Security updates aren't apparently installing
According to my Belarc Advisor report the following security updates are not installed:
APSB14-15 Adobe Acrobat security update for Acrobat 10.1.9.22
APSB14-15 Adobe Reader security update for Reader 11.0.6.70
APSB14-16 Adobe Flash Player security update for Flash Player 13.0.0.214 ActiveX 64-bit
APSB14-16 Adobe Flash Player security update for Flash Player 13.0.0.214 ActiveX 32-bit
I thought doing updates within my CS6 suite automatically updated such things. Why is this not so?
There are links provided to the Adobe website for such updates but I hesitate using them before knowing the answer from here first.
Thank you
Hello,
The latest version for the products mentioned are:
1. Acrobat 10.1.10
2. Reader 11.0.7
3. Flash Player 14.0.0.125
So, if you are already on the latest versions then you don't need to install the prior security patch as it is already inbuilt with latest patch.
Regards,
Anoop

The mail app on my Mac laptop will not open. This began happening after an upgrade during which "Security UPdate 2012-004" was installed. My mail app has a new icon, and I think i trashed the old program (trying to follow directions). Suggest a fix?

Security update 2011-003 cannot install
I've tried everything on multiple computer to install the Security update 2011-003. At first, it downloads, but it stalls during installation. Then I downloaded the install direct from Apple. It installed, but stalled saying it had 1 minute until completion. That lasted over an hour. I ran disk utility, then the direct install again and the same thing happened: installed until 1 minute until completion and stalls.
Anybody else with the problem and solutions?Exactly which version of Mac OS are you on? 10.6.?
And, which model Mac do you have?
The security update is for OS 10.6.7 only. Not sure if the new 2011 iMacs need the update or not. -
Security update 2008-007: not installing
I used 'software update' from the apple menu to download this security update of 31 MB yesterday.
It got downloaded and while installing (during shut down), there was an error message saying i need to contact the manufacturer.
Also in the window that asks to restart now or later - the enter/return button is not working for selection and it is working only while using the track pad.
next time when i use the software update, it does not start downloading (looks like the previous downloaded file is still in the buffer) and it straight goes to window asking for restart now or later.
and the same problem continues.
should i have change some setting?
also i tried to download the security update 2008-007 for client INTEL from apple downloads site (around 139 MB). this too indicated an error after downloading.
the last security update had changed the keyboard backlight set to off. i did not notice it initially.
later i noticed and wondered if the keyboard is damaged. after going thro the discussion forums, i went to the preferences and found the keyboard backlight not selected. after selecting it, it was okay.
any soultions please?Q8MacNewbie wrote:

Whoa - slow down there. That update is for Tiger. DO NOT attempt to use it with Leopard. You have to read the large print:

If you are remiss in applying the wrong updates, anything can happen and usually does.
Be very careful when doing things manually.
First, boot into Safe mode and at login screen select restart and let system reboot normally.
Down the CORRECT security update and install it.
I believe this is the one for you:

Security Update 2012-004 problems installing
Hi, I'm running 10.6.8 with the usual mac applications and since April I haven't been able to install the security update 2012-004 any ideas
What happens when you try? If you're doing this from Software Update, what about getting the standalone?

Updating the Security Update 2009 freezes when installing.
I don't update with the Software Updater anymore because it froze while updating the combo pack for OSX.4.1-11. I just use it to see what I need then I go to the Apple Support Downloads and update everything from there. Well now I'm trying to install the Security Update 2009 and it freezes right at the beginning of the install. I've zapped my pramm and have restarted my computer a number of times now and nothing works. I have a 450mhz dual processor G4 PPC with 512mb sdram running os 10.4.11. Does anyone know why it keeps freezing and if there is something I can do to stop it from freezing?
Oh yeah and I'm also trying to update to Java 8 and the page to download it from has a 404 error. Anyone know where else I can download Java 8 from, I'll do some more searching on google but if anyone can post a link that would be awesome. Ok n/m about the link I found it here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10246230

Certain steps appear to minimize the risk of an update producing problems.
Number one is to make sure you have a bootable clone backup of your computer in case you do need to back out of it again. This is the only guaranteed way of not having to worry about the results of an update.
Some like to boot from their installer discs or an external backup and verify (and if necessary repair) their internal drives as well as drive permissions. This is done with Disk Utility. You can verify a drive while booted from the same drive but sometimes this produces spurious errors. Repairing a drive (if necessary) has to be done while booted from another disk. Permissions repair can, and is probably best, done when booted from your internal drive.

[Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751]
You can also go to the step of booting into safe mode to do the install.

[What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392]
[Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107394]
I like to download the update onto my computer and install it from there rather than let Software Update do it. I know a few people who had problems with doing the update via software updater found a manual install to work.
Repair permissions again afterward.
It helps to only install one update at a time and to run the computer for a while to make sure it is behaving well.
The more cautious even like to unplug third party peripherals (see [comment by BDaqua|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9040746#9040746]).
Almost all of the above steps (except backup) have been questioned as to necessity because probably many people have done successful updates without doing them. I say they can't hurt, they can very likely do good (especially if your computer isn't regularly maintained), so why not do them to be safe.

Security update 2008-002 wont install
how does one delete the package so i can try downloading it again?
when i run software update, and select reboot, it tries to run the installer script and
it complains about the security certificate, and tells me to contact the software publisher
and then reboots
i cant think of anything that caused a problem other then maybe installing the latest
safari first. You can go to the Apple download site and download and install it manually
Here's the link:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/security_updates/
Be sure to select either the proper version for your computer.
The universal works on any computer.
Getting rid of the unwanted download is something else. I don't know where it is stored, but someone here will probably point it out to you and you can simply delete it after you install the downloaded version manually.
If you get the same error, then there is some other problem with your system. -
Why will Security Update 2013-004 not install on my Mac Mini
I tried to download the update but everytime it came back with "unexpected error has occurred. It has now disapeared from my updates list but the last time I attempted to download the file I got the same error message. How do I check to see if it really did the update?

How can I tell which Apple Security Updates are installed?
While troubleshooting a printer issue, I installed some 'Extra' printer profiles from my OS 10.6 Install DVD. After which, I got a dialog box from the Installer saying that I may have replaced some newer items with older ones, and it suggested I run the latest OS "Combo" installer. Which I did, even tho Software Update said I was up-to-date.
But apparently, when I ran the "Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1" -- it downgraded some of my Apple software to older versions. For example, I know for sure Safari was at 5.1.2 before I ran the Combo, and it's now at 5.0.5. Yet Software Update is not telling me about v.5.1.2, which it shows as already being installed (at a date prior to me running the Combo updater).
So my question is:
What other software might have been downgraded by the 10.6.8 Combo v1.1 -- and if Software Update thinks I running the current versions, how am I going to find out for sure?
Obviously, I can check version numbers of my installed Apple software like iTunes and Aperture against the latest updates available at Apple Downloads, but I don't know how to check on background files like Security Updates, Java, etc.
I am particularly concerned that I am running the latest Security Updates.
Thanking you in advance,
- gwsteve626 said:
"... There you will be able to see if a more recent version of Safari, etc. was replaced with an older version."
Not exactly. That screen shows my most recent Safari update was 5.1.2 on 12/16/11 -- then it shows the Mac OS X Update Combined was installed on 1/2/12. That's when my Safari got downgraded to 5.0.5, but that detail is missing from the Installed Updates preference pane.
It looks like once an update gets installed, Software Update remembers that -- but does not take the newer update off the list if an older version replaces it???
So, even though I see Security Update 2011-006 was installed on 10/21/11, I'm not sure if the OS Combo Update replaced any security items with older bits. Is there anything specific to security updates that I might be able to check?

