See Closed Caption but No Picture

Apple TV 1080p HD - 60Hz
Apple TV Software 5.0 (4099)
Model MD199LL/A
Worked great until yesterday.  Suddenly there is no picture when I try to replay my TV episodes of "Merlin" purchased a week ago.  CC is visible and sound is fine.  None fo the Merlin episodes play, including the ones we watched last week.
All other feartures (Netflix, movie previews, other non-Merlin episodes etc) show video just fine.
What's up?

You did not provide any information on how far you've gone in your research of CC in principal, so here is what it is in a nutshell.
From Flash standpoint there are two distinct approaches.
1. CC can be embedded into video as cue points. You don't have to do it manually. Adobe video encoder (and other encoders) allow importing xml files at time of encoding. These XML files require certain formatting with time stamps. When imported, cue points are inserted automatically.
2. There are several established CC text file formats including xml files and flat delimited files. There is nothing special about this files - they have start times, end times, and CC text. The only advantage of using one of these formats is that the majority of tools that allow typing CC as one watches video save the work in one of these formats.
On the Flash/programming side, except for cue points, there is no native mechanism to link/sync any data with anything. This means that logic has to be written from scratch based on required use cases. It is mostly loading xml/text file --> parsing it --> listening to video playback's time --> displaying text at the moments specified in these files.
Writing these kind of functionality is a very easy task. The main challenge is to transcribe audio to get CC text and time these text blocks properly. It is time consuming as well as expensive if you don't do it yourself, which is the main reason people and even big companies ditch the idea of implementing CC. In other words, it is a total tedious manual labor unless one has speech recognition software.

  • Can't see closed captions

    I followed the tutorial for making subtitles in Adobe Premiere CC. The problem is that I can see the titles in the closed captions tab, but it isn't visible in the program monitor, also after enabling closed captioning display.

    What type of caption stream. If you're not sure, check the top of the Captions panel.
    And what are Standard and Stream set to in the Program Monitor's Closed Captioning Settings dialog (accessed by clicking the wrench icon, then Closed Captioning Display>Settings...)?

  • Cannot see Closed Caption options

    Hi all,
    I'm trying to create captions. I watched a tutorial on Adobe's website, but I don't see any of the options that I need (eg I don't have an option for a Captions window, and when I click 'New Item' I don't see an option to create a new caption). I'm a newbie so I'm sure it's something obvious I'm doing wrong - any help much appreciated.

    Using CS6 version 6.0.3 on PC.

    In CS6, caption support is limited to attaching a caption source to a timeline. You can see the captions in the Program Monitor, but you cannot edit them in any way through Premiere.
    The features you're talking about were introduced in Premiere Pro CC.

  • I can see the thumbnail, but the picture isn't there!!!

    Hi! I need some help!!!
    I have been having issues with my camera on my iPhone 4S. I'll take a picture, it'll show up as a thumbnail, but when it's enlarged, the picture is just blank-white. I thought maybe my app was just acting up, but I uploaded the pictures onto Facebook, and they were still blank! I don't know what's going on!! Please, help!
    Also! I just did an update to my OS today... could that have something to do with it?

    I am having the same problem, just started
    today, I have also just updated to 7.0.4.
    It does not do it all the time, but the ones that
    have done it have all been when I don't have
    a great signal, but that could be a coincidence.
    I hope somebody has an idea on this,
    One other thing, if I click on edit while looking at
    the white empty photo, I can then see it.

  • TS5150 Is there any way to view movies with subtitles but without closed captioning? I can get both or neither, but not subtitles only.

    Just in the last year I have had problems with a lot of foreign language films where I can have both subtitles and closed captioning or neither. (I'm very fortunate not to require closed captioning, but I speak only English and Spanish, so I often need subtitles.) I am in my 50s and have been a huge foreign film fan since college, but I don't remember ever having this problem until very recently. Tech support chats with Netflix and AppleCare calls in re iTunes/AppleTV have not provided any answers. The current state of the art seems a step backwards from what never used to be a problem. I'd be interested in knowing if anyone else has had this issue. A search of "subtitles" brought 0 responses, so I have to assume I'm the first person to have asked about it.

