Seeing external drives on imac on macbook runnibng xp

I can see the internal mac drives but cannot access the external drives be it USB or Firewire. NTFS formatted or HFFS. I have macdrive so either way it should not be an issue (formatting).

Get Sharepoints...
http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/
It'll allow you to set the External Drive to a Share, and even who can have what permissions on it.
PS. you were lucky before, only the Internal Drive shows up under Sharing normally... yet a few it does show up for!?

hardware test using an external optical device (iMac) on macbook pro 9 years old via firewire. What to do? and how to do it?
I thiunk the graphic card is defective and need to run hwt

    You don't.
Need a internal optical drive and the Hardware Test on disks is old and outdated anyway.
Your machine has lasted a long time, congratulations, they usually only last about 4-5 years.
They get clogged up with dust and overheat, kills the video card, there is nothing you can do as it's hardware damage over time.

  • Use drive on iMac for Macbook Air time machine backup

I have an external drive hooked up to my Imac and want to use it for backing up my Mac Air via time machine.  Is it possible?  I can see the drive and Imac in finder...

    Yup.

  • Suddenly Mac mini won't "see" external drives. Possible related to OS software update to 10.6.8?

Suddenly Mac mini won't "see" external drives, neither Firewire nor USB. Possible related to OS software update to 10.6.8? Worked fine under 10.6.4. Any advice? Thanks.

Turns out it was nothing to do with the OS update, it was just a loose cable plug connecting my FireWire/USB hub to the computer. But your tip is a good one -- I'd been wondering why the external drives (even when mounted properly) weren't showing up in the sidebar. Thanks!

  • Share files & external HD between iMac and Macbook (wirelessly)?

I just bought a new iMac Bad-A computer to add to my rapidly growing arsenal of apple products.  I'm having a little trouble figuring out how to share an external HD.
Here's how I have it set up:
iMac in office is connected directly to external HD via firewire.
Airport Extreme is my wireless router in the living room
Macbook is obviously mobile and makes its way to different rooms in the house
Here's what I'd like to accomplish:
Direct file sharing between the iMac to Macbook.  I'd like to be able to access files from any location on either computer from the other one.  I'd also like the external HD to show up on both the iMac and the Macbook.
Both computers are running the latest version of OS X
    Thanks!

Then turn on file sharing in System Preferences on the iMac and the MB will be able to access the drive.
I have a HD connected to an Airport Extreme (APEx) and I have file sharing on my MB (administrator's MacBook) This is what I see in the Finder on my iMac

  • Can't See External Drive Data

    Hi,
I'm brand new to Macs but loving my new iMac and Airport Extreme with one problem... I keep all my music on an External drive and I can't see anything on the drive. It is plugged into an Airport Extreme through a USB hub. I plugged it into the Airport directly and got same result. Printers plugged into the hub work fine.
If I go into the Airport Utility, I can see the that the hard drive exists and appears to have the sharing settings correct (according to other posts here). I can't see it from my PC's either. If I plug the drive into a PC, the other PC's can see all the music. The external drive is a Maxtor 200 gig One Touch.
    Any suggestions?

Just to respond to the comment above.
Disk formatting and disk access security are two different thing.
An Airport disk can be formatted as HFS+ and both Macs and PCs will be able to access it.
Regarding "Security" which you setup on the Airport Extreme there are two option:
    a) "Secure Disks: With accounts": Here each user on your network will only be able to see and access the folders and files they uploaded to the Airport disk themselves. The disk (as hardware) is shared but data is not shared.
    b) "With a disk password": Here all users on your network will be able to see and access all folders and files on the Airport disk.
I hope this makes things a little more clear.

  • Cannot access shared external drive on iMac from Windows 7

Used to be able to access this drive with no problem from any of my PC's. Sent iMac in for repair and system drive was wiped so I'm starting from clean install of Leopard. Did all the updates first including 10.6.4 which wasn't on before the system drive died.
    Firewall is off
    SMB is on
Everyone as well as main user has read write access to external drive
iMac is in the same workgroup as machine, although it wasn't before and it worked fine.
PC can ping the IP of the iMac and get a response, can see the iMac in list of networked computers
but cannot access anything on it.
Windows 7 network diagnostics says "file and print sharing resource (JMGIMAC) is online but isn't responding to connection attempts" "The remote computer isn't responding to connections on port 445
    I've tried everything, any ideas
    Josh

I am familiar with the instructions for sharing files and have followed them (several times I might add).
My problem is that the information that I place in the WINS tab ( in the Network Preference Pane) disappears when the iMac is re-started. This information (especially the Workgroup name) must appear when the computer re-boots. It doesn't and I have to re-enter the information in the iMac before I can access its files from a Windows PC.
I have searched the internet for days trying to find an answer to this question. Although the problem seems to be fairly common, no solutions have been found.

