Seeing all open windows in 10.7

I just upgraded from 10.6.8 to 10.7.5. I miss being able to use a hot corner to see all open windows. I cannot find that in 10.7. Does anyone know where it is?

Thank you, brenden dv. I found that and used the hot corners to show the windows open, grouped by application. One thing that confused me was that the Help Center window stayed front and center, even though I was clicking on other windows. When I closed that window, then the correct application window opened up front.
However, the problem remains that all the windows are grouped by application, and it is almost impossible to tell which window is which when I have 3 or 4 windows open from one application, since they are stacked so tightly on top of one another. This means that I often cannot get to the window I want.
Grouping windows by application makes no sense from a user point of view. When I want to get to a certain file, I do not think, "Oh, that is a Word doc, I better get to Word." No, I just want to see my doc and click on it. Who still organizes all their files by the application that created it? No one I know.
OS 10.6.8 had a hot corner that showed icons or large thumbnails of all open windows, all shown separately on the desktop, so all one had to do was go to the hot corner, find the window and click on it, and voilå, that was your window, front and center. I cannot find that in 10.7.
Thanks for the help.

  • How to see all open windows at once?

    It use to be that in OSX I could hit F3 and all of the open documents on my screen would spread out so I could see everything at once.  Now with the new OS, F3 just makes every open window pile up according to what application its from.  This is NOT an improvement!  Is there a way that I can get around this.  I often have 10 or more files open in Photoshop and I need to be able to see them all at once in order to make selections or see what has been gathered.

    Did some testing -
    Normally I use a wired keyboard. On it, F10 spreads the application's windows.
    When I turn my wireless keyboard on, F10 on it is indeed the Mute function. But, at the same time F10 on the wired keyboard still spreads windows.
    Hmm, this could cause a lot of confusion....

  • F9 Key – Tile or un-tile all open windows (for quick selection and access)?

    This not working for me.  How can I see all open windows?
    Thanks

    I am able to set my windows where I want them and the next time I start up, they return to the same place, except for Word.

    Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
    (On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
    (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
    For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

    Why does closing all open windows (15) and leaving only one drop ram usage by only 100mb from 1.5 to 1.4Gb.
    What is in this 1.4 gb ?
    I don't care much about ram, It's just that cpu usage spike like crazy by the end.

    Hi musicfan,<br />Sorry you are having problems with Firefox. Maybe you should have asked earlier and we could have fixed it.
    Reading your comments I do not see that rolling back to an insecure Firefox 22 will actually help you much. You are probably best using IE, unless you have also damaged that.
    *[[Export bookmarks to Internet Explorer]]
    You should not use old versions they are insecure. Security fixes are publicised and exploitable.

    Most others will not be having such problems. We are now able to say that with confidence because after developers missed a regression in Firefox 4 telemetry was introduced so that data was obtained. It may be an idea to turn on your telemetry, if you have not already done so, and decide to stick with Firefox.

  • An OS before 10.10 provided shortcut f10 to "show all open windows".  How do we do that with 10.10?

    It Has been very convenient at times to review all open windows, especially when working on multiple projects that clutter the desktop.  Without the f10 shortcut, I can't easily find my way through the mishmash piled high on my desktop.  How do we "show all open windows" with Yosemite??

    I'm guessing you are referring to "Mission Control" - the keyboard shortcut for this is set in "System Preferences" then "Mission Control" and I think the default when the system is first setup is F3, not F10. So check out "System Preferences" and see what it currently is and if you want to change it to the F10 go ahead and change it there, along with any of the other shortcuts you might have had before with the previous OS X version.
    Good luck...

  • Howto close all open windows?

    Hi,
    I am developing some kind of library, and I would like to close all open windows, dialogs, tooltips in the error case.
    The problem is I don't have control about the windows currently open, many are instantiated by plug-ins.
    Is there a way to get a list of all windows? This way I could go throw the list and simply call dispose() on all.
    Thank you in advance, Clemens

    One possible approach could be trying to track AWT event. I would try to get notified as each Component is added and maintained in a hashtable.
    getToolkit().addAWTEventListener (aWTEventListener, AWTEvent.COMPONENT_EVENT_MASK | AWTEvent.CONTAINER_EVENT_MASK);
    AWTEventListener  aWTEventListener = new AWTEventListener()
            public void eventDispatched (AWTEvent Event)
            // find the component from event source and record it.
    };

    Before I upgraded to 8.0 I could double click and see all open Apps and then close them. Now when I double click I am not sure what I am seeing or what to do?

    The format keeps changing but the basics remain...in the center of the screen are large images of the recent apps which you can close by swiping up and away.

  • Find names of all open windows including other applications besides LabView VIs

    Hi All, I have researched this subject, i.e., to find names of all open windows including other applications besides LabView VIs, but found no solution. Could someone suggest a solution to this?  Thanks.

    Hi,
    Certainly! The Windows API Function Utilities (32-bit) for LabVIEW includes set of LabVIEW libraries (llb) with VIs that make calls to the Windows Application Programming Interface (API) for managing and controlling windows (minimize, maximize, move, resize, rename, close, and so on) including task list with names of windows application running. The Readme.doc contains information on running these VIs.
    Attached below is a zipped file with a VI that list the names of all opened windows.

  • Close all  open windows at same time

    Is there any way to close all open programs at once, rather than having to do them one at a time?

    I don't know of a way to close all open apps at the same time, but i do know of a way to close all open windows in a particular app at one time, ie: safari
    Hold down Option when you click on the red close button at the top of one of those windows, and it will close all windows *for that app*...but doing so doesn't necessarily quit the app.
    The only other thing i can think of you can do is hold down Command, Option, and Esc to get the Force Quit window to open, (or access it from the Apple menu at the top left corner) and then you can select one at a time all the apps and force quit them individually...it's still quicker than switching between each app individually..

  • Close all open windows

    Is there any way to close all open windows at once? I cannot find any way to do so. Any keyboard shortcut?

    Thanks, Tom.
    Your response led me to the answer I was looking for. However, I found it worked better to press command and option , then click the red close button on the top line of the top window. This closed all open windows within the application of the open window. I had to do the same thing for each application. In my test case, I opened about 10 word processor windows and 10 email windows, all at the same time. I had to do the command-option - click red button twice, once for my email application, and once for the word processor application. It took me about 2 seconds to close all of the open windows.
    Thanks a lot for your instructions.

  • Hiding all open windows.

    On my Mini (running Tiger), I'm sure that I used to be able to hide all open windows by pressing F11 to show the desktop. How do I do this on my iMac, running Leopard and using the aluminium keyboard?
    Pressing F11 just reduces the volume. Tried pressing F11 in conjunction with the shift, control, alt and command keys, to no avail.

    clockworks wrote:
    I knew that'd work on a laptop keyboard, but I hadn't noticed the Fn key on this desktop keyboard!
    I agree with that. the Fn key location on my powerbook is a lot more convenient than on the aluminum keyboard for my mac pro.
    Strange place to put it, right above the delete key.....
    Thanks.

  • Minimize All Open Windows

    Hello:
    I am using Photoshop CS2 on Win XP machine and was wondering if there was a keystroke to minimizing all open windows or can that be set up in custom keystrokes.

    ALL open windows, or all open document windows within Photoshop?
    To minimize ALL open application windows, press and hold the left "Windows" key. While holding that key, press "M". The "Windows" key is the quad twisted square key, usually between the Ctrl and Alt keys. Some people actually think the key looks like the Windows logo.
    (has nothing to do with Photoshop)
