Security Update Screwed Up Sound

I just installed the new security update and now my sound is gone. The icon in my menu bar is missing, it shows an open space instead of the speaker, and clicking on that space just make the ball spin. In System Prefs, the Sound output shows no options.
I'm running a g4 powerbook with leopard.
thanks.

Jon,
I would start off by resetting the P-Ram...
You probably know this but hold down the command/option/P/R key at startup and let is sound 3 or 4 times...
If that doesn't do it, try setting the PMU....
Here are the instructions....

Problems here too but it's with Photoshop CS Vers 8. Did security update and *poof*. Constantly crashes when I try to save and save as.
Tried completely deleting Photoshop and all related preferences and folders in the Library.  Even tried booting in safe mode.  NADA, still bonks out.  Looking to see if can uninstall update if that's even possible.

  • Security update screwed my browser

    Hello to all,
I just updated today (a security update and itunes) and my browser freezes (spinning wheel) on some pages. It's driving me crazy. Safari and Firefox don't work on pages like paypal, ebay and other ones. Yesterday everything was fine; I started having problems after the update. I really don't know if it is related, but I would appreciate if someone told me how to unistall the automatic updates I just installed.
    Thank you very much. Regards.

Without knowing the level of your Mac experience(s) some advice
    about maintenance may fall into an area of no advice at all to some;
while to others, even though it is basic and sometimes totally over-
looked (esp. by new users) the idea of using Disk Utility's ability to
'repair disk permissions' on the Macintosh HD volume, is valid.
You may be able to simply repair an computer or user account issue
through use of the Disk Utility in the running OS X system, or from
the booted OS X installer disc's version of Disk Utility. When this
utility is run from the Installer (note menu bar in header, options in
drop-down allow more than just an install) you can run a Repair Disk
from the Disk Utility; you can't do that from the System's own version.
The booted install disc's utilities can be dangerous, and are capable
of totally erasing everything on the hard disk drive; so use it careful.
Some odd behaviors can be resolved, if you haven't been doing it,
by starting the computer in SafeBoot mode and once you are past
the point it asks for you to log into your admin account, and then
the desktop/finder appears, you then run Disk Utility from the Mac's
system (see GO in Finder, click Utilities folder, & find/run D.U. there)
& then run 'repair disk permissions' - when done, quit that, and restart.
If the general computer system is kept in a good state of maintenance
and appears OK, there may be a need to also consider later browser
versions that are updated and more secure. Also, the Adobe Flash &
Adobe Shockwave player/plugins should be updated. This would also
mean the older versions would need to be removed using an Adobe
Uninstaller for each of them. You can't have a browser running if/when
    you are installing/uninstalling these items.
There probably are other basic and well discussed items to consider,
and the simplest would be to start in SafeBoot, repair disk permissions
and then restart. Or, if booted from the Install Disc's version of Disk
Utility, see about the health of the hard drive by checking Verify, and
note the status of SMART for the hard disk drive; also the percentages
of total capacity of the drive that are in use, verses the free/unused space.
The symptoms of a problem may have nothing to do with the cause; so
troubleshooting can sometimes involve performing general tasks that
may help the system fix itself. Without knowing what else is going on in
a computer half-way around the world, there really isn't much else to
do remotely. Except hope you do make back-ups and/or full clones of
the entire contents of your computer's hard disk drive, and do so when
the computer is healthy, and before or between major updates Then, you
may have something to revert back to (you can re-clone a clone back in.)
Anyway, I've said too much; and perhaps nothing at all. It would have been
quicker to have the computer in question sitting on a bench/table near me
and just taking 15 to 45 minutes time and see where my intuition would go.
Best wishes & regards, in any case...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • After 10.4.9 u+security update no more eject/sound keys

After updating to 10.4.9(PPC) and applying the latest security updates my 3
sound keys and eject cd/dvd key dont work anymore.
they even dont show up on keyboard layout utility.
usual solutions (nvram, pram) applied t o no avail.
    somebody got a solution?