    You used the data.  Verizon can not see what it was sued for.  However your phone can see whats apps used the data.  go to settings-data usage- there will be a place that says data usage cycle.  line the dates up with your cycle.  then there will be a bar graph below that   extend bother white bars one all the way to the left and one all the way to the right.  after those are extended below that will be a list of apps,  there should be one that used over 2 gb and that will show you what app used that data in her purse

  • Closed Captioned on Apple TV

    Good morning, I have just recently installed my apple tv. I have an a sony amplifier and have directv and a blue ray player conected to my samsung tv. I have been able to use the option of closed caption in my directv biut not in my apple tv. I have gone to settings and changed the subtitles and closed caption but the letters do not appear on the screen. Any suggestions ?
    Thank you

    Before you download a movie/show make sure you see the CC icon on the description. If it doesn't have it (most movies still don't, unless they are foreign language) then you are out of luck. If you know the file does have CC but can't see it, hold down the play button during playback to see the available options.

  • How can I use closed captioning with Netflix movies?

    Any help from the community on how to be able to see closed captioning on Netflix movies; works with movies from iTunes?

    Hm, Id really like to figure this out also. It bothers me to see my laptop screen out of the corner of my eye using my 30in. Its kind of stupid but, still bothers me.
    edit: That was way to easy. Just close the laptop and let the bluetooth mouse wake it back up. I had tried it once before and it didnt work. Maybe I was just to impatient to wait the extra 10 secs.

  • Help with closed captioning

    Does anyone know how to correct the following issue: the
    closed captioning works the first time you play the slide. However,
    if I return to the slide and replay it, the close captioning no
    longer appears. Any ideas?

    Welcome to our community, mkovner08
    When you say the Closed Captioning no longer appears, do you
    mean to say that the area where it would appear no longer has the
    highlighted section? Or is the section visible, but the Closed
    Captioning text refuses to be presented on the section as it
    normally is?
    I've tested here on my own PC and it seems to work with no
    issue. I can play a slide over and over and see Closed Captioning.
    Perhaps try restarting Captivate or clearing the Temp files and
    rebooting the PC?
    Cheers... Rick

  • HT4613 Is it normal that closed captions do not show in the trailers and other promos, even if they are present in the movie?  I don't want to pay to rent a movie that supposedly has CC if it doesn't show up on the samples.

    I want to rent some iTunes movies with closed captions, but in order to confirm that the CCs work, tried watching the trailers first.  I have CCs enabled on the iPod touch, but no captions showed up on the trailers or promos.  Is this normal?  Can I be sure that if a movie is marked with CCs, that they will be there if I rent it?  Thanks.

    Hi Karen
    Unfortunately you will likely end up implementing either a totally manual system (meaning you just add a line at the top of your topic with your breadcrumb trail as you wish to display it, then link as needed) or you will have to resort to some third party solution that isn't part of RoboHelp's features.
    You might also take a moment and suggest to the RoboHelp development team that we need some flexibility with this aspect. (Link is in my sig)
    Cheers... Rick

  • Can you do Closed Captioning on FCP HD

    I have been using FCP to create a few TV programs and need to create closed captioning, but I can't seem to figure out if I can use FCP to generate closed captioning.
    Anyone know how to create closed captioning in a FCP environment?
    Thanks,
    Wil

    Wai a second. So my clients won't know the difference between subtitling and the closted captioning? Does subtitling run on line 21 as well?
    <
    Well, I've never met your clients but 90% of mine have no clue.
    Subtitling is permanently burned into the image. Could be another language but could be the native or local language written out for the hard of hearing or to make poor audio intelligible.
    Captioning (open/closed) is user-activated at the playback device. All TVs have CC switchable display. But there are several flavors of captioning including multiple language encoding.

  • Closed Caption options do not work while you using Premiere 7.2.2 in Mavericks 10.9.3

    I cannot view/edit closed captioning (Tabs, Sequences, etc) files (QT DVCPROHD) that have Captioning attached using Maccaption. I'm using Premiere CC 7.2.2 on Mavericks 10.9.3.
    Another editor can view and edit captioning in another bay on Premiere CC 7.2.1 on Mountain Lion 10.8.5. Is there a new bug?

    Here are some other things to try, when you don't see closed captions in PPRO:
    -- Check to see if the Monitors in PPRO are set to the right caption standard
    -- Quit project and app. Toss any .prmdc files from Users:<User Name>: Library: Application Support: Adobe: Common:Media Cache Files
        Relaunch PPRO and reopen project
    Or when all else fails:
    -- Go to the source file, rename the embeded caption name
        Reimport the closed caption embedded file with the new name

  • How to set closed captioning to turn 'on' as default setting?

    Does anyone know how to set the closed captioning so that
    this feature is turned "on" as the default when people view the
    finished product? As it stands right now, users must select the
    "cc" button on the "control pad" to turn on closed captioning, but
    I want it to automatically appear.

