Security Update Fix!

Greetings All;
After applying Joesph Morris, Rob Uchtman and Jordon Bellanti's  Rosetta fix (see attached link) my Photoshop (v.8) as well as AppleWorks and my older version of Filemaker Pro (v.6) are now working normally!  Kudos to you guys for an incredible job!  All the best to you...

Kappy is  correct, I know people are out looking for a quick fix and it might work or not, but with Apple's products it's sometimes best to do it according to their proceedure.
I've outlined the restore proceedure here, it covers a lot of bases and explains what is going to occur so please don't be intimidated it's a LOT easier that it appears.
Take your time and comprehend the steps involved and you'll be backup up like before in short order.
Security Update 2012-001 Bricks Rosetta programs
Restore method.
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
#2 Try Restoring from a TimeMachine or hold option bootable clone
If you have TimeMachine drive, or a hold the option key bootable clone use that to erase and restore from before the Security Update occured.
Obviously if you didn't make a recent backup before the update, your going to have to skip to Step #3.
Note: A TM restore can take a awfully long time, a clone restore takes under 2 hours in most cases.
If you don't know how to restore from TM drive
http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html
#3 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
If no recent TM or bootable clone then:
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk and Permissions  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
Note: If Disk Uitlity can't repair the drive, then come back to seek further assistance and make sure you have a copy of your data off the machine.
#4 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#5 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.
https://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
Note: For most users likley Step #3 and #4 is likley all that is needed to be done.
That's it really.

Unverified hacks
Note: You may see a "hack" for this issue floating around, it has had mixed results as people's software is different.
You may want to try it, but it's at your own risk. It has worked fast for some and not at all for others, hopefully over time it will work for all.
The above methods I outline are Apple approved restore methods + based upon experience here and not a quick fix, but are sure to work as Apple recommends such steps themselves.
If at any time you feel this is beyond your capability, please seek local Mac/PC professional assistance before you lose your data.
In fact my steps above are very simple, you might want to have a family member or friend perfrom the proceedure in about a hour or two.
If you don't have any backup, please maintain at least a TM drive, just hook up a new blank external drive and TM will ask you to make a backup, takes some time so let it work.
If your a bit more skilled, a option bootable clone is much superior than TM drive.
Good Luck

  • Security update fixed my last remaining problems!! Woo hoo!!

I ran the security update and now mysteriously all of my remaining issues I've had since updating to 10.4.9 went away. Great news indeed, just wondering if apple puts some system updates in with the security updates?
Here were the problems I was having still after massive amounts of troubleshooting after the 10.4.9 update. But hey, they are gone now!!!
    • System freezing up several times a day
    • Ichat continually loosing its connection
    • certain apps crashing
I'm looking forward to 10.5, I know apple pushed it back, do they have a release date yet? Any word on Ilife 07 or are they skipping that one?

    10.5 - October. Don't know about iLife 07.

It looks as though Apple has indeed fixed the latest issues posted on the web over the last two weeks.

Yes, you're right - I don't know what else they can do besides disable the auto-launch and offer a warning that a "jpg" is an application!

  • Security update fixes ACL problems, almost

So far when running disk permissions, I've had one iMac C2D have no problems reported and the other iMac C2D only have ACL issues on /Library

Open the Terminal application and type:
    man chmod
Look under the heading ACL MANIPULATION OPTIONS. The argument that you would use is:
    "everyone deny delete"
If you can't understand the manual then leave your handy work alone. It's not a large security breach. chmod, chown, and chflags should only be used when you understand what you are doing.

  • Impact of missing a security update?

Currently have the imac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, running on OS X 10.6.8. I was scanning through my software update logs (after completing the Security Update 2013- 006) and realized that along the way I somehow missed the Security Update 2011- 002. Will that cause problems for me? aka do the security updates depend on each other? or maybe it is better to ask if the security updates must be completed sequentially? Also, should I go back and download this update? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. I am a mac newbie, so please keep it simple. Thanks!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You should install all security updates. They fix security problems that may be used to steal information on your iMac and cause problems soon. Apart from that, every security update fixes different things, so probably the things that the security update includes aren't fixed in your Mac

  • Does the latest security update to Safari effect OSX v10.6.8?

Does the latest security update (Fix issued 25/02/14) to Safari not effect Mac OSX v10.6.8 Snow Leopard? Software update has not flagged it up in Snow leopard, so presumably it is only Lion & Mavericks that had the flaw.