  • Mac Doesn't See External Drives on WinPC, PC Doesn't See Mac

I'm trying to transfer some files that are on an external drive connected to a Windows PC to my new Mac Pro.
On the Mac, in Finder, I can see the PC, but I can only see it's internal Hard Drive; the external drive don't show up in Finder.
On the PC, I'm not seeing the Mac Pro at all. In Tiger, it seems to me, there was check box under the "sharing" preferences for "Windows sharing," but I can't find that in Leopard. So, the PC doesn't see the Mac at all.
It does suddenly dawn on me that I could just detach the external drive that I'm trying to copy from the PC and plug it into the Mac, but... that would be too easy. I would still like, at least, to be able to see the Mac from the PC.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    --PS

My recommendation is to format the drive as FAT32 via OSX's Disk Utility, this will allow you to read/write from both the Mac and PC environment.
Like I said, I don't think that's the issue, because my MacBook shares everything with the PC just fine (except the externals on the PC). And of course, I don't want to reformat the external drives until I've got the data off of them.
I just checked, and Tiger has a "Windows sharing" checkbox under the "Sharing Preferences" that allows the MacBook to show up in "My Network Places" on the PC. The problem I'm having is getting the MacPro to show up on the PC; the Pro has Leopard, and there's no "Windows Sharing" in Leopard that I can see.
    Thanks again,

  • How can I manually move photos off of my iPhone 5S to an external drive connected to my MacBook Pro?

My iPhone does not show up as a device on finder.  My 4S did.  So how do I force move photos from the 5S to an external device?  I do not see an option for this on the NEW iTunes .

Import the photos to you computer.  Copy them to external drive.

  • Using external drive with iMac as startup

I have an iMac that the hard drive is failing thus I purchased an external drive to use as a startup up drive connected to the iMac.  How reliable is this setup and what are the cons/pros in operating this way?

Assuming you bought a FW800 drive the performance should be OK, not as good as your old internal HD but useable. If you bought a USB drive the performance is going to be very slow. As far as reliability it should be fine assuming you bought a decent quality HD. However why not just get the internal HD replaced? If you decide to move forward with the external HD after you install OS X onto it don't forget to make sure it's set as your Startup drive in System Preferences.

  • How do I transfer my iTunes library from an external drive to my new macbook air?

I have an 8 year old MacBook Pro that has a small hard drive.  So 8 years ago I put all my songs (35GB) on an external drive.  I just bought a MacBook Air that has 256 GB of space and would like to transfer all my songs, movies, etc. to it and stop using the old hard drive.  Can anyone help me with how to do this?  Thanks.

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide ~/Music/ as the folder's path, and drag the entire iTunes library, including the database files, to it.
Alternatively, you can drag the entire library to any location on the internal drive, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, and choose it.
If you only put the songs and not the database files on the external drive, drag it to the internal drive and from there to the library in the open iTunes application window.

  • Trying to format an external drive for imac

Hi I am new to this and have just bought an external drive to back up my imac, 9,1 via time machine. I have followed the instructions in disk utility to erase and reformat, but it is coming back with an error message " could not unmount disk" - can anyone help me get round this please?

An iMac running OS 9.1.x? If so, post to http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=99. If not, since you're mentioning Time Machine, correct your profile information. From Finder->Help->Mac Help: *erase a disk*, returns:
    *+To erase a disk:+*
+Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.+
    +Open Disk Utility+
+Select the disk in the list at left, and then click Erase.+
+For more information about erasing, click the Help button (looks like a question mark).+

  • External Drive for iTunes new MacBook Air

I recently upgraded from a MBP (2009) to a new MBA.  I have always had my iTunes directory on an external drive. (For the last 3 MacBooks I have had...) so I know how to properly map iTunes to the drive, etc...
When I finished setting up the new MBA - I attempted to access the External Drive hooked up to my new TimeCapsule.  However iTunes would not recognize the database.  (I set the new location as directed)
I then disconnected the External Drive, and connected directly to the MBA - and attempted the same - with no luck.
The only way I seem to be able to access anything on my iTunes is via iTunes Match.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  Thank you in advance..

  • Is there any way to restore data from an external drive to another external drive without using the macbook pro you backed up?

Is that I sold my macbook pro an the person who bought it needs it quickly so I have an external drive but it is not portable so I bought a portable external drive but it may take a while to arrive so I backed up my data with the external drive that I have in my house but I would like to know if I can restore my data to the new external drive without the macbook pro and just with the external drive of my house to the portable external drive.
    Thank you

No, that's not possible. A computer is required in order to effect such a transfer. Connect both drives to your computer. You can use Disk Utility to clone one drive to the other. Be sure you first partition and format the new drive:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new external drive. Source means the old external drive.
