Seeing LOTS of beach balls!

Lately I have been seeing TONS of beach balls and delays.  For instance, I play a clip, pause for a moment, hit play again, and get a beach ball for a good 20 seconds before playback resumes.  I click on a menu in the menu bar and it sits for a good 10-12 seconds before the menu drops down.  I move the scrubber from one place to another and I get a 10-15 second beach ball before I see the new frame in the viewer.
This seems to not be isolated in FCP.  Even while typing this, halfway through a sentence, it will beach ball for no reason.
Looking at my performance meters, my main drive has 400GB empty, I am only using a small portion of my RAM, and the CPU is nearly idol.
Any ideas would be awesome!

HDV needs to be decompressed to edit, doesn't it?
Regardless, balls usually indicate network or other processor chores interfering with FCP's unusually unreasonable demands for all services. Open Activity Monitor, see if anything looks weird to you. Don't Kill Process, that can get you into trouble. Instead, quit everything, restart, repair permissions if you think that will make you feel better, and launch Activity Monitor before you launch FCP.

  • My new imac retina has a lot of beach balls.  Anyone else?

I bought a brand new imac 5k retina, 1 TB Flash Drive, 32 Gig of ram, etc, and this thing gives me beach balls more than my 7 year old imac.  I set this one up as new and did not transfer over a profile from an older imac.  I haven't done anything exotic on this thing so far.  Use iTunes a lot, iPhoto some, iMovie some, etc.  I get a lot of beach balls doing simple stuff like using Safari and iTunes.
This is in addition to being bummed about the Finder not working (spent hours working with apple support with no solution).
I'll be contacting support about the beach balls but I'm not optimistic of a solution based on my recent experience with them.  Perhaps I'll be surprised.  Just checking to see if others have noticed any irregularities with their system, etc.
    Thanks.

Thanks but I'm always puzzled by those who respond to a post by repeating Apple's return policy.
The reason is that a brand new Mac that hasn't had software migrated from an older Mac and on which you "haven't done anything exotic" should not be behaving like you describe. If it is, that may be caused by a hardware issue. You're better off returning the machine within the allowed timeframe than trying to deal with a possible hardware issue as a warranty repair.
If you have actually installed some third-party software on that machine that you neglected to mention, that is another likely cause for the problem.
I am writing this from a two-month-old Mac with 16 GB of RAM, with Yosemite, and that is loaded up with all kinds of third-party software, and I simply don't see beach balls. Everything is very snappy. This is not something you should write off as being "just a Yosemite problem."

  • Can't access one user on mac....one user is OK although it runs very slow..lots of beach ball action...tried using shift to access user and no use...I ran a disk check from good user and it checks out OK...what do I need to do

I cannot access one of two users on my mac..i have tried using the shift key but no luck...the one user that I can access runs very slowly, I get a lot of beach balls from **** action...also the message "unapproved caller" keeps popping up...I ran disk check from good user and it shows OK...Disk usage shows ~267gb used out of 360gb disk

  • LOTS of beach balls spinning !?..

    hi Guys
i installed M.Lion as soon as it became available & even though i am pleased with it in general, fact is i have seen a BIG increase of spinning beach balls on my iMac's screen lately...
this usually happens when launching an app, when i return to the computer after a couple of minutes away even though it hasn't gone asleep or trying to open one of my external drives ( FW800 or USB drives take the same time..)...
trying to determine what is causing this & while a total newb on the subject, i opened Activity Monitor to see if something unusual would pop out
one thing did & i was wondering if anyone can tell me this is normal or...?
at the time i was downsizing a video file using Handbrake & every other value looked kind of normal as far as i could tell except for this one from - i believe.. - my APC ups software PowerChute
does that value mean it's using up 97.6% of the total processor useage ? isn't that MASSIVE ? i mean EVERY other use was 0.something except for the fisrt 4.8 value of Activity Monitor itslef in the first place...
any ideas how i should go about solving this ?
my machine is a 27'' iMac i7, 2.8GHz w/ 16GB RAM, now running M.Lion, purchased on 15/06/2010 running Snow Leopard, model identifier 11,1 with every update done
    - 2 X NewerTech Guardian Maximus FW800 enclosures ( 2 X Western Digital 3TB drives in each.. ) one has my music, the other my video
      - 2 X Western Digital My Book 2TB USB drives set up in Raid 1 with Disk Utility as Time Machine back-up
      - 1 Cambridge Audio DacMagic connected optical out from iMac, then via RCA's to amp a couple of meters away
thanks in advance for any suggestions

