If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop

  • After latest update - Numbers shows in the Application Folder

I recently updated Numbers and Pages and shows that the applications are installed under purchase section of software.  But the applications don't show in the application foler on my computer.  I can't remove the applications to try reinstall>
Any idea how I resolve this issue?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,
he applications don't show in the application foler on my computer.  I can't remove the applications to try reinstall>
If, after following Wayne's suggestion of restarting your computer, for some reason you still can't see the latest version of Numbers in the Applications folder, you could try going to Launchpad and looking there for the Numbers icon with four columns. You can use Launchpad to uninstall an app. Hold down the option key until all the icons jiggle, then click the x by the icon of the app you want to uninstall. Then go to the Mac App Store and try downloading again.

  • Unable to open Applications folder

I am unable to open my Applications folder and my Pictures folder. When I click on either one of them, this box pops up: "There is no default application specified to open the document Applications (or Pictures, if that is the folder I'm clicking on)." In other words, it appears that the system thinks the Applications and Pictures folders are documents. I can access the contents of these two folders by clicking on "Show Package Contents." I have checked many other folders, and they all open normally. I've also run repair permissions in Disk Utility, but that has not helped. I would appreciate any suggestions to correct this issue.

something caused them to be treated as packages instead of folders
When this has happened in the past what happened is the bundle bit got set on some folder it shouldn't have been. As to WHY that happened, I don't think anyone ever figured it out. If one has installed Xcode I know you can easily check on the bundle bit and reset it. Sometimes Apple has the necessary tools installed without Xcode: you need GetFileInfo and SetFile, which might be in /usr/bin if Apple is installing them by default in Snow Leopard (I used to put them online as a public service, that may not be necessary now).
To check to see if the bundle bit is set you use GetFileInfo in Terminal:
    GetFileInfo ~/Pictures
Pressing return after typing the above will return the following:
    directory: "/Users/francine/Pictures"
    attributes: avbstClinmedz
    created: 12/12/2008 11:05:55
    modified: 03/31/2010 01:23:28
In this case the bundle bit is NOT set (lower case "b") although the custom icon is. If the attributes shows
    avBstclinmedz
as it sounds to me like it would, then the bundle bit is set and can be changed using the SetFile command:
    SetFile -a b ~/Pictures
The situation is a bit trickier if the root level, main Application folder also has the bundle bit set, since that folder belongs to the system. One would have to run the command using sudo.

  • Anything linking to Applications Folder crashes after installing an application?

I've just recently downloaded a game (Borderlands) on my Macbook Pro, and now I'm unable to access my applications folder.
Whenever I'm trying to remove the game through programs like AppZapper, the app crashes as well.
I've googled and had no luck in the past 2 hours, trying everything from terminal commands to deleting plist files to stop it from crashing.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thank you.

If it's the game, or remnants of the game, that are causing the kernel panics, you need to contact the developer for the "right way" to uninstall the application and all auxiliary files. AppZapper is OK for some apps, but for those that place auxiliary files all over the place (MS Office, any Adobe app, etc.) you need to uninstall according to the developers instructions, even if it means reinstalling the app to completely remove everything.

  • After last security update script broke

    Hello,
I've written a script that processes Photoshop files into a single pdf and names the file based on our corporate standards. It then moves the file from the desktop into the appropriate folder. Both the pdf document and the folder that it's being moved to are assigned to variables. The pdf document is nameCheck and myFolder points to the correct folder. I've checked the veracity of the variables with a return statement after they've been assigned. However, the script hangs on this line. This didn't happen until I did the last batch of security updates.
move file named nameCheck to folder myFolder with replacing --This used to work (I've also tried this without "with replacing" and still it wouldn't work)
I wrote a small test script to see if moving files wasn't allowed (that would be foolish) and it works:
    tell application "Finder"
    make new file at desktop with properties {name:"myNewDoc"}
set docToMove to file named "myNewDoc" as alias
set toFolder to folder "PDFs" of desktop as alias
move file docToMove to folder toFolder
    end tell
    Any ideas? Anyone?
    Thanks!
    -Zoar

