Security Updates Installation Order

Hi,
Is the order in which security updates are installed important when not using the Software Update application. I recently installed the 10.5.1 update as download from the Apple web site and then used Software Update to install the following:
"QuickTime" (7.4.1), "Front Row Update" (2.1.2), "iLife Support" (8.2), "iTunes" (7.6.1),"Remote Desktop Client" (3.2.1), "AirPort Utility" (5.3.1)
I then downloaded and installed security update 2007-009. Obviously this was released before some of the updates performed by Software Update. Am I correct in assuming that nothing in the security update will interfere with the downloads from Software Update?
Best Regards, Simon.

Do NOT install the Remote Desktop!
Once you have reached 10.5.2 you it will no longer be there. It was/is an error.
The very first thing to do is go to the Mac download page, get the 10.5.2 combo update and install that before installing anything else.
You can get that here:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1052comboupdate .html
AFter that the Remote Desktop update should no longer be offered.
I also install one update at a time. Some require reboots, some do not. I do not like to install two updates at the same time that each require a reboot. But that's just me.
Install OS related updates first.
Then install iTunes, etc one by one or all at once if you like. Just remember that if you install two or more updates at the same time and your system crashes, you never know which one did it.
Also, if you are running TM, make a backup before installing 10.5.2. Stuff does happen.
My experience is that when you are well prepared, nothing bad happens.

  • Security update installs but doesn't reboot system

After installing both Security Update 1.0 and 1.1 the system just sits there on a blue screen with the spinning circle. I've let it sit for over an hour, but end up doing a hard reset. After that everything is fine, no weird restart/login issues and I can restart between boot camp just fine. Oh and other updates that require a restart work just fine.
Any ideas as to why the security updates won't restart my system?
    Thanks,

  • Security Update 2014-002, Safari update issues

I have tested the latest 10.9.2 security updates on a client running DFX and it appears to completely break OS X. Our base image has proven faultless and unmodified (thanks to DFX) over 70+ clients for about a month.
Post security update installation, unable to login with error: Unapproved caller -SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple software. If a user is already logged in, any user initiated process that calls on PID 0 seems to result in the same error message.
This update seems to also kill Firefox (Latest version) with no returned error, just never seems to request proxy authentication.
I am too scared to test this on an unfrozen client (preventing me from utilising verbose boot) as I suspect it would entail a re-image. Below is the console log when attempting to use user fast switch. From what I can see, there appears to be some sort of strange permissions error but I am not really sure, anyone else suffering from this issue or have any solutions?

I'd expect to need to re-image here, based on what you're describing.   Load your current image somewhere, load the patch, unlock it, and see what you can get.   Usual general suggestion is a fairly thin image (usually "just" OS X), and then load up what you need on the clients via Munki or such, if you're not already following this general approach.  This makes re-generating images and updating hunks easier.
I've had issues with fast user switching and network users, and had to disable that for specific environments.  Not sure what you're up to here, though.

  • Security update 2008-005 hangs during install

after the download, during install, the security update installer seems to hang after what seems like a 10% progress (still in configuring install phase).
i've tried waiting for upto 10 minutes with no luck. could someone help?

Manually download the update from Apple and update from there.

  • Apps crashing after latest Security Update

Word, TextEdit and Adobe Reader have been crashing since installing the latest Security Update 2005-009. Most of the time, it's when I try to print. I've tossed the .plist of Word, but it hasn't helped.
Everything was hunky dory before the latest Security Update installation.
Are there other things I should try to gain back stability?
    Thanks!

    The following may help:
Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.0.6 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    In addition to the above:

If the problem is limited to only printing, try deleting your existing printers and reinstalling them.

  • Best Practice for Updating Administrative Installation Point for Reader 9.4.1 Security Update?

I deployed adobe reader 9.4 using an administrative installation point with group policy when it was released. This deployment included a transform file.  It's now time to update reader with the 9.4.1 security msp.
My question is, can I simply patch the existing AIP in place with the 9.4.1 security update and redeploy it, or do I need to create a brand new AIP and GPO?
Any help in answering this would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't update your AIP in place. I end up keeping multiple AIPs on hand. Each time a security update comes out I make a copy and apply the updates to that. One reason is this: when creating the AIPs, you need to apply the MSPs in the correct  order; you cannot simply apply a new MSP to the previous AIP.
Adobe's support patch order is documented here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/498/cpsid_49880.html.
That link covers Adode  Acrobat and Reader, versions 7.x through 9.x. A quarterly update MSP can  only be applied to the previous quarterly. Should Adobe Reader 9.4.2  come out tomorrow as a quarterly update, you will not be able to apply it to  the 9.4.1 AIP; you must apply it to the previous quarterly AIP - 9.4.0. At a minimum I keep the previous 2 or 3 quarterly AIPs around, as well as the MSPs to update them. The only time I delete my old AIPs is when I am 1000% certain they are not longer needed.
Also, when Adobe's developers author the MSPs they don't include the correct metadata entries for in place upgrades of AIPs - any AIP based on the original 9.4.0 MSI will not in-place upgrade any installtion that is based on the 9.4.0 MSI and AIP - you must uninstall Adobe Reader, then re-install. This deficiency affects all versions of Adobe Reader 7.x through 9.x. Oddly, Adobe Acrobat AIPs will correctly in-place upgrade.
Ultimately, the in-place upgrade issue and the patch order requirements are why I say to make a copy, then update and deploy the copy.
    As for creating the AIPs:
This is what my directory structure looks like for my Reader AIPs:
    F:\Applications\Adobe\Reader\9.3.0
    F:\Applications\Adobe\Reader\9.3.1
    F:\Applications\Adobe\Reader\9.3.2
    F:\Applications\Adobe\Reader\9.3.3
    F:\Applications\Adobe\Reader\9.3.4
    F:\Applications\Adobe\Reader\9.4.0
    F:\Applications\Adobe\Reader\9.4.1
    The 9.4.0 -> 9.4.1 MSP is F:\Applications\Adobe\Reader\AdbeRdrUpd941_all_incr.msp
When I created my 9.4.1 AIP, I entered these at a cmd.exe prompt - if you don't have robocopy on your machine you can get it from the Server 2003 Resouce Kit:
    F:
    cd \Applications\Adobe\Reader\
    robocopy /s /e 9.4.0 9.4.1
    cd 9.4.1
    rename AdbeRdr940_en_US.msi AdbeRdr941_en_US.msi
    msiexec /a AdbeRdr941_en_US.msi /update F:\Applications\Adobe\Reader\AdbeRdrUpd941_all_incr.msp /qb

