Security Update for SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 (KB2977320)

So i have been trying to install this update on one of our servers since it is showing up on our MBSA scans but it has been failing on one of our machines with the error code: 0x80070643
I downloaded the update and tired to install it manually. The installer returned: There are no SQL Server instances or shared features that can be updated on this computer. If that was true then why is SCCM still pushing the update to the machine and why
is the MBSA showing that it needs the update? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

Based on my understanding, the error code: 0x80070643 was thrown out when you install KB2977320 with MBSA. And installation also failed when you download and install update manually.
Regarding the error code: 0x80070643, it can be caused if the MSI software update registration has become corrupted, or if the .NET Framework installation on the computer has become corrupted. To fix this issue, we can follow these methods:
Fix MSI software update registration corruption issues
Repair the .Net Framework
Uninstall and reinstall the .Net Framework

Besides, the security update is released for SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2, please check the version of SQL Server you are using. About how to check the SQL Server version, please refer to this article: How to tell what SQL Server version you are running

If you find the sentence “A failure was detected for a previous installation” on the Summary.txt log file, please repair SQL Server using the following article:

How to uninstall/remove security update for SQL Server 2012

My requirement is to uninstall/remove security update for SQL
Server 2012 Service Pack 1 only. so are these below steps are correct or do I need to take any extra precaution for uninstallation?

As per my knowledge in SQL Server 2005, we cannot uninstall a service pack. we have to uninstall SQL Server 2005 completely, and reinstall SQL Server 2005 with previous service
packs and updates. but Starting SQL Server 2008, we can uninstall a service pack using Control Panel.

According to your description, when you install SQL Server 2008 R2 service pack 1, we need to verify if
you must have administrative rights on the computer.
There are multiple files available for the download, you will be prompted to select the files you need. We need to verify if you run the SQLServer2008R2SP1-KB2528583-x64-ENU.exe. Or you can install SQL server updates from the command
prompt and check if it can install successfully.
You can prepare an installation of database engine instance to include product update:
setup.exe /q /IAcceptSQLServerLicenseTerms /ACTION=PrepareImage /UpdateEnabled=True /UpdateEnabled=True /UpdateSource=<path where the update is downloaded> /INSTANCEID=<Instance ID> /FEATURES=SQLEngine

Hi Manne,
As your description, you come across an error when trying to install SQL Server 2008 express Service Pack 1 on windows XP Service Pack 3 machine. From your error log, I get the error(unable to read registry value). As my analysis, the issue could be due
to that your account doesn't have access to registry. Below are the recommendations for troubleshooting the issue.
1. Make sure that you log in as an administrator of the machine.
2. Please follow the steps below to make sure that you have granted the right permission to registry.
a. Located HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server in registry.
b. Right click and go to Permission, then you could see user accounts or groups. If your user account is not in the list, you could click Add to add your account there.
c. Select your account and Click on Advance.
d. Check on both check box ('Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent'.
and 'Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object'), click OK.
e. Click OK again.

My enviroment SQL Server has 3 Servers
One Server for DataBase Engine
One Server for SSIS & SSAS
One Server for SSRS
I need to install Service Pack 3 for SQL Server 2008 R2, but have a doubt , Do I need install service pack in each Rol Server or just install over Data Base Engine Server ?

SP3 for SQL server 2008 r2 is not there I guess you are talking about SQL server 2008.When you install Service pack and reach to 'Select Features ' page please select all the features. You can see SSIS ,SSRS and SSAS listed there as well with database engine
and client tools.
After selecting all features SP will be installed for all and all features will be patched

WSUS service pack updates for SQL Server 2008 R2

Hello, how do we configure WSUS for SQL Server Service Packs? One problem we have is that we do not see SQL server 2008 R2 SP2 available as a download from our WSUS server and this is when SQL SP1 is installed. Now I can apply these service packs manually
but when we have 100's of virtual machines with different versions and editions of SQL this task can be quite daunting. Suggestions please?

from memory, SQL service packs and CUs are not released via WSUS.

Or, you can check the MU catalog (which doesn't necessarily mean the update is available via WSUS, but if the update you seek in is the MU catalog, you can usually import it into your WSUS)

some updates for products are not able to be released via WSUS, for various reasons, and so in those cases, you need a different deployment solution.

I have uninstall the SQL Server Tools and Workstation Components 2005.
But still unable to upg the SQL Server with the KB249411. Any more ideas?

MS14-044 for SQL Server 2008 Standard on Windows Server 2003?

MS14-044 was recently released and states that it applied to MS SQL Server 2008 SP3, yet the patches available for this security bulletin do not list Windows Server 2003 in the supported operating systems. Does MS14-044 not apply to SQL Server running
on Windows Server 2003? If it does apply, why isn't there an update available to run on Windows Server 2003?

According to your description, the patches available for MS14-044 do not list Windows Server 2003 in the supported operating systems and you want to know whether MS14-044 applies to SQL Server running on Windows Server
2003.
Based on my test, KB2977321 applies to SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 product and it does apply to SQL Server 2008 SP3 running on Windows Server 2003.
I installed SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 in Windows Server 2003 SP2 x86. After the service pack 3 installation completed, KB2977321 was offered in the Automatic Update.
Besides, you can manually install the update by downloading the update form the Download Center web site as well.
I also tried the manually installation and I downloaded the Security Update for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 (KB2977321) from this web: Security Update for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3 (KB2977321) (https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/MS14-044),
it was installed successfully.
After installed security upgrade, I checked the file attributes and compared to this article: MS14-044: Description of the security update for SQL Server 2008 SP3 (GDR): August 12, 2014(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2977321/en-us).
The result is the same.
According to my test, MS14-044 applies to SQL Server running on Windows Server 2003 even though Windows Server 2003 is not listed in the supported operating systems.

I have check with Oracle on this and Service Pack 2 is not officially supported, but I would like to see if there is anyone out there running OBIEE 11.1.1.7 with SQL server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2? We are currently running 2008 R2 but without the service pack. Our Oracle team would like upgrade to SP2. If you have run sp2, are you encountering any issues, i.e. performance.

Do I need to install Security Hotfix (KB2977319) after Cumulative Update 12 for SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2

I have installed Cumulative Update 12 for SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 on my SharePoint instances. This was to resolve a known issue faced with the instance. CU12 helped resolve the issue. My company is rather strict regarding security hotfixes. But I am
not sure if this particular hotfix [Security Hotfix (KB2977319)] is required if the instance has CU12 applied.
Tested this on a Lab server, the installation did run fine, the summary log also stated that the KB is applied. But the Build Number did not change. Hence the doubt.

Yes you must install Security update mentioned in KB 2977319 it is important for SQL Server to be patches with this security update. Without this it could allow an attacker to compromise your system and gain control over it.

The article you mention takes for granted that a valid Analysis Services XMLA URL is present, which is not my case.
I have found a good article on how to configure specifically Analysis Services 2008 here:

The article is the nearest I could find from my particular software platform (Vista).
What I'm currently dealing with is [nQSError: 64203] "XMLAnalysisError.0xc1010000", which is probably some security setting I have to get right. I will keep the thread updated if I move on.
