook...explored other aspects via the keychain access utility.
None of that seemed to work. I also figure I reset the permissions about half a dozen times (with subsequent reboot). None of that was working either...until after one permissions reset & reboot things came good. I got the keychain window, allowed access, and hey presto...online. So far it's been OK for over 12 hours (including after reboot).
    What exactly worked? I don't know. "It's a mystery".
One thing's for sure...this update is not going on any of my other machines!
Come on Apple...surely you can do better than send us automatic updates that break our computers and sap our time!

  • Security Update 2013-003 kills Photoshop CS6 with video

Since updating 10.6.8 to Security Update 2013-003, Photoshop CS6's video capabilities are hosed.  If I try to export a video to animated GIF, it pinwheels.  If I import a video in the first place, it now takes much longer to do so.  Making layers from video frames now gets stuck at the Progress bar and I'm forced to cancel it and/or force quit Photoshop.
Just a warning to those who work with video and Photoshop, Security Update 2013-003 may ruin your workflow.

If you have not already done so, you should contact Adobe Support and/or post in the Adobe Forums since it's their product for a work-a-round if any.

  • Security Update 2007-600 killed my Mac...

    Hi,
Recently bought my G5, installed Tiger and updated to 10.4.9 without any issues.
This evening I (stupidly?) installed Security Update 2007-006, clicked on 'restart', and have had grief ever since.
My system won't boot. I get the grey apple and spinning gear screen fine...next the 'Starting Mac OS X' with the blue progress bar...then it goes to a blue screen, hangs up for awhile, and suddenly I have a black screen with a Login prompt (Darwin/BSD (localhost) (console)). Is that "verbose" mode? Regardless, I have no clue what to do next.
I have already used the Install disc to repair disc/repair permissions, but i still can't get my system working.
I've even tried booting into safe mode, but for some reason, I can't get safe mode to even work. I've tried dozens of times, and all that it does is attempt a normal startup, and makes its way back to the console screen.
I've reached my wits end, can anyone help me? Thanks.

Yes, all of my 3rd party apps. are there, including iLife, which I installed after I did a clean install of Tiger a week ago.
Also, when I first installed 10.4.6 last week, older versions of Quicktime and iTunes were bundled with it. I immediately updated at the time. After the Archive and Install, the latest versions of iTunes and Quicktime survived the "trip back in time".
The only thing that appears to be different is my monitor settings for some reason...
Now I'm just stuck with a 5 GB file called "Previous Systems". lol

  • Does security update 2006-1 kill ODBC drivers?

I do development work on my personal machine, which requires an ODBC connection to a database on a server. All worked well until the 2006-1 security patch. Now, the drivers won't load.
Do I need to reinstall iODBC over the existing drivers? Is there a patch to the patch?

The update prevents spamd to run as the default user "nobody". Running it as root seems to be the only workaround.

  • Security update takes ages

The recent security update takes ages to download from App Store. Around 10 Kb per minute! All other updates and downloads from App Store work fine.
The one before - OS X NTP Security Update 1.0 was as slow as this one and I'm not sure if the recent one isn't just the same. It's another NTP Update??

  • Cannot use emacs after the recent security update

After the most recent security update (Feb. 2008) for OS X 10.4.11,
I cannot use emacs anymore. The error message from the computer
    is:

I am using Powerbook 12". Anyone can help me to solve this problem?

    Welcome to the Forums Jack!
    First...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Repair permissions and try a Safe Boot, hold shift at startup.
If that doesn't work and you have enough space on the HD, then you can try an Archive and Install feature...

  • Downloaded Security Update and Microsoft Word and iPhoto don't work

I recently downloaded the newest Security Update for my Mac, and now Microsoft Word won't launch, giving me the error message:
The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "2<Microsoft Word><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_CarbonSound>"
and photos won't appear in iPhoto. That is, iPhoto launches, but when I click on a picture to view it, the loading rotating circle appears in the middle and the picture doesn't come up. Can anyone help? Thank you!