Is nameCheck the name of the file?, an alias pointing to the file?, or a string representing the path to the file?
If it's just a name then the script won't work because the Finder doesn't know where to find the file to move. Sure you might know the file is on the Desktop, but how does the Finder know that?
What if there where 2 files on disk with the same name - which one would it move?
In other words you need to be specific, like:
    set nameCheck to "somefile.pdf"
    tell application "Finder"
move (file nameCheck of desktop) to folder myFolder
    end tell
    or maybe:
    tell application "Finder"
set nameCheck to file "somefile.pdf" of desktop
move file nameCheck to folder myFolder
    end tell
It may be that earlier versions of AppleScript/Finder mistakenly assumed which file to moved based on its name only, but that is incorrect behavior.
If my guess isn't right, then you need to provide more detail, such as the actual code that fails along with any error messages that you get.

  • Can Send Mail, But Can't Receive Mail (Post Safari 3.1 & Security Update)

    Weird!
I was able to receive mail when I first came in today, but since updating this morning to Safari 3.1 and Security Update, unable to receive messages.
In "Activity Viewer", I can see Mail trying to get messages but stalls on "Fetching new mail...", "[INBOX - XXX] Updating cache, comparing notes on server...", and "Synchronizing with server... Traversing mailbox hierarchy..."
Not sure if it's related to updates, but it sure seems like it
The IT guys here at work are VERY PC-biased and tend to blame these type of things on "those Macs", so I could use your help!!!

Yeah, I'm having problems as well since the update. I get a message from the mail app that says
Mail was unable to verify the identity of this server, which has a certificate issued to "mail.mac.com". The error was:
An SSL error occurred while trying to read data from the server "mail.mac.com". Verify that this server supports SSL and that your account settings are correct.
You might be connecting to a computer that is pretending to be "mail.mac.com", and putting your confidential information at risk. Would you like to continue anyway?
    I've not encountered this before.

  • Security Update 2006-006

    sundance2548,
First of all, Welcome to Apple Discussions Forums!
You did not state if you Repaired Permissions using Disk Utility from your HD before and after downloading the update which is an important consideration if you had a problem post download.
If not, run Repair Permissions from your HD Disk Utility>First Aid tab>Repair Permissions and see if it helps.
Security updates can wreak havoc on apps such as Apple Mail and iChatAV (sorry I don't use Eudora so I can't address that) but "usually" only if one has not Repaired Permissions before and after the Software Update.
I had trouble with one Security Update and it was due to not Repairing Permissions.
I won't pretend to know the ins and outs of how Security Updates interact with the stated applications when installed but I know that if you are prudent and make sure to Repair Permissions (with any update before and after) you normally should have no problems.
That said, problems can also be caused by conflicting third party software. That is where I would look next if still no luck.

  • QUICKTIME 7.1.3 SECURITY UPDATE FOR WINDOWS? Where is it?

How do I get the security update (2007-001) for the WINDOWS version of QuickTime? Do I just download and install the standalone player again?
As an IT professional who is constantly trying to stick up for apple in a pro-Microsoft world, I find it ridiculous that there is no mention of how windows users can protect themselves from this security flaw, at: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304989
It only talks about the OSX version, and the updater in the windows quicktime player just tells me it's up to date with 7.1.3... but 7.1.3 is the only version affected by the security flaw!
    The bug:
    http://projects.info-pull.com/moab/MOAB-01-01-2007.html

The solution for Windows clients is un-acceptable. This is a critical security flaw that could result of remote code execution and possible system compromise.
We cannot sit back and expect thousands of enterprise users to manually go out and update QuickTime. Worse yet if they didn't enable the updater when they installed QuickTime.
A separate downloadable patch for QuickTime for Windows needs to be made available ASAP whereas it can be deployed via existing distribution methods just like we do all other "Critical" security updates.
When will a downloadable patch be available?
If not, our only recourse may be to force the un-install of QuickTime as an unmanageable product.