How to install MSFT application security updates in cab file format using DISM
Hi,
I tried to install security updates for MS Office which are cab files like any other windows security updates cab file. It is giving an error called "file not found". But other windows security updates cab files are installing fine without any error.
I tried to install these updates manually using DISM on commandline. It is not installing. I even tried using pkgmgr.exe, but that is not working either. I looked at DISM logs which is saying it failed opening the cab file. I tried different other commandline
options of DISM to install this, but nothing else is suitable for a cab file install.
Does anyone know how to install a cab file for application security updates via DISM.exe or other MSFT commandline tools?
Thanks,
ANSA

How do I prevent Security Updates from overwriting (custom) PHP install?
Hi,
I've been forced into re-installing PHP from binaries after every Apple Security Update that upgrades PHP and I'm over it. Everytime Apple upgrades PHP, "their" compile overwrites mine and I lose my libraries. I have to completely wipe the Apple PHP install and re-compile. I've done this 3 or 4 times now in the past couple years...
Is there any way to force the Security Updates to retain the install of "my" libraries? What about the update installer(s)? Where are they?
12" PB 1.25 Mac OS X (10.3.9)An Update shouldn't affect PHP, this is a server side language that is stored on the server for the implamintation of Dynamic Web Pages.
Self-referentially short for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor, an open source, server-side, HTML embedded scripting language used to create dynamic Web pages.
In an HTML document, PHP script (similar syntax to that of Perl or C ) is enclosed within special PHP tags. Because PHP is embedded within tags, the author can jump between HTML and PHP (similar to ASP and Cold Fusion) instead of having to rely on heavy amounts of code to output HTML. And, because PHP is executed on the server, the client cannot view the PHP code.
PHP can perform any task that any CGI program can do, but its strength lies in its compatibility with many types of databases. Also, PHP can talk across networks using IMAP, SNMP, NNTP, POP3, or HTTP.
PHP was created sometime in 1994 by Rasmus Lerdorf. During mid 1997, PHP development entered the hands of other contributors. Two of them, Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans, rewrote the parser from scratch to create PHP version 3 (PHP3).

After installing Security Update 2010-006...
Hey guys,
After I run the Software Update and security update 2010-006 is installed,
the wifi service of my macbook is not working.
It cannon to any wifi network and also sometimes no network can be found.
What can I do?Cheong! wrote:

You might try resetting your connection settings using the steps listed in this message:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10695921&start=1
They're not guaranteed to solve the problem, but they'll only take a minute or so to try.
If those don't help, I'm not sure I have any other advice. -
Is Security Update 2007-007 OK to install?
Mac Pro Intel, 10.4.10 with current firmware updates.
Thought I'd better check here first to see if this security update is OK to install. Security Update 2007-007
Thanks in advance
CraigThanks both of you. I update a clone drive every couple of days or so, but still, any downtime because of a buggy update, or worse some stealth code embedded in the update, would drive me crazy. I'll wait on 10.5 because I want to make sure that my primary apps (like photoshop CS3) are fully tested. Like they say "the first one through the pass gts hit by the most arrows:-))
cheers

I saw a quick Firefox notice at the lower corner of my screen about security updates available or being installed so when I checked to see what they were, I found an installed update 3.6.7 on 7-20-2010, and the next one 3.6.8, said installed on 12-31-1969, the next one 3.6.8 says installed on 12-31-1969, and the last one 3.6.10 installed on 9-16-2010. I've clicked on the details link but nothing happens. Firefox has been acting a little strange lately (won't get out of Firefox when I click out of it unless I shut down my laptop, using 100% CPU and freezing so I have to shut down through Task Manager) can it be some kind of bug/glitch?
Firefox safe mode is meant for diagnostic purposes and not for permanent usage.
Possible suspects can be the BitDefender extensions (BitDefender QuickScan, BitDefender Antiphishing Toolbar) and plugin (BitDefender QuickScan Web Netscape Plugin)
You can also remove the Java Console extensions and disable the Java Quick Starter extension.<br />
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Java#Multiple_Java_Console_extensions
Disable the Java Quick Starter extension: Tools > Addons > Extensions
Control Panel > Java > Advanced tab > Miscellaneous >Java Quick Starter (disable)
See http://www.java.com/en/download/help/quickstarter.xml - What is Java Quick Starter (JQS)? What is the benefit of running JQS? - 6.0
If it does work correctly in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.<br />
