See file size in iTunes?

Is there any way to see the file size of an item (movie, tv show, audiobook...) in iTunes before purchasing it? Example: I might not want to purchase this audiobook or movie because it will consume half the memory of my Nano so I will pick these other, smaller file sized items.

Thanks for trying to help. I'd worked that out, I was trying to download a film and it said I didn't have enough space to download, and that I should mange the space using settings. But iTunes doesn't seem to tell me how big the film is so I know how much free space I need. It does with apps, seems a simple thing that appears to be missing, unless of course I'm missing something.

There is a guy with 170,000 songs. There may be even bigger libraries out there.

  • Seeing File Size in Finder

I can find out the size of a garageband file by using getinfo. This of course is relatively tedious. How do I see the sizes of gargareband files in Finder?

Thanks for the response. I've tried that. Here is what I get:

  • File sizes in iTunes are still in Mebibytes not Megabytes

The file sizes displayed in the "Size" column, and in the "Status Bar" at the bottom if more than one track is selected, are still showing Mebibytes, whereas the Finder displays file sizes in Megabytes ever since Snow Leopard was introduced in August, 2009.
If you insist on display Mebibytes then you should use the correct abbreviation of "MiB" (not MB) after the size figure to save confusion.  Or you could follow Donald Knuth's proposal and use the MMB suffix.
It would be more consistent to mimic the changes to Finder and correct this.   Otherwise users might get confused when the Finder tells them they have enough space on a Memory Stick or external disk drive to copy some selected track(s) but when they try to do so then the copy doesn't fit.  For instance, Finder says the destination has 21.0 MB available, iTunes says the selected track is 20.1 MB, and the copy fails because it is really 20.1 MiB which is actually 21.077 MB.
The best way is to just alter iTunes to display true Megabytes (1,000,000 bytes).  If it was a good idea for Finder then it's a good idea for iTunes, even if it is 5 years late.

    Pete,
As I am sure you know, it is quite common in all kinds of computing to refer to Mebibytes as Megabytes.  You are correct that this is not quite correct, but the difference is small and people are used to it.  The Finder point is interesting, but around 85% of iTunes installations run on Windows.
However, you can make your suggestion known directly to Apple via the iTunes Feedback page:

  • How do I see file sizes of songs?

    2 questions actually.
1st. How do I analyze my iTunes library to see which song files take up the most space?  Is there a best practice for doing this?  Is it through iTunes?  Or through the Finer?  Please advise.
2nd. How do I have 2 formats of a song in my library, i.e. an aiff file in iTunes, which always only stays on my computer, and an Apple Lossless version of the same song/track which I can sync to my iPod Touch?  Is there something more flexible than the File-->Create New Version-->Create mp3?  I don't want mp3, that resolution is too low.  I would like to have Apple Lossless.
    Running iTunes 11.1.3
    Thanks!

    Hi,
In song view, go to menu > view > view options and select bit rate, file type and size.
In preferences, you can change import settings to Apple lossless. When you use file > create new version you can now can now convert from aiff to lossless.
Create playlist based of file type being lossless.

  • How to read music file size?

I have the third generation iPad. I've sync'd (via iTunes of course) a CD album in Apple Lossless and another CD album in AIFF. Most other audio that have already been sync'd is in MP3 format.
So how can I see the file size of each song in the iPad?

Well that's how to see the file size in iTunes. But I'm concerned (suspicious actually) that there's some background modification or something after getting sync'd with the iPad.
So I'm curious about how to see the file size of each song IN THE iPAD directly.
    Or not possible?

  • How can I display file size in Finder

    Hi folks,
I am trying to figure out where 40GB of data is hiding. I would like to see file sizes in the Finder window associated with my folders in Mountain Lion 10.8.2..  I'm having, what seems to me, a strange problem. When I 'Get Info' on my Hard Drive, the disc space left is only 40GB out of 120GB (ie used being 80GB). My confusion is that when I painstakingly go through the files, I can only account for 48 GB with 'Get Info' on each folder. This is a rather combersome process and I am hoping there is a work around for viewing the file sizes within Finder and not having to open 'Get Info' on each and every folder like I have been.
    I have a MacAir 13 inch 2011
    Thanks!