  • Security Update - Disk Utlity crashes, disk partitions won't mount

After I installed the original security update (2006-002) released the week of 3/13/06 I encountered the following problems:
    - Firewire startup disk did not show firewire icon.
    - Firewire startup disk did not mount with all partitions. Only the system partition mounts.
    - Cannot mount any drives or disk images.
    - Disk Utility crashes every time.
    - Spotlight returns results for a search but when choosing Show All nothing happens.
I really need to mount the second partition of my firewire startup disk as all my data is on it.
If I boot from my Mac mini's internal drive everything works fine. I should note that the internal drive of my mini has 10.4.2 installed. My firewire startup drive has 10.4.5 with the security update.
I installed security update 2006-002 using Software update and things went wrong.
I tried re-applying the 10.4.5 combo update to no avail. I installed the latest security update (2006-002 v 1.1) to no avail. I repaired disk permissions from the install DVD to no avail.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

To me that sounds like your data is not backed up there. Never install anything without first backing up. You may still be able to salvage information there using Prosoft Data Rescue:
    http://www.prosofteng.com/
    and another external hard disk.
As for the data on the other drive where you are having crashes, are you running any third party utilities like Norton Personal Firewall or others which may be impacted by a security update?

That version cannot be upgraded further if it's a 2G model. The 3G model can be upgraded to iOS 5.x.x. You can't have a 2G model because the maximum iOS version is 4.2.1.

  • Applications not responding apparently after Security Update 2007-009

Mail, iTunes, Skype, MSN Messenger, MainMenu, Emule, Safari and god know what else aren't responding after Security Update 2007-009.
    Hi,
I recently purchased a new phone that does not work with macs, so I bought an application from Feisar to make it work. The application isn't freeware, so I think it is very unlikely that it bogused my system. Anyway, I installed the software, but only afterwards noticed it didn't work for my phone model with the USb interface, only through bluetooth, which I don't have. Moreover, and, in my opinion, more importantly, I also downloaded and installed security update 2007-009. After the update, I mandatorily restarted OS X and instantly noticed Mail, iTunes, Safari, Skype and Messenger not working. I click on them on the dock, they bounce (usually once, but it has occured to be more) and nothing happens. I don't get the little arrow below the icon. I see the applications in the applications folder, so they are not missing. I searched and searched on the internet and, apparently it is, to say the least, herculeanly complicated to downgrade from a software update. I tried to repair permissions and it didn't work. I tried the apple hardware test and everything came out perfect. I restarted many times and the same keeps happening.
So I wasted half my day yesterday trying to fix this, looking into forums and trying to talk to people about it and there it absolutely no answer. Yesterday I installed the programs necessary to sync my phone in my wife's macbook and nothing bad happened. So I'm guessing it isn't about the phone plugins I installed. I've tried to download combo updates but they crash as soon as I try to install them - I even tried to install a 10.4.10 update.
This is the error message I get:
    Command: Installer
    Path: /Applications/Utilities/Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/Installer
    Parent: WindowServer [114]
    Version: 2.1.9 (104)

I put part of in on google to check if there was anybody discussing anything related and someone suggested - bizarrely enough - updating adobe reader. I did it just in case and, of course, it didn't work. I repaired permissions a million times already, I rebooted in safe mode, I scaned the computer with apple jack (which reapetedly said that I had a "fan failure!"), I verified the disk with diskutility - which showed nothing. I tried downloading an anti-virus (ClamXav), but I couldn't open it also, I trashed my prefs, I deleted all internet plugins, but still.... nothing.
The most likely line to follow here is the "fan failure" message in apple jack. I looked inside my g5 and all fans except for the one close to the Hard Drives aren't spining. I'm not sure this means they aren't functional or whether the temperature isn't high enough for it to be turned on. Temperature must be around 26-28 degrees Celsius today. There is nothing on the internet about that fan failure that's close enough to my case.
I'm about to quit and take it to the very expensive - yet reliable - authorized tech support apple has in Rio. Any ideas, anyone?

Maybe it is a security update thing! I have had similar troubles with my CS2 and other simple apps like TextEdit not opening, just doing that single bounce... I have tried EVERYTHING and now, after reinstalling my entire system, have lost access to my own user profile.
I'm assuming you have tried starting up with your original system install disk in the computer, while you turn it on, hold the option key, it will allow you to run another hardware check, as well as to do an archive install if it comes down to that.
good luck, please let me know if you find out something else that might be causing the problems... i've noticed that alot of mac threads have similar probs listed.
