Seeing a camera mounting on the desktop

Hi, I've shot a 40 min video with a nikon coolpix but to import it, I've to go through Iphoto. The problem is that the file seems too long to be improted in Iphoto. I'd like to know how to do to see the camera mounting on the desktop in order to get directly from it the avi file.
May be you have another way to do it without opening Iphoto.
Thanx
Steve

As iBod pointed out Image Capture preferences determines what happens when you attach a camera to your Mac. Just like Safari determines your default browser.
I like to download my camera to a new desktop folder using image capture. I can then open iPhoto and select what I want to go to iPhoto. I keep the original download folders in a separate folder in Pictures to backup.

  • About cameras not mounting on the desktop in Tiger (10.4.3)

Information for those here who have problems with their cameras or chip readers no longer mounting on the desktop.
This has happened here too, with a Nikon D50 connected to an iMac G5 iSight 20". At first, I thought it was a lock file problem, caused by me forgetting and disconnecting the camera without first ejecting the desktop icon. But, I now think the problem is more likely caused by upgrading to 10.4.3, since I spoke with AppleCare today.
I was told that the 10.4.3 upgrade says (somewhere) that due to changes in iSync, cameras will no longer be mounted on the desktop. I made the observation that many users of digital still cameras prefer to transfer images from the camera (or chip) using the Finder. The operator said he would escalate this issue - he didn't know why this might have been changed, but seemed to understand that it would be an issue for a number of people.
Personally, I'm confused by the whole arrangement, which seems most un-Mac like: image handling prefs are actually set in Image Capture, despite the fact that the default app that launches when connecting a camera is iPhoto. Now, it seems, iSync is being brought into the frame (please excuse the pun!).
Why can't the action be defined in a General Preference pane, where it would be more easily found? Well, the answer is that it surely could be - and I would suggest that it should be. And I think the prefs should also include an option to have the camera/flash chip mounted on the desktop, for access in Finder too.
On a final note, the Nikon D50 is, I was told, not in the list of cameras supported by Tiger. Yet, when I checked with Nikon, they do not issue any drivers for the D50 and said that the drivers in Tiger are "D-series camera drivers" and, as such, are compatible with the new D50. Unfortunately, a lot of my time was wasted, because the AppleCare rep repeatedly wanted me to accept that the problem was due to the fact that this model of camera is not supported. This was despite the fact that I advised him of the fact that there are a number of threads here in the discussion forums, with users mentioning that they've had exactly the same issue with a variety of different cameras, of many brands.
I'll report back, as and when I hear anything further from the escalation of this issue.

You have tried a lot of things, all correct, but have you repaired permissions since reinstalling Flash?
Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Leopard.
    Background information here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
    and here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302672
An article on troubleshooting Permissions can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963
By the way, you can ignore any messages about SUID or ACL file permissions, as explained here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.
Also, how much RAM do you have? Some older G4's can struggle with today's streamed flash content.

  • CD-R not mounted on the desktop

Sinc ehte CD-R I'm use to use since years are no more mounted on the desktop i think i could have decided, by mistake, to flag the option as default not to mount them
If you see a dialog, you can choose an action from the pop-up menu and select “Make this action the default” if you want the same thing to happen every time you insert a blank disc.
The disc appears on your desktop."
Let's suppose i decided once by mistake NOT TO MOUNT the CD on the desktop, how can i come back and delete the choice i did?
    Thanks

In Preferences, CDs & DVDs, simple select what you want to happen for blank CDs DVDs music, picture CDs or video DVDs.
It's all there. You can change it anytime.

  • When connecting to server the other computers will not mount on the desktop

    Hello
I have three computers connected wireless and ethernet. When connecting to the imac and mac pro with my macbook pro the other computers will not mount on the desktop. I have never had a problem like this before.
The imac and mac pro will mount the laptop or imac and the imac will mount the mac pro and laptop.
When I connect to the server with the laptop I can access everything thru the shared folders but nothing will mount on the laptop desktop using the, connect to server.
External HD connected with firewire will mount and the internal cd/dvd will mount.
I have ran permissions repair on the laptop. Have I accidently changed some configuration I am not aware of?
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated
    Thank You
    Dick

    Dick,
I know this sounds silly but while in Finder goto (Finder)/(Preferences) and then make sure your on the (General) tab, make sure all the things you want to show are checked.
If that doesn't help move the com.apple.finder.plist to the desktop you can find in in ~/Library/Preferences ( ~ = Your Home Folder), log out/log in, and see if that fixes the problem if not go ahead and move the plist file back.
    hope that helps,
    Weston

  • Lacie DVD burner - DVDs & CDs won't mount on the Desktop

    Hi -
I've had an external Lacie Porsche DVD burner for about 11 months now. Two months ago, both CDs & DVDs stopped mounting on the Desktop. I've aleady verified that CD & DVDV mounting on the Desktop is selected in Finder General Prefs. All CDs mount fine when inserted in the internal CD burner drive.
The DVD burner shows up in ASP, iTunes & Toast as Ac NEC, model #2510A, I believe.
The Lacie product (model) # is 300759A.
Thanks, in advance, for any feedback.

You ought to try this as well on the hardware forum as well.

