Seeing PC connected external HDD on a MacBook

Hi
I am about to buy a MacBook and I currently use a Dell PC. All of my music and movies are stored on a couple of external drives (1 Maxstor 320GB and 1 Lacie 500GB).
If I connect the PC and MacBook together via ethernet and share the drives on the PC - too which they are primarily connected will I be able to see their content on the MacBook.
Basically, how do access PC drives from my MacBook?
Thanks

With Leopard or Tiger it's easy to do. If your getting the latest MacBook it will come with Leopard. Check below for some tips on doing this.

  • I can't see my shared external HDD from my Macbook

I have a Mac Pro on 10.5.8 that has an External HDD connected to it. It mounts and works properly.
I went to 'System Preferences/Sharing/File Sharing' and shared many internal drives as well as the external HDD. Users for the shares are: My local user name, and also everyone with R&R access granted, and in options I tried with AFP and SMB selected.
Now from my Macbook Pro on 10.6.6 I can see my MacPro. When I click on it I can see all the local drives shared on my MacPro, but not the external HDD.
I also tried 'connect to server' with afp://localipaddress/ExternalHDD but I am asked for the user/passw. There I enter the local user/passw for the MacPro where I have the shares and I get "There was an error connecting to the server 192.168.1.8. Check the server name or IP address and then try again"
Can anyone help me with this?
    Thank you!

Me too. I have a Mac mini running 10.6.7 with an external USB drive. I have set it up to share the drive, but in System Preferences, the access column is grayed out for all users. In Finder, if I click on the drive, it shows up with the Shared Folder designation. But the drive does not show up when I connect to the Mac mini from my MacBook (also 10.6.7). Other shared folders do show up.

  • Is it possible that iMac corrupts connected external hdd-s drive via USB?

Is it possible that iMac corrupts connected external hdd-s drive via USB? (two wd cav. green 2tb from different purchase went down in one day, both from the backside usb ports)
First one of my video storage hdd, full of files suddenly got extremely slow, and a few minutes later, it unmounted itself, but with the unmount error, but nobody even touched the cables, electricity etc. When I tried to mount it again, it did not respond, just give a periodical load light and ticking. First I thought it must be hardware failure, but since I bought a brand new drive today and it made the same problem as soon as I tried to format it. I got suspicious. The consol, said about these - i googled all but now solution so far. (WesternFresh is my drive)
Oct 23 17:10:58 xxxx fseventsd[47]: disk logger: failed to open output file /Volumes/WesternFresh/.fseventsd/636573acca1d6550 (No such file or directory). mount point /Volumes/WesternFresh/.fseventsd

    Oct 24 17:23:05 tmdc diskarbitrationd[16]: unable to probe /dev/disk1 (status code 0xFFFFFFFA).
and there was an I/O faliure not but it was on another mac - where i hoped itt will come back to live.
I think - if it is possible - that the OS maybe misunderstand something about these drives, and try to change - maybe permissions - all the time if a usb external connects...? (I am not really into it as you see )
Also about Disk Utility - it does not see any partition on the old hdd, but i shows the name of the product. If I connect the new hdd via the keyboard usb, the disk utility is able to see and format it, but the hdd will be still slow and tikking after it.
Also I tried Disk Warrior (freezd out) and Techtool Pro 6 thanks to some ol'frineds - which also not saw the old hdd, but did nothing useful with the new one.
About cav green: I have 3 of them and no error so far, and got 4 1tb cav green in 2 mybook studio II also without any problem.
Iam a bit scared, and try not to plug in any usb hdd-s now, but I have to continue work, so I need solutions.
I hope if it is not hardware failure, maybe some tricky terminal code will bring back the viability of my old hdd - and I won't have to spend a lot of money to recover data.
    strange.
    if anybody has a clue?
    update 1:
    i found this post also:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15905481#15905481
I also made the mentioned steps - but it is a bit different sice it reproduce itself and I cant use DU.

It turned out that WD is the big bad guy in this game.
According the data rescue company where I asked for an inspection, both of the drives had their reader head loose. And in the one, which was my already-in-use disk its even damaged the platters... xxxxx
So its time to pay bunch of money to recover, and take a walk to wd service to bang on the desk.
Also note - it may be somehow related to intellispeed technology - since macs not really friendly with wd-s built-in solutions.
On the other hand, with WD GP 1Tb there is no problems at all for ages.
    thanks guys, thread is closed

  • My macbook freezes whenever I connect external HDD or USB pen.

My macbook freezes everytime I plug my USB pen or my external HDD, however if I reboot it and keep the USB pen/ext HD plugged it will work just fine.
Can you guys help me because it's really frustrating having to turn the computer off everytime I need to copy sth to my USB pen/Ext HDD.
    Many thanks.

    Hi fol10,
If you are having unusual USB behavior, you may want to start by resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) and PRAM, as outlined in the following articles
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple-support
OS X Mavericks: Reset your computer’s PRAM
You may also want to see if this behavior happens with every USB port on the Mac, or just a specific one.