    well...
talk about complicating things unnecessarily !...LOL...
i opened a drawer where i keep all sorts of odds & ends & guess what ? yup, the original APC PowerChute install disk was there, laughing at me - bugger....
so i inserted it, clicked open & it does come with an ''uninstall_pcpe.command'' + some info, etc...
read everything just to make sure my iMac wouldn't go into space or something, double clicked on that command, Terminal opened, asked Y or no to remove it, then my password, pressed OK & BOOOM !! done, it's gone...uff !
i'll check out how the iMac behaves in the next few days see if the beach balls were it's fault or if it's just because it's summertime & will report back
in case this might be useful to somebody else :
& it looks like it might be the solution, the 97.04%User ( bottom left corner.. ) being Handbrake doing it's thing - i think !? :
thanks Thomas for pointing me in thre right direction ;-)

  • A lot of beach balls - Mac Pro 5,1 Mid 2010

    Problem description:
    Hi, I have a MacPro 5,1 Mid 2010.
    6 core 3.33ghz
    24GB OWC RAM 1333mhz
OWC Mercury PRO 256GB SSD installed in 2nd optical slot w/ Yosemite
OWC Mercury Electra 480Gb for Bootcamp in slot 1
    3 ST31000340NS 1TB, 2 in Raid 0; all HFS journaled.
Unchecked “Put hard disks to sleep”
I constantly have the beach balls in lots of apps, seems like the computer is freezing frequently. I'm posting the logs that come out most often, and also a full startup log.
I was upgrading from an Imac 27” i5 mid 2011 that was noticeably faster… Which is strange considering the power of this Mac Pro.
Any ideas? I read a lot on apple support forums so I’m also including etrecheck log
    Thank you!
**Update** I think I found part of the problem; I removed all my fonts from Suitcase Fusion 5; It seems like my suitcase fonts are corrupting Font Book (threw a lot of font errors in console), but I need those fonts for graphic desing; Is there another way of adding them than copying the SuitcaseFusion.Fontvault File?
Though I still have occasionnal beach balls from clicking and opening apps.

    Thanks for your help!

You have turned OFF GateKeeper, thereby eliminating the protection built into Mac OS X from non-signed downloads. Legitimate downloads from registered developers are signed with their registered signatures, and stuff that is not signed should not be downloaded onto a system you appear to be using for business purposes.
So many entries in the Hosts file sometimes indicates the installation of pirated software.  You have a number of very invasive and quite questionable items kernel extensions installed on your Mac, and do not appear to be keeping them up-to-date.
Why do you need aftermarket key mapping software Karabiner? Mac OS X has key mapping built in.
If you insist on using third-party VPN, you should use one that is up-to-date. I expect some of the XPC errors are coming because of your antique VPN software.

So my quick assessment is that your Mac is unstable because you have added too much Junk. [Junk is defined as stuff that is perfectly good, but you do not happen to need right now, such as the things in your attic.] Clean out the attic and your Mac will run more smoothly.

  • Tips For Solving the Mac OS X Lion Slowness (Lots of Beach Balls)