Then, it might be a keyboard problem. The MacPro Keyboard that came with my G4 doesn't exhibit any of your problems. Do these: reinstall the 10.4.9 COMBO update, boot with your install disk and repair the disk and permissions, or get another keyboard to see if the problem persists.

  • Security update and fonts

I did a security update on Friday, April 6 on two of my machines and now I can't use certain fonts. I did not update a third machine and the fonts work fine on that machine. Any ideas on how to get the fonts to work again? I've reinstalled original copies, but it still doesn't work. HELP!

Do you know if the Apple Security Updates are really necessary?
IMHO, Apple wouldn't release them if they were unnecessary. Following the steps outlined below should mitigate problems when updating:
Get yourself a bootable, external HD, and make a bootable backup before updating. Then, peruse these:

  • Lastest security update hosed my G5 PM

Background: I have a dual G5 PM with two on board drives (one connected into a Seritek adaptor). In the past I have had issues with it waking from sleep (it would shut off at the gray apple revolving circle) and after rebooting, it would sometimes quit during boot, especially after updates.
*Current condition:* After restart with this new security update the primary drive would quit during boot as described above. Then, after resetting pram and PMU, I booted into the secondary backup drive and checked the primary HD for permissions and verified it. All reported was OK.
So then I tried to boot into the primary hd again. But again it continued to quit at the gray screen. So I went back to the secondary drive and verified the the first HD. This time it came up with errors that DU and DriveGenius could not fix. I then decided to wipe it clean and reinstall/clone. At this time I also installed the update to the second drive. The Primary drive install went OK using the Tiger disk, but, when it finished and I tried to boot the primary again to install settings and files, but then I discovered that neither HDs would boot.
Most recently I tried resetting the firmware and running the Apple hardware test, but that crashes the PM during the logic board test.
Any suggestions, other than get a new Mac, would be appreciated.

Well it turns out that I have mercifully been spared logic board problems...this time. It turns out that the last security update screwed up my hardrive's Seritek PCI adaptor. Firmtek's webssite had several methods to get back up and running again, but it sure took a while reinstalling everything.

  • Security Update 2009: Now Photoshop License Is Gone!

HELP!! The last time Software Update ran, it installed a new Security Update. Since then, a bunch of my apps have stopped working. My brand new Adobe CS4? Useless; the software won't launch because my licensing is suddenly no good. Virtual PC? Useless; the software won't launch because it says my licensing is no good. What happened? Is the Security Update screwed up? If so, how do I un-install the damned thing? I need my Photoshop and my Virtual PC. HELP!!

These issues are probably related to the 3rd party software not being compatible with Leopard.
You can check with them for information.
And until they resolve the issue, you can simply boot into your Leopard DVD and using your TM backup revert to the time just before the security update. It's that simple.

  • System preferences shot after Security Update 2006-008 - no sound any more

All sorts of strange problems after running the 2006-008 security update, yet only affecting one my two MacMini:
System Preferences completely "shot", with the Date&Time item/icon looking very odd.
The little flag for language/keyboard setting and date/time did not show any more in the top menu bar -- basically everything left side of the blue Spotlight magnifying glass icon was gone.
Also Safari much more prone to quit.
Managed to delete some prefs and cached stuff and to replace the System Preferences application with the one from the other (working ok) Mac.
(I wish such components were available on the web!)
However: Currently I get no sound whatsoever. When I check the option to have the little speaker symbol displayed in the menu bar it shows. But as soon as I click it once, it vanishes from the menu bar.
In the Sound window, I have Volume set to full, yet everything is greyed out, "Sound off" is checked without my doing, while "Display sound volume in the menu bar" unchecks itself everytime(!)
And, very odd: While resetting PRAM and the fsck-routine working ok (no problems found) and disk utility claiming to have repaired all permissions, I can not run a reset of Open Firmware/nvram with the O-F-Apple-Alt key combination (I'm using an original Apple USB Keyboard for this, since I'm aware that my 3rd party keyboards from Logitech and Microsoft often refuse to perform such kind of "low level" tasks).