  • My new Time Capsule 2T 2013 doesn't see my Seagate External HDD

    Hi,
I am new MAC user recently converted from PC. I have a Macbook Air 2013 and the new time capsule 2013 as well.
I did connect my external HDD (i.e. 1.5T Seagate HDD) in the Time Capsule USB port.
I went into the utility Airport Application to make sure "File sharing box is checked".
I went in Finder to look for my HDD and no sign of it...
I read many many discussions looking for the answer on how to make my External HDD (previously used on my PC laptop) appear on my MacBook Air throught my home network, but without success. From Apple website, it seams to be an easy task...!
Finally, I have read stuff about how the HDD is formatted. Could it be the reason?
    I need some help please!
    Thanks in advance.
    FLTower.

Finally, I have read stuff about how the HDD is formatted. Could it be the reason?
    I need some help please!
It surely is at least a major factor.. maybe several are involved.
You cannot see a disk formatted NTFS.. ie standard windows format from TC.
The disk must be plugged into the Mac and open disk utility..
You need to change the partition over to GUID from MBR.. and change the format to Mac OS extended Journaled.. or HFS+
Although FAT32 is also supposed to work.. that will lead to other issues.. don't do it.
If you format a drive with data on it.. your data is gone.. just to make sure you know that.
You can plug the drive into the computer and copy the data to another location.. and then format the drive.. and copy it back.. if you have an air without the Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter this will take aprox 1month to achieve.

  • Can't see files on external hdd

Hi all I am a noob to MAC so here goes.
I am running ML OS 10.8.4 Server. I was MOVING music from my internal hdd to my external hdd and the battery died in the middle of the move.  I am able to see the files that were moved on my windows machine but the folder is grayed out on my mac. It can read that data is in the folder but wont allow me to open it.  The good news is even though I did a move the files are stil on my internal hdd. I could easily delete the folder and re do it again but I am talking over 400gig of music so far and it was taking hours to move.
Why can't I access the folder and its there but I can access it via windows,  Any suggestion.
    Thanks
    QS

Oh boy. Excuse me for my mistake. Yes I am in the wrong place. I have my 250Gig Westernal digital hard drive connected to my macbook pro.
Yeah it's weird. But as I said, Fileziller seems to see it and I have a test site running on one host's server that is fine. When I went FTP the files (they are drupal). Everything comes over except my one folder where all my images are.
So do you want me to post this in the leopard forum?

  • Twin unpowered USB hub for connecting external HDD and iphone

I have a MBA and a powered Kensington 7 port USB hub which works great when I am either at home/in the office.
Is there an unpowered twin port USB hub that would allow me to connect both my WD myv passport 320gb external HDD and 3g iphone to my MBA when i am truly on the move?
    thanks in advance

Because those are both drawing power from the macbook air, it might be questionable, but any should do, but I haven't seen any 2 port hubs, only four port ones, and I tend to like Logiix, as their support is good and their products are good also, and they are fairly low profile.

  • External Hdd problem with macbook pro 13" i5

I bought a extern hdd last week and i have detect that it doesn´t initialize when my early macbook pro 13" i5 come back from sleep or i turn on the mac. I must reconnect the hdd´s usb cable. My question is... Thats it normal?

Very true that if you don't see it in Disk Utility, you also won't see it on the desktop.
It sounds like you have an intermittent contact somewhere. It might be worth trying a different cable and a different port. Also try that cable with some other device.
No idea if the problem is with the drive's port, the Mac's port, or the cable, but you might be able to chase it down by trial and error. It may be something like a cable that is not fully engaged in the port and not making good contact.

  • TG797n v3 dropping connection after connecting External HDD

Hi All, I have a Seagate SRD00F2 external HDD that I'd like to network on the TG797n v3. Problem is, as soon as I connect it the whole modem starts to drop out and reboot itself. The HDD has an external power supply, but not a switch to power it up. After reading some other posts I'm concerned that this hard drive still needs USB power as well which is causing the modem to crash/reboot. Would a powered USB hub be sufficient to connect the two devices, or do I need to change my external hard drive? Product suggestions would be appreciated.

hey , Thats' a 2 TB harddrive, right? Which of the ports on the TG797 do you have it connected to - the back, or the side? I'm a tad confused, because the Seagate has it's own power supply, and you should not need a powered hub as well. I know some people have had issues, because IIRC, this is a USB3 drive. So some steps I suggest - run a test on the Seagate drive by connecting it to a PC and run the Seagate diagnostics (download them from Seagate), just to eliminate the drive as havig an issueTry a different port on the ModemTry a different USB drive as well, as I doubt the modem will like the separate hub, for instance As an aside,  after the modem reboots, does it "see" the Seagate drive, or does the TGN797 continue to misbehave?

  • How do I back up an external HDD AND my macbook to another external HDD using Time Machine?