    Hi Folks,
Just a quick list of tips for this issue that some of Mac OS X Lion users face.
The main symptom is that we get the Beach Ball on almost any task, it takes 4, maybe five times more time to do what we need to do. So depending on the schedule, it can drive us crazy. I was facing that, and started to think that Lion was a Windows Vista relative.
Please remind that the tips below involve backing up and restoring your system. If you are not careful, you may lose everything. You are responsible for your acts. Be cautious!
    How I solved my issue:
    1) Checked for Disk Permissions and the Disk itself:
    - Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility:
    - Click on your disk, and then VERIFY DISK. If everything is OK, move on. If it is not, REPAIR DISK.
    - Now click on VERIFY DISK PERMISSIONS. If everthing is OK, move. If not, Repair.
This step 1 is to make sure that your slowness is due to something related to the OS itself and not to permissions/disk.
If this solves the slowness, then you are OK. Now further steps are necessary. In my case, this just helped a little bit. The beach-balling reduced by 20% only. Still too slow.
    2) Do a full backup of your system.
I used Time Machine. Make sure you have all of your applications closed. So the backup will be full. If you fail to do a good backup, you will lose everything! Make sure you do a good one. Maybe do it twice on 2 different disks! Now you have been warned.
    3) Do a Full Restore of your entire system.
Now, get that Install CD that came with your Mac,
    - Put it on your drive, shut down your computer.
    - While holding the C key, press the start button of your Mac. It will boot using the Install CD that came with your Mac.
    To recover your entire system:
Connect your Time Machine backup disk to your computer. If you’re restoring your system because of a problem with your startup disk, make sure the disk has been repaired or replaced.
Insert your Mac OS X Install disk, and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
In the Installer, choose Utilities > Restore System from Backup.
In the Restore Your System dialog, click Continue.
Select your Time Machine backup volume.
Select the Time Machine backup you want to restore.
    Follow the onscreen instructions.
    4) Remove the CD, and boot.
When I did that, the system came back very fast and responsive. No more beach balls (only on the really-intensive tasks), and everything was back to normal.
    5) So, what was it anyways?
Before doing this Backup/Restore, I was getting lots of DISK I/O ERRORS, specially during boot time (you can check that by shutting down your mac, powering it back on and imediatelly pressing Command-V - Verbose Mode).
Sure, the first thing in mind was that I had a faulty hard drive, but I checked it several times for errors (via Disk Utility), and nothing showed up.
So I decided to do a full backup/restore of the system. And it solved it, at least for me.
    My config:
    MacBook Pro (2009 edition) - 5 GB RAM - 640 GB HD - Mac OS X 10.7
    Regards.

Also my mac will not complete my 5 software updates, no idea which software, but it said it could not do it. Also backing up with time machine had failed twice today. Thanks

  • Getting a lot of beach balls Application not responding

I have a fairly complex system with 4 internal 1tb drives, 1 external 1tb drive, 1 external 1.5tb drive and an external 2tb drive used by time machine. The system drive contains 2 partitions. The partition containing the OS is 322gb with 72gb free. I havedual cinema displays and literally 100s of applications.
My system has gotten very "sluggish" with a lot of freeze ups, apps not responding and other beach balls. I've been through a couple of OS upgrades currently at latest release of snow leopard.
Do I need to format my disk and do a clean install? If I do, can I just clone the System drive and then copy apps back? Main applications are Photoshop CS5, Lightroom 3 Microsoft Office, Real Studio, Filemaker 11, and all the associated plug-ins and support apps that go along. Reinstalling them would be a nightmare.
I run VirusBarrier X6 with scans each night.
any help is appreciated in advance.
    bill

I was also wondering about login items as well, but mine takes forever to restart before it even reaches the login screen, so I'm thinking it isn't a problem with that. Unless some login items start initiating before the actual login is done. My MacBook Pro is running 10.6.7 as well, but it seems fine. I attempted an installation CD startup, checked for disk repair (ok), disk permissions (ok), then tried re-installing Snow Leopard. It got so far then couldn't finish the installation.
Ok, so I just tried it again just now and it seems to be running fine again. The only thing I did was get rid of two unknown files in login items (buttonhelper or something) using ( - ), not just hiding them. Time Machine does appear to be doing some strange things, so I erased that disk and initiated a fresh TimeMachine backup.
Don't know about you, but I'm baffled...

  • Fans are on all the time/lots of beach balls

since loading leopard the fans on my 2.5 dual power mac G5(7 gig ram)
are on all the time also just about every click from the mouse gives me the dreaded beach ball of dome
    has anyone had this problem
    thanks
    charlie

i did a clean install of leopard and i'm seeing beach balls more than an other OS X !
Safari seems to be having a hard time of it too.
i know its early on but for me this seems the least stable cat out of the bag so far... maybe its a power pc thing.

  • Wacky login behavior, lots of beach balls

So get this. My browser and then my machine crashed after going to wikipedia.org. I repaired disk permissions, and the main thing that happened was that all my flash plugins had bad permissions that were fixed. But wikipedia kept crashing Safari. I thought it was a font cache problem. I used Font Finagler to clean the font cache (this is something I run into because I do a lot of graphic design and am running Suitcase X1). Font Finagler uses Font Book to track certain font things, but Font Book was crashing too, so I let Font Finagler run without needing to launch Font Book.
This is where it gets interesting.
Now my MBP is very slow starting up. It takes four of five minutes to get to where you choose the user and enter password.
Even more strange, I choose the user, enter the first character of the password, and I get a spinning beach ball for about 30 to 45 seconds, then screen turns blue, and I get sent back to where I have to choose the user again. The second I select my user, I can enter the password without problem.
Still, all sorts of applications and standard operations cause a spinning beach ball....that....lasts....a....long....time. Ouch.
Also, this began with 10.5.3 installed. Frustrated with the problem, I thought that upgrading to 10.5.4 might magically fix it, but no dice. Same issues as before. At least nothing got worse...
Thoughts about what I should do?