    Hi again
    All you should have to do is to edit the first slide in
    Captivate. Click Insert > Animation and point at the .SWF file.
    Once you have done this, publish your project again and your Closed
    Captions should display automagickally.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Netflix and Closed Captioning

    Is there a way to turn on Closed Captioning in Netflix when using the AppleTV? I have a PS3 that I use for Hulu Plus, but I use my AppleTV for Netflix. The PS3 has the option of turning on Closed Captioning, but I can't find any such option for the AppleTV. If there is one, can you point me to it? Not the closed Captioning for Apple's rentals. I really don't want to use the PS3 for Netflix, but I feel I almost have to because of this issue.

    To turn on CC and subtitles:
    Go to Settings -> Audio & Video -> Subtitle Language to turn off or select the language of choice for subtitles
    In Audio & Video -> Closed Captioning to turn on or off CC.
    Most movies in the Apple store do not have CC. All movies in Netflix do not have CC or subtitles on the ATV2 but only on the PC/Mac and one of the game consoles I read have an add-on to get it to work. I have heard nothing on when the CC or subtitles will be ported to the ATV2.
    Hope that helps

  • Captivate 7 and adding Closed Captioning to my training *No Video just Voice Overs*

    Afternoon Adobe Community,
    I want to pose a question to all you experts out there on an easy way to display text from the slide notes as a form of closed captioning for my Voice Overs... I am aware that with video it has the functionality to add closed captioning but was hoping for a viable option to do this for pre-recorded audio that I have the transcript in the slide notes.
    This may not be possible but figured I would give it a shot.
    Thanks!

    Hi there,
      To convert Slide notes as closed captions, Please check the 'Audio CC' checkbox present in the slide notes panel (Audio should be present in the slide )
    This will convert all the marked Slide notes as closed captions automatically. You can synch the converted closed captions with audio from the Edit>Audio>Closed captions dialog.
    Thanks,
    Nimmy Sukumaran.

  • Closed Captions - issue with forcing Caption Change

    Hi,
    I am trying to adjust the position of the closed caption based on the flv player's skinAutoHide property:, i.e.: when I mouse out on the flv, the skin is hidden and I'd like to set y position of the closed caption to the bottom of the screen. When I mouse over the flv, the skin is shown and I'd like to display the closed cation on top of the player skin.
    The code I have works, but I don't know how to call my onCaptionChange function without the caption changing, i.e.: I'd like to call it on the Mouse Event, but then of course,  var tf:* would be undefined. Thanks for any help, I'm a wee bit stuck on this one.
    Cheers,
    ~Chipleh
    var my_FLVPlybkcap = new FLVPlaybackCaptioning();
    my_FLVPlybkcap.addEventListener(CaptionChangeEvent.CAPTION_CHANGE, onCaptionChange);
    function onCaptionChange(pEvent : *) : void
        var tf:* = pEvent.target.captionTarget;
        tf.name = "tf";
        setAutoLayout();
        if(alignCCToBottomFlag == true)
            //tfX = tf.x;
            tfY = 400;//tf.y;
            //my_FLVPlybkcap.autoLayout = true;
            trace("alignCCToBottomFlag = " + alignCCToBottomFlag);
            //newYPos = Number(440 - tf.height);
            //my_FLVPlybkcap.showCaptions = false;
        else
            trace("alignCCToBottomFlag = " + alignCCToBottomFlag);
            newYPos = Number(390 - tf.height);
            //tfX = tf.x;
            //tfY = 300//tf.y;
            //my_FLVPlybkcap.autoLayout = false;
            //tf.y = tfY;//newYPos;//my_FLVPlybkcap.height; // position of choice
        tf.y = newYPos;//my_FLVPlybkcap.height; // position of choice
        var rect:Shape = new Shape();
        rect.graphics.lineStyle(.1, 0x333333, 1); //Last arg is the alpha
        rect.graphics.beginFill(0xffffff, .33); //Last arg is the alpha
        rect.graphics.drawRect(tf.x, tf.y + 5, tf.width, tf.height);
        rect.graphics.endFill();
        rect.name = "_rect";
        addChild(rect);
        tf.mask = rect;
        tfWidth = tf.width;
        tfHeight = tf.height;
        tfX = tf.x;
        tfY = tf.y;

    So, the answer was not being able to properly target the text field of the closed caption, but I was able to figure out how to refernece the cc text field:
    var newYPos:Number = 100;
        my_FLVPlybkcap.captionTarget.y = newYPos;
    Anyways, thanks to the forum for being my visual sounding board
    Hope this helps out someone else evenetually,
    ~Chipleh
