Security update fixed my last remaining problems!! Woo hoo!!

I ran the security update and now mysteriously all of my remaining issues I've had since updating to 10.4.9 went away. Great news indeed, just wondering if apple puts some system updates in with the security updates?
Here were the problems I was having still after massive amounts of troubleshooting after the 10.4.9 update. But hey, they are gone now!!!
• System freezing up several times a day
• Ichat continually loosing its connection
• certain apps crashing
I'm looking forward to 10.5, I know apple pushed it back, do they have a release date yet? Any word on Ilife 07 or are they skipping that one?

  • Security Update 2008-002 - Causing USB Problems (slow)

Ever since installing the Security Update 2008-002 last week, I've had problems with both the front and rear USB ports. At first, all ports only ran at a slow speed (I presume usb 1.1). I disconnected all USB devices, powered down and rebooted. This seems to have 'fixed' the front usb port.
The problem is that the USB hub that I have no longer runs at usb 2 - only usb 1. Has any one else had these problems? Any one know of any fixes?
    thanks
    Dan
btw - I really wish Apple would provide a warning to users that updates may cause problems to specific devices.

Certainly one of the strangest patches/upgrades I've ever seen, but nothing much consistent as to what is affected or what might cure it.
PS. If this is the way things are going to go, I guess I'll not be upgradong OS7.5.5 to Os7.6.1 anytime soon!

  • Security update 2007-005 and Imovie problem

Yesterday my macbook automatically installed security update 2007-005. I later opened Imovie HD 6 and found a problem - when opening, the program title etc was shown in the desktop menu but then the last movie I worked on started to open, putting the opening picture directly onto the top left of the desktop over everything else including the menu. The Imovie page then opened on top of this, with a blank Imovie screen. To get the movie into the screen I have to start the movie running. Imovie then seems to work OK but this leaves fragments of the first screenshot of the movie still on the desktop until overwritten by other programs or actions. What can I do about it?

    Hi
Can you tell people how you cured the problem, so that those who search looking for answers to a similar problem know how to fix it?

  • SNAFU - Installed Security Update from Mar. 16 problem

I just installed the Security update that was released on March 16 '06 for PPC, and now programs are doing odd things. I haven't done a complete run through of all of what's not working, however the thing that was immediatly effected was my AOL AIM for Mac. I'm running a Power Book G4 with 10.3.9, and I've never had problems like this before. It only began after I installed the update.
Because this is the first real screw up I've had in nearly two years, I'm essentially clueless in regard as to how to fix it. Because my computer searches for updates on a daily basis and I normally just respond with a quick 'install program' click, I messed this one up. Because I've never had problems like this, I'm at a loss as to how to fix it and/or get rid of it.
What I assume would be the easiest fix would be to get rid of the update, but I don't know how to do that, what to delete/uninstall, etc. Any advice, help, touble shooting, etc? Anything at all at this point would be appreciated.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Brittany,
It wouldn't hurt to do another Repair Permissions, but I'm not sure it would help, either...
I'll have to research to see if there's a way to undo security updates (I don't think there is, actually).
You may be able to reinstall your last combined OS X update, and then work via Software Update to work your way back to where you need to be software-wise. If you have been using Software Update to automatically update your mac, you probably don't have the full combined update for 10.3.9. Below is where you can find it at Apple. (Note: the full combined update has everything you need to go from the earllier versions of OS X 10.3 to 10.3.9)
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxcombinedupdate1039.html
Another option: First off, I'm unfamiliar with AOL. Do you have a way of reinstalling AOL, while keeping all your AOL files intact? You might consider doing that to see if it repairs the problem (I'd probably try to do this before doing the combined update install, mentioned above...)
You might hang back on all of this to see if someone gives an easier fix...
    Food for thought, anyway.

  • Security Update 2006-001 causing a problem?

I just installed the new security update on my work mac. The result after the resart was that all of my programs act like they've never been opened before. My address book is gone, my mail started over, Firefox, iTunes, etc. Along with this went my desktop. Is there a fix to this or am I stuck? I'm afraid to recommend to others in my department to do the security upgrade at this point.
    Thanks for any help.
    Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Thank you so much for the kind welcome and helpful suggestions!
The apple.com reference was helpful in that it described a very similar result, but after the restart, I logged in as usual. In the users folder of the computer I have a "home" icon with my user name which seems empty. In the side menu of the window where my "home" icon would be is a folder with my same user name. This has my files - even the desktop but in a folder.
Thanks again. I'm going to try this suggestion to see if it will still solve the problem.