There is a possibility that your user accounts and possibly your applications in the /applications directory might have some corrupt ACL entries assigned to them. It was more of a problem under 10.5.0 - 10.5.1 than 10.5.2 and later. Disk utility will not detect them either as the permissions database does not include entries for user and application folders, so DU ignores them.
You can use the new free tool SandBox to manage the new ACL permissions in Leo.
    http://www.mikey-san.net/sandbox/
The only ACL entry Leo assigns to user folders by default is "everyone deny delete".
If you find other ACL entries that look something like this:
    "group:admin,allow,list,addfile,search,add_subdirectory,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,readsec urity,file_inherit,directoryinherit"
then you have ACL permission problems.
Check folders in your user directories for them and in the application directory.
Most of the time I have found what starts the problems are incorrect permissions assigned to applications, such as some user owning an application that everyone uses. I always set my applications posix permissions as owner:root, group:admin, chmod (read, write, execute) 755 or 775.
This will allow everyone to use the applications without problems. Not logging in as administrator when installing applications that others will be using is generally the culprit. Also the get info box will propagate ACL entries without telling you if you click the "apply to enclosed" button.
Itunes and quicktime directories seem to be the most common place most corrupt ACL permissions appear first.
A decent posix permission GUI application is FileXaminer.

  • Why can't I download PDF files, and why does the "spinning beach ball" keep showing up?

I have a late 2008 iMac, 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, 500 Gig Hardrive, and I'm using OS X 10.6.8.  In addition, there are three external drives - 750 G Maxtor, 1T Maxtor, and 1T LaCie for Time Machine.  There are only 20 Gigs left of space on the internal hard drive.   The two problems I continue to have are that PDF files are not visible when I click on the download link, and I keep seeing the "spinning beach ball" when I'm trying to work with photos in iPhoto '09 or Lightroom 4.1.  Sometimes it seems like the system is waiting for the 750 G external drive to activate before the beach ball disappears.  Can anyone tell me what's going on?

There are only 20 Gigs left of space on the internal hard drive.
That'll slow you down a bit.
See if disconnecting the LaCie helps.
See how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • DVD studio pro is extremely slow, every action brings the spinning beach ball of death

FCP and motion both work fine. Its only DVD studio pro that is an issue. I try to find the preference folder to see if I could trash the preferences but not luck any suggestions?

I see this a lot if I am working in a menu with quite a few buttons and I want to move or amend something. The issue is usually that the 'auto assign button navigation' option is selected in the 'settings' drop down box. This forces DVDSP to re-evaluate everything on the layout each time you do anything, and it takes a while to sort through the items in the menu.
The answer is to uncheck this option, and things speed up dramatically. You do need to remember to check the 'auto assign now' option when done, mind you!
Of course, if you are not in a menu and adding things like a new track is causing a lot of beach balling, then I would think something else is wrong with your set up.

  • VMWare Fusion - Beach Ball City

I am an experienced VMWare user and am having the hardest time with Windows 7 running in VMWare fusion. My physical device runs more than fine, has more than enough memory and should by rights, run a Windows 7 VM with ease. I am seeing nothing but beach ball and having extremely slow responses no matter what I do. I initially migrated a Windows 7 VM that was hosted on a Win7 Dell Laptop under VMWare Workstation 7. Under that platform, the VM ran very well, almost to the point that I had confusion as to which instance was the VM. After migration, I did a remove/reinstall of VMWare tools, tried using more/less memory (originally configured with 2g of memory) Did everything I could to optimize performance. The Virtual Drive was only 40g. I even tried building a Win7 VM from scratch on VMware fusion, but still get the same results.
I know plenty about VMWare on Windows, but not Mac. I have been a Mac user for a very long time and am a career System Designer for a very large Aerospace company in the US. I have seen it all and typically can figure things out, but this one is just annoying me to no end. I want to have them both on one device and have each perform like they should with today's hardware. I know I can do the Hackintosh thing, but that isn't legit and while a Win7 image can be loaded on just about anything, the Mac OS X disk isn't that forgiving.
I just want to know some pointers, because I have run a Win7 x64 VM on my Dell, that has a single Dual-core proc and 4g of memory without performance problems but try to run the same VM on my Macbook (more proc and twice the RAM) and it just hangs. Something has to be set wrong somewhere and I just don't know VMware Fusion well enough to tell.