  • Sound gone after security update!

I just ran the latest security update (2006-2) on my wife's Intel Core Duo Mini and the sound device is no longer available. No start up chime. No sound what so ever. The volume level does not even appear in the menu bar and the volume keys on the keyboard do nothing.
The Sound pane (under the output tab) in System preferences says:
    No output devices found
Is this a known issue with the update or has something gone wrong with the computer (it is only four days old).
Mac Mini Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

One of the few settings that Mac OS X saves in the PRAM is the system volume. If you're system volume was set to mute when you shut down, you won't hear the chime at startup. But it was odd you couldn't change the volume with the keys or the menubar.
By resetting the PRAM, the system will forget if it's been muted, turned very low or very high and reset to the middle. Usually you hold all four keys down at the same time until you hear the startup chime for the third time and then let go. Thanks for sharing what you've found, someone else may come by with the same question.

  • Security Update 2007-009 - Now no sound??

I just installed the freshly released Security Update 2007-009 through software update. I now have no sound at all.
System Preferences informs me that I have no Ouput or Input devices attached. System Profiler, however, tells me I do. I hear the chimes upon startup - so I know this isn't a hardware issue.
    Anyone else?? I'm NOT happy!

  • Problems after a Security Update

    I am running Logic 7.1 on a G5.
After running the latest security update Logic seems to emit only one sound. A v high pitched squeek similar to that of a bat (15kHz). The channel strips are showing a normal output but nothing is coming out of the speakers.
I have downloaded and run the latest driver for my MOTU 828Mk II.
Quick Time and I - Tunes sound normal.
The only thing I did different was change my Project Manager settings recently.
Pro Application Support is up to date.
    OSX 10.4.6
    Any clues?

    Doug,
I did that - Still nothing - I am now doing an erase install of Tiger and after the agro I shall feel all clean and pure.
I just hope I can get DFH Superior in without tearing my hair out again. As for the I-lok ~ Grrrrrr.
Thanks all the same everyone. For the record I just installed a replacement second hard drive and for a while most things worked. After trying to get a few of my old EXS instruments back into Logic using Aliases the trouble started. Call me cynical but when Logic says Error code -35 and you can't find what it means, numpties like me are bound to end up screwing things up.....
Trust me - It blew it when the security update was installed.....

  • Quicktime 7.1.6 Security Update screwup

First time an Apple Update screwed up some settings on my G4 iMac. After installing the Quicktime 7.1.6 Security Update (from downloaded file, not from Software Update…) and restarting, a number of System Preferences had been cahnged (reset to default): the Display Settings had been changed from 1440x900 to 1024x640, the Menubar Clock was changed back to display, and several default MenuItems (Sound, PPoE Status) had been added back to the Menubar. After resetting everything back to my preferred settings and restarting, my settings persisted.

I quit all applications other than Finder before installing the Update.
I ran Disk Repair while booted from a bootable 10.4.9 partition on an external hard drive on 5/28 (showed no problems) and again after booting as Single User and using Applejack to delete caches so that dmg files would mount (another but different problem with OS X 10.4.9 (see http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4375641#4375641)
Curiously, the problem with Quicktime Security Update did not occur after updating my Core 2 Duo MacBook (using Software Update rather than dowloaded updater).

  • Computer will not start after update. Won't boot. Security Update. Grey.