  • Help! I downloaded and installed the a security update for safari last night and after it rebooted my system quit recognizing my password and quit working, taking me to a utilities window.

I let my system download and install the latest security update for Safari  yesterday, 28 Apr 14, and when it rebooted, it wouldn't let me login.  Instead it took me to a utilities windown that allowed me to verify my h/d then told me it couldn't be repaired so I would need to save all of my documents (not sure how since it won't boot up) and reinstall OS X.  Help!

    terrelld,
if you’ve been making regular backups to date, then you could just restore from the last update which you’d made before installing the most recent Safari update. If you haven’t been making regular backups to date, you can try the method provided on this Apple page, in the “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility” section. If you’re not already making regular backups, then I’d highly recommend purchasing an external disk for use as a Time Machine backup destination once you’ve gotten this resolved, so that this sort of problem would be more easily resolved in the future.

  • Security Update Fix!

    Greetings All;
After applying Joesph Morris, Rob Uchtman and Jordon Bellanti's  Rosetta fix (see attached link) my Photoshop (v.8) as well as AppleWorks and my older version of Filemaker Pro (v.6) are now working normally!  Kudos to you guys for an incredible job!  All the best to you...

Kappy is  correct, I know people are out looking for a quick fix and it might work or not, but with Apple's products it's sometimes best to do it according to their proceedure.
I've outlined the restore proceedure here, it covers a lot of bases and explains what is going to occur so please don't be intimidated it's a LOT easier that it appears.
Take your time and comprehend the steps involved and you'll be backup up like before in short order.
Security Update 2012-001 Bricks Rosetta programs
    Restore method.
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
#2 Try Restoring from a TimeMachine or hold option bootable clone
If you have TimeMachine drive, or a hold the option key bootable clone use that to erase and restore from before the Security Update occured.
Obviously if you didn't make a recent backup before the update, your going to have to skip to Step #3.
Note: A TM restore can take a awfully long time, a clone restore takes under 2 hours in most cases.
If you don't know how to restore from TM drive
    http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html
    #3 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
If no recent TM or bootable clone then:
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk and Permissions  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
Note: If Disk Uitlity can't repair the drive, then come back to seek further assistance and make sure you have a copy of your data off the machine.
#4 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#5 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
Note: For most users likley Step #3 and #4 is likley all that is needed to be done.
    That's it really.

    Unverified hacks
Note: You may see a "hack" for this issue floating around, it has had mixed results as people's software is different.
You may want to try it, but it's at your own risk. It has worked fast for some and not at all for others, hopefully over time it will work for all.
The above methods I outline are Apple approved restore methods + based upon experience here and not a quick fix, but are sure to work as Apple recommends such steps themselves.
If at any time you feel this is beyond your capability, please seek local Mac/PC professional assistance before you lose your data.
In fact my steps above are very simple, you might want to have a family member or friend perfrom the proceedure in about a hour or two.
If you don't have any backup, please maintain at least a TM drive, just hook up a new blank external drive and TM will ask you to make a backup, takes some time so let it work.
If your a bit more skilled, a option bootable clone is much superior than TM drive.
    Good Luck

  • "Security Update 2008-008 (Client PPC)" problems

    Hi,
I updated my G4 yesterday with 'Security Update 2008-008 (Client PPC)' & stuck with blue screen with spinning wheel. I tried booting it in safe mode, but it didn't help. Still the same. Pressing 'C' with install disk gives access to Disk Utility, I verified permissions, which goes smooth. Can not proceed with installation since have only 700 MB available disk space & no backup.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi Mahesh, and a warm welcome to the forums!
hpr3 has some good advice, but just to add...
700MB free space is a real problem, quite likely OSX will start self destructing below 2-3 GB free space, and really be slowed down with less than 20% free space on the HDD.
You simply must get another Drive & backup, so you can Install the OS again.