I've got the teacher's version of MS Office and it wasn't affected by the security update. You might have to reinstall MS to get the supporting files back.
You might ask over in the Tiger forum. Someone may have first hand experience with that.

Apparently some are reporting that this causes the older PowerPC (PPC) applications that are supported in 10.6 via 'Rosetta' to crash upon attempting to open/save/print using any dialog box, or fail in other similar ways such as simply not printing or quitting, or freezing/hanging/crashing of the application.
I have read of some companies that have indeed submitted proper bug reports to Apple, but that is not a guarantee of a bug-fix being issued.

If you are unsure if you are still using PowerPC apps, if the application is currently running, look under the 'Activity Monitior' (in Applications -> Utilities), or alternatively you could check in the System Profiler, Applications. Check the column "Type".
Here is a fairly simple way you can restore you system and restore you applications functionality again, if you don't have a recent clone or good Time Machine backup that you can restore from. If you do, restore from your backup prior to having installed the Security Update 2012-001.
    Time Machine restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Lion recovery partition (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility. Select the backup prior to your issues, and it will be restored back to the state it was in at that time.
If you can't easily restore from a backup, you can instead do the following:
    - You first start by reinstalling your OS X 10.6.x, this will preserve all your user data, your applications, no worries there.
    - Then install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (links provided below)
    - Make sure you're printers are showing up correctly in your system preferences, if not, re-add the printers
    - Then finally, run the Apple Software Update (by pulling down the Apple Menu), and install any and all remaining updates, except do not then re-install the Security Update 2012-001. It is possible that you may have to reboot after installing some of the updates, and you may even need to run it a 2nd time to make sure that you've got all updates, except NOT the Security Update 2012-001.

  • Since downloading Security Update 2012, Word for Mac no longer able to save or save as documents;  program freezes after clicking save

Since downloading Security Update 2012, Word for Mac 2004 is no longer able to Save or Save As documents.  After clicking Save or Save As, the program ceases to respond and must be Force Quit.  Any tips on making Word functional again?

There was a second Security Update (v1.1).  Did you download that one.  It was supposed to have fixed the problems created by the prior update.  At least is solved my problems with Quicken 2007 for Mac and AppleWorks 6.

  • After Security update 2012-001 cannot save any Office 2004 file

I installed the Office 2012-001 Security Update on a MacBook Pro running Macos 10.6.8
After that, I opened an attached Excel file from an email (received with Entourage), I performed some formula changes and wanted to save the document with a different name. I saw some changes to the screen as if the File saving Window would appear, but instead the whole program crashed. I could not perform any further changes to the file, basically all of the menus were blank, including the Quit menu. I had to Force quit the program. I thought it was only Excel, but Word also behaves the same. I am able to open any Office file with the corresponding Pages-Numbers program and save the file in the appropriate Office format, but I cannot perform any changes using the Office programs. I am writing this question here on the Apple Support Communities because I am almost sure that this behavior happened after I installed the Security Update 2012-001. After reading some of the latest support questions, I performed a Permissions repair on the StartUp disk but nothing changed.
Any suggestions will be very much appreciated.

  • Security update 2012-001 kills adobe creative suite

    I just did an update:
    Remote Desktop Client Update 3.5.2
    Security Update 2012-001 1.0
And now none of the applications in my Adobe Creative Suite work. I cannot use the "Open" command or the "Savre" command. Tha applications just quit. I make my living with these programs and am not pleased with Apple. Apple knows Mac people use these programs - that's why we'reMac people!!
I created a new prefs file - no luck.
I reinstalled Photoshop - no luck.
I tried a new user profile - no luck.
Anybody got any suggestions or ideas?
    Thanks

Same here.  I use Photoshop CS Vers 8. Did security update and *poof*. Constantly crashes when I try to save and save as.
Tried completely deleting Photoshop and all related preferences and folders in the Library.  Even tried booting in safe mode.  NADA, still bonks out.  Looking to see if can uninstall update if that's even possible.
Glad (I think) I'm not the only one.