    Hi,
My little old Macbook is pretty slow and clunky at the moment and I have decided to transfer my iphoto library to an external HDD named 'photos'.
I've check, it's all there - present and correct.
I've removed 'iphoto' from my 'pictures' folder on my macbook to trash.
I've tried to back both macbook and photos HDD to time machine but I'm unable to recover the photos HDD.
I have opened TM preferences, selected options and excluded the 'photos' HDD from backups as I was under the impression that the drive shown in the window is the drive used by TM.
Can somebody help me please. I've tried to recover a photo, just to test the backup but unable to find anything.
    Kind regards
    T

If I understand you correctly you want to back up two drives simultaneously. If that is correct, you will find a guide here: http://pondini.org/TM/32.html

  • Help connecting external HDD to AT300 tablet.

I want to know if and how it would be possible to connect an external HDD to a AT300 tablet.  Both the tablet and the HDD have micro usb ports, but I can not locate a micro to micro cable online.  Am I completly wrong about this even being possible?  Any help would be great.
    Thanks in advance.

For a flash drive, you use a thing callled a USB "OTG" ("On-the-Go" or "host mode") cable. If you search the forum you can find a previous post with some good hints how to find one of these.
Cannot say I've ever tried my AT305 with a hard disk--as opposed to a flash drive. I'd be concerned about current supply capability for some of the larger capsacity ones (many of which draw more than the USB is specified to provide and some hosts have more headroom above the spec than others). I'd also be concerned that some disk formats might not work with Android. I'm sure it's documented somewhere which ones do and which ones don't. But some research would be in order before betting this will work painlessly first time.

  • Migration assistant can't see TM on external HDD

Tonight I got a new iMac. I'm trying to restore via the external HDD from my last TM backup using the Migration Assistant.
My previous iMac was fully updated to the current edition of Lion.
(Side note: after repeated failures of the power supply over the past 18 months, the Apple Store gave me this new machine instead of repairing my 2008 iMac again [for free again]).
Migration Assistant does not see my external HDD though it's visible on the desktop now, and accessible.
How do you force Lion to see this HDD and migrate from it?
I'd like to restore my system to be completely as it was before without a tedious folder-by-folder migration effort.

Tonight I found most of the solution I needed:
-Create a new administrator account on your machine.
    -Run the Migration Assistant.
-It should identify your previous hard drive's name, and that's what you migrate from to your new account.
-If your new account and your old account (the one on your old machine), have the same name, you cannot migrate to an account with the same name. You should get a prompt to change the account name in the three options that are given.
-I gave the account being migrated TO a new name, and in about 30 minutes everything came over.
The remaining problem is that some of my items did not make it and I cannot find those folders in my Time Machine.
Also, iTunes is looking like it needs to be rebuilt for the most part. I have an iTunes Match account. That auto-imported all of my playlists but my movies have to be re-imported into iTunes for it to recognize them again.
Oh yea...my backup of the iTunes library list is nowhere to be found. I think it's in and among those items that are yet to be found.

  • Mavericks not "seeing" files on external hdd

This has to be the single weirdest thing I've ever experienced on any Mac I've owned.
I have an external hdd that contains all my pictures sorted by year, followed by a folder for the raw images extracted from my iPhone using Image Capture. This is done on my iMac and I've been doing it this way for years.
Today, I freed up some much needed space on my iPhone using the above method. When I deleted the images from my Camera Roll on my iPhone, I went into the external hdd and saw that the files I just literally transfered were gone! I checked the trash, other folders and even the desktop and they were gone...simply disapperared. Clicking into a random year showed no subfolders, consequently: no files.
Frantic, I unplugged the external hdd and plugged it into my Macbook Air (not running Mavericks just yet). The files from the aforementioned random year were actually all there, as well as some root folders containing iPhone pictures I backed up a few weeks ago. It even had the photos i transfered off my wife's phone prior to working on my own. But the folder that shows my photos were still not there.
I am currently running a diagnostic software for data recovery. There is no iCloud backup as of last night (most recent was two days ago). Not a photostream person so that's not turned on. I was able to get many of the photos from the Google Plus iPhone app.
My question is: what gives? How does Mavericks show an empty folder but my Macbook Air shows files? I just used this external hdd on my iMac the other day and those files were there. There is no hidden files option or anything...no preferences have been changed on the computer. Why is this happening and can I get my "deleted" data back? For the life of me I cannot understand some features in Mavericks...but this one erks me.

Interesting that no files show when plugged into the USB port, drive looks empty with the exception of the space remaining. Folder structures show when plugged into firewire 400. The drive has an external power supply.

  • HT4106 Will this thing support if I connect external HDD's or Flash drives to watch movies or transfer photos?

I'm very interested in purchasing this accesory for my camera but I would like to maximize it's usage. I wanna know if the camera connector (via the usb port) will support if I connect, say, flash drive or external hdd. I want to know if I can watch movies directly from the hdd/flash drive instead of buying an app to stream

Theoretically you can put movies and videos onto an SD card, satisfy the naming requirements - all files in a DCIM folder and with a name of exactly 8 characters. Then you can use the photo app to import that video file onto your iPad, watch it and delete it.
Does require that you have the room to import....so it's not perfect but it does work.
but if you want to watch a lot of movies and video files, the seagate is probably the best way to go since you can keep tons more than what fits on a 4-32 gig card (which start to get pricey after a bit)