No fix is needed since that vulnarability isn't in 4.2.1.

  • Security update 2009-5 fault fix + 10.5 upgrade?

Hi, I can't restart after the Security update/iTunes etc. like others on the forum.
Seems like Install disk, Disk Utility etc. seems to be the fix on this.
However, I have lost my 10.4 install disks (long story, I am legit). I was going to get 10.5 anyhow. If I do will I be able to fix this problem or will it just confuse the issue or will I need a 10.4 disk?
    Thanks

Some of the usual "can't start up" measures don't require an install disk. Even if they don't fix the problem, thay might be at least able to tell you whether your HD directory is OK and could support a Leopard "Archive and Install."
    First I would try a [Safe Boot|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564].
If that doesn't work, then see if you can start up in [Single-User Mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492]. If you can, then go through the steps in the section "*Use fsck if necessary*" in the support article [Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417].
Even if you can't show that your HD directory is currently OK, if your data is safely backed up elsewhere then you could still buy Leopard, try to fix the HD from that install disk, and if still unsuccessful erase and re-format the HD before installing Leopard. You would then have to re-install your apps and restore your data from your backups.

  • I just wanted to chip in with my complaint that I just downloaded the Security Update 2012-001 10.6.8, and now non of my Office 2004 apps work appropriately.  I can open existing word documents, but they won't print) etc. When will apple issue a fix?

While I wait for apple to fix this issue, is there an easier fix to this than using Time Machine to restore to an earlier version?

Apple just issued an "update on the update" that seems to have fixed the problem (Security Update 2012.001 v1.1, see:  http://tidbits.com/article/12768).  All my Word 94 apps now seem to function properly.  Haven't checked everything yet, but the ability to print has been restored.
    Thanks Apple!!!!

  • Does Security Update '07-004 have fix for ethernet networking issues?

    Folks:
Have some posts trying to find out why my now 10.4.9 iBook won't connect to my still happy with 10.1.5 iMac using IP/TCP Connect to server methods. And after some digging I found a number of threads that mention a specific bug that is causing this problem. Rather than spending time to bring peripherals that aren't overused up to 1049 specs--I'd like to know if the recent security update -004 contained the necessary patch so that an Apple computer could connect to another Apple computer? Or, is the info at the thread "How to install just AppleFile Server" still the current fix for this problem? Meaning a command line procedure to fix the issue, which may or may not be easy--but which is completely unknown to me--I don't know who this "Darwin" fellow is or is supposed to be. Thoughts?

    Temp P:
Thanks for kindly taking the time to reply to my post. I have read that info before, it's linked from Software Update, but my knowledge of what each of those items is, is not enough to tell me whether it would, or has addressed this "alleged" "issue" that I and others are having trying to connect our computers--from 10.4.9 to any other, I guess, "alien" system; in my case, 10.1.5. This "problem" was posted on this forum earlier in the month--perhaps that is not long enough for mr Apple to get it into a Security Update?

    Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

  • New Os 10.5 Security update today....but didnt fix my SMB/NAS issue!

Since I am one out of many here in this forum that cnnot connect his NAS harddrive to Leopard, i was looking forward to receive an update from Apple.
Now today there is an update available, which also states it fixes Samba issues....but unfortunately no change on my NAS harddrive. still can connect, see the main folder, but cant drill down and see the files or access files. all works fine on windows (!!) and if i connect the NAS to the Mac straight away.
anybody else still has issues after today's software update?
    Please let me know,
    Thx, Markus

As soon as I read your post, I went checking for software updates and voila, there was the Security Update.
I downloaded and installed it, but no good news. Finder still only shows the topmost shared folders inside the NAS drive, but it doesn't let me browse into them.
I really think there is something wrong with the kernel or with the smbfs support. Are we supposed to get stuck with this problem until Apple finally releases Darwin 9.1? How long will it take?

Looks like Apple did the same thing with Lion that Microsoft did with Vista. Brought it on the market before it was ready.
I run a MacBook Pro and upgrading to Lion caused me two days of trouble and computer crash. Router settings removed and router blocked. Dongle not recognised, you name it.
In the end, I gave up and using my Snow Leopard installation disk and a Time Machine Backup finally got my computer up and running again. Thanks to Lion, I think I'll stay with OS X 10.6.8 at least it's reliable.