This is a fix that worked for me. 2 times in the past Automatic Software update has corrupted my hard drive.
When installing using SOFTWARE UPDATE the installer for the security update fails, says it has been moved to trash and to try again. Well if you restart, you get a system hang and much sadness.
I tried the usual stuff, booting from CD(osx) and selecting the disk utility from the top menu. But that didn't fix it. Then I ran DiskWarrior, which usually fixes anything, but it didn't this time.
Here is what did work. I checked my other mac to see what the last security update was, and it had the 2009-001 update (worked on that mac). So I knew now that the one that screwed up was that update.
I downloaded that update to my laptop.
I started my iMac (the one that crashed after update) in "target disk mode" - this treats the whole computer as an external firewire disk drive (it's totally safe as long as you don't erase anything) - you start into target mode by holding down "T" key while turning on, leave it pressed until you see a symbol on the screen that looks like a "Y".
I hooked up a firewire cable from the iMac to my laptop and waited until the iMacs Hard drive appeared on the laptop desktop.
Now you can browse the corrupt drive just like a regular external drive.
If you have an external drive with room, this is a good time to back up the entire corrupt drive to a folder on the other external just in case...
But what I have found is that when the installer for the security update failed, it corrupted the file that mac osx needs to read during boot, so it is an isolated failure, but it is always better to be safe.
at this point you are ready to attempt the repair..
On my laptop I ran the installer for the security update I had manually downloaded from apples site. When asked for destination for the install I select the HD for the iMac (or whatever unit has the no boot situation that got corrupted). (note that if you have not renamed your main hard drives, you will have a choice of 2 with the same name). Usually the drive on the computer you are using will be first in line. Rename the drive on the computer you are using before running the install if you want to be sure there are no mistakes..)
Select the disk you want to (re)install to, and let it go. It is a long update, so be patient and let it finish. It should say preparing install, installing, finishing, and optimizing system performance...
When it says that the installation completed successfully you can eject the corrupt hard drive by dragging to the trash to dismount it. Then unplug the firewire cable.
Shut down the repaired (hopefully) machine by holding the power button until it turns of.
    Count to ten.
Prepare a celebratory or misery soothing beverage (but keep it in the other room).
Some people like to start in safe mode by holding down shift key while turning on, but I couldn't get it to work on mine...
Turn the computer back on and wait. The boot process will take longer than usual the first time.
If and when you get to login or desktop, go in and run apple disk utility and repair the disk, and repair the permissions.
If it worked, breathe a sigh, do a happy dance. And from now on when mac os says there are updates available, write them down, then go to apples site, download them manually, and install them manually, one at a time from now on, to avoid hassles.
    Hope this helps!
    Enjoy!

Thanks for the post/tips newfocus, hope it helps somebody!

  • I need help with the Security Update 2006-002!

Security update has really screwed up the two systems I've installed it on:
    1) My G4 PowerBook refused to reboot after the update, getting only as far as the initialApple screen. Rebooting with a 10.4 install disk and using Disk Utilities to try to repair the disk either results in an "Unable to unmount disk" error, or if Repair does proceed, it is unable to repair the disk. I get a "Invalid node structure" error message, then a "Rebuilding B-Tree" message, then a "The Voluma Macintosh HD could not be repaird" message, and Repair quits with a "Error: the underlying task reported failure on exit" message.
    2) On my Dual 2 GHz G5 desktop, Safari appears to be unable to load more than six URL:s in 6 tabs; I read about 20 webcomics all organized in a bookmarks folder, and my usual practice is to select "Open in tabs" to open them all at once. Heretofore Safari has opened all the tabs and all the URLs without a hitch. After the update it will open all the ttabs but only about the first six sites load - all the rest just sit there spinning their wheels.
Also it has hosed iChat on my Dsktop. iChat will open, but will not send or receive chats, and will not open the buddy window.
Also Also, the system frequently hangs, seizing up anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes, then resuming normally. Safari seems to be the culprit, but I can't really tell.
I need an update to recover from the effects of the last update.

I'm not very knowledgeable on macs yet being a new user (switcher) However, there appear to have been too many problems for too many people and too many systems associated with this update for it to be co-incidental. Take a look through the topics since the update appeared. My computer is brand new. The update did something that screwed something in the startup file (or whatever) The nice man in India helped me get the computer going by removing all sorts of wonderous things, this after his colleague in Cork had sent me all sorts of stuff to my work address to try out when I got home, like pram and nvram (which only made things worse) and other things. Now my computers fixed. Except that there's now no printer, it won't find the drivers off the install discs and any driver I load from canon isn't recognised or a script isn't recognised. I bought this thing to get away from problems like this on PCs!!!!