  • Can't see 2 disks icons on the desktop

    Hi!
I have an external HD called loumel that I can't see on my desktop anymore when I plug it in.
I also have a new Palm LifeDrive that does not show up on the desktop when in drive mode.
I have tried a few of the tricks that Francine discusses in here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=865694&tstart=0
but it does not seem to work, although I am not familier with Terminal or Scripts.
    Thanks.
    Louis

Yes, it is the Go->Go to Folder... that I am talking about. It should work even without the folder:
    /Volumes/loumel/
and the drive's root window would open, IF the problem is the one where the invisible bit is set. If there is something else that is wrong then it won't work. The error in the Applescript about "NSReceiverEvaluationError" is what you get if you run the script when the drive is not mounted.
If you updated to 10.4.9 that could be the source of the problem. A number of people who updated their systems discovered the system was no longer seeing their external drives after the update.

  • Blank discs no longer mount on the desktop

Blank discs no longer mount on my MacBook pro (2007). I do not see them on the desktop, nor in /Volumes. However, the System Profiler and the Disk Utility see them. Already burned discs (data, video) work fine.
I did two things since last time I was able to burn a disc
    1. Installed Snow Leopard (from macbox set) - clean. Had Tiger before.
    2. Bought WD external HD that installed some drivers. However, WD did not put anything in my System folder because it did not ask for a password.
Also, this is a general rather than a MacBook Pro problem. Is there any way to post it under "all computers"?

Thanks, I will try that. However, the fix described there (reset PMU/SMC) applies to all discs. In my case only blank discs will not mount. Audio, video, and data discs mount fine.
    Thanks

  • My iPod does not mount to the desktop!

Under my system profile, my computer recognizes that my iPod is present, yet it does not mount to my desktop or iTunes. What could be wrong?

Good, I'm not sure if this will work, but it's worth a try.
Here's a way to do it without Terminal.
In finder, go to the "Go" menu and choose "Go to Folder". In the box that opens, type "/Volumes". When that opens, you are looking at the devices mounted to the operating system. If no iPod is there, then even though the system sees the device, for some reason it can't mount it at all.
If you have permissions problems, then you might have to enable the root account. If that's the case I can give you directions on how to do that, but I don't think you'll need it as long as you are an Administrator of the computer.
If that folder opens, and you don't see your iPod, let me know. Even though I have seen this happen a bunch of times, I'm having trouble recreating it at the moment, so I can't test to see if I can manually mount it. I'd like to try to give you directions to do so.
Otherwise, if you see an entry for you iPod, try clicking on it and see if you get in.

  • ISight Camera mounted on G4 desktop?

How can I mount my iSight camera on my G4 destop screen? I wonder if Apple have an adapter for the camera. I do not want to use those glue patches. Has anyone come up with their own adaptor ideas, without having to mount the camera on top of a pile of books, or a Lava lamp like my husband has just done??!!!!! My lovely sleek G4 just does not look quite right with an orange Lava lamp next to it.

We bought the SightFlex and are very pleased with it.
Below is the website where it is available. It only cost $19.99 US, which is a lot less than the Canadian price of almost $50 C. There is a 21" neck on it, so the base of the camera is at least 21" from the desktop. It comes with a 5 foot Firewire cable, so that makes it very flexible for use not only right next to the screen, but up to 5 feet from a laptop. We used it a lot over the holidays and were able to manoeuver the camera among the crowd for gift opening!
    Thanks for the original recommendations.

  • SD card / reader don't mount on the desktop

There are ongoing SD / SDHC card issues that Apple needs to address.
I have an both an original MBP and original MacBook. Both are running 10.6.2. Both do not mount my SD or SDHC cards on the desktop. I've tried 4 different cards and 3 different readers (1 just came from Amazon today).
They do show up under disk utility. To access the data I have to make an image from it and then it mounts no problem. When in a camera, the camera mounts, iPhoto launches and I can transfer the images. But in a card reader, no go.
I just did a SMC reset and that did not help.

  • My external hard drive will not mount on the desktop?

My external hard drive no longer mounts on my desktop, the hard drive has been checked & is working-has anyone ideas?

    Hello cuckoo55,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
Mac OS X v10.6: How to show your hard drive icon on the desktop
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3746
In the Finder, choose Preferences from the Finder menu.
Click the General icon on the toolbar.
Select "Hard disks" in the "Show these items on the desktop:" section.
    Close the Finder Preferences window.
    Best of luck,

  • I want to see my hard drive ON the desktop, please!

I'm not sure why it seems that Apple wants to "simplify" things to a point that the results can become unfamiliar to the typical Mac user, like myself.
Just got finished looking at a document online about where to find the hard drive, and wasn't real thrilled about it. I like to be able to access the hard drive from the desktop. I am not the Finder Window menu type of guy!
If someone can aid me in placing the hard drive icon on my desktop WITHOUT me having to install Tiger (default installation disc), that would be great.

I do not see it on the dock; oh, and I forgot to mention, I recently reinstalled Snow Leopard.
Also, it seems that there isn't an option to have the hard drive displayed on the desktop, by right-clicking or whatever.

  • I no longer see my WD passport on the desktop and the time machine no longer backs up.  What can I do to fix this?  Thank you

I haven't had my iMac backed up in quite awhile because my WD passport is not being recognized.  I went to disk utility to set it up again, but get the message "No configured AirPort base stations have been found."  I've even did the simple thing of turning off my machine, unplugging the WD passport and then replugging it in after a rebooting. Nothing!  What have I done to mess this up and can it be fix?  Thank you for any help you can give.
I wasn't sure what info you might need:
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11GB63b)
Processor GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB 1067 MHz Ram
    WD Passport for Mac 1T

Is the WD drive plugged into the Mac directly or into the Airport??
If it is in the airport.. unplug it and plug it back into the Mac.. you cannot use Disk Utility on remote drives.
The WD could be dead.. Disk utility should show you.