  • Installation of Security Update fails

    Hello,
I have problems with installing Security updates on my Mac OS X(10.4.11). All the Security Updates versions from 2007 and also 2008-001 were successfully installed. If I try to install any security update after 2008-001, the computer gives me this message: 'There were errors during the installation' but it doesn't specify what these errors consist of. I run Disk Utility/Repair permissions but with no success. I don't know what is the problem with my computer. I am not an expert of Mac, I am just an user. I would appreciate a lot if someone can give me an useful suggestion.
I have also another problem: my computer is doing a backup every day. Once the backup is finished a message comes out: '1 size error detected during the backup'.
Can these two errors be connected? I have no problems of space by the way.
    Thanks a lot!

Hi MaunaKea, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

Disable anti virus softwrare if installed
Check firewall options in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall > Firewall Options
    Make sure Gatekeeper is enabled
Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy then select the General tab.
Make sure either Mac App Store or Mac App Store and identified developers is selected. If that area is grayed out, click the padlock icon to proceed.

I received a pop up regarding security certificates when opening a PDF document today.  Is it safe to say "yes" to the installation of the security updates?

  • Installer unable to validate security update- help please

i keep getting installer unable to install...security updates 2010-03/quicktime updates and so on. Why is this happening and how can i fix it. I have tried Onyx and clean my mac to try and clean up files in hopes it will randomly update and fix. im getting frustrated right now and I need some advise and direction. Onyx says my volume is ok.

Move all the files that have softwareupdate in their title out of your user's /Library/Preferences/ and ByHost subfolder, restart, and try again. If that doesn't do it, then boot with your Leopard install disk and reinstall it, selecting the Archive & Install, saving user and network settings, option. If that fixes the issue, run Software Update and bring the OS back up to 10.5.8. If not, then I'm out of ideas.

  • My Mac 10.7.5 won't shut down after new software (security update 2013-003) installation-- hangs at grey screen with "software update" at top.  It also intermittently goes to sleep without my asking.  What to do?

My Mac 10.7.5 won't shut down after a new software installation (Security Update 2013-003).  It just hangs at a grey screen with "Software Update" at the top.  I have to force quit, then restart-- but the new software hasn't installed.
My Mac also intermittently goes into Sleep mode, repeatedly, unprompted by me.  I suspect a connection between these two problems.
I have tried deleting the /Library/Updates folder.  It hasn't helped.  The update still won't install, and my Mac won't shut down without my forcing the quit.
    Help please!

Hi, I've just come accross the same problem... did you manage to get a resolution??
    Cheers, Chris.

  • What do I do when installing a mac security update freezes during the installation process?

Got an update notice the other day that a critical security update needed to be done right away. The update downloaded and then 90% through the installation it all froze. I can't do anything with the screen. Anyone out there have a suggestion?

As stevejobsfan0123 explained perfectly, Classic apps only works with Mac OS X 10.4 or older, so it's not possible to run it on your Mac, but there's another problem: MathCAD 15 isn't compatible with OS X, so you will have to buy the Windows version and install Windows on Boot Camp > http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp

  • Wireless keyboard problem after installation of security update

I have an Apple wireless keyboard and wireless mouse that have been working fine up until installation of the latest security update. The mouse still works, but the keyboard doesn't. I'm getting a dialog box that tells me the computer found the keyboard and to enter a "passkey" which is something I've never seen before with the keyboard. It provides me with a numerical passkey. I enter the passkey, but it says there is an error, to make sure my keyboard is discoverable, and to try again. Every time I try, I get the same results. I've repaired permissions and changed the batteries in the keyboard.
I'm looking for some help as to what else I can do. Thanks in advance.

Changed the firewall setting for Thunderbird in Norton's Internet Security from "Auto" to Allow" and this fixed the problem.
I had updated to a new version of Norton's on 3/11/14. Don't know why the problem did not manifest itself until the Thunderbird security update installed on 3/18/14..
Very happy it is now fixed!!! Thanks!!!