Thanks for your time and suggestions, dominic23.
I looked through both links and sadly, none of these suggestions have worked. I have tried many on my own since posting trying to figure out why the volume is being doubled on my hard drive. I've deleted log files, and done a sweep with Onyx to no avail. Strangely, the option of seeing the volumes under 'About this Mac' and 'System' does not have a listing for storage. Weird. I am the only user/administrator on this computer and I don't have shared files.
    I'm just stumped.

  • Crazy File Sizes - Help!

    Hello,
I have a multi-part question about multi-page PDFs.  Two things are happening to me quite a lot with Acrobat and PDF creation, and I need some help figuring out what's going on.
    Thing 1:
I will receive a bunch of scanned music, each page scanned separately as a separate PDF ... and each one sent in its own separate email, resulting in 30-40 emails at a time ... from another user.  Each PDF page that gets sent to me tends to be somewhere around 500K.  My task is to use Acrobat to combine the incoming scans into a multi-page PDF.  The actual creation of the multi-part PDF is no problem.  Getting Started > Combine Files into PDF is a straightforward move, and that's what I do.  But the resulting multi-page PDF is HUGE.  I've tried optimizing, I've tried saving it as a Small PDF ... neither of those things do much at all.  I'm seeing file sizes around 5,000K by the time I'm done with an average-sized multi-page instrumental part (about 5-6 pages of music).
A big file size isn't necessarily a big deal, but I have to distribute these multi-pagers via email (that is the only electronic format that doesn't feel like alien technology to the people on the distribution list) and sending these big files in emails tends to be problematic.  Slow downloads, file size limits exceeded, etc. ... this big file size thing is really annoying.
I suspect the massive file size is caused by how the initial user scanned in the pages of music, but I can't control what the initial user does; I just have to work with what arrives.  Is there any way that I can fix this?
    Thing 2:
I noticed that when I used the basic set-up at Fedex/Kinkos and, using a scanner and Acrobat, scanned 8.5 x 11 copies of some music as a black and white document, combining my scans into one PDF as I went and optimizing them, a file that would have been around 6,000 K coming from the other initial user and being paged together by me ended up being 568 K using this method.
When I used my camera as a impromptu scanner and used the CamScan application to take a picture of a document and save it as a PDF, I was getting pretty ridiculous file sizes, 400-500 K a page.  Sam issue as with the PDFs coming from the initial user.
What is going on?  Is there something in the scanning method that affects how big the file is?  Is a flatbed scanner and Acrobat the only way to get small PDF sizes?
Thanks for any help you can provide...

yes it dus thanx so much.. man i dont no y i didnt see that in the first place :p i must be blind

  • File size reported reported differently

Can someone help me explain why this file size is reported differently depending whether you list file or folder properties:
This is an Azure Basic_A1 VM. Drive E: is standard VHD attached to the VM (Page Block Storage).
This is an active/open file that is currently being written to, and is growing in size.
How is it that file size is reported as 8 GB if you query the folder, and 24 GB if you query the file?

Powershell: Learn it before it's an emergency http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/scriptcenter/powershell.aspx http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/scriptcenter/dd793612.aspx