VMware Fusion Community wasn't any help?

    http://blogs.vmware.com/teamfusion/2009/01/windows-7-on-a-mac-with-vmware-fusion -some-quick-tips.html
Are you using v. 3? maybe try Parallels 6 and see the difference?
What are you running in Windows?
Did you install Windows on its own partition running native, and then enable and activate in Fusion? how does it run natively on MBP? and what are the specs of MBP?
Oh, and as to beach ball issue, run disk repair from another hard drive or your OS X DVD; or invest in 3rd party. It actually could be an issue with HFS file system and directory, so rule that out.
If it happens only with or in VM, well I assume your clean install of Windows, and you would CHKDSK if that was an issue.

  • Frequent spinning beach ball

    Hello community,
I've had my iBook for almost two years now. Some months into owning it, a couple of days after update 10.4.3 came out, I started to see the spinning beach ball. Usually it would happen at random times, but certain activities guaranteed it (going over an icon in the dock w/ magnifying effect on, opening system preferences, and when checking for available software updates).
Well, I got sick of it after about a year, so I did a clean reformat a few weeks ago. At first, wow! super fast, just like the first months of ownership. Well, the spinning ball has returned now, about 2-3 weeks after the reformat. It's kind of annoying how Apple is running those ads on TV where the Mac is confused that the PC keeps on getting stuck, because I have 2 PC's and the 1 Mac, and the PC's never get stuck, as opposed to the Mac.
As before, it sometimes happens at random times when I'm just surfing the internet, always happens when I open system preferences, and usually when I open a .pdf file. This time, however, the dock's magnifying effect doesn't bother it. Sometimes I can use the computer for an hour or so before it happens, but sometimes it occurs very quickly. On average, it happens about once every 30 minutes and lasts for about a minute or two. Also, while it is happening, I can hear the HD making a very quiet repetitive click-click-click-clack sound until the ball disappears. All of my software is updated.
I'm inclined to think that it's a software issue since it runs fine after a reformat.
Despite this issue, I still like the computer, but would love to get this solved. Thanks in advance for the help.
HD: 60 GB total, about 45 free.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi,
    Welcome to Apple discussions,
Along with the other good help you received
Did you run disk permissions before & after the attempt to reapply the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo PPC
** See this Updating Faq Mac OS X updating FAQ which should come
in handy for the newly released 10.4.9 just out today.
See this concise article on running disk permissions repair &more.Travis A.'s Regular Maintenance/General Troubleshooting
Do you run any maintenance to clean the Internet clutter you collect whilst
browsing? If not see this freeware tool OnyX and this article, Clearing caches with OnyX
Did you check your HD for the S.M.A.R.T status as Allan recommended?
In System preferences->Energy Saver do you have "put the hard disk to sleep when possible" selected if yes deselect that.
There are many aspects that will make for the spinning curser, look at the Macmaps & subsequent links it provides for more info.
Good luck & keep us posted.

  • Excessive Spinning Beach Ball

I'm sick of seeing the spinning beach ball. At times it just gets silly, every click leads to a 30sc-5min wait, I want to kill my macbook.
The macbook in question is the black version, 2GHz core duo, 1GB RAM, 80G free space on the disk (v10.4.10). I tried re-installing the OS from scratch (Windows-style!) and I've repaired the disk permissions.
As for when the beach ball appears, it's quite random. The silliest example is when I'm watching something in VLC (full screen) and the clip ends, whatever I do doesn't take (spacebar won't pause, esc wont return to normal size, etc) and it usually takes 2-5 min for VLC to restore to normal size and stop playing.
It other examples are when browsing on opera/safari, or when browsing for a file in finder with no other apps open. It's driving me insane, any useful advice?

    Greetings,
Mine has been flawless so far - no, no negative issues at all. It's a work horse, and has not let me down at any time.
    Cheers,
    M.