  • Security Update 2007-004 v1.1 Problem

There seems to be a problem in Security Update 2007-004 v1.1
As soon as I installed it my system would no longer shutdown, restart or logout. The finder shuts down, the dock shuts down, the icons on my desktop go away then the system hangs at my desktop picture. It never completes the selected option. I've done the following: reset the PMU, zapped PRAM, reset NVRAM, dumped com.apple.loginwindow.plist (both files), clean installed OSX & all updates, started in safe mode, ran cron scripts, cleared system, local, user and font caches.
I then clean installed 10.4 again from my original DVD. - restart/shut down/log out work.
    Installed 10.4.9 combo updater - restart/shut down/log out work
Useed software update to apply ALL patches EXCEPT Security Update 2007-004 v1.1 - restart/shut down/log out work.
    Installed Security Update 2007-004 v1.1 - restart/shut down/log out all fail

Let's just clarify the state of things. When you say "clean install", are you telling the truth? Did you wipe the drive - this is a totally vanilla installation, with no third-party applications, nothing in any StartupItems folder, no InputManagers, no Login Items, no nothing?

  • Security update fixes ACL problems, almost

So far when running disk permissions, I've had one iMac C2D have no problems reported and the other iMac C2D only have ACL issues on /Library

Open the Terminal application and type:
    man chmod
Look under the heading ACL MANIPULATION OPTIONS. The argument that you would use is:
    "everyone deny delete"
If you can't understand the manual then leave your handy work alone. It's not a large security breach. chmod, chown, and chflags should only be used when you understand what you are doing.

  • Problems with recent security update

Ever since I installed the latest security update, I have had one problem after another. My software programs - Acrobat, QuarkXpress, Firefox, Photoshop - have all frozen and given me the "program not responding" message numerous times. I actually reinstalled Acrobat. Haven't used it much since, so I'm hoping it is fixed. Any suggestions? This is really frustrating.

Start by Verifying, then if necessary, repairing the Drive. Open up Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities. Select the boot Volume that is being used (in most cases it's the same as the Drive listing; it will probably be called Hard Drive or Macintosh Hard Drive. If you only have one Volume, you can select either) and Verify. Repair will be grayed out. If any errors are reported, then you will need to boot from your install disk.

  • Removing the Last Security Update

I would like to remove the last security update (I think it's - Security Update 2007-002 (Universal) - Security Updates ) - to see if it's what messed up 1 application - (that's the only thing that's changed).
and No - I didn't do a backup prior to the install... (too bad)
Q: how do I manually remove the last security update

    Hi Rev Dave;
    What application?
Maybe if you tell us that information we might be able to tell you if the Security Update might be causing this problem.
Removing an update is non-trival task especially if you don't have a backup.

  • Any security update slow-down problem occuring ???

    hi all,
My macbk has slowed to a crawl on the net. connecting from one site to another takes up to 20 seconds. I've done permissions / onyx/ scripts/ reset safari & camino /cleared browser caches and each time it speeds up a bit but within a few minutes online it's slow again. hangs up initially at "looking for..." in the bottom bar and shows highlighted bar hung right before "www". OR at the "go to" / "contacting" stage at the same WWW
The only thing I can think that I did at about the time it began slowing down was , using software update (which I rarely use- normally download directly from the apple site, but got momentarily lazy!).
My Techtool pro is 4.2.1 and won't run on my intel apparently - or so it says in the dialogue box and when I try to download and install the incremental update it says it can't find where to install. so I am stuck with out it at the moment.
If it weren't so rare I would think I had a WORM. but that IS rare on a mac I think.
so thinking about possible linked problems with that security update.
anyone heard of any problems ?
I do have applecare, so if all else fails I can call them I guess

  • Security Update 2008-002 - causes problems??

After finally downloading and installing my security update I am left wondering if it causes problems! In my Cubase SX 4.1 I have just tried to export an audio mix and keep getting the message "Unknown Error"! I have contacted Steinberg support and having tried everything they are baffled and point the finger towards the Mac. Before installing the security update I had no such problem! This new computer, operating system or the pentium chips seem very buggy to me now. On my previous computer (Power PC) everything worked fine! With deadline's and mixes to complete, does anyone know of issues or how to solve the problem? I have done everything possible with Steinberg including reinstalling the program.
    Thanks in advance...

    Greetings,
If you are using Time Machine, you can simply go back to a day before the Update and see if that helps.
    Cheers,
    M.