I ran this script for the last 8 or so hours out of this 19 hour upload:
    $Folder = "e:\Backups\Sam Client\To Azure Page Block Repository"
    $Log = "c:\Sandbox\Upload4.csv"
    Write-Output '"FileQuery","FolderQuery","Time"' | Out-File $Log
    Do {
    $a = (dir "$Folder\To Azure Page Block Repository2014-09-23T051450.vbk").length/1GB
    $b = (dir $Folder)[1].length/1GB
    cls
Write-Host "File size reported from file list: $('{0:N2}' -f $a) GB" -ForegroundColor Green
Write-Host "File size reported from folder list: $('{0:N2}' -f $b) GB" -ForegroundColor Yellow
    dir $Folder | FT -AutoSize
    Write-Output """$a"",""$b"",""$(Get-Date -Format 'hh:mm:ss tt')""" | Out-File $Log -Append
    Start-Sleep -Seconds 10
    } while ($a -ne $b)
That collected over 3,000 sampling points that are 10 seconds apart. I then graphed that data:
The vertical axis is file size in GB, the horizontal axis is time (not directly - it's sampling points)
And you can see file size as reported by folder query lags behind file size as reported by file query. The amount of lag was upwards of 90GB at its highest point. And it took anywhere from roughly 5 minutes to 3 hours for 1 indicator to catch up with the
    other.
The question is why these two sets of numbers are different? Is there caching going on somewhere? Is one indicator accounting for all file blocks while the other is accounting for committed blocks only? Can someone from Microsoft shed some light on this?
This is important to know to be able to plan disk space requirements when attempting to use Azure as backup target with large data sets regardless of the software used.

  • How to tell file size in Elements 9 for Mac

I'm new to Mac.  I've used Elements for many years.  When I click on File>open and browse my image icons in the "finder" folder (no, I don't use iPhoto), I can't see file size info.  In Windows, I used to be able to hover my cursor over an image icon and read the file size info.  This doesn't work in Mac.  When I go the Finder>preferences and set image info for icons, the file's size appears in a different color beneath each icon, which is great.  But when I try to browse finder from the Open file menu in Editor, the file size is gone.  How do I fix this?  I mean if I have three images of the same subject, but different sizes, how can I tell which is which?
    Thanks for your help!

Yes, this is something that has annoyed everyone ever since OS X started (you could do it in OS 9). One workaround is to use column view. Once you choose an image you will see all the data about it in the righthand column:

  • How do I find out how big a file size is in itunes before I buy it?

I'm trying to work out how many of the tv episodes in a series I can actually fit on my iphone as i'm running out of space but can't seem to find anywhere in itunes telling me how big either the whole download is or individual episodes. Any help greatly appreciated!

Thank you for replying I cant see it though (I must be being stupid!!)

  • File sizes different on iPhone compared to iTunes

    Hi everyone,
After re-syncing my phone the file sizes compared to what was showing on the colored bar at the bottom of iPhone tab in iTunes is much different than the actual sizes of the files synced onto my phone. Basically I added all of the file sizes of my apps on my phone with a calculator and got 1.05gbs but highlighting the Apps section on the colored bar it shows 3.44gbs(see photo). My music adds up to 3.63gbs but shows 4.73gbs on the colored bar.
Now I can understand adding lyrics, album art & whatnot may change the music file size but I can't see how profiles, scores on games or whatever can add an additional 2.4gbs to my apps. Any idea on what's up with this?

I have found the iTunes "Memory Bar" to be an estimate and also not too sure it is always the same picture-in-time as the iPhone data.  Do you have (forgive the pun) and Apples to Apples comparison of each App you are counting?  I share an Apple ID and iTunes with my granddaughter and as such I don't actually keep all the Apps on my iPhone that show up in iTunes.

  • Setting in itunes for sync file size/format

I heard there was a setting in itunes the would allow you to pick a smaller files size/format at the time of syncing to ypour ipod so during the sync the files would be compressed. Is this true. My cd collection is ripped and saved in lossless and i was thinking of syncing at 320kbps to see if i noticed a difference. It would be nice if this was ture so i can save all my cds at lossless and just compress when i sync if i want.
    Thanks!!!

So that will compress all the larger files on the ipod to 128kbps ACC....then i can load more lossless till memory is full again and, do that again, and it will compress those new larger files to 128kbps AAC????
Also, can you pick another file size. I already know i loath the sound quality of 128. I was hoping to do something like this but choose 320
